Marie Henriette, queen of the Belgians, who died suddenly after a long illness, Septebmber 19, at Spa, Belgium, in the palace where she had lived in retirement for the last five years, is said to have been the unhappiest queen in Europe. The pictures usually published of this unfortunate woman give no intimation of the extent to which her many sorrows had actually worn upon her, as they were all taken while she still possessed the health and beauty for which she was formerly noted. The accompanying recent photograph of her is interdicted by King Leopold II, because he does not wish to have it generally known how greatly his queen had suffered from domestic infeelicity. Marie Henriette, born August 23, 1836, was the eldest daughter of Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary, and Marie Dorothea, Princess of Wurtemburg, and the great-granddaughter of the famous Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Her father died when she was ten years old, and the young archduchess was reared in quiet simplicity with her sister, Elizabeth, of whom the Queen-Regent of Spain is the daughter. In 1853 King Leopold I of Belgium accompanied by his young son and heir, Leopold, Duke of Brabant, visited the court of Austria. Duke Leopold fell in love with the young Archduchess Marie Henriette, then but seventeen years old. Their wedding was celebrated with great pomp and magnificence in August of the same year, and for a time the marriage seemed to be a happy one. The Queen's first sorrow was on account of the death of her son, the young Duke of Brabant, in January, 1869, when he was ten years old. This was four years after her husband has succeeded his father as King Leopold II. For many years the King and Queen lived virtually a life of separation. Queen Marie Henriette's unhappy lot brought her into the sympathy of her husband's subjects. Her next affliction was caused by the conduct of her daughter, Princess Louise, who was married to Prince Philip of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It was she who had the scandalous escaped with Lieutenant Keglevitch of the Austrian hussars. Her lover was imprisoned and she was declared insane and confined in a lunatic asylum. Her husband obtained a decree of divorce. The second daughter, the Crown Princess Stephanie, lost her first husband, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, in a shocking tragedy at Mayerling in 1889. In 1900 the Princess Stephanie incurred the displeasure of her father by her marriage with Elmer, Count of Lonyay. King Leopold refused to permit this marriage to be legalized, and the king has been so bitter against his daughter ever since that he even excluded her from the funeral ceremonies of her mother, though the Princess had the sympathy of the people of Belgium, and the Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria had approved of the marriage that King Leopold openly designated as a misalliance. Even years before Queen Marie Henriette had to suffer such humiliation from the misdemeanors of her daughters, and the wild gossip about them which was spread through every city of Europe, the excution in 1867, of Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico, was a terrible blow to her, as she had been one of those kinsfolk of his who had urged him to accept the Mexican throne. Still more of a grief was the fact that the overthrow and execution of the Emperor Maximilian drove insane his Empress, Charlotte, who is the sister of King Leopold II. Undoubtedly the recent summary action of the dissolute young King Alfonso in expelling from the court of Spain his mother, niece of Queen Marie Henriette, in order that he might pursue his origes unchecked by the restraining influence of the Queen-Regent, was a severe shock to the unfortunate Queen of the Belgians. But the half has not yet been told of the sources of the many sorrows of the late Queen. The worst she had to bear was in the character of her husband. In the case of King Leopold II, the dignity of age does not conceal a multitude of follies. At the age of sixty-seven years this king is one of the gayest profligates in Europe, and in his many amours he has apparently lost all sense of shame. After his relations with the Princess de Chimay and Mlle. Cleo de Merode had become notorious, he thought nothing of bringing to the palace these women, who are only his best-known favorites, and presenting them to the late queen. He used to insist upon the reception of the Princess de Chimay even after the scandal became so flagrant that when she appeared at a royal party she was avoided as if she were a leper. When the the Belgian authorities forced Mlle. De Merode to leave Brussels, King Leopold followed her to Paris. Clericals and socialists in the Belgian chamber denounced him openly for his immorality. In the low resorts of London and Paris he is well known. The way he is now protecting the great gambling institutes that have sprung up in his domain seems to indicate an ambition to make Ostend superior to Monte Carlo as a gamblers' paradise. When his conduct became intolerable the late Queen Marie broke out in righteous wrath and indignation and made preparations to leave for her home in Austira; but she was held to her servitude by the pressure brought to bear by all the sovereigns of Europe. The publicity of Leopold's intrigues with Emiliene d'Alencon and Mlle de Merode, both of whom he brought from Paris and established in sumptuous quarters at Brussels, was the probably the main cause of the queen's attempt at suicide. King Leopold II has won a great deal of praise by possessing himself of the Congo Free State. In this enterprise he squandered the whole fortune of his demented sister, the ex-Empress Charlotte. Although, what with illness and domestic troubles, Queen Marie Henriette had known few pleasant days in her life, she had always taken great interest in religion and philanthropy. On account of her great piety Pope Leo XIII sent her the golden rose of virtue, a consecrated gift and the highest token of papal esteem for the children of the church. She had also been a patroness of art. She had herself painted some good canvases. She was fond of music and could play skilfully upon the piano and the harp. Driven to the entertainment of herself by her own methods in her retired life in the palace of Spa, she became expert in many things, even sleight-of-hand, which she learned from Hermann the magician. In her young days she was an excellent equestrienne. During her retirement at Spa she kept many fine horses and dogs. The only other surviving child of King Leopold and Queen Marie Henriette is the unmarried Princess Clementine, who was born in 1872. The heir apparent to the Belgian throne is the young Prince Albert, a great favorite of the late Queen, and whose father, Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, brother of King Leopold II, has renounced his right to the throne in favor of his son.

Archduchess Elisabeth Franziska of Austria (1831-1903). 1890s.
She was born in Ofen (Buda), Hungary, the daughter of Palatine Joseph of Hungary (1776–1847) and his third wife Princess Maria Dorothea of Württemberg.
In 1847 she married Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria-Este, Prince of Modena (1821-1849), who died shortly after the birth of their daughter Maria Theresia, who later became the last Bavarian queen. Her husband also came from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He was a great-grandson of Empress Maria Theresa via Ferdinand Karl von Österreich-Este (1754-1806).
In 1854 Elisabeth entered into a second marriage with her first cousin Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Austria (1818–1874). The marriage arose under pressure from Archduchess Sophie. The latter noticed that the young emperor Franz Joseph had an eye on Elisabeth. Due to the attempted assassination attempt on her son, the archduchess did not want the Hungarian daughter-in-law and the constant unrest in parts of Hungary. Elisabeth and Karl Ferdinand's marriage was a happy one. Six children emerged from it, four of which survived infancy.
Widowed again in 1874 at the age of 43, Elisabeth received zealous support from her brother-in-law Albrecht when raising her children. This appointed her son Friedrich as the main heir. Elisabeth was the patron of several social institutions. She was very fond of music. Johannes Brahms was invited around 1882 to play rehearsals of his piano quintet in their palace.
She was a maternal grandmother of King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
Through her mother, she was a first cousin of Marie, Queen of Hanover, King William II of Württemberg, Princess Leopoldine of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna of Russia.
Elisabeth's youngest sister was Marie Henriette, Queen consort of the Belgians.
"Do you like her? Me neither". In this unpromising way, King Alfonso XII addressed his trusted man Pepe Osorio after meeting his future wife Archduchess Maria Christina for the first time. And then he blurted out, "You must have noticed that the one who's the bomb is my mother-in-law." They had come to the French town of Arcachon on August 22, 1879 to see in person if his fiancée repelled him or could bear the marriage. Judging by his words, Archduchess Maria Christina did not arouse much enthusiasm in him - she was not his type; Alfonso liked brunettes, round-faced and voluptuos, and Maria Christina was blond and slender - but the young woman seemed pleasant enough to continue with the state wedding project".
