The himbo, malewife, goofball -fication of percy jackson is such a crime by both the fans and riordan. It has made Mr not like percabeth as a couple because in all posts and in later books annabeth is such a girlboss, while Percy's dumb and can't fight his way out of a paperbag without her. All the posts are about how annabeth will be an architect and percy would love to be a trophy husband.

Even the humor in the books went from Percy's sharp wit and snark to 'my pancakes can't drown because I'm a son of poseidon.'

And now this recommendation letter bullshit.

Honestly now I'd wish percy just separated from annabeth (but they remain best friends.) He stays home with his family, becomes a camp counselor, helps young demigods, holds God's accountable and eventually becomes a social activist. (I also dislike him doing something marine biology related. It's clear he hates academics but he always wants to help people. Him helping demigods and mortals is such a wholesome profession for him.)

I fully agree with the first half of this, though I slightly disagree with part of the latter.

The later-series and fanon mischaracterization of Percy is at least a solid 50% ableism minimum, full stop. He's being warped into a very stereotyped ADHD character and the exact reason why he's being characterized as "dumb" is because of ableism. Percy is a very intelligent character! That's exactly why he's so in sync with Annabeth and they're such a strong duo! It's just generally Annabeth is more book/academically smart.

I disagree with where you say he hates academics - because that's one of the common misconceptions about his character. Percy doesn't hate learning or academic subjects! He's not even bad at them! We know explicitly that when he is in an accommodating environment he is interested in learning and gets significantly better grades! Percy only dislikes school because it is generally an environment that systematically he struggles with. It's literally just he has a learning disability (two, actually)! That's it! When his learning disability is accommodated for he does well! It's almost like that's what accommodations are all about! We know this from the first series! It's discussed pretty in-depth! Percy isn't a dumb character and he doesn't hate learning, he's just been let down by school systems so much that he's inherently distrustful of them. If they actually accommodate him though then he does just fine!

And that's exactly what CHB was all about and why New Rome University was supposed to be such a big thing for him! CHB is a learning environment geared for demigods. NRU is a demigod college. Both inherently imply an environment meant to cater to and accommodate students with ADHD and dyslexia! They are both systematically structured to be able to accommodate him! Heck, CHB and CJ even both address in the wider themes of the series a metaphor about how ADHD and dyslexia are commonly seen as childhood disabilities, and how it can be more difficult to find accommodations into adulthood because of that attitude but those disabilities don't just go away - that's why CHB is a summer camp but they talk about how demigods outside of CHB don't often fare well. The metaphor there is those who are not getting help or accommodations are struggling. Because that's how that works! This is a fully intentional metaphor from the first series! CHB is never framed as being perfect for demigods, because one of the entire central conflicts of the series is Percy and Luke going back and forth about this flawed system meant to help and support them but still letting people fall through the cracks. The "claim your kids by 13" thing is a metaphor about how acknowledging a child's disabilities (and possibly getting a diagnosis) earlier/as early as possible means they will have more time to learn and build up resources and support for themselves to be able to use later in life. One of CHB's major flaws is that it can accommodate demigods to a certain point, but it can only do so much before those demigods have to leave (the metaphor being accommodating school systems when those disabled students do not have any other forms of accommodations in their lives.)

And that's why Camp Jupiter was framed as being so revolutionary for Percy because it had an environment acknowledging that this is not just a childhood disability, adults with ADHD/dyslexia exist too and still need and deserve accommodations, AND is a place where those accommodations are available. That's why Camp Jupiter and NRU are treated as such special and important things to Percy, because it's essentially Percy being shown this type of thing can and does exist and it is available to him. It is an option he never thought was possible. Percy never thought he'd be able to go to college because he would not be able to go through school without accommodations, but NRU proves otherwise.

The part that's absolutely stupid is Rick then proceeded to retcon NRU so that apparently it's not a full college and Percy still has to take classes at normal mortal college which DEFEATS THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF NRU EXISTING. Rick has fully retconned that demigods struggle past the ages of 16-18 when they're on their own (see above elaborated metaphors) and in doing so we have fully killed all symbolism in literally all of that. It's so stupid. And by having the plot of the CoTG trilogy entirely be that Percy is not actually allowed access to NRU in the first place because he is a son of Poseidon and has to do extra to even be accepted is stupid!

All that to say, I agree the marine biology feels like a huge cop-out and a disservice to his character by reducing him to just a son of Poseidon. The literal only reason why it's the default option people take for him is because oh, fish thing, fish guy. But I feel like everyone ignores the really obvious answer for what Percy would want to do which is - writing. Both his parents are writers/authors and he clearly admires that about them. Percy likes telling stories! He canonically is already a published author in-universe! That's what the books ARE in-universe! The first series fully exists in their universe and Percy is the author! This is explicit canonical information! Percy canonically has help physically writing it down (accommodations) but he is still the credited author! Percy is a writer! Already! Canonically! Why are we making him a marine biologist he already has a profession that ties into his character significantly more. Like you said, Percy likes helping people. That's what the books in-universe are supposed to be for! It's point blank at the beginning of the series! Book one! The thing everybody quotes all the time! The books exist because it is Percy trying to give advice to other demigods who don't know what's going on yet! It's Percy's writing down his experiences to help new demigods understand and contextualize their experiences so they can understand themselves better and figure out what's going on - WHICH IN ITSELF IS ALSO A METAPHOR ABOUT ADHD/DYSLEXIA! Because the core of the series has and always will be built around ADHD/dyslexia! Percy as a protagonist EXPLICITLY was created so that ADHD/dyslexic kids could see themselves as a hero!

Sorry that all was a very tangential rant but my point being: Absolutely. Percy in newer stuff in the franchise and in fanon is horrifically mischaracterized in ways that are functionally either fully ableist (shoutout TSATS for just outright claiming Percy is intentionally lazy and skips school out of disinterest, which is like the number one ableist attitude towards kids with learning disabilities) or a complete erasure of Percy's disabilities. Also I think he should be a writing major not a marine biologist.

With Percy, we know that he hates going to school and his goals don’t really line up with Annabeth’s, but Annabeth is kind of forcing him to do it with her because he can’t say no to her. Say Rick didn’t make Annabeth Percy’s entire personality, what do you think he would’ve done in the mortal world rather than go to university?

I was checking my drafts cause I am trying to catch up on all the asks in my inbox ( as I said in one of my earlier posts I was in middle of a medical situation so I have at least a month of backlog) and found this draft.

The funny thing is I had already written most of the post in the draft version, and this ask wasn't even being displayed in my inbox, so I was very confused as to when it was from.

But it's such a good prompt and a sort of controversial question in the fandom, so I wanted to post it asap.

Percy doesn't like studies, but he knows the importance of it, so I am sure he will finish his initial college, probably either in the science or arts section. We know at one point he got better grades than Annabeth at one point so he certainly isn't quitting studies and doing way better than what people expect. He also wouldn't like just staying at home and doing nothing (I am looking at certain Percabeth stans here), so he definitely would be doing one job or another.

I don't think he would study marine biology like most believe. After a conversation I had with someone who had taken the course, I am convinced Percy wouldn't like it. It's heavily based on chemistry, and we know how much Percy is affected by sea creatures being mistreated or caged, so having to study marine biology wouldn't really be something he would choose.

2.

An interesting twist would be if he chose to be a writer like his mother.

We all know that Percy writes or at least dictates and narrates the first five books, which are written and narrated entirely from his perspective. Moreover, there are books on Percy just narrating his own sarcastic takes on Greek gods and Greek heroes. What if he did actually catalogue his own adventures in those books as a sort of manual for other demigods on how to deal with certain monsters and gods and such.

Through Percy's thoughts, even as 12 years old, we can certainly say he has advanced vocabulary despite being dyslexic and given how much he admires Sally, why wouldn't he be interested in following her footsteps. Sure, he has trouble reading, but that's not to say he wouldn't love expressing his thoughts through humorous retelling of his own adventures which he can pass as fiction to normal readers but actual experiences in demigod world. Who doesn't want to know the exploits of Percy Jackson?

Plus, it's a good money hack. And don't for a second tell me he wouldn't. Sally petrified Gabe, and then they sold his statute to a museum as a sculpture and earned money off of that. So Sally would definitely encourage it, and Percy would even follow through on it just for shits and giggles and the added benefit of helping demigods and earning money.

[I literally want this to happen just for the Godly reactions. I am all for god slander, especially Zeus slander. Poseidon would be half laughing at the book and half worried cause of the sheer catastrophes his son seems to fall into almost on a daily basis.

Apollo would be having a grand time, and Hermes will be half depressed and half impressed throughout. Overall, it would be hilarious all around, and it might finally make the gods feel a bit more accountable . It's literally the Reading Percy Jackson Series trope, and that's always fun.]

One other option is that Percy will get into environmental preservation, specifically the protection of Rivers and Seas from pollution by actively involving himself and others in its cleanliness and purification. He would also run Beach cleanliness programs.

I think he and Grover would become environmental activists and would definitely get into preserving forest areas and other places where nature spirits dwell frequently. I can see them doing it a lot, long-term wise, too.

4.

I think he would kind of like marine explorations, but that might cause his powers to be somewhat exposed, so he might not do that, but it's a possibility.

That's all I can think of. I would like to hear everyone else's opinions on this.

Thanks so much for your reply!!! Yeah, there’s so much about this that’s baffling, and uncomfortable. I don’t like the idea of Percy studying Marine Biology in college, partly because he’d hate dissecting any sea creature, and partly because he can communicate with sea creatures and I strongly believe that the best people to teach him Marine Biology would be water spirits and the animals themselves! The guy often goes to rescue sea creatures, he probably already knows a lot about their behaviours and biologies. I just don’t think NRU would be the best place to teach him this. I like the idea of writer Percy, social worker Percy or firefighter Percy. When he isn’t helping out at camp with the new campers.

i agree, anything percy would do w a marine biology degree he can already do without it. i could see him maybe taking a class, but a whole degree feels like something he'd get bored of very quickly.

- He never grows facial hair. Yes this is partially because I don't like drawing facial hair but also I feel like Percy would just take one look at the mirror, realise that he looks like a splitting image of his dad and then shave the whole thing off

- Anyway they take a well deserved break!! (And get therapy hopefully) So by the time they get to college they are in a much better place mentally <3

- With the accomodations from NRU for his learning disabilities Percy actually ends up doing really well and gets better grades than Annabeth! I am a believer of "Percy is smart it's just that he wasn't properly accommodated and also lacked interest in certain subjects" and "Annabeth is naturally gifted and never learnt to study because she coasts through school and wings her tests" (they're both just like me fr)

- Percy ends up picking Marine Biology as a major because he's not actually sure what he wants to study (he's never gotten the chance to think about what he wanted for his future because of the great prophecy) and thinks that "hey even if it's cliche it'll be easier for me"

Cuz like I understand the excitement of finally going to a school that accomodates you and having hope that you'll get an actual chance to succeed. But also school is still hard and Percy probably just wants to get through it too sjsjsjdj. So he doesn't think too hard on it and goes with the perceived most obvious and easiest option. (Also an option he's most likely to show interest in)

Okay! Rubs hands. From here I start talking about my marine rehabilitation center Percy hcs :) (this hc is heavily inspired by this post! I really looked at it a few years ago and never stopped thinking about it lmao)

- Something something Percy is canonically the kid who used to sneak out at night to help free sea creatures in fishing nets and is best friends with Grover "lord of the wild" Underwood and Rachel "activist" Dare. That boy is an environmentalist.

- He ends up finding genuine passion in ocean conservation and gets a degree in environmental conservation along with marine biology

- A while after graduating, he sets up a marine rehabilitation/conservation center of sorts

- Annabeth, who probably makes it big as an architect pretty soon (at least in the half-blood community) designed the building, Rachel helps to fund the whole thing. Grover, who goes around doing conservation work and setting up sanctuaries to help preserve the wild helps a ton with setting up too

- The center helps out both mythical and regular sea creatures. It also acts as a demigod safe house (something something Hazel + the Hecate kids help to set up wards to keep monsters out and also to shroud the mythical aspects of the place with the Mist)

- I dunno if the staff will be only consisting of people in the know or if there are mortals too but I feel like even though the wards at the center aren't as strong as those at the camps, the prospect of a safe working environment would be pretty enticing to demigods so a bunch of them end up interning there for a bit

- speaking of safe environment I feel like while Percabeth study in New Rome they wouldn't live there. Instead Annabeth ends up building something similar to it at CHB. But rather than a whole city, it's more of just apartments close to camp with various safe houses all over the country because I feel like they'd end up vibing in the mortal world more. (Much like this post!)

- The center holds educational field trips to encourage more people to care about the oceans. (I've been on a field trip to a marine rehabilitation center before, I think it'd be something like that but with a bigger, more advanced facility)

- I actually like the hc of Percy becoming an educator to help kids like him and also go full circle with the whole "why would anyone want to be a teacher for all time" thing with Chiron in TLT. But rather than become a teacher he ends up being an educator and advocator for environmental conservation. Might be invited to be a guest speaker at schools from time to time.

- Oh also he's still a teacher in that Percy teaches swordfighting and canoeing at camp send tweet

I saw this post by @ikeasharksss (link here) and this was an important thing to touch on. So let’s unpack this.

So with Percy, I see him doing stuff with kids 1000%. Sure, we all know the Marine Bio degree, but isn’t that a bit on the nose? He already knows everything. But the child development degree I have him in my Percabeth fic? That’s something. Percy’s whole thing is loyalty and protecting everyone. And we all know how he is with kids. I feel like Percy would go into Children’s Therapy or like social work (though I’m not sure if he would want to reopen the wounds working direct cases) it fulfill that. He would minor in Marine Bio because a hyperfixation on fish won’t get him far in life if he wants to do stuff in the ocean.

Annabeth would obviously be architecture and that kinda stuff. Literally the “something permanent”. There we go.

Leo also would still be a mechanic. He was a mechanic before he knew he was a demigod.

Jason… this one was kind of a hard one. I feel like he would work for the UN or something. That just seems like something he would do.

Piper, Rachel, and Grover would all be influencers. Not like Addison Rae or the Kardashians. I’m talking Greta Thunberg. Malala. Amanda Gorman. Autumn Peltier. Gen Z activist-influencers doing more than adults ever will. Piper would do more cultural activism (Indigenous + LGBTQ+ things) while Rachel + Grover would do more environmental things. I am a firm believer that Piper + Rachel + Grover would be friends if they spent more time together. They would definitely rule the world if given the chance (and spend rich people’s money)

Will would be more of a med research kinda guy than an actual doctor. He would work for the CDC and Cancer research and all that fun stuff.

Nico would work in the children’s section of the library. Easy. He was and still a nerd since, like, infancy. Children LOVE that stuff. Nico like elementary schoolers more than middle schoolers, I think.

tbh i don't think percy would become a marine scientist or something. I think he would, probably inspired by rachel, join an activist group that focusses on marine life, but he wouldn't actually study it. Why would he subject himself to the torture that is college and reading on a topic he can just ask the animals or some minor sea deity about??

I'm not sure what he'd actually decide to major in though. Honestly I don't think even HE knows what he'd major in. He's been so focussed on "I'm going to die when I turn 16" that he probably hasn't thought for a single second about the type of job he'd want to have. The only real hope for the future we see from him is "getting old with Annabeth" and, more depressingly, "not having to worry for my or my friends life and becoming happy".

Kinda hope we'll get a 'what tf do I do with my life' kind of crisis in the new book now that he actually believes he has a life to live.

This is a great question. Personally, I don't see Percy in a traditional office job for two reasons. First, he has major (justified!) issues with authority. Mr. "The Sea Does Not Like To Be Restrained" would be miserable if he had to deal with asshole or even just mildly dumb supervisors, clients, and coworkers, with no physical outlet or the respect he's gotten used to. Post-canon, I want Percy to move beyond his depressing school experiences and live a happy life. On your list, I like blue food baker or B&B owner (helping out half-bloods here and there) because they're independent, creative jobs. They'd also give Annabeth the opportunity to design a magic bakery or inn with Home Alone style traps for monsters.

Canonically, I don't see Percy liking any academic subject even a tenth as much as he does swordsmanship. Not only is he a prodigal swordsman in Books 1-5, it's one of his only sources of confidence. In Book 1, there's not much difference between boarding school and Camp for him until he takes Luke's class and becomes good at swordsmanship. All of his older mentors like Luke, Daedalus, and Chiron teach him swordsmanship (shoutout to Mr. Blofis who was good with a sword). It would be funny if he ended up taking side jobs at Renaissance Fairs and teaching student actors like Mr. Blofis was, or impersonating a gym or Latin teacher like Chiron. He could probably make a decent amount with Rachel's connections. Swordsmanship instructor/Renaissance Fair actor is a great job for Percy.

Of course, he'd likely spend much of his time in Camp Half-Blood and New Rome teaching half-bloods and being a politician. Percy goes out of his way for half-bloods in trouble like Nico, Ethan, and even Daedalus, despite people more immersed in the immortal world thinking he's unusual, naive, or unlucky for it. But it works out when he gets the wish from Zeus, likely the only successful political half-blood activism in centuries. At the end of the series he's in a good position to be a half-blood rights activist at least part-time. (I have a lot of opinions on how New Rome will react to Greek half-bloods who want to live in New Rome without providing the years of required military service, and Jason's unfulfilled request to soften the interference law enough to let the gods' have dinner with their kids occasionally).

While he's doing all this, Annabeth is having wild adventures intertwined with Rick's other worlds. Obviously she's the CEO of her own international architectural firm, but I hc she also does consults in battle applications for magic engineering in the immortal world. Once in a blue moon she seeks new half-bloods, does environmental activism with Grover, or consults with her successor at the Athena cabin on policy. I have a separate career hc that she and Percy slow down once their kids are born and move to New Rome because it's the only safe half-blood city around with adults in it. She goes mad with the free time and becomes a Senator, but has to quit and do remote work because she stabbed a guy, and also her blood pressure went way up. As the sphinx incident shows, Annabeth is way too proud to compromise for stupidity, and that's like 60% of politics.

Other jobs I could see for Percy: marine rescue and rehab. fake gym teacher/seeker. Every few years, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover volunteer to to get kids to camp or do environmental activism and do a stint as wanted criminals again.

I was wondering about life past the current Riordanverse and I really like the idea of gathering different possible jobs for Percy, for fics and for fun.

So here’s a few:

1. Teacher/Counselor

First of all, what kind of teacher? Is he an elementary teacher? Does he teach AP classes in high school? Which subjects? Public school or private school (let’s not forget, Percy spent a good chunk in his life in private schools as the token poor negro kid and was surrounded by awful arrogant rich kids like Nancy and Matt)? Montessori school?? And most importantly: no, I absolutely do not see it.

Percy’s ofc very compassionate and aware of surroundings, so he’d be on high alert with his students but with the current and former state in schools I don’t think he’s willing to get traumatized each and every single day at school.

2. Marine Biologist

Call me basic but since it’s essentially canon, Imma stick beside him (tbh I can’t remember anything past PJO lol). But marine biology is such an interesting and diverse field?? Like c’mon now!

Yes, it’s a lot more chemistry and math and physics than one might think but the possibilities? And the benefits with his powers? Let Percy get a minor in psychology and study animal behavior by actually interviewing them, IT’S A GENIUS MOVE IF YOU GET THE VISION!

3. Marketing Manager

Hehe. My field of study. Am I biased? Of course I am! Was this part of my fic Oh. It’s Them Again? Yessss, mama!

Again. Such an interesting field with many possibilities! And he’d get more than just a good check in NYC if he switches positions enough! Like… is Percy a digital marketing manager? How much does he hate Google, Meta, Amazon and co.? Is he working in strengthening brand awareness and if so, how? Is he forced to work in newsletter/email marketing? Is he a sales machine and constantly on the road? Or is he a key account manager and simply focuses on a handful of important clients?

Is he, as a disgruntled millennial, forced to work with spoiled gen z influencers he hates and has to figure out the TikTok algorithm like a grandpa on the sofa whilst unhelpful Annabeth is laughing at him (shut up Annabeth, we all know you use IG reels and occasionally YT shorts at best!!)? Does he accidentally go viral and HATES everyone calling him daddy in the comments??

Oh, the possibilities.

4. Firefighter/Paramedic

Hell yes. I saw someone else posting about this ages ago (if you can remember, feel free to @!). But this is so interesting. If you want to somewhat stick to canon and let Percy use his powers, this could be an option.

I see it, helping and saving people that way could be an option. Still, also more on the traumatizing side but I actually think this is more interesting than a teacher. And oh, the possibilities in stories are endless! Saving people and pets from burning houses. Coordinating shifts in the station, being a first responder… oof.

That said…

5. Doctor

Oof, I should really work on The Wedding Dance in the future even tho it’s hella minor plot point…

Hospital doc? Owning his own practice doc? Doing 1 first and 2 next? What type of doctor is he? Simply an internist? A gastroenterologist? Pediatrician (could be traumatizing)? A surgeon to let out his god complex? Okay, let’s note down surgeon for Annabeth… a neurologist? Endless opportunities. Where’s the PJO x Grey’s Anatomy fic we all need??

6. Hotelier

Whilst the service industry is incredibly fucked (pre- as well as post-Pandemic), this is also interesting. Let Percy and Sally own a bed and breakfast. What does it look like? How many rooms are there? How much do they hate booking.com and AirBnB for taking a good chunk of commission?

Where’s the hotel located? In Montauk? In Manhattan? In Greece?? What are the roles? Does Sally do the cooking and house keeping whilst Percy does repairs and is the receptionist/clerk?

Who are the guests?? You decide!

7. Chef/Baker

Ahhh… Chef!Percy my beloved, you will always be welcomed. So. Much. Stuff. To. Think. About. And yes, this will actually be relevant for one of my fics, IFYKY. Head chef, deputy chef, junior chef… did Percy go the Institute of Culinary Education? Did he go to Italy or France for a few years to hone his craft? Or did he purposefully say f Europe, let’s head somewhere else? What is his specialty? How much sleep does he get per week?

Also I’m never letting go of Baker!Percy and Sally who own their sweet cupcake shop and sell all kinds of sugary shit!

8. Stay at Home Dad

My fave trope, don’t get it twisted! While I think Annabeth and Percy realistically have one kid max plus two or three pets, I love the idea of Career and Business Woman!Annabeth and SAHD Percy who’s trying to make her life as easy as possible whilst tending the baby, trying to clothe the toddler and reminding their elementary school aged kid to pack their lunch.

A chaotic, yet amazing and rewarding life (which is still stressful! Just a different kind of stressful!)

Annabeth hated her job.  She really did.

Ok, she knew she shouldn’t complain so much.  Being a lawyer after all, was nowhere near the worst thing she could be doing for money.  Especially in California.  But there was something draining about dragging herself into work everyday, doing a job she wasn’t passionate about.

She’d gone to law school because her father and her step-mother had insisted and had regretted it from the first day.  It wasn’t that she wasn’t good at it, she actually surprisingly good and was slowly making a name for herself, but there were days when she just couldn’t deal with the stupid kids who thought breaking into SeaWorld to swim with the dolphins was a good idea.

Annabeth strode down the hallway of the precinct, her heels clicking loudly against the linoleum floor, nodding to hello to the familiar faces around the place.  Despite being a defence attorney, Annabeth was respected amongst local officers, having built a reputation of a high moral standard.  Everyone around here knew she only took clients that she truly believed were innocent or that no one wanted to see put into jail; kids stealing from service stations to pay for their sick mum’s medical bills, teenagers dragged into the wrong side of the law, people who had never been taught a better way.

So when the officer stationed outside interrogation room 2 gave her a dubious once over, she wasn’t surprised.  “Don’t know why you’re here, Miss Chase.  This one’s guilty as,” he said as he stepped away to unlock the door and let her in.

“We all have to do what we have to do, Officer,” she said carelessly, not betraying how she had fought tooth and nail with her boss against taking this case.

“Ain’t that the truth,” he rumbled back as she stepped inside.

Perseus Jackson was not what she was expecting.  Although she hadn’t known what to expect from a guy named Perseus, from the crime she had been expecting a rich boy in designer clothes who thought he could do whatever he wanted because of Daddy’s money.  But Perseus was the exact opposite of anything she could have ever expected.

His black hair with an aqua undercurrent running through it was styled into a undercut and made his green eyes that much more startling.  His loose singlet - adorned with the proclamation “Save the Dolphins” with an illustration of a dolphin skeleton - exposed muscular biceps and ribs that were marked with ink.  Metal glinted at both his lip, eyebrow and ear lobe and deft fingers played with a silver band on his finger and a leather cord with beads that hung around his neck.  Annabeth was not surprised to find a skateboard sitting by the guy’s feet.

Those bright green eyes, alight with surprising intelligence, burned into her the second she stepped into the room.

“Let me guess,” he said lowly.  “My lawyer?”  His chuckle was a low as his voice and twice as husky.  His smile was that of a child who had been caught doing something wrong and knew it; a troublemaker’s smile that Annabeth had seen a million times in the halls of her high school.

“Yes.  You’re Perseus Jackson, I assume,” Annabeth replied briskly, her tone clearly leaving no room for jokes or games.

“Percy, if you would,” he replied.  “Still haven’t quite forgiven my mother for naming me that.”

“Greek mythology fan, is she?”

Percy quirked an amused eyebrow.  “Wise girl,” he said.  “My last lawyer wouldn’t know Greek from Roman.”

Annabeth jolted at the reminder.  She had allowed herself to relax around her client, let him lull her into a comfortable conversation about Greek and Roman mythology as though he knew somehow that was the perfect way into her heart.  And she had forgotten, if only for a moment, why she was here.

Annabeth smiled tightly.  “Get locked up a lot do you.”

“Yes,” said Percy honestly.  He spread his hands and glanced pointedly at the file in her hands.  “But you already knew that didn’t you?”

Annabeth gave up the pretense, took a seat at the interrogation table and flipped open the worryingly thick file she held.  “For being only 25 years old, your record is quite…” she trailed off when failing to find a word to aptly describe Percy’s record.

“Impressive,” he suggested with a grin.

“Not the word I would use,” she returned easily.

“Quite judgemental aren’t you,” Percy said.  He rocked back on his chair and gave her an appraising look up and down.

“Look,” Annabeth said abandoning the file and leaning forward.  “I didn’t want to take this case but it was either that or get fired.  So here we are and because it’s who I am, I’ll fight my best for you but that doesn’t mean I’m going to like you.  Are we clear?”

Percy swung forward again and the chair slammed back on all fours.  His sudden move put their faces mere inches away from each other.  “Crystal,” he grinned, all teeth.

Annabeth jerked back, ignoring the way his smile sent shivers down her spine and focussed on the job she was here to do.

“Ok so, usually breaking and entering is bumped up to a felony but because they can’t prove intent to do anything more than wander around rather than-”

“Steal a dolphin like I was planning?”

Annabeth stopped short.  “I- what?”

Percy looked up from the ring he had gone back to playing with.  “You’ve read my record.  You should know I was doing more than looking at all the pretty animals.”  By the end of his sentence, Percy’s tone had dissolved into something cynical and mocking.

Annabeth actually hadn’t read Percy’s file, or at least not in the depth she normally would have.  She had given it a cursory look over, enough to see that her client had done a surprisingly limited amount of jail time for the number of crimes he’d committed and make some assumptions, assumptions that apparently couldn’t be further from the truth.  

She glanced unwittingly down at the file, eyes tracing over the list of arrests.  The more she read, the more she understood; nights spent in holding cells for protests against marine animal captivity, weeks here and there for intervening with hunting permits, cases of vandalism, a year in jail when he was 21 for being involved with a group that stole a dolphin from a marine park and setting it free in the ocean, countless occurrences of suspicion for setting other animals free.

“Quite the activist aren’t you?”

Percy spread his hands again but this time didn’t say anything, just let his small smile speak for itself.

Despite herself, Annabeth felt a smile of her own spreading across her face and she pulled the arrest report closer.  “Then let’s see what we can do about getting you out of here.  Can’t have you locked up for fighting the good fight.”

Because she was as good as she was, fifteen minutes after they were called up by the judge they were walking out again, Percy grinning and squinting in the sun while Annabeth shook her head in fond exasperation.  She’d gotten him off on a fine and Percy was practically skipping.

“Man,” he crowed, bouncing down the steps.  “I’ve never gotten off that quick before.  I might just have to call you next time I get arrested.”

Annabeth scoffed.  Percy had pulled out the works inside, including baby seal eyes and an innocent ‘who me?’ voice as he promised the judge it would never happen again that even had Annabeth fooled for a second.  But only a second.

“Hey Annabeth,” Percy said as they neared the bottom of the steps and Annabeth didn’t bother correcting him ‘it’s Miss Chase’ again.  Distantly she noticed the tap, tap, tap of his fingers on his skateboard, the same compulsive beat he’d been tapping against his knee the whole time they’d been in court.  “Can I ask you something?  Why do you hate being a lawyer so much?”

Annabeth jerked, startled.  “How did you-”

Percy shrugged and gave her a lazy grin.  “A big win like that and not so much as a smile?  Besides there’s gotta be something you want to be doing more than helping punks like me stay out of jail.”

Annabeth shook her head, laughing a little.  “I’ve always wanted to be an architect.”  She didn’t know why she was telling him that but she was.

Percy cocked his head.  “So why aren’t you off being an architect then?”

“ That , is a very long story,” she said even though it really wasn’t and abruptly she turned on her heel and headed for her car.  Percy kept pace with her easily and Annabeth cursed his long legs.

“We could discuss it over dinner sometime?” he said hopefully, a stupidly adorable gleam in his eyes.

“I don’t date my clients,” she replied briskly.  And damn, because now that gleam was growing brighter and he was smiling at her again.

“Does that mean what I think it means?”

Annabeth sighed and came to a halt, digging around in her blazer pocket for a business card which she held out of his reach for a second.  “Call me next time you’re going to do something stupid so I have some time to prepare.”

Percy snagged the card from her and tucked it away carefully in his jeans pocket.

“I think we should have dinner.”

Annabeth rolled her eyes and chuckled, already turning to her car again.  “I don’t date clients, Mr Jackson,” she called over her shoulder.  “And you won’t be an exception.”

She could hear the grin in his voice as he called after her, “Oh, don’t you worry Miss Annabeth Chase, I live to be the exception,” and damn her, but she was smiling all over again.

(this is going to have multiple parts because I had so much fun with it) (I couldn’t write a proper one shot because it’d be too long but there’s enough content for one) 

Headcanons: Percabeth as tik tokers

Percy is a tik Tok dancer straight up 

Like he’s really flexible from doing gymnastics as a kid and took up dancing eventually and so that translates to him being really good at picking up tik Tok dances

The video where he goes viral is him doing a dance on his skateboard 

From there his videos skyrocket 

He doesn’t have a set ‘genre’ on tik tok, but the chaotic bisexual have chosen him as his leader and as a chaotic bisexual himself he’s happy with the label 

His first interaction with Annabeth is when she duets one of his skating videos and she’s dictating all of the possible injuries he may have and she makes an offhand comment that “it’d be a shame if he messed up his face”

She kinda goes viral from that 

But the one where she goes viral on her own is when she lists these the elements in the tik tok time frame of one minute and does so with so much ease and is barely out of breath, (Big Dick Energy) 

She’s frequently duetting people and correcting them on their facts and putting people in their place when they’re being any form of phobic to minorities 

She’s everyone’s favourite activist white girl 

She’s also been followed by Hank Green and she made a reaction video right after he did so by screaming into the void

When percy sees the duet she made and hears her comment he duets back “so you think it’d be a shame if I mess up my face?” And he gives the camera this look, kind of raised eyebrows and a smirk, but you can kind of see him blushing because his ears and neck are a bit red 

The comments on both tik toks go crazy as people tell them to collab (obviously straight away there are people shipping them but let’s make this slow burn)

Annabeth never replies to his other duet BUT she does follow him after a couple of weeks 

Which percy makes a tik tok about saying, “I promise I won’t mess up my face.”

(He’s been following her ever since she initially duetted him though of course) 

One day percy posts a video of him actually falling on the skateboard and then shows clips of him going to the ER to deal with a fractured wrist 

That’s the day Annabeth DM’s him “are you okay?”

Percy can’t keep the smile off his face and reassures her that this isn’t the first time he’s hurt himself skateboarding 

After that they kind of chat a bit, and follow each other on their other socials, get to know each other. 

Annabeth learns that Percy is at NYU studying (gonna be cliche here because it’s 11pm and I have 2 braincells) maRiNE biOLOGy

And Percy learns that annabeth is at University of Berkeley in California 

The time difference means that their both constantly missing each other’s texts accidentally (but only just) but both of them are cursed with insomnia (annabeth because she pushes herself so hard at uni and percy because he has nightmares from his abusive childhood) so they’re usually still up to talk

But they end up with this oddly comforting routine that even if it’s 10pm in Cali, Annabeth can see that Percy’s still active and it’s 1am 

They don’t really interact much on tik tok more until Annabeth makes a tik tok talking about some jelly fish or whatever that was annoying her at the beach 

And Percy duets her explaining what type of jelly fish it is and basically giving an encyclopaedic level answer about it because it’s literally his degree (and he loves all things to do with the sea) 

When annabeth sees it (she’ll never admit it but it’s extremely attractive) she has the biggest smile and DMs him about it (because she can’t help but constantly find new things to talk to him about) 

Their little duets and late night convos about anything and everything go on for monthsssss, people have picked up on it in the comments saying that they should do a proper collab or that they should “hurry up and date already” until one day on the last day of annabeth’s classes she makes a vlog about her going preparing for a trip and going to the airport and she ends it with landing in new York and winks at the camera

One day late, but screw it.

200 years ago, on 8 July, 1822, famed Romantic, English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, husband of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, tragically lost his life on a boating accident in the Mediterranean. He was 29 years old.

He attended Eton College and the University of Oxford, the latter of which he was expelled for publishing The Necessity of Atheism.

Famous works include "Ozymandias," "Ode to the West Wing," "To a Skylark," and "Prometheus Unbound."

@anarchist-mariner points out how it is very fitting how around Shelley's 200th death anniversary and considering he was a political activist in his lifetime, the British government is facing yet another crisis, with the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Fitting indeed.

I wonder what Shelley would've thought of this debacle the British have been tormented since Brexit. Judging by what I just read on his Wikipedia page, it is most likely he would have voted against Brexit and support the Labourers and abhor the Tories. I can only imagine the poems he would have written about them.

Honestly this is so much better that we have in canon, ngl. And that's coming from someone that LOVES the marine biologist Percy au! Only because I like the idea of seeing him helping and taking care of sea animals. Maybe working in an aquarium.

But I can totally see him as a writer too, probably anonymous, to make things funnier. Nobody knows it's him except the Gods and the other characters.

And Percy as an activist would be awesome

With Percy, we know that he hates going to school and his goals don’t really line up with Annabeth’s, but Annabeth is kind of forcing him to do it with her because he can’t say no to her. Say Rick didn’t make Annabeth Percy’s entire personality, what do you think he would’ve done in the mortal world rather than go to university?

I was checking my drafts cause I am trying to catch up on all the asks in my inbox ( as I said in one of my earlier posts I was in middle of a medical situation so I have at least a month of backlog) and found this draft.

The funny thing is I had already written most of the post in the draft version, and this ask wasn't even being displayed in my inbox, so I was very confused as to when it was from.

But it's such a good prompt and a sort of controversial question in the fandom, so I wanted to post it asap.

Percy doesn't like studies, but he knows the importance of it, so I am sure he will finish his initial college, probably either in the science or arts section. We know at one point he got better grades than Annabeth at one point so he certainly isn't quitting studies and doing way better than what people expect. He also wouldn't like just staying at home and doing nothing (I am looking at certain Percabeth stans here), so he definitely would be doing one job or another.

I don't think he would study marine biology like most believe. After a conversation I had with someone who had taken the course, I am convinced Percy wouldn't like it. It's heavily based on chemistry, and we know how much Percy is affected by sea creatures being mistreated or caged, so having to study marine biology wouldn't really be something he would choose.

An interesting twist would be if he chose to be a writer like his mother.

We all know that Percy writes or at least dictates and narrates the first five books, which are written and narrated entirely from his perspective. Moreover, there are books on Percy just narrating his own sarcastic takes on Greek gods and Greek heroes. What if he did actually catalogue his own adventures in those books as a sort of manual for other demigods on how to deal with certain monsters and gods and such.

Through Percy's thoughts, even as 12 years old, we can certainly say he has advanced vocabulary despite being dyslexic and given how much he admires Sally, why wouldn't he be interested in following her footsteps. Sure, he has trouble reading, but that's not to say he wouldn't love expressing his thoughts through humorous retelling of his own adventures which he can pass as fiction to normal readers but actual experiences in demigod world. Who doesn't want to know the exploits of Percy Jackson?

Plus, it's a good money hack. And don't for a second tell me he wouldn't. Sally petrified Gabe, and then they sold his statute to a museum as a sculpture and earned money off of that. [I literally want this to happen just for the Godly reactions. I am all for god slander, especially Zeus slander. Poseidon would be half laughing at the book and half worried cause of the sheer catastrophes his son seems to fall into almost on a daily basis.

One other option is that Percy will get into environmental preservation, specifically the protection of Rivers and Seas from pollution by actively involving himself and others in its cleanliness and purification. He would also run Beach cleanliness programs.

I think he and Grover would become environmental activists and would definitely get into preserving forest areas and other places where nature spirits dwell frequently. I can see them doing it a lot, long-term wise, too.

I think he would kind of like marine explorations, but that might cause his powers to be somewhat exposed, so he might not do that, but it's a possibility.
