Disraeli: Dizzy (1.1, ATV, 1978)
"I am an Englishman and a member of the Church of England."
"Yes. But you are still, by birth, a Jew."
"Yes, which I have never denied nor tried to conceal."
"Precisely. Precisely. And that is what Melbourne meant. Even to have been elected to the House of Parliament, without anything else, would have been a triumph. You would not only have been an MP, but you would have been the first Jew ever to have entered the House of Commons. You must not take it to heart because the times and the centuries are against you."
"My only regret, father, is that there might not be another by-election for months, even years."
"You mean to try again, then?"
"Yes again, again, and again, father, and not only for ambition but for pride. I refuse to let myself be beaten."

Disraeli! one of the many lavish period studies that seemed to pop up in the late 70s and early 80s on uk tv‚#i was drawn to this after having enjoyed Napoleon and Love so much. first ep is a cleverly plotted bit of sketching in of the high society#scene in pre victorian england‚ all wife swapping and posturing but with the ever present threat of scandal to eclipse it all. McShane is#intense and very good and im pleased the series is wrestling with antisemitism already (so it's kind of a shame they didnt cast a jewish#actor). perennial fave Aubrey Morris shines in a small support role as Disraeli's aging‚ cautious father and Mary Peach is a wonderfully#studied sycophant; Leigh Lawson's d'Orsay has an Outrageous French Accent which must be seen to be believed..

Winding Up the Week #393
An end of week recap “Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.” – Virginia Woolf We will be heading off on a slightly delayed honeymoon, or honeymoomin as our waggish doggy-sitter (pun intended) insists on calling it, on 1st October for four days – only as far as York, but it will, I’m afraid, scupper next Saturday’s…

I've been making my way through Margaret Murray's The Witch-Cult in Western Europe for the past three days. lest I fall victim to the "silicate chemistry is second nature to us geochemists" effect, the work in question systematised, formalised and secularised older claims of witch hunts representing ecclesiastical persecution of an organised, continent-spanning witch religion, inadvertently laying down the foundations of modern neopaganism in the process; though Murray treated the cult primarily as a historic phenomenon, and did not necessarily think the witches were capable of performing real magic. I don't really feel qualified to offer my opinion on its merits as a scientific treatise bc a) I'm not a mediaevalist and b) I'm mainly treating the book as inspiration fodder for a Harry Potter fanfic, but—
one thing that stuck out to me (and which reminded me of Gimbutas, whose work I do have the qualifications to dismiss) is Murray's asinine habit of interpreting conjuctions between the rites of the witches and those of the Christians (such as, for instance, the high value the witches place on Candlemas and All Hallows' Eve) as evidence of the Christian rites being pre-/non-Christian in origin, and not the witches—all of whom were, for the lack of a better term, culturally Christian—appropriating and subverting elements of Christianity in service of their own religion. iirc, the latter is closer to the conclusion Carlo Ginzburg arrives at in The Night Battles, that Christian peasants independently reinvented shamanism out of bits and pieces of half-remembered Christian theology and were persecuted for it by ecclesiastical authorities. not that even this model can explain the entire phenomenon of the Early Modern witch hunts, but it's at least more logically sound than what Murray has going on
(actually, it's closer even to work on the witch-cult predating Murray. I believe Jules Michelet stated in The Sorceresses that the witch-cult originated in peasants abandoning Christianity in favour of nature-worship and magic-working; Charles Godfrey says something similar in the preface to Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches. I wonder if Murray was the first to claim the witches' religion predated that of their inquisitional oppressors)

You said people could ask you about podcast recfomendations?
Well then. I enjoyed tma, silt verses, mistleholme museum and old gods of appalachia. I liked the firsz season of archive 81 but not the second(didn't finish that). And i like wtnv but only in very very small doses.
hello !! I got a bunch of ideas, and I'm also putting in a few things you may enjoy despite not being directly related to the shows you've told me about :))
Margaret's Garden - this is a bit different from what you usually seem to enjoy, but I believe you could still like this one
ars PARADOXICA - okay this one is a tad long but I thoroughly enjoyed it, time travel is always fun but the way this specific story is told is quite captivating,
The Godfrey Audio Guide - I've only begun listening to this one but it was very enjoyable !! it obviously gave me Mistholme vibes, tho I do believe the story has nothing more in common than audio guides and museums
Malevolent - I think this one will be right up your alley, a horror masterpiece
I am in Eskew - just like Malevolent, I think you won't have any problem getting into this one !!
Red Valley - I LOVE Red Valley, and I think you may love it as well,,
Victoriocity - this has nothing to do with the rest but I wanted to give you something really funny as well, and this one is great, you should try it out !!
there you go friend !! ♡ hope you'll enjoy these recs !!

ABOUT
(Domestic violence and grooming cw)
Alice is the definition of a pathological people pleaser and has always been comfortable as a support player for those around her. She discovered a love for piano at a young age and always imagined that would be her future. The biggest wrench in that plan was meeting Godfrey Pembrooke, a guy who had no business hanging around a 13 year old when he was in his mid-20s. He said all the right, manipulative things and Alice was married before she turned 20. Godfrey showed his true colors soon afterwards, isolating Alice from her family and becoming increasingly physically and emotionally abusive. After a violent altercation that ended in her now ex-husband permanently damaging her hands (and ending her career), Alice moved from the Midwest to LA in hopes of learning her new normal. She’s lied to her friends and family about the injury and as far as they are concerned, her divorce was perfectly amicable.

New Scotland Yard: Evidence of Character (2.4, LWT, 1972)
"Who was with you?"
"No one."
"The girl?"
"No."
"Or was she waiting for you outside?"
"No, I tell you I never saw her except to glance at, once, in the bar."
"Where did you go when you left the pub?"
"I drove straight home."
"Arriving when?"
"I don't know, about eleven."
"Anybody there when you got in?"
"My mother."
"How was she dressed?"
"My mother?"
"The girl."

SPOILERS INCOMING; the episode actually ends with the murder unsolved and just a vague hint#that progress is being made‚ but Raymond's story is over by then‚ allowing for some fierce moral debate on the process of keeping criminal#records (he committed a minor crime 15 yrs ago which threatened to become public knowledge in this awful uptight village)#Kingdom is once again the voice of progressiveness‚ arguing that without a clean slate the possibility for a true new start is lost and the#threat of exposure is inhumane. no guesses which side arch dickhead Ward is on.. tho even he isn't that passionate about continued#persecution of those who have 'served their time'. Raymond is a great guest star‚ very real and very sad in a contained sort of way
