the fluff fic fest is back!
i have a lot to atone for given how many thousands of words of angst i wrote last year leading up to a single fluffy scene, so i'm both taking another crack at it and spreading the word!
Tumblr media
dreamwidth community with all the details: fluffityfluffexchange.dreamwidth.org
typical fic exchange requirements of 1000 word minimum fic or original art on unlined paper. they take a broad view of fluff, including angstifluff and smut tropes.
nominations are open now!! (a great part of this exchange is that nominations will continue to be open through sign-ups, but i learned last year it's good to seed the ground early so more people will use your pairings & tags...)
sign-ups: march 26-april 2
assignments due: may 26
works revealed: may 31
creators revealed: june 7
tagset for nominations: here!!
refer to the community for all instructions, but short version is: you can use / and & relationships, and instead of using the canon relationship tags, you add a (fandom or abbreviation) disambiguation at the end of each one -- e.g. fox mulder/dana scully (xf) or margaret houlihan & hawkeye pierce (mash tv).
additional tags: nominate specific or vague tropes you'd like to see! (e.g. "character a thinks something bad happened to character b but actually they were just picking up mcdonalds" or "hurt/comfort fluff")
edit: i am NOT the creator or mod of this event!! check out the dreamwidth for the mod info ☺

cg! bj hunnicutt x fem!regressor x cg!hawkeye pierce
notes: some fem! terms of endearment are used like little girl and princess. besides that, it could be read as any gender.
Tumblr media
all was quiet, which usually meant more casualties you you'd have to fix later on; but for now, you could sit bored in the swamp with bj and hawkeye. the boredom was honestly getting to you. there was only so many hours you could sleep, so many green army meals you could eat before getting sick of it.
so, you stood up from hawkeye's bed and padded off to the tent you shared with major houlihan. there were few instances you ever brought out your makeup box and nail kit — usually only with klinger and margaret — but today was special. no casualties for three days was good and should be celebrated.
“there's our girl, hawk,” bj said as you walked back in. their eyes fall to the box carried under your arm, eyeing you curiously. “whatcha got there, princess?”
“a box, obviously, bubba,” you answered with a small huff, pretending you were annoyed. you sat back on hawkeye’s bed, setting the box in your lap.
“oh, beej, i think we've got someone who's small.” and at your insistence you weren't small, hawkeye laughed. “nuh-uh me all you want, little girl, but i think me and bubba know the truth.”
hawkeye slid next to you on the bed, checking out the contents of your box. curious, bj stood near the head of the bed, looking over your other shoulder. you held up a big, round brush and a gold compact with pink pressed powder.
“makin’ pretty?” you grinned, and couldn't help but giggle when bubba and papa exchanged looks. “please?”
and bj couldn't say no to those puppy dog eyes, but he could deflect it onto hawkeye. he leaned down over your shoulder and directed your attention towards papa. “i think hawkeye would love if you made him pretty.”
you saw papa about to say something, but all he did was smile and nod. “okay okay, if you want to make me pretty, you can.”
you squealed, delighted, and took the martini glass from papa's hand and set it aside. as you dove into your box, hawkeye attempted to reach over you for his drink.
“i was drinking that, pumpkin.”
“not anymore you aren't.” bubba laughed and ruffled your hair. “our princess says you need to sit still and be quiet.”
“eyes close, papa.” you instructed, gently swiping a light, glittery pink over hawkeye’s eyelids.
you leaned back to admire your work, and satisfied, you traded the small brush for the big one from earlier. you dusted blush onto his cheeks, then stopped to search for your mascara.
you held it up for papa to see, then told him how you'd apply it. gently, he took the wand out of your hand. “papa doesn't want you poking his eye out.”
“but,” you started, reaching for the mascara wand just out of your reach. “not done if no ‘scara.”
hawkeye contemplated letting you apply it yourself or just telling you no outright. the little sniffle won him over, and he compromised. “alright, ill put it on. that way bubba won't have to perform emergency surgery on me, okay, pumpkin?”
that was all you needed to hear. as hawkeye got up to apply the mascara, you turn to bubba and held up three tubes of color. one shimmery pink, one light pink, and a dark red.
“which one, bubba?” you asked, confused as to why he was laughing. finally, he pointed to the shimmery lip gloss. “thank you!”
the moment hawkeye sat down, you didn't give him time to process you putting the lip gloss on him. he pressed his lips together which made you laugh, and as the look was done, bubba was holding back a laugh.
“papa all pretty. look, bubba. pretty right?”
“oh, he's so pretty, darling. i'm head over heels for him.” bj’s compliment made you gleam.
hawkeye looked at himself in your blush compact mirror, and while he didn't care for the makeup himself, your papa was overjoyed with how good of a job you did.
“good job, pumpkin,” hawkeye praised, kissing the top of your head affectionately. he reached over you for his glass, leaving a lip gloss stain on the rim of it. “everyone in camp will be swooning over me.”
“except they can't have you.”
“no no, i'm saving myself for marriage remember?”
in the midst of their chattering, you had pulled out a bottle of red nail polish. you smacked it against the palm of your hand, effectively getting their attention.
hawkeye laughed, and before bj could do anything, he said, “bubba's turn. you make his nails look pretty, kiddo.”
bj cleared off charles’s beside table and moved it between his and hawkeye’s cot. you sat his hand down and adjusted it. you started at the pinky and when you got to his middle finger, you huffed.
“bubba, still. movin too much.” you scolded lightly, wiping off some red on his ring finger.
“sorry, kiddo, ill stay still.” bj apologized, spreading his fingers wide.
once you finished with that hand, you tapped it, and he switched them. “don't touch nothin, bubba. mess it up.”
your fussy demands made both your bubba and papa laugh. soon enough, that hand was done, too, and you started putting everything back in your box.
“all done, baby?” bubba asked before moving his hand away. you nodded and stifled a yawn, which didn't go unnoticed. “oh, hawk, we've got a sleepy baby.”
“i think so, beej. did making us look all nice make you tired?” papa cooed, taking the box from you and setting it on the floor.
“nuh-uh. not sleepy.” you insisted, which earned you a look.
hawkeye wrapped his blanket around your shoulders and bj held up your teddy bear, which had you reaching out for it. you held it to your chest, pulling the blanket closer.
“but papa is.”
“and so is bubba.”
“so since we let you make us pretty, will you lay down with us? and wake us up if med evacs arrive?”
it was a trick, you decided, but your eyelids were so heavy that you simply nodded. hawkeye laid down next to you, arms open as an invitation to lay with him. after a moment of thinking, you took the offer and curled into papa's chest. you felt bubba cover the both of you with his blanket and kiss the top of your head, but you were too close to sleeping to respond.

Doing some kiss meme prompts! Got a couple requests on discord but feel free to send more! Will work through them as I have time the next few days!
houlifield + a kiss while laughing for @almostpleasantrebel — I’ve never really written Margaret or Helen before so I hope I have done so to your standards, Moll!! 😘 thanks for the prompt!!
Margaret can’t remember the last time she had this much fun. Probably the last time she’d seen Helen when they graduated from nursing school, if she was being honest. But now — here — almost a decade later, and amidst all the army’s foul ups, they’d managed to do one good thing for Major Margaret Houlihan, and Helen had been dispatched to the 4077th without Margaret even knowing she’d come to Korea in the first place. It was a short term assignment, sure, but God, if it wasn’t the happiest Margaret had been since the night she first met that rat Donald.
Helen had started the night laughing across the table from her at the Officer’s Club, swapping stories and positively *howling* at Margaret’s stories of her time here at the 4077th. And now, here at Rosie’s, they’d gotten closer and closer. Margaret hadn’t realized the way they’d been slowly inching around the table between drinks and dances and stories, but all of a sudden, Helen was pressed up against her, shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh, as if their chairs had gravitated around the table of their own volition. She felt warm at every point of contact, even with their fatigues as a barrier, and when Helen threw her head back to laugh at her own joke, Margaret was suddenly aware of the fact that she hadn’t heard a single word Helen had said. She tried to laugh herself, play along, but she had been so busy watching the way Helen’s bright red lips, smudging and fading at the center where she sipped on her glass, formed the words themselves.
Margaret couldn’t help but wonder if she still wore the Max Factor Ruby Red that had been Helen’s favorite shade all through school ever since they’d shoplifted a tube from the drugstore to share when they were nineteen years old. When it ran out, they never bought two tubes, just kept one going to share. When they went their separate ways after graduation, Margaret had told her to keep it.
“You alright, Margaret?”
“What?” she asked, coming out of her daze to find Helen had stopped laughing, but was looking at her with concern tinged with mild amusement. “Oh! Yes, yes, I’m fine, Helen, just a little lightheaded, I suppose! Do you remember the last time we had some water instead of this awful stuff?” She laughed, holding up her glass of terrible whiskey and trying to wave off Helen’s concern. She delighted in the trill it brought out of her friend.
“Oh!” Helen shrieked with another peal of laughter. “Must have been before graduation day at least!”
There was a slight twinge of worry in Margaret’s chest at the joke, Helen had always… Well, she’d promised Margaret she’d learned her limits and the last thing Margaret wanted to do was ruin their first night together in years nagging Helen like a mother hen — or worse, one of their teachers from nursing school. She grabbed Helen’s hand and pulled her to her feet, never mind that the sudden movement had them both wobbling from the drink.
“Alright!” she crowed, trying to hold them both up despite her own incredibly precarious balance. “Alright, I think it’s time to go to bed! You can sleep in my tent tonight, we’ll find a bed assignment for you in the morning!”
She shot a glare to Captain Pierce calling out from behind her that he’d be happy to assign his own cot in the Swamp to Helen. She wouldn’t even dignify that with a response and she was sure to tell him so, much to the amusement of Pierce and the other doctors with him and, much more importantly to Margaret, to Helen herself.
They barely made it out the doors of the bar before they were stumbling and Margaret had to catch herself on the corrugated tin walls of Rosie’s bar. Helen tumbled after her and as they both knocked into the aluminum siding, more shrieks of laughter came out of each of them. Margaret didn’t know what was wrong with her. Why couldn’t she stop laughing?
Her head lolled to the side, taking in Helen’s rosy face, half in shadow and half illuminated by the dim, flickering sodium lights coming out the windows. What she could see clearly was bright red, with tears of mirth welling up in Helen’s eyes and she could only imagine she looked the same. For once, she was too happy to give a rats ass what impression her behavior might leave with the nurses under her command inside and as the two of them slid down to the ground in a heap, she marveled at the way Helen’s bright smiling face was getting closer and closer.
The next thing she knew, Helen was catching her giggles with her lips and Margaret melted into the contact. She tangled her fingers in Helen’s long brown hair, no care at all to the curls she could imagine her friend setting carefully in rollers the night before. She wanted to feel the roots between her fingertips, wanted to see how it looked mussed from her grip when they pulled apart. But not yet. Helen’s lips were tacky with the remnants of her lipstick — ruby Red Max Factor, just like she’d thought — Margaret would remember that taste on Helen’s lips anywhere, even a decade later.

Mike Farrell Reflects on Captain B.J. Hunnicutt’s Ahead of ‘M*A*S*H’ TV Special
Scott Fishman, TV Insider Dec 21, 2023 Updated Dec 22, 2023 0
Mike Farrell knew he had a lot to live up to when he joined the 4077th Medical Corps and cast of M*A*S*H as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. The well-versed actor already had an impressive career including a stint on Days of Our Lives. However, this was a completely different kind of pressure coming into season 4 of a highly successful series after the exit of Wayne Rogers, who played Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre.
He was up to the challenge with viewers connecting with the devoted family man and what would be a long-time bond with Alan Alda’s Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. Viewers will ever forget the shot during the historic series finale where B.J. yells out that he left a note for Hawkeye. As he flies away in the helicopter, he soon notices that his good friend spelled out the word “Goodbye” with rocks on the ground.
It’s these types of iconic moments and characters that are celebrated during FOX’s upcoming M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television. Executive-produced by John Scheinfeld and Andy Kaplan, this two-special delves into the Emmy-winning run over 11 seasons through the perspective of the cast and visionaries behind the scenes.
Joining Farrell and Alda on the doc is Gary Burghoff (Cpl. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly), and Loretta Swit (Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan) to name a few, as well as series executive producers Gene Reynolds and Burt Metcalfe. Those who have since passed, including show creator Larry Gelbart, Rogers, Larry Linville (Maj. Frank Burns), Harry Morgan (Col. Sherman T. Potter), and McLean Stevenson (Lt. Col. Henry Blake) are spotlighted through archival photos and footage.
Here Farrell opens up about his emotional reaction to the special. The 84-year-old also describes what it’s like to see the beloved sitcom still resonate more than 40 years after it ended.
Michael Farrell
How often do you go back and watch the episodes back?
Mike Farrell: The popularity of the show continues to astonish me and thrill me, frankly. I get constant emails, and mail, calls to keep it fresh in my mind, and its extraordinary impact. I don’t make a point of looking for it on television, but sometimes it’s there. And when it’s there, I can’t stop looking at it and watching those people I love so much and care about. To see and remember who they were and what we did together. It’s something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I’m so thrilled to be a part of it that it’s hard to put into words.
I remember seeing Alan Alda share a photo of you two toasting to the 50th anniversary of the show’s premiere. How is it for you to still have these close connections after all these years?
For us, it’s a family situation. We enjoyed working together and having this kind of bond that continues to this day. We talk about how much we love each other and stay in touch regularly. It has been something that brings an ongoing extraordinary rush of gratitude and appreciation for all of us here…Then you see David Ogden Stiers, Harry Morgan, Larry Linville, and others on the special. There is that sense of longing for somebody who you knew, loved, and enjoyed working with. It’s piercing at the heart when you see that sometimes. For me, I’m overwhelmed with the warmth that comes back from seeing Harry, remembering the relationship we had not only during the show but afterward. Watching Alan and his incredible wit and hijinks. Some of those things stay with me today. When I tell stories, I can’t help but get misty about those memories. It’s an everlasting love affair for me.
It’s fun to think about what would have happened if social media had been around during M*A*S*H’s original run. For example, B.J.’s mustache would be a hot topic of conversation.
People often ask me, “What do you think of the mustache?” I will say my mother hated the mustache. The mustache was a fun thing. Alan called me at the beginning of one season and said, “They think we are too much alike. What do you think about growing a mustache?” I thought it was a great idea. We made a lot out of it, which was fun to do. I wore what started as a red long shirt. Through many washes, it came out pink. I thought it was hilarious to be wearing a pink shirt in the middle of all that. I get many comments from people in the gay community who tell me they loved my pink shirt and ask if that was a signal. I tell them no, but that I’m glad they noticed it.
One of the topics that gets tackled in the special is B.J.’s character and moment of infidelity with a nurse divorcee. After all this time, I even saw a Reddit thread asking if B.J. cheated on his wife Peg.
I remember when I first met with the guys and they were talking about the possibility of Wayne leaving. I told them the one thing I didn’t want to do as an actor was come in and step in the boots of “Trapper.” They understood. They had in mind a fellow who was married, not a womanizer like “Hawkeye” or “Trapper,” who had a child at home. And he is going to be true to his wife and family. You’re talking about modeling fidelity on television, I didn’t mind that at all. We laughed. It stayed that way. One year we did a show where Blythe Danner played the guest star. She and “Hawkeye had been having a love affair in medical school, and she was temporarily assigned to our station. She was married, but the affair popped up again.
There is a scene where “Hawkeye” asks B.J. if he has ever been unfaithful. I said never. He said, “You ever tempted?” I said, “Tempted is a different question.” He said, “So, you have been tempted?” I said, “No, it was a different question.” It was a good gag. Larry Gelbart, who wrote the scene was ont eh stage when we finished that shot. I said, “Larry, that was wonderful, but let me suggest the idea. The fact B.J. is a faithful husband is great by me, but to suggest a man was not tempted goes too far. I don’t think we need to paint in that pristine manner.” He said that was a good thought. A year later Gene remembers that conversation with Larry. He asked, “What do you feel about B.J. falling off the fidelity wagon?” I said, “It depends on how you resolve it.”
How do you feel it came out?
I loved the whole process that they cared enough to hear me out, and decided it was worth dealing with that question. I thought they resolved it in a classy way. B.J. was upset about what he had done. It was brief and a misstep. He was miserable about it. “Hawkeye” gave him hell because he was going to write home and tell Peg. He said, “Don’t do that to her. If you must confess for whatever the transgression, wait until you get home where you can be with her and talk to her. I thought it was great that they were willing to explore the kind of experience people are put through in these circumstances.
It was almost like it didn’t matter how far they went, but didn’t matter. He would feel the same way.
Exactly. But the idea of them spending the night together in a bed, under those circumstances, and didn’t go far sounds a little stretch to me.
When was the moment you felt how big a show M*A*S*H was?
I was in Southeast Asia during one of our breaks. After my second or third year there on the show when I went around, I was astonished at the no matter what part of the world, the show meant something to the.m. This one man said, “Your show constantly underscores for me the meaning of peace and the need for peace in this world.” I came back to set and Alan and I were sitting together during the first day of the season back. I said, “Are you hearing what I’m hearing out there?” He said, “Yeah, we need to be aware of the way the show is affecting people.
We decided on a regular meeting as a cast and talked through the issues of the day. Alan and I both made it a point that this show is having an impact that is beyond just being a popular television show. We need to be seriously committed to making sure we do the best work we can do. Everyone got it and agreed and rededicated ourselves to commit to doing meaningful work because of the audience’s respect and appreciation for the show.
What are your overall thoughts on the FOX special while screening it?
I watched it with tears streaming down my face while laughter burst from my mouth. It was an extraordinary tribute. Not only to the show and people involved but the people involved behind the scenes. I’m glad they included the clip of Gene, Larry, and in particular Burt Metcalfe, the casting genius who brought many of the characters to the show; me included. He was a powerful force in maintaining the integrity of the show. It was deeply touching and I think the audience will love it. It shows the significance and the work of the characters and the way the show was built and what it became. I was thrilled when I saw it.
How do you think the show would do in today’s TV landscape?
I think it would remain a touchstone for people I can’t tell you how many veterans have contacted me. Even children of veterans. They would say. “My dad would never talk about his experience in the war until he saw your show. Then he would say, ‘That’s the way it was.”…That it has stayed relevant and meaningful to people for generations speaks volumes about the show.

Margaret Houlihan Undressing In Front Of You Would Include
Tumblr media
Margaret isn’t a shy woman, but even so, in the beginning stage of your relationship, she’d insist you turn around when she undresses, something you obviously respect.
Once you were more established as a couple, she wouldn’t mind if you sneak a peek at her, even looking over her shoulder in hopes that you were.
Then, she’d really start putting on a show. She’d be playing with her hair and touching up her makeup in the mirror when she knows you’ll be stopping by.
She’d now let you openly watch her, relishing in the way your eyes raked over her and how many times you’d call her beautiful.
When she’s in a mood to, she does like to tease, seeing how long you can hold out before you simply can’t wait to have her naked in your arms for a moment longer.

“It’s just when I read your file and saw you were a doctor I thought…”
“You thought I was a man,” you filled in for the fumbling Colonel. “It’s alright Colonel Potter, you wouldn’t be the first person to have made that assumption, but I’m here to help in any way I can.”
“What’s your specialty?” he asked, flipping through the pages in your file trying to see if there was anything else he’d missed in his first skim through.
“Trauma surgery, sir. I worked as a nurse during the last year of the Second World War and when I got back home I applied to any medical school that would have me.”
“Trauma surgery, must be serendipitous,” he chuckled and you gave him a polite smile.
“Sir,” the Colonel’s clerk opened the door and stepped inside.
“Oh Radar why don’t you-,”
“Bring in Captains Pierce and Hunnicut and Majors Burns and Houlihan to meet the new recruit, already done sir,”
The door opened wider and the four aforementioned officers stepped inside. The two Captains were both men, one tall with a bright smile and blond hair and the other with straight black hair and tinges of grey scattered throughout. Of the Majors, one was a man of average height and light brown hair while the other, you suspected, was the head nurse with her blond hair pinned behind her ears.
“Pierce, Hunnicut, Burns, Houlihan, I’d like you to meet our newest recruit.”
“We don’t normally do meet and greet with the nurses,” the black-haired one smirked. “But it’s a practice I’d love to continue,” he sent a wink at you. “What’s your name, honey?” he took your hand in his to shake but you removed it quickly from his grasp.
“Doctor,” you responded.
“What?” The rest of the company looked confused along with him.
“I am a doctor , Captain. I worked just as hard if not harder for my medical degree and I’d appreciate it if you treated me as such, not like one of your nightly nurse companions.”
“You’re a doctor?” the head nurse asked.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Her specialty is trauma surgery,” Colonel Potter told the team.
“Trauma surgery, thank goodness, we couldn’t have handled another Frank,” the blond Captain sighed while the other Major looked like he was about to explode.
“I take that to be a good thing, Captain?” you asked.
“Very good. And call me B.J.”
You chuckled, remembering a faint memory of a young boy named B.J. you'd seen come through the ER for swallowing the key to his father’s new car.
“Consider it done,” you nodded.
“This is our main team of surgeons in the OR, you’ll be on rotations with them. It’ll be easier if you like them, but if you don’t you still have to work with them regardless.”
“Work with, we have to live with him on top of working with him.” Pierce pointed to Major Burns.
“Colonel! Why don’t you say anything to them?! They’re being insubordinate!”
Colonel Potter sighed and looked over at Major Burns with a hint of contempt.
“Major, I have better things to do than tell Pierce what to do only for him not to listen to me.”
“I’m glad I’ve been universally recognized as a lost cause for the army,” Pierce grinned, using a hand to lean on the Colonel’s desk.
“Oh, this is going into my weekly report for the General. If it’s the last thing I do I will get you two in trouble for everything that you do!”
“That’s a long list Frank, are you sure you can handle it?” B.J. asked.
Before they could go any further the Colonel jumped in.
“Captain, since you’re a female officer we’ll have you sharing quarters with Major Houlihan for now. We’ll send out for another tent and set it up for you as soon as it arrives.”
“Thank you, Colonel, if the rest of you don’t mind I’d like to get settled. Major Houlihan, would you mind showing me the way?”
“Not at all,” she smiled and placed a hand on your back, leading you out of the room.
You grabbed your bags and followed the Major out into the camp and around to her quarters which were close to the OR.
“We’ll get another cot in here for you, but for now you can make yourself at home,” she told you. “I just have to-,” she paused when she saw you pulled out a framed photo from your bag and placed it on one of the empty tables. “Is that your family?” she asked.
You nodded your head.
“My husband and kids,” you passed her the frame.
“They’re adorable, what are their names?”
“My oldest is Grant,” you pointed to the boy. “He’s eight and my daughter Julia is four.”
“How precious. It must be hard being away from them.”
“It is, but they’re in good hands,” you smiled. “You said you had to go somewhere, Major?”
“Oh, yes, just to… chat with a colleague,” she handed you back the frame and headed out of the tent, leaving you to unpack the rest of your things in silence.
“Hey Frank, nice stitching,” Pierce noted as he walked by the OR table on the way to his own patient.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I really don’t think your glove is going to come out this time, you’ve got it in there good,” he teased and you rolled your eyes.
“Captain Pierce, maybe you can focus on your bleeding patient instead of poking fun at Major Burns,” you commented while elbow-deep in your own patient.
“Thank you, Captain. Finally, someone who recognizes good surgical talent and not just flash.”
“I agree Major,” you nodded, “Although I believe you’re probably referring to yourself which I am not. If this is meatball surgery you’re doing meatloaf surgery.”
“Ha! Hawkeye, looks like we’ve got some competition,” B.J. chuckled.
“4-0 silk please nurse,” you looked at who was assisting you. It was still early and you hadn’t had a chance to learn everyone’s names, but you supposed it would come soon enough, after all, it wasn’t like you’d be leaving the war anytime soon.
After a few more gruelling hours in the OR, all the casualties were finally attended to and you could step out to quickly get something for dinner before they cleared out the mess tent, and hopefully, afterwards, you could take a nice shower and wash all of the blood, dirt and sweat off of your body before crashing into bed and not waking up until you absolutely had to.
You remembered what it was like to work during the Second World War, but this felt different. You were a doctor now, you had more responsibility to your patients and to the others working in the outfit with you, and on top of that you were a woman. It wasn’t every day you saw a woman surgeon let alone in the army.
When you stepped inside the mess tent was practically empty aside from one familiar body sitting in the back corner with a cup of coffee and what looked like leftovers from yesterday’s lunch.
You grabbed yourself a tray and served yourself a few things before going to join your fellow surgeon. Even if you were going to eat in silence you could at least do it in the presence of good company.
B.J. sipped his coffee and spun a pen in his hand as he looked at a partially written-on paper in front of him.
“Writing home?” you asked.
“To my wife,” he nodded. “She sent me a letter with this beauty,” he showed you a picture of a small baby girl in a frilly dress with a bright smile on her face.
“Oh she’s just adorable,” you cooed. “I still haven’t heard from my family, but I’m sure a letter is on its way.”
“You married?” he asked.
You nodded your head and showed him the ring you had just put back on after leaving the OR.
“How the hell did you end up here then?” he asked.
“My husband’s got a medical condition that prevented him from being drafted, but they needed doctors so they took the next best thing,”
“So your kids are with him then?”
“Yeah, mom’s the one bringing in the paycheques for now,” you sighed. “How about you? Got a picture of your wife?”
B.J. nodded and pulled one out of his pocket. A wedding photo, a smiling couple right outside a chapel.
“She’s gorgeous,” you smiled. “You got yourself a catch there, B.J.”
“She’s the light of my life,” he tucked the photo away again. “Her and little Erin. I keep thinking that she’s probably grown up so much since I last saw her and I just wish…”
“You could be there at home, even just one night to tuck her in, give her a kiss, and read her a bedtime story?”
“Exactly,” he nodded. “You haven’t even been here that long, how’d you know?”
“It’s different for mothers,” you shrugged. “I could be away from them for an hour and feel like that. I just hope they always remember how much I love them and when the time comes I’ll be back with them again and I don’t plan on leaving.”
“Me neither. After this I’d be happy only taking out tonsils for the rest of my life,” he laughed.
“Man, maybe one day,” you chuckled with him. “But it’ll be back to the hospital for me. Only place that really needs trauma surgery stateside is the ER.”
“That exciting enough for you?” he asked.
“I found after coming back from the war, it was going to follow me around anyways. I may as well do something good with the experience.”
“So this is your second round?”
You nodded your head.
“Makes you wonder how they can find so many things to fight about. I thought the end of the Second World War was supposed to bring the Great Peace. But war only brings more violence and war.”
“I’ll drink to that,”
You clinked your coffee cups together and further engaged in light chatter while you ate and B.J. continued to write his letter.
“Any plans for this evening? They're showing a film, Trench Foot Through the Ages if I’m not mistaken,” he chuckled.
“I’m gonna take a nice shower and fall into my bed and hopefully not get up until late tomorrow morning.”
“If you think you can sleep through Radar’s rendition of Reveille I think you might be mistaken.”
“We’ll see about that,” you gave him a sly smile before nodding your head and getting on your way, wondering how you’d ever gotten to a point where you were very happy to see an army cot.

my understanding of val and sheila - a chorus line
(warning! this post is super long. also, im not a writer. so.)
in val's monologue she talks about how she was a better dancer than the people that got cast, it was just that she wasn't as conventionally attractive as the other women, so she didn't get cast. val then says, "but after a while i caught on. i mean, i saw what they were hiring," and then she looks to sheila, who has a knowing, proud look on her face. the immediate reaction to this is that sheila is getting cast because of her fuller figure, which is not untrue, but it is also val calling out sheila for relying on looks and being an inadequate dancer. remember, this is the sheila who stops dancing upon getting placed upstage, the sheila who always has a snarky remark about thr audition ready to go, the sheila who by the end, admits that maybe this is the end for her broadway career. sheila represents the women who val was losing jobs to, the ones she was better than, the ones who relied solely on their figure to get jobs, which is why val so blatantly calls sheila out in the middle of the audition. when you remember that val was losing jobs because of women like sheila (or more specifically because of the system which values conventionally attractive people more than those deemed "ugly." that being said, val doesn't take her anger out on the system, she takes her anger out on sheila) suddenly, sheilas jokes about only knowing choreography when she was in the front are not funny anymore, they're infuriating.
on the flipside of this, sheila is a woman who has been working for years, and she's tired now, and despite not being that old (she's only 30) she knows the business will not accept her as she ages. this is something val proves to her when she announces she got plastic surgery, and it did, in fact, change her life for the better. in fact, val's exact words are, "keep the best of you, do the rest of you." while this isn't directed at sheila at all, it is a sentiment that im sure strikes her in her heart, because it's something she's been thinking about herself (before "what i did for love" she has the line, "hell im 30. i mean, how many years do i have left to be a chorus cutie? 3? 4. if i get my eyes done.") also, when val is asked her age she says, "old. no- 25," which must be yet another blow to sheila, as she's the oldest woman on the line, and to hear the person who upstaged you call themselves old when they're only 5 years younger than you must burn.
(also note that sheila and val have similar introductions
SHEILA: I'm Sheila Bryant. Really Sarah Rosemary Bryant, which I really hate. I was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. And I'm gonna be 30 real soon, and I'm real glad.
VAL: Well, as far as I'm concerned, I'm Valerie Clark, but my parents think I'm Margaret Mary Houlihan. Couldn't you just die? I was born in the middle of nowhere, a little town called Arlington, Vermont. Bye-bye
ZACK: How old are you?
VAL: Old. No- 25
both women hate their birth names, and you easily could make the point that sheila associates her birth name with her home life, specifically her parents, which she states she tried to avoid, meaning they have the same reason for taking up stage names. then they both say where they're from and then they state their age. sheila states hers with faux confidence, as she knows she will soon be aged out of the business, while zack has to force val to share her age, she even prefaces it by saying she's old, despite the fact that she's not, because she too is feeling the years creep up on her. (again, she's not old, nor do i think either of these women are old, but show business is loaded with misogyny).
it is also important to note that both women express the desire to move out of dancing. val says she's gotten into acting, and sheila admits that she might consider teaching. the difference, however, is that in leaving to teach, sheila would essentially be giving up her career (see cassie's line in her monologue, "and what i really don't want to do is to teach other people what i should be doing myself." this line is cassie stating that being a dance teacher would be a miserable last resort for her), while val would still be in the business, just a different part of the business. but still, both have realized dancing is not for them.
sheila also has the line, "and then your 25, and then you say 'just a couple of years more.' hell im 30..." and then she continues on about not having left to be in the chorus. while this line is about herself, this is also something that im sure resonates with val, as she is 25, and here she is auditioning for the chorus, and here's sheila telling her what her future will look like. this fear that sheila has, it's in val too, which is why shes forced herself into acting, it gives her another avenue to perform, but it is not a guaranteed path to success, it's just something to keep her in the game a little longer.
at the end of the day, sheila and val are the same person just at different times in their life, and im sure in five years, val will be someone's sheila, and a younger woman will be her val, and the cycle will continue.
and in the end, both of these women's feelings toward each other and themselves are validated when val gets cast and sheila doesn't.

If you had to choose, who would you want in therapy more: Kathryn Janeway or Margaret Houlihan?
ohhhh interesting!!! both of them would be a whole lotta work for a therapist.
i think there's a real right answer to this though and it's kathryn janeway, because:
a) her mental health has wide ranging consequences for many people under her command as a captain and later an admiral, and margaret's issues really only cause problems for herself and maybe a few dudes who deserve it, and
b) i think janeway would engage with it* and actually benefit!!
*i think that after voyager, janeway is well aware that this journey fucked her up. after the ordeal she went through i imagine starfleet would order her in for counseling support/evaluation if she didn't volunteer for it.
that counselor would have a lot of work ahead of them to unravel the habit of being in charge of everyone/unable to show honest weakness, but i think once trust was established, janeway would actually appreciate it.
i also think she would have made use of a Real Starfleet Counselor if one were on board voyager, because it's their job to counsel the captain and she respects people doing their job. they would meet all the time anyway because of the crew situation, and that would naturally develop into janeway using her as a sounding board. driveby therapy perhaps, but it would make her a little more open to help when she really needs it as opposed to Not Open At All.
meanwhile, from what i've seen of her so far, i don't know that margaret is capable of that level of self-reflection. even if she were in a starfleety situation where she could be ordered into showing up to counseling sessions (which of course she wouldn't be in her us army context unless a mental health crisis made her unable to do her job), would she get anything out of it??
i could be wrong!! but right not it seems like she thinks Nothing Is Wrong With Her, everything is wrong with everybody else. also, the things that caused her the most damage are the things she protects and relies on to get through the day.
in real life i have a lot of bones to pick with the catharsis model of therapy, but for real in her case i think therapy would have to fuck her up more before it could fix her. which could be great fun to do to her in a fanfic context! so yeah if anyone has snapped her in half through Situations and then put her back together i would be interested, and if no one has i might feel obligated someday.

❤️🧡🤍🩷💜A WLW ASK MEME❤️🧡🤍🩷💜 List the top 10 ladies you’ve been obsessed with Ever Of All Time! Then send this on to 5 sapphic mutuals 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩
Yes, fun! :D Thank you!!
Okay, I went fictional characters with this because I just don't really get obsessed with RL people outside of like a 5 year period between 2005-2010 where I followed select actors around to other shows. Also, there's only three ladies who I can confirm fit both 'obsessed' and 'ever of all time', so I've trudged through my entire childhood for every fictional lady who's helped shape my personality to round out the list.
In Chronological Order (to me not by air date):
Margaret Houlihan (M*A*S*H) -- Oh MASH reruns on the Hallmark channel, my beloved 💚 Now, I'm primarily talking about the juicy middle seasons after Potter took over command and Loretta Swit was able to wrestle some better storylines for Margaret, but there's some gems in the early years too. I've been drawn back to MASH three times as an adult and each time I get sucked deeper and deeper into both the real life history of the Korean War and the fictional character of Margaret. Do I have a thousand and one headcanons for how she handles life after the war? Yes. Am I obsessed with whatever platonic/sexual relationship she's got going on with Hawkeye? Yes. Have I plotted out what her D&D character might look like? YEP! She's a paladin :P I also believe if you examined her character through a queer lens, you'd find a trans man rather than a queer woman, but your mileage may vary.
AndrAIa (ReBoot) -- Yeah, yeah, yeah it's a cartoon, but bb 11 year old me was absolutely OBSESSED with this show, and AndrAIa was a big part of that. Look at her little capital AI in her name! 😭 25 years before corporate greed ruined the acronym, that AI was adorable!! And very clever given that she was an NPC game sprite who decided to leave her game and live as a real sprite. Her whole existence and vibe was very formative for me. I love her.
Harley Davidson Cooper (Guiding Light) -- Yes, her full name is absolutely necessary, even if no one ever used it. So, I was SUUUCH a CBS soap girlie back around 2000-2002, and I've been very nostalgic for it in the last few years. As the World Turns was my primary soap, so I figured one of my regular blorbos like Rose or Katie or Romana would be the one I miss most. But then Harley's actress Beth Ehlers popped up during my Law & Order SVU watch and I LOST MY MIND!!!!! Her face and voice instantly filled my soul with joy! So Harley gets the trophy. Even if she didn't have any stand out storylines during that era (apart from her and Gus being Very Hot), she was always my favorite character from GL.
Piper Halliwell (Charmed, original flavor) -- Technically, I had Turtle Wexler from the book The Westing Game on this list instead because I didn't remember Piper until after I'd drafted all ten slots :S But listen! That's because health problems have made my memory shitty! It is not because Piper doesn't stand up to the test of time! Ugh, I remember the show never treated Piper like she was the fan favorite and I hadn't discovered online TV forums yet so I felt so alone in my love for her :( But being on lesbian millennial Tumblr makes 14 year old me feel SO validated, because Piper is the only Halliwell sister anyone ever talks about on my dash. 💜 Congrats everyone. We were right all along.
Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) -- Yeeeaaah.. we've hit the Big Three that I alluded to earlier. I was very, very gay for Lorelai (and Lauren Graham) in the latter half of my high school years, and I did not realize that until way later. She taught me how to be quicker with the comebacks and, more importantly, to marry someone who could cook instead of learning how to feed yourself. And I really took that to heart. My spouse is a fantastic cook! :) (Don't get scared for me guys! I do actually know how to cook three (3) entire meals now that I'm in my 30s :P lol)
Rose Tyler/Billie Piper (Doctor Who) -- I will list the actress here, because my love for Rose Tyler is probably split 50/50 between the character herself, and Billie Piper's charisma and hotness. She's gorgeous!!! 😍 That seemingly common question in the mid-2000s of 'Who would you kiss if you were gay?' always left me stumped until New Who aired in the states. Then, I was finally able to answer 'Billie Piper' and actually mean it. Because that's what you were supposed to do with that question, right? Take it seriously and not treat it like hyperbole? #totallystraightbehavior #swearsies Alas, it would take me two more girl crushes and interacting with genuine queer women in a femslash fandom before I recognized my feelings for what they were. But Rose was still a very significant step forward!
Myka Bering (Warehouse 13) -- MY GIRL!!! My Lady of all Ladies. I would die for her. I would kill for her. I would kneel and raise my sword and swear fealty to her. MYKA FUCKING BERING, EVERYONE! 👏👏👏👏 Watching her fall in love with Helena made me realize all my girl crushes were real crushes and that I was bi. Bless her. Bless Joanne Kelly. And bless the incomparable Bering and Wells fandom. *kisses everyone on the mouth, sloppy style*
Erin Gilbert (Ghostbusters 2016) -- Look, I know that I can never get away with pretending that Erin isn't my favorite ghostbuster, but I do usually think about her in the context of her relationships! Like 8 times out of 10, when I'm headcanoning, I'm thinking about her and Abby's relationship. And if I'm not, there's a not-so-small chance I'm thinking about her relationship with Patty instead. (RIP to Holtzy who I virtually never think about outside of the foursome. Her fanbase just ruined it for me :S) But um... yeah, Erin's my favorite. I even have Pokemon parties picked out for them all. And their daemons.
Eve (Lucifer) -- Okay so I know it hasn't even been a full high school (aka 4 years) since I met Eve, so I can't really say she's someone I'll stay obsessed with forever and ever and ever. You probably don't even believe I'm obsessed with her at all given the bulk of my Lucifer talk is about Lucifer/Chloe -- but that's just cause that's where the storyline is! Trust me, Eve is my favorite character, even if she was in the least amount of episodes (RIP me). When she pops up in the background of a Deckerstar fanvid, I'm instantly distracted and have to marathon every Maze/Eve vid in my collection. I decided to use a fandom name in the first time, like, ever, when creating my Lucifer-specific Twitter account and I made it Eve themed. She's my favorite, bestest girl who can do no wrong and -- YES! -- that does include accidentally-definitely-on-purpose starting a demon mutiny that led to newborn Charlie's kidnapping. She had never been dumped before okay? First woman to ever exist and she'd never been dumped. Did you handle your first break-up well? No! I didn't think so :P
Alex Cabot (Law & Order: SVU) -- I've only know Cabot for four months, but if anything happens to her, I'll kill everyone in this room and then myself -- OH WAIT! She already left me. 😭 I am in S17 now, which is like ten seasons past when she went into witness protection and barely ever came back, yet there's not an episode that goes by where I don't think about her. So, I say that counts as longevity and am sticking her on the list. This woman has Issues. Plural. Period. She makes me say shit like 'I want to dig into her brain with a fork' and it's actually an accurate metaphor for what I feel. I love her your honor... now who can I sue for emotional damages?

...When You Were Scared
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/9CPJYuF
by RemyFire
"What do you see?" she hisses.
BJ holds up his other fingers, a silent plea for quiet, and she doesn't dream of betraying it. He's a prankster. He's a quipper. He's put her underwear up a flagpole. But there's a calmer history between them, unlike with Pierce—that agonizing, lonely year with McIntyre where Margaret cycled between desperate want and furious embarrassment—and though she's all but trembling in the dark, BJ is still.
In a way, it's almost enough to make her disgusted at herself. She's lived on Army bases all her life, dreamed of making it her career, accomplished top marks in her training. This is supposed to be a way of life for her. Yet he's the one who is so sturdy.
For the first time, she catches herself wondering what he's lived through to make him learn to be so still in these moments of incredible fear.
