Splatoon Shoe Trivia

I think ppl already know most of this already, but its been a while since these came out n i find it really neat so im bringing it up again

here's the super cute squidmas art of OTH and the Squisters, big fan big fan.

Now here's the thing: all those shoes are real shoes in game, but none of the rest of their gear is. Not in Splatoon 2, or even 3 as far as I can tell, but all the shoes? You can wear those in 2!

Now first things first.

Marie is wearing the Trooper Power Stripes.

These were part of the distrubution gear for springfest, alongside 7 other sets of shoes. Shoes designed by Pearl and Marina!! This is one of Marina's shoes, and it was made for Springfest, and Marie is wearing it in this Winter Promo art!!!!!

All the other shoes are real shoes too, the Black Seahorses, Punk Blacks, and White Laceless Dakroniks, for Callie, Pearl, and Marina respectively.

Now there's already a lot to be said here about the fact that for some reason only Marie is wearing springfest exclusive gear (in the winter art!!!), but that's not even all.

Because OTH and the Squid Sister ALSO wear real gear in the art for the Hero v Villian (smash) fest! And unlike the Squidmas art, as of now, Inkipedia notes which pieces of gear are being worn here! thanks inkipedia mods!!!

The squisters appear to both be wearing generic white tee shirts (cuttlefish ingame gear), but Pearl's wearing the Black Hoodie. Marina's jersey, while having the squidforce logo, doesn't appear to be any real jersey a player can wear.

But the shoes!!!! Marina is now wearing shoes that are very similar to the seasme salt 270's, but slightly different (mainly in them being black where the 270's r white). ((thank you inkipedia i wouldn't have caught that one alone)), and Marie is wearing the Black and Blue Squidkids V!

and Pearl and Callie?

Pearl is wearing White Laceless Dakroniks, which you may recognize from being the shoes Marina is wearing in the Squidmas Art. Callie is now wearing the Punk Blacks, which you may recognize from being the shoes that Pearl is wearing during the Squidmas art!

Hero v Villian predates Springfest, and Squidmas 2019!

it's just such a bunch of neat lil details to me.

I like to think Pearl got shoe reccomendations from Callie after Hero v Villian, or that Marina got a pair of shoes to match Pearl. Marie bought the exclusive springfest shoes and then made sure she wore them the next time she saw Marina. who knows!

couple more headcanons. even though the model is largely referred to as "henry," i do think we see marie first in the start of the game. the whistling man at the start versus who we know is henry have differences in body language, and there's a decent chance that also reflects their kill styles.

both are theatrical in different ways, marie more playful and light-footed, leaning into being creepy and quiet until she strikes. the pose in the beginning is a bit more closed-in on itself, like she wants the victim to think they might just be seeing things at first until she's more obvious. and the head tilt! i fully want to believe marie taunts her victims by acting a little cute first. "what's the matter, you look like you've seen a ghost," so on so forth, as she does with jason.

at the end of the game, henry is heavy, brutish, and almost immediately makes a point to splay himself out. less stealth and a different kind of playful, still aiming to intimidate but making no effort to be creepy or sneaky about it past the objective of trapping his target in a room. the threat is less dangling over someone until it's too late, and more in-your-face and immediate. with how henry handles maurice and murphy, i think he's more adept at showing and using simple brawn.

It depends on what you mean by abuse. If you consider a severely power-differentiated relationship abuse, then the whole thing is abusive, but also every interpersonal relationship in the 17th century is abusive.

I don’t know of any reported instance of James hitting George, nor of overt sexual coercion (though we know very little about their bedroom life, such as it is possible for historians to argue that they never had sex, although this is a minority view now). James was VERY into marrying off his courtiers, including his favorites, and when George married Katherine, while James still expected George to be constantly at his side, he encouraged them to go at it and make babies. Most of James’s favorites seem to have transitioned out of sleeping with him, and he remained very affectionate with them. Also, remember how James called Carr not wanting to sleep with him “a mere unkindness”? He was hurt, and I read those words as being whiny and guilt trip-y, but it’s not like he was demanding constant service. (Also, many historians think George was probably not having sex with James towards the end of James’s reign simply because James was very sick. Yet this is the period of James’s most intensely romantic letters.)

James, we should remember, hated violence (at least between humans) and had trauma over being shouted at. This doesn’t mean he would never perpetuate it. He did have a temper (nothing like Henry VIII levels though). He led armies, personally oversaw torture, sentenced people to brutal death, etc. — although in this period these would be seen as just actions that a moral king should do, protecting his people against criminals and outlaws. James was popularly criticized for being too soft.

There is an oft-repeated story about him trying to strike a teenage Henry Frederick with his cane during a hunt. This would have been considered acceptable discipline for a father to mete on his son, if “justified” by bad behavior. However, Henry Frederick simply rode off and most of the hunting party went with him, signaling that the prince was more popular than the king and James was not considered justified in this case. (Though, I heard this story told once where HENRY FREDERICK is the one who tried to hit JAMES.)

James and George did argue with raised voices, James publically snubbed George during problem periods of their relationship, but I don’t know that these would really be “abuse” rather than conflict. There is the aspect of the power differential, where George has to grovel and apologize to get James to forgive him, because James was the king. However, James very readily gave his forgiveness (and not just to George, he was generally very eager to forgive any of his friends or favorites for anything if they promised him their love).

Robert Carr DID yell at James, and the main thrust of James’s extremely long feelingsdump letter to him was that he felt hurt and betrayed that Carr wanted to “hold him by awe” (fear) “rather than by love”. So James felt Carr was controlling him by threats and angry outbursts, which James resented, saying that he would do anything for Carr for love, but if he felt he was being taken for granted and Carr was bullying him, that that love would swiftly turn to hate.

(Of course, we must remember that James was a divine right king, so we should be suspicious of his characterization of Carr’s behavior. When James is this massively entitled, such that he genuinely thinks it is a religious sin to resist his will, is he correctly perceiving this situation? Is he overreacting to a relatively modest drawing of boundaries by Carr? I’m inclined to think James genuinely felt betrayed and Carr really was yelling at him and scaring him, but we can’t fully trust James’s perspective.)

So, the short answer is, I don’t know of any instance between James and George that is unambiguously abuse, although of course their whole relationship is colored by power and manipulation. But I’m not a historian or biographer or anything. I’m just a James enjoyer, constantly learning new things, so there could have been an instance somewhere, I simply haven’t learned of it yet.

In the Mary & George trailer, there’s an instance of James wiping George’s face with blood, but this is not from violence against humans; this is a ritual of the deer hunt, where the leader of the hunt (James) marks his companions with the fresh blood of the kill. So this is an act of favor and weird homoerotic intimacy rather than violence towards George.

Bloody Marys! Made with apple smoked & pepper cheddar cubes, sweet gherkins, grilled cheese made w/ basil, pepper jack, & pepper flakes, feta stuffed olives, pickled beets, and rimmed with tajín. Very good!

The Bloody Marys themselves were made with this flavored tomato juice, vodka (of course), Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sweet pickle juice, black pepper, old bay, a bit of MSG, and then shaken with lots of ice & left to sit in it to get cold and dilute.

This was for my roommate and his friend, his friend having never had a Bloody Mary before. They both thought it was very delicious and neither of them were very hungry so I got a majority of the toppings. It was so good..

Katori Shingo and Nakai Masahiro reuniting on TV for the first time in six years is making me unreasonably emotional because satasma has always been my favorite SMAP combi, those two are the best at comedy so their interactions are funny but beyond that they have such a unique bond with Nakai leader being the papa of the group and Shingo being the baby. They may be 46 and 50 now but they met when they were only 10 and 14 years old. They have that big brother little brother energy but it's an interesting reversal of their IRL family dynamics where Shingo is the eldest brother and Nakai is the youngest. I've watched nearly every subbed SMAP clip I could find (and many, many unsubbed ones) and satasma have a relationship with each other they really don't have with anyone else, no other combi really compares.

A few things can really tickle the possibility. I think the one most players/viewers hone in on are the explosives? Then again, they could learn to make one rather than have a supplier.

Though the bit near the end of the game where The Whistling Man locks Forrest from entering the basement on his way back to the DJ Booth - it can just be a video gamey thing that's choreographed a lil silly (and i'm all for simplicity as well), but it's fun to think that maybe…Forrest could've been in close proximity to TWO whistling men that night 👀

There's also the ending where Henry shows remorse, Forrest's dialogue implying he's under the impression Henry might not have actually killed anyone yet. I don't know how likely it is that Henry hasn't?? But if Henry can actually be steered into a reluctant accomplice narrative, then maybe someone more willing to do the slicing has been working with Marie all along!

Tbh it's all just fun conjecture, not really something I'd push as close canon, but it can be cool to think about nonetheless
