Jonathan Brandis—Is He In For A Bumpy Ride? The Behind-The-Scenes Scoop On His Own Private Waterworld!

Is the quest over? Has Jonathan Brandis' futuristic sub finally run aground? Well, that's the question lots of Hollywood insiders are asking now that seaQuest 2032 (how 'bout that for a title change!?) has sailed into its new season in uncharted waters. Now seen at a different time—Wednesdays at 8:00 PM—the seaQuest is light a few crew members. Roy Scheider, who plays Captain Nathan Bridger, will appear in only a few episodes; Mario Sanchez, Sensor Chief Miguel Ortiz, will not be returning at all, nor will Rosalind Allen as the Doctor. What's more, one of the more seasoned actors has been telling reporters that morale on the seaQuest set is at an all-time low.

S.O.S.?!

Even Jonathan has made a comment or two about the direction of the series when it went from being sci-fi to fantasy, observing, "I think we went a little overboard with some of the shows last year." And to top it off, when the remaining cast—and newcomers Michael Ironside as the new captain, Michael York as a recurring villain and John D'Aquino, who returns after a year off, as Benjamin Krieg— returned to the Orlando, Florida set, they were faced with a shut-down due to Hurricane Erin! Not a very good beginning!

The Positive Side!

Don’t despair! seaQuest still has a lot going for it (Jonathan Brandis, for one!) and Jonathan thinks things will turn around. First of all, your fan mail to Jon and the rest of the cast helped bring back the series for another season. And Jonathan is determined to reward your loyalty. Last season he wrote "The Siamese Dream" episode and he's hoping to not only write but direct an episode this year. "Writing and directing are both really my first loves," he explains.

Jon would like to see his character, Lucas, grow up a bit this year. "I'd like to see him wear a uniform, maybe have a little more com-mand—and get a girl once in a while," he says. On that note, Jon is giving his all to seaQuest and sees everyone else on the set responding in kind. Since there are whispers that this may really be seaQuest's last year, Jon urges: "It would be nice to put in a good season before we go out."

International Trans Day of Visibility

Today we are spotlighting a few of the books from our LGBTQ+ Collection that highlight trans lives and issues. Check out the photo captions to find out what books the images came from. 

International Transgender Day of Visibility was created in 2009 by therapist and transgender activist Rachel Crandall Crocker, partially as counterweight to Trans Day of Remembrance, a day of memoriam for all those lost to transgender violence. Crocker wanted "a day that we can just celebrate being ourselves.” More recently, Crocker spoke about the double-edge sword of visibility for trans folks, and called on allies of trans people to make themselves more visible. So for all the cis people reading this, think hard about how you are going to show up for the trans community today, and every day.

Rick Sanchez x reader

The family was out of the house for an event, which left you and Rick alone for the evening. So now you guys have been sitting on the living room floor playing Mario Kart for the past three hours and Rick hasn’t won a single round.

“Fucking shit!” Rick yells almost slamming the controller on the floor as he loses once again. The amount of superiority you felt finally being better at something than Rick was unreal.

“Maybe if you stopped drinking and driving you could get higher than seventh place.” You laugh as Rick takes intermediate sips out of his flask mid round.

“That’s one hundred percent not the issue, the stupid fucking issue is that you have much more experience at this game, and have a much better understanding of the controls.” Rick states, causing you to laugh.

“Wow the smartest man in the universe can’t comprehend Nintendo controls.” You say still laughing and turn back to the screen, still in first place.

“I can understand the controls just fine I’m not- I’m not fucking stupid babe, I just need to warm up.” He says taking another sip from his flask.

The room goes back to silence, the only noise being the game as you guys stare at the screen intensely, with you still winning.

All of the sudden the controller is ripped out of your hand by one of Ricks long arms, and he’s still hunched over with immense focus, unable to let himself lose even if it means cheating. Typical.

“Rick give you back the fucking remote!” You yell attempting to reach it, but he stands up, still playing the game, and he lifts up the controller just out of your reach, causing you to climb on the couch to try to get the goddamn remote.

Rick just laughs at your frustration, and right as you’re about to grab it he flings it across the room carelessly. Not only does it break but also it hits a picture frame knocking it down and it shatters to pieces and that asshole is still not letting himself lose the stupid game.

“I WIN! HAHA LOSER!!!!” Rick shouts in celebration and you stand there in shock and frustration that he literally broke a controller, and a picture frame just to win a stupid video game.

“You didn’t win asshole, you cheated! Also you broke the controller, and a picture frame. ” You roll your eyes, and he’s still smiling in victory.

“Look! See first place, right here. I told you I wouldn’t lose!” Rick says pointing at the obvious first place spot like he just won a noble prize.

“Also losers clean up.” Rick says giving you a kiss on the cheek before heading to the garage.

Name: Manta

Debut: Super Mario 64

Did you know? Manta was not something invented by Super Mario 64. This is actually a clever reference, a public domain cameo from something else! It's called "animals" and it is one of my favorite works. Check it out sometime!

Manta's first appearance is in Super Mario 64, where it has a Special Ability... and a Reward! You know it has a reward because of the Star called The Manta Ray's Reward, but you know it has a Special Ability because it trails bubble rings behind it! Swimming through a ring will replenish Mario's oxygen, making this manta an ideal Support party member when paired with a mammal on an underwater stage. Unfortunately, MultiVersus removed the Support role, so Manta will probably never be playable in that game. It will never get to provide Rick Sanchez with oxygen underwater. Wubba lubba dagnabbit!

The Manta Ray's reward is a star. It gives Mario a star if he swims through enough rings.

"Hi, it's me! Phantamanta! Can I join your manta post?"

Hi, Phantamanta! I'm sorry, but no. This post is about regular ol' manta rays. You are some kind of shadowghost made of magical electroslime. You have plenty of material all on your own, I promise!

"That's alright, I understand! I'll just be waiting outside until you're free to hang out! Trailing electric slime all over town."

There have been a few different manta rays throughout the Mario series! There's Ray from Super Mario Galaxy. There are the goggle-wearing Jumbo Rays from NSMB Wii, and the big manta from Mario Kart 8 that uses a similar design. But there is one ray appearance that I find most fun of all.

Yeah, it's Mario Kart Tour again! Sorry! Just kidding, I'm not! Look at this. This is the Fire Manta Glider, one of a few variants of the base Manta Glider. With its gaping mouth flanked by cephalic fins, this particular manta model is the most realistic, and as a result, I think the best, because real mantas are one of the animals that we've normalized despite them being absolute freaks. And how can you make it even better?

Lore Implications, that's how! This may seem like just a depiction of a manta ray with a flame pattern, but this is the Mario world. Fire Mario isn't just an outfit swap for Mario, it's a power-up form! I think Fire Manta Glider is confirmation that manta rays, and presumably any other creature, could use power-ups if they wanted to and were in the right situation. We've seen blocks with Tanooki tails. A cartilaginous fish using a Fire Flower is far more normal than THAT!
