Every Country in the Mario Universe (so far)
I wanted to make a "little" compilation of all the different Kingdoms, Lands, and other countries within the Super Mario franchise that have been shown or mentioned, so here is is! This is mainly meant to be an informational post for anyone researching Mario stuff. Only the video game locations will be mentioned, as well as only things canonically within the Mario universe, meaning I will not include crossover material or real life locations, although some of the names of locations may originate from external material, and is only added for clarity. Anyways, here we go!
Countries
In order of introduction:
Metro Kingdom (Donkey Kong) - Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario Bros.) - Subcon (Super Mario Bros. 2), Grass Land, Desert Land, Water Land, Giant Land, Sky Land, Ice Land, Pipe Land, Dark Land (Super Mario Bros. 3) - Sarasaland which contains: Birabuto Kingdom, Muda Kingdom, Easton Kingdom, Chai Kingdom (Super Mario Land) - Mario Land (Super Mario Land 2) - Jewelry Land (Yoshi's Safari) - Dinosaur Land (Super Mario World) - Jungle Kingdom (Donkey Kong Country) - Koopa Kingdom (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) - Lethal Lava Land, Shifting Sand Land, Water Land (painting world), Snowman's Land, Tiny People Country/Giant People Country (Super Mario 64) - Nimbus Land (Super Mario RPG) - Sherbet Land (Mario Kart 64) - Banana Fairy Kingdom (Donkey Kong 64) Pirate Land, Western Land, Space Land, Mystery Land, Horror Land, Bowser Land (Mario Party 2) - Dry Dry Kingdom (Paper Mario) - Cheese Land, Snow Land (Mario Kart: Super Circuit) - Cookie Land (Mario Kart: Double Dash!!) - Beanbean Kingdom (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) - Waffle Kingdom (Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door) -
Banana Kingdom, Orange Kingdom, Watermelon Kingdom, Apple Kingdom, Strawberry Kingdom, Pineapple Kingdom, Lemon Kingdom, Grape Kingdom, Cherry Kingdom, Peach Kingdom, Melon Kingdom, Durian Kingdom, Pear Kingdom, Lychee Kingdom, Chili Pepper Kingdom, Star Fruit Kingdom (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat) - Squirpia, Flora Kingdom, Sammer's Kingdom (Super Paper Mario) Honeyhive Kingdom (Super Mario Galaxy) - Baseball Kingdom (Mario Super Sluggers) - Pi'illo Kingdom (Mario & Luigi: Dream Team) - Sprixie Kingdom (Super Mario 3D World) - Item Castle Land (Mario Party: Island Tour) - Sweet Sweet Kingdom (Mario Kart 8) - Cap Kingdom, Cascade Kingdom, Sand Kingdom, Lake Kingdom, Wooded Kingdom, Cloud Kingdom, Lost Kingdom, Snow Kingdom, Seaside Kingdom, Luncheon Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom, Bowser's Kingdom, Moon Kingdom, Dark Side, Darker Side (Super Mario Odyssey) - Kingdom of Bask (Mario Tennis Aces) - Remote Kingdom, Boost Kingdom (Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit) - Cat Kingdom (Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury) - Flower Kingdom (Super Mario Bros. Wonder) - Concordia (Mario & Luigi: Brothership)
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure that's all of them, but if you think I missed any, drop a message in the submissions box!
Notes
Bowser seems to have at least 4 distinct kingdoms in the games: Dark Land, Koopa Kingdom, Bowser Land and Bowser's Kingdom. I will still count these as separate countries since nothing in-game states they are part of the same domain, despite being ruled by the same individual.
Although there are many "king" characters in the Mario series, many are not shown to have their own kingdoms in-game, so none of those were included, as it is merely speculative.
Some locations listed are depicted as small areas within spin-off games (Mario Kart courses and Mario Party boards), and may not be actual countries in-universe. I listed them anyways because it is still technically possible, and the names of these locations in other languages use the terms "country" and "kingdom" as well.
The "Cat Kingdom" is the Korean name of Lake Lapcat in Bowser's Fury, so that was included as well as "Tiny People Country, Giant People Country" as they are the Chinese name for Tiny Huge Island from Super Mario 64. Additionally, "Water Land" is used as the name of World 3 in Super Mario Bros. 3 as well as the Japanese name of Dire, Dire Docks, and the painting worlds are stated to be separate from the regular world in the Mario series, so I listed both as distinct countries.
The "Jungle Kingdom" was the name given to Donkey Kong's domain in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. While the film is not canon, I included the name as the term for his region, as Donkey Kong is known as "King of the Jungle" in multiple games.
Credit goes to Nintendo and all affiliated parties, and to the Super Mario Wiki for most of this information.

I have this running theory about the next big Nintendo console. I think they are going to expand on the switch model a little bit more with a few peripherals that allow new methods of play.
They’re going to keep docked and handheld mode of course but I think that the technology has progressed enough since the virtual boy that it’s time they try again with VR. I think they’ll make a headset you can pop your switch into. They already started experimenting with this with LABO, which wouldn’t surprise me if that wasn’t a sort of “market test.” Nintendo isn’t going to make a Legend of Zelda or a Mario game as their VR release title, they are the champions of creating safe, comfortable environments when they’re first introducing a new concept (think of the “playground” they gave us to explore moving in three dimensions with super Mario 64), and too much movement in their first VR title is going to make people sick. You know what’s the most still and comfortable game Nintendo has ever made and have for some reason neglected for twenty years?
Nintendogs.
I think they’re going to give us VR, and coddle our scared little brains afraid of change by going “here’s a puppy!” It’s a game where you basically stand perfectly still and interact with puppies, what could be more basic and soothing? Except for one portion, and that’s taking your Nintendogs on a walk. How are they going to manage that you ask? The headset comes with a camera, Nintendo DS style. Augmented Reality. They already started experimenting with that with the Mario Kart Live Home Circuit! We’re all going to walk around out neighborhoods in our big stupid headsets, joy-con leashes in our hand, and it’s going to be Pokémon Go 2.0. There may even be a multiplayer functionality where you can see and interact with other people’s Nintendogs you meet out on walks.
After we’ve all gotten used to this new tech, they’re going to start releasing bigger titles for VR/AR. They’ll start with Pokémon I believe, because again, it’s a MASSIVE title that has declined in popularity over the years and they’ll want to revitalize it by letting you interact with your favorite Pokémon IN THE REAL WORLD?? You can battle other trainers on walks! You can go out and catch Pokémon in your neighborhood! It’s gonna be what what we actually wanted Pokémon Go to be like!
I have no doubt if Nintendo did this that we’d all start foaming at the mouth and bankrupt ourselves trying to get our hands on it. It would pull virtual reality out of this current cultural space where it’s both really fucking advanced and interesting, and also subsequently associated with crypto bros and mark fucking zuckerberg. They’d make VR games your grandma would feel comfortable playing. What else do you think they’d do with this technology?

MARIO KART TOUR REVIEW
I've played most Mario Karts in the series. Wii and DS were childhood classics for me, 8 and 8 Deluxe are some of my most played games on their respective consoles, I played Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, and Super Circuit when they came to NSO, and I played Double Dash and 7 in *very legal ways.* The only Mario Kart games I don't have as much experience with are the arcade games, Live Home Circuit, and the subject of this review: Mario Kart Tour.
This wasn't the first mobile game Nintendo made, but this is by far one of the biggest, with the 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass specifically being made to port a lot of the new courses from this game onto a home console (and to stave off our desire for a new Mario Kart for a while). This is one of the biggest mobile games in recent memory, and I had not played it before this year. I played it a little bit when it came out, but I was straying more and more away from mobile games at the time, since I was fed up with predatory mobile game practices, which Tour does have in spades. We'll get to that. Years later, I wanted to at least give this game another shot because now that I've experienced some tracks from this game in the BCP, I wanted to get the full experience on an actual copy of Tour. And I'm having a pretty good time with it.
Like I said, this is a mobile game, and that comes with a bunch of shitty mobile game archetypes. It's free-to-play, so the way Nintendo makes money off of this game is by stuffing it fit to burst with costumes and karts and characters that you can buy with in-game currency, but you'd not only have to grind for rubies and pipes, you'd also have to be lucky enough that you'll be able to get the things you want from the shop or the pipes, which go off of gacha mechanics. The easiest way to get the things you want in game is to spend real money. There are only a few games in the world that have gotten me to spend more money on in-game purchases, and Tour will not be one of them.
But all this just comes with the territory of being a free mobile game, what else is wrong with this game? For starters, the controls are bad. You can either tilt your phone to control your kart, or pan your finger across the screen. Both of these are functional, but when you're drifting, making hair-pin turns, or using items, this can mess up your movement and flow and force you to take a turn too early or too late. They make up for this by having mandatory auto-acceleration and smart steering, which are options I never feel good using in MK8 because they can force me off of shortcuts I'd normally use without them. This isn't the worst-controlling game in the series (everyone say thank you to Super Mario Kart), but it still doesn't feel that good to play.
In spite of all these issues, I still think that this is one of the good Mario Kart games in the series, and that's down to the track selection. This has the biggest track selection in all of Mario Kart, with 103 different tracks, most of which having Reverse, Trick, and R/T variants of each course. Reverse variants have you playing the track backwards, Trick variants have you play the track with added trick ramps, and R/T combines the two. This is an ingenious way to add so much replay value to the game, because now tracks I've already played so many times in this game or in previous games now have a new coat of paint over them. I can't go into detail about every single track in the game because I don't have 30 years to do so, but what I will say is that I love how this game gives massive glow-ups to most Super Circuit tracks they have. With the exception of Sky Garden, every single GBA track got some incredible enhancements to the layout or general aesthetic, with plenty of them getting new music remixes. The sun still sets in Sunset Wilds; that's something that even the BCP fucked up!
The main selling point of this game, though are the new tracks, some of which are based on real-world cities. They are perfectly fine, most of them looking and playing the exact same way. The other new tracks are much more interesting to talk about, with some of them having really cool aesthetics and layouts. Hell, my favorite track in all of Mario Kart, Squeaky Clean Sprint, was made to premiere in both this game and the BCP. There is one track that never got a BCP release, though, that being Piranha Plant Pipeline. After playing it, I can safely say that I like it and I can't wait for it to be on the next Mario Kart. It's definitely coming to Mario Kart 9, right Nintendo? Right?
I can honestly go on about this game because there's so much to it. I haven't even mentioned how this game is easily one of the best looking mobile games I've seen. I haven't mentioned that, even though the gacha mechanics stop me from unlocking everything I want, the character roster includes new characters that I've wanted in a Mario Kart game forever, like King Bob-Omb, Captain Toad, Pauline, Dixie Kong, and the greatest character in video game history, Chargin' Chuck. I haven't mentioned how the costume selection is so cool and expansive, with my favorites being Meowser, Luigi's Mansion King Boo, Fire Rosalina, and SNES Mario and Donkey Kong Jr., who are both animated with sprites, which is something they did not need to do for what are effectively reskins. I haven't even talked about how massive the item selection is, with some items that haven't been seen since Double Dash. I haven't even mentioned how this game makes some SNES tracks playable, which I previously thought was impossible.
Even though I don't think Tour comes close in quality to other modern Mario Kart titles, it is still a great, fun, addicting game that I can see myself playing plenty of times after I post this review. At the end of the day, the best thing I can say about this game is that it's a Mario Kart game.
6/10, what was Nintendo smoking thinking they could release this game without multiplayer for a solid year?

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit version of the Mario Circuit 1 track from Super Mario Kart, constructed by Nintendo Hong Kong for their official site in 2020.
While this at first appears to be a 3D render, zooming in reveals that this is actually a physical recreation of the track made out of paper and cardboard.

Knockout City Developer Velan Studios May Potentially Suffer Significant Layoffs
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/knockout-city-developer-velan-studios-may-potentially-suffer-significant-layoffs/
Knockout City Developer Velan Studios May Potentially Suffer Significant Layoffs
Tumblr media
Velan Studios, the team behind Knockout City, has announced it is entering a reorganization that will likely result in layoffs.
In a post to X (formerly known as Twitter), the studio’s co-founders Guha and Karthik Bala revealed the team was working on a big project that an outside partner suddenly canceled. As a result, it might not be able to maintain its current team size; 46 out of 121 employees were given notice they may be laid off in the next 60 days.
“This is a rough environment for a lot of indie studios, and like them, we are faced with some very hard choices,” Velan writes in the post. Should the worst come, Velan states it will do its best to support affected staff members. You can read the full post below.
Tumblr media
Velan Studios developed 2020’s Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit , 2021 dodgeball competitive multiplayer game, Knockout City, and 2023’s Hot Wheels Rift Rally. Knockout City, an EA Originals title, is perhaps the studio’s best-known title, which earned a generally positive reception and was supported through multiple seasons. Velan later transformed it into a free-to-play experience after ending its publishing relationship with EA. Unfortunately, the game would shut down roughly a year after this transition and only two years after launch.
These potential job cuts join a string of other disheartening 2024 layoffs, which now total more than 8,000 in just the first two months of the year. EA laid off roughly 670 employees across all departments, resulting in the cancellation of Respawn’s Star Wars FPS game. PlayStation laid off 900 employees across Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and more, closing down London Studio in the process, too. The day before, Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games announced it laid off 90 employees.
At the end of January, we learned Embracer Group had canceled a new Deus Ex game in development at Eidos-Montréal and laid off 97 employees in the process. Also in January, Destroy All Humans remake developer Black Forest Games reportedly laid off 50 employees and Microsoft announced it was laying off 1,900 employees across its Xbox, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax teams, as well. Outriders studio People Can Fly laid off more than 30 employees in January, and League of Legends company Riot Games laid off 530 employees.
Lords of the Fallen Publisher CI Games laid off 10 percent of its staff, Unity will lay off 1,800 people by the end of March, and Twitch laid off 500 employees.
We also learned that Discord had laid off 170 employees, that layoffs happened at PTW, a support studio that’s worked with companies like Blizzard and Capcom, and that SteamWorld Build company, Thunderful Group, let go of roughly 100 people. Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive also reportedly laid off 45 people, too.
