when shadow says to nine that "it was all about power", he says it like he's familiar with that motivation, like it was once shadow's goal as well, that he too had been reprimanded with the same accusation. and we know in the games that shadow has sought power! whether it be a "jewel containing the ultimate power", or destroying the earth, or black doom weaponizing his grief, confusion, and rage for conquest.

shadow's insistence on nine's villainy and his eagerness to be the one responsible for nine's defeat - all directed at a character he barely knows - switches from somewhat disproportionate to entirely justified when you realize shadow does in fact know nine, nearly as well as he knows himself. because nine IS shadow - a shadow without support, a shadow alone and discarded by everyone, a shadow whose maria came back only to dash his own hopes and dreams apart.

Ok! Castlevania posting again! This time it’s about Mizrak.

So in a post from earlier I talked about how the Abbot had already resigned himself to Hell and that this sort of thing is exactly what the devil wants, and I used that to discuss the possibility of an Abbot redemption arc. 5 episodes and one Abbot-frying later, that ain’t possible anymore. But you know who that is possible with? Mizrak.

Mizrak was already dealing with a conflict of faith with his romance with Olrox since season 1. How could he, a proper God-fearing man be in love with such an unholy creature (and also being gay about it? If the Pope knew about this he’d launch another crusade)? That wasn’t a hugely terrible deal though. To sin is to be human, and his weakness with Olrox did not define him. He was still a very devout man who believed in doing good and following God to the very end.

Then, at the end of the season, he saw the very end. He sat at death’s doorstep and was greeted not by God or an angel, but by what seemed to be the Devil. Now his faith is shaken. Now he believes himself damned for eternity. Now he believes himself to be evil, and that might make him give up on being good, since he’s damned anyway. That’ll be a very interesting thing to see.

Now, I should be clear that I don’t think he was damned to begin with. What Mizrak thought was the Devil was most likely there for Olrox. Clearly the two are familiar with each other, since Olrox knows his name, Old Man Coyote, and talks to him like he’s an old friend turned old enemy. Old Man Coyote was there to try to make a deal with Olrox for Mizrak’s life. Of course, Olrox rejected it, but I think Coyote had a plan B for that meeting which is going swimmingly.

I think Coyote’s plan was to get Olrox to turn Mizrak. He’s turned both of them in a direction that could very easily lead to incredible evil, which is presumably his M.O. assuming that Coyote and the Devil really are the same guy as the show suggests.

By getting Olrox to turn Mizrak and getting Mizrak to think Hell is waiting for him on the other side, Mizrak is being consumed by thoughts of how God hates him. He thinks he was an unforgivable sinner as just a man, but now even his own body has become unholy, a monument against God. Now that both his actions and his very existence seem to be evil, he must think that all is lost for him. I think this is solidly represented at the end, where he no longer has any reservations about his relationship with Olrox, which was a big point of internal conflict up until now. Now he’s got a “fuck it might as well” attitude about it. Why deny himself this sin if his very existence is sinful now? I think this could lead to him becoming a lot more lax with his morals. Coyote targeted Mizrak’s greatest weakness: his faith. Now that cracks are showing, they are going to start spreading fast.

Coyote also targeted Olrox’s greatest weakness, although he was more overt about it from the beginning. Olrox’s main weakness is Mizrak. He loves him so much. He’d kill for Mizrak. He’d die for Mizrak. He’d do anything for Mizrak. He loves him so much he turned him into a vampire because he couldn’t bear being left behind. And now that Mizrak is looking at a downward path, it’s a matter of time before Olrox follows him there. It’s not like Mizrak hasn’t done his fair share of evil anyway. The show opens with him forcing a little boy to watch his mother die, but he seems a lighter shade of morally grey these days. But with Mizrak pulling him down he can get a lot worse.

My question is how long Olrox could resist that. How long can he keep Mizrak from plunging into becoming a monster? Olrox isn’t a monster, not much of one at least. He’s one of the most human vampires we’ve seen so far. He’s also seems to want what’s best for Mizrak, so he’d most likely try to pull him out of a downward spiral. We’ll see how that goes.

Imagine if after the end credit scene of Shadow retrieving his inhibitors, he is found by GUN.

He has just dragged himself out of the second crater, snapping his ring on his wrist when he hears the helicopters.

GUN has found him

He briefly contemplates teleporting away, hiding in the surrounding forest or a fight...... but just as quickly he abandons those thoughts.

He is tired. He honestly had not planned for there to be an "after" . He has lost everything, and anything he knows is 50 years out of date.

He almost destroyed the world. GUN is right. He is dangerous, he is a monster. And dangerous things should be locked away and kept under control.

So he submits himself to GUN. He submits himself to testing and stasis when he is not needed. They test many things, his strength, his healing ability, his speed. They run him to exhaustion, they pit him against the weapons they build to see how effective they are, they bleed him dry taking samples.

He grows weaker by the day. They take without giving him time to recover and just put him in stasis. This is penance he thinks. His punishment for his crimes. He almost destroyed the world, and now they will study him to death to better defend it from monsters like him in the future.

It goes on for months, weeks in stasis broken up by short bursts of testing. His quills become brittle, his fur dull and greasy, and his bright red eyes fade to a pale grey. He wonders if one day they will take too much and he will finally fade completely. His soul free to join Maria where ever she is. He starts to hope for that day.

Sonic and everyone else think he is dead until someone (aka rouge the bat) leaks GUN info to the Wachowski's. They are all horrified at what is happening to Shadow and Maddie specifically goes on a warpath to free him into their care. "look at the state of him, you don't need to be a vet to see that whatever you are doing is killing him!"

GUN resists and it takes longer than anyone wants to get him free. It even includes Sonic and their mysterious leaker threatening to go public about some of GUN's less than good past plans/intentions but eventually Shadow is released into their care.

Shadow just thinks he is being given to new researchers, especially when he learns Maddie is a vet. Medical research this time, maybe it will be a break from fighting things and running all the time? Maybe less stasis too since they will need to observe him more? He hates stasis, the fluid stinks and always leaves his skin so itchy and mats his fur. Perhaps these researchers will be a bit better. More like Gerald and the scientists. Plus Sonic and the others he was with are kept here too. Maybe he will be allowed to interact with them, it could be nice to be with others that look like him for once.

It takes time for him realize the testing is over. He at first thinks they are waiting for him to regain his strength before starting but even after he has recovered no testing happens. He just keeps waiting, remaining quiet and compliant. It takes even longer for him to learn that they don't "own him", he is just joining their family. He is free to do as he wishes in ways he has never really known. Free to be "Shadow" without the word "Project" attached. Shadow has no concept of family, he has only ever been owned and he struggles to figure out how it is different. Maria loved and cared for him and he for her but she was a child. Any adult in his life has been an owner more than a parent or true caregiver. Luckily the Wachowski family has plenty of patience and love to spare to help him find out what family is and who he is.

kennderland is a fun crackship bc you know they’d be so messed up like what little art I’ve seen of them is mostly cute and fluffy but their flavours of survival horror protagonist would compliment each other in a not so healthy way if you think about it and I never see this explored in their art esp not art of Leon on his own

Imagine you wake up on a strange new planet, so green, with not a memory of who or what you are. You wake up surrounded by these beings who look nothing like you, and they take you quickly into a metal facility where wires and clips are put on you. Where test after test is run.

They find a power within you. A power they want to channel, to harvest. You make them their power.

But none of them look at you kindly. There is weariness in their eyes. A hesitation in every touch. You are alone. You do not know what you are. Who you are. You have no family. You have no friends.

Then she appears like starlight during a cloudy night. A girl, blond and blue with roller skates. She touches the canister in which you have been placed, and you scowl at her before she scowl at you because everyone scowls at you. Why bother with a smile.

But she mocks you instead with so much humor in her eyes.

It goes all so fast after that. Too fast. You forever look back, wanting, longing. It isn't fair.

She looked at you kindly. She called you her friend. Through her, her grandfather came to like you too.

You would pull her on her skates down the halls and listen to her laugh. You would listen to and sing songs with her. You used to watch movies with her. Shared a pillow fort with her. You once even snuck out to see that green world you landed on again, to stare at the moon and the stars you came from with her. She talked about stars and light lingering on. You looked at her and saw one. Saw your star. Your sun. Your light.

You were happy.

It didn't last. Of course it didn't last. What did you expect? What else did you deserve?

They came for you. For your power. Her grandfather pulled both of you along, running, alarms blaring. She looked so scared.

A gun aimed.

"They're children!"

A gun shoved, a bullet redirected.

An explosion.

You remember it, even now, like it just happened. You relive it every time you close your eyes.

She lies too still on the ground, surrounded by rubble. Broken and burned. You hesitate to touch her, to confirm that this is real. You look up to meet her grandfather's teary eyes. She's gone. Your star is dead.

Your name makes sense now. It suits you well. For you may not have been the one to pull the trigger, but it still was your power that caused the explosion. It was your power that lured them in, your power that killed your star and now leaves the world in shadowed in grief.

You're nothing but a shadow. The darkness in the night. The monster under the bed. Your power killed her, which means you killed her, however indirectly.

She said you aren't a monster and you proved her wrong.

You didn't even fight as they ripped you away from her still warm body. You didn't do anything. You couldn't do anything. You just stared at your hands as they took you away and put you to sleep.

For fifty years you relive it. Over and over again. They made a hell just for you.

They took her from you. Your power, harvested and explosively unleashed, killed her.

You are angry. So angry. It consumes you. It festers like an infection, spreading. It fills you down to the marrows of your bones and pumps through you like blood.

You wake up in a world without her. In a world you don't want to exist. In a world you don't want to exist in.

You go to the only place you think of. The old facility. The only place you ever lived in. The place where she died, where your powers snuffed her out.

You find her grandfather there. He speaks of grief. Of anger. He wants revenge, has a plan of how to get it all laid out, and you are the key to its success.

The world that stole her will burn like she did. Your powers will be harnessed and then explosively unleashed. It will kill you, he tells you. It will kill him. A small price to pay.

It's justice that you die by your own powers, by the same powers that stole her away.

You agree. You want revenge. You want it more than anything. And it the end, you'll be with her again. It's perfect. You want this darken world to feel the same pain it has caused you. You want this pain to end. More than anything, you want to see her again. To feel her light on your fur again.

But a family stands in your way. Something red, something yellow, but mostly something blue. How annoying. How infuriating. They have what you lost, and you want to take it from them. It isn't fair.

You see him. Commander Walters. He was there, he was with them the day she died.

Rage. Deep, sickening rage. You strike him down.

Except... he isn't Walters.

Blue. Eyes carrying the same pain you do glare into your soul.

"What did you do?"

You tell him the truth.

"What I had to."

Revenge awaits.

Is this the right thing to do? Is this what she would've wanted?

No. No. They deserve for taking her. This is revenge. This is what you want... right?

You're so angry. Of course it's what you want. It's what you need.

You power the machine. Let it harvest your power.

You're aren't surprised when blue turned yellow, stronger than ever, comes for you. Of course he would want revenge, too. He is the same as you. He understands your pain. The pain you caused him.

He pins you down. You let him. The world will burn regardless, at least now, you will see her sooner. You can be rid of this pain sooner. You can let him get rid of his pain. You owe him this, don't you? This a mercy upon the both of you.

He hesitates. It angers you. You point to your chest.

"Do it! I'm right here!"

The look in his eyes changes. You no longer see your pain and your rage reflected back at you.

He tells you that revenge doesn't fix anything.

Something shaky within you breaks. You fizzle out. Your anger fizzles out. You realize anger had only ever been the secondary emotion. The mask.

You are consumed with grief. Painful, inescapable grief.

You sit with him and look at the world your powers are going to destroy.

It's blue, like she was. Blue, like he is.

He tells you the pain never goes away, but you learn to grow love around it.

The sun, yellow like her hair, warm as her smile, rises.

It clicks.

You remember it, what she told you all those years ago. How the light still lingers even when the star is gone.

She was, is, your star, and through you her light travels forward even now in her absence.

You are the shadow casted by her lingering light. You are her love preserving. Everything she is, everything she was, you decide now with every action. You are her legacy. Her light still shining.

You were, you are, her shadow. You were always meant to follow her, even now.

You let your anger and grief lead you astray. You should have followed her love from the beginning.

She wouldn't want this.

You wish you could tell her that you're sorry, for everything.

You look at the blue, and he offers his hand.

You take it.

It's time to right your wrongs. To follow the path you were always meant to.

You aren't happy. You're still hurt. And you're still angry, still grieving.

But this feels right.

Even as you redirect the bullet of your power aimed at the Earth, there is a strange peace. A feeling of justice. A knowning that you are doing right by her memory. Acting in her honor rather than your grief.

Blue falters, but you persist. You persevere. You push your mistake further away. You can not, you will not, let your pain hurt anyone else anymore. It isn't what she would've wanted. It isn't what you want. Not anymore.

You can hear her laughter even now. Soft and warm like starlight. You can almost hear her telling you to keep going, to just push it a little further.

Maria.

Is she waiting for you?

Your power engulfs you just like it did to her all those years ago.

Maria.

Is she proud of you?

You close your eyes and welcome it.

Maria.

You'll miss her forever, won't you?

But then they kept going to imply that the criticisms of the Sonic movies are all entirely Personal and Ignorable and not like.
