Το Τρίτο Στεφάνι, Παλλάς, 10/2021
(To Trito Stefani in Pallas. The title is translated in something like The Third Garland)
Definitely one of the best performances I've ever seen. By the end, I was crying hard and nevertheless I felt a kind of redemption.
The play is based on the novel of the same name by Kostas Tahtsis. The plot follows the story of two women, Nina and Hecabe, who face many difficulties in their lives, especially family problems. It's that kind of family problems that sound really tragic -like having a son who's a criminal or finding out that your husband is having an affair with your brother- but they are delivered in the most sincere and realistic way without exaggerating or romantisizing. You feel compassion for the two friends, while their misfortunes hurt you, too. (Yes, you need a packet of tissues to watch this play).
It also brings a sense of another era, as the story takes place from 1910s to the end of WWII. We get to see how harmful the social conventions were back then, for example how LGBTQ people were excluded or how marriage was woman's only destination. It makes you think how much our society has evolved and what steps it has yet to make.
One of the most moving moments of the play was when WWII burst out. The play focused on the Greeks' reaction and the way they stood up to the occasion, ready to deal with any enemy. "No matter what, we aren't a bad people!" Nina shouts, while in another point she says to Hecabe: "You're just like Greece; a bit crazy, but kind-hearted".
Coming to the cast, they were all marvellous! Maria Kitsou as Nina was truly excellent portraying both the vulnerable and the powerful side of the character. Maria Kavoyianni as Hecabe gave an outstanding performance making the audience have the biggest compassion for her character. Actors who also stood out were Tassos Lekas as Demetris, Hecabe's son, who managed to deliver a misunderstood bad boy with a sensitive side, Eliza Skolidi as Eleni, Hecabe's daughter, who was hysteric and paranoid in her attempt to emancipate herself, and George Psyhoyios as Antonis, Nina's second husband, who always tried for the best and never believed that the Germans would attack Greece because "they read Homer!".
Konstantinos Markoulakis' direction was amazing revealing a lot his creativity, while the sets (a moving circle with many terraces to show the different rooms of a house or really anything, even a ship when a funnel with smoke was hanging over it!) and the special effects (the gunshots seemed so real that we were informed that they will be in certain scenes beforehand) were echanting. I also loved how well synchronized the actors were both in the physical way they talked or overlapped one another in parallel dialogues and in their movements.
But what makes this play so unique? One of its key- characteristics was that it combined happy and sad moments, which usually succeed one another. And this has to do a lot with the play's main message; life is never happy as we imagine it (for example, wedding and a happy ever after), as evil always lurks and manages to sneak in our lives. Hecabe's life might seem miserable at first sight because of all the bad things that happened to her, but it wasn't really, since Hecabe was a fighter and not willing to give up. Hecabe loved the whirlpool of life. And happiness is nothing more than loving life's whirlpool.
*In case you wonder why it's called The Third Garland, it's because Nina marries Hecabe's second son in the end and he's her third housband. He's also her third garland, since in greek orthodox weddings the groomsman and the maid of honor exchange garlands to the married couple.

‘Maestro in Blue’: The First Greek Series Now Streaming on Netflix
“Maestro in Blue”, the acclaimed Greek television series, is now streaming on Netflix. It is the first Greek series to be picked up by the streaming service, and was created for Mega TV by Christoforos Papakaliatis, who also stars in the series.
It is the first-ever exclusive worldwide distribution deal for a Greek scripted television series on the streaming platform Netflix and will launch worldwide on Friday, March 17th, 2023.
Papakaliatis has recently stated: ”I hold Maestro very close to my heart and I feel deeply honored and happy that this story will travel around the world through Netflix. I’m looking forward to this journey.”
“Maestro in Blue” is produced by MEGA TV, created by Christoforos Papakaliatis, and stars: Christoforos Papakaliatis, Haris Alexiou, Maria Kavoyianni, Fanis Mouratidis, Marisa Triantafyllidou, Giannis Tsortekis, Antinoos Albanis, Stefania Goulioti, Klelia Andriolatou, Orestis Halkias and Giorgos Benos.
The television series is set in Greece on the island of Paxos. The island actually has an interesting history, which includes naval battles, pirates, and a succession of foreign rulers. Even though it is smaller than, and not as well-known as, Corfu and Lefkada, which are also in the Ionian Sea, Paxos is very beautiful.
