Something about Barbie I really love is how perfect the casting was (I'll only go over a couple)

Margot Robbie was absolutely impeccable, hit all the right moments, and while I loved the joke where she said she's not pretty enough to be Barbie, with the narrator responding that "casting Margot Robbie might not be the best choice to convey this point" I feel like there's something deeper behind that

It's a long held stereotype in Hollywood that actresses are past their prime once they hit 30, they are no longer starlets and abandoned, with Margot Robbie being 33 she's right at the point that she would be considered too old

Greta Gerwig said her first and most deliberate casting was Ryan Gosling, which seemed to upset a lot of people, saying he was too old, but with both main characters going through existential crisis it makes sense for a man in his 40s, especially since he plays the classic Ken, one of the oldest models

I'm very happy my girlfriend was there to explain some history to me in how there have not been many Asian Ken's out there and would be a fairly recent addition, so using Simu Liu, who is the new Hollywood it boy, as the main opposition to the aging Kens insecurity about Barbie's interest in other Kens was very clever

As a mother America Ferrera has personal experience that she brings to the role that feels so personal, plus with her biggest role as Ugly Betty, the main character of a show about fashion and challenging traditional beauty norms is very fitting

(plus the fact that her movie husband is her real life husband was a nice touch)

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this but it’s something I can’t actively stop thinking about in the Barbie movie.

Barbie is crying about not being good enough. She’s crying and she’s unworthy and invalid and says “she’s not pretty enough.” The narrator then cuts in and says “this doesn’t work as well as it should because it’s Margot Robbie saying it” (I know that’s not the actual line but you know what I’m talking about.)

At first it seemed like a quick laugh. How Margot Robbie is plenty pretty and her saying this seems ridiculous. But this line actively made me mad. It’s what critics would’ve said when reviewing the movie and going after this part. It’s what. It’s what many men probably thought. It’s what society as whole would say. So many people think that if you’re pretty, your problems and insecurities just disappear. Which isn’t the case at all. Society (especially men) would invalidate feelings of her feeling unlovable, unworthy, and ugly because she is very pretty which means everything should just work out for her. She’s pretty, but so is every human on earth. Everyone is beautiful. But we have a hard time seeing that, especially women, because we are constantly torn apart and told we are not enough and that we aren’t pretty enough, even those who fit the beauty standard.

That line is so genius because it’s invalidating her feelings which are valid because every once in a while, even though we know we’re beautiful, the world and anxiety creeps in. Doubts overwhelm us. Her feelings are valid but the world would tell her they’re not because she’s pretty.

It’s something I actively can’t stop thinking about.

girlhood, hold onto it and never let it go

"I'm a 20-something year old teenage girl." A joke to some, but a sentiment I'm sure we all feel. To me, this is a sentence that I feel deeply. Deep within my core. It's not just the words, "20-something year old teenage girl," it's a feeling. A feeling so precious and sacred, I want to bottle it up and never open it, letting dust settle on it. I want to capture it and hold onto it until my knuckles turn white and my hands turn red. I want to look at it and close my eyes tight so I'll never forget it.

It's girlhood.

There is nothing like being a girl. There is something so innocent and freeing about being a girl, about experiencing girlhood. You feel like the world is so big, and that dreams are just a jump, skip and a hop away. You feel like the sun is bright and warm just for you. You feel like rain only pours when you're at your lowest. You say the words, "Best Friends Forever," and you believe it. You cherish it.

That's girlhood.

Girlhood is matching outfits and asking your friend on the phone if they can wear a skirt with you to school. It's silly little crushes and playing M.A.S.H. It’s bows and ruffles and playing with dirt and mud but imagining brownie batter.

That’s girlhood.

Girlhood is friendship. It's love. It's holding hands and friendship bracelets. It's dancing to Beyoncé and crying to Taylor Swift and dreaming about Harry Styles. It's laughing before you even get to the punchline. A laugh so good that you keel over, hold your stomach in pain, and struggle to catch your breath. It's crying and wondering why crying feels so good. It's the quiet reassurance from friends that everything is going to be okay. It's going into the club bathroom and immediately sparking conversation with the drunk girl in the stalls. You bond over that "super cute skirt" and she tells you to "dump that loser." And you dump him because you trust her with life even though you didn't catch her name.

That's girlhood.

I'm not afraid to grow up, and I don't resent my older self. I'm grateful that I am allowed the privilege to age and grow into a woman who has so much more life to live. I can't wait to see what my life has in store, but I'll miss being a girl. There will always be a piece of my heart, a piece of my being that wishes for the beauty of girlhood to stay with her forever. I will always cherish being a girl. I hope to never lose that feeling, that wonder, that love. Because it's more than just a word, it's a feeling.

The thing that gets me about the marketing around the Barbie movie is that the entire thing is such a blatant performance. Margot Robbie has been doing this press tour in recreated or inspired by Barbie outfits. Everyone is in on-brand wardrobe, including the interviewers.

All the interviews are either on the film's set or whatever talk show or news show they're on has changed their own set to be Barbie themed - even the hosts are in on-brand wardrobe.

The color palate of the film is maintained. Everything is constructed. The aesthetics are practically choreographed. There's a group conversation between Great Gerwig and the actors where Michael Cera is also present, whose character is an outsider in the film, and while everyone else wears beige and white (except Margot Robbie who wears another Barbie inspo outfit, link above), he wears dark blue and sits at the edge of the table while all the others are behind it.

These press tour interviews have been formulaically designed to feel candid for decades. Publicity teams put insane amounts of effort in to make the viewer think they're witnessing actors and directors being their unfiltered selves and constructing an image of them as an extension of their character in the project they're promoting. And Barbie said, why pretend this isn't another show we're putting on?

For years the press around films has said, you the audience are the observer in the panopticon and these actors are here for you to observe, project onto, and be entertained by. They've done this so the viewer feels connected and, ultimately, buys into the image they're being sold, very literally, while thinking it's reality. Barbie's press says, instead, actually it's not a panopticon, it's theatre, and you're the audience so have a seat, and if you're entertained, please come back.

It's brilliant. It's different. It's genius. And it's more honest in its contrived and carefully constructed state than any movie promo tour I've seen possibly ever.

The Barbie movie looks AMAZING and I'm down for whatever it is they are planning to release into the world. It's campy. It's kitsch. It's earnest. It's pink. IT'S PERFECT. And the only thing that would make it even more perfect would be a post-credits scene where it's revealed that the whole plot was play-acted by an 8-year old child playing with their dolls.
