New Scotland Yard: Evidence of Character (2.4, LWT, 1972)
"Who was with you?"
"No one."
"The girl?"
"No."
"Or was she waiting for you outside?"
"No, I tell you I never saw her except to glance at, once, in the bar."
"Where did you go when you left the pub?"
"I drove straight home."
"Arriving when?"
"I don't know, about eleven."
"Anybody there when you got in?"
"My mother."
"How was she dressed?"
"My mother?"
"The girl."
#new scotland yard#evidence of character#1972#classic tv#peter wildeblood#bryan izzard#john woodvine#john carlisle#gary raymond#mary kenton#jack allen#michael beint#james hazeldine#margaret nolan#hilda braid#joan scott#ian burford#stella moray#andrea godfrey#kenneth scott#a very unusual episode‚ and all the more interesting for it. we open on the discovery of a corpse‚ and what initially appears to be an#examination of the prejudices and resentments of a small village; it *is* that‚ but what's surprising is that those ideas become so central#that they overtake the actual crime plot of the episode. gradually the script moves to centre instead on the personal life of Raymond's#henpecked garden centre owner (the gardening thing of course giving Kingdom some common ground to cover) so much so that its his story we#end up following and not the murder. SPOILERS INCOMING; the episode actually ends with the murder unsolved and just a vague hint#that progress is being made‚ but Raymond's story is over by then‚ allowing for some fierce moral debate on the process of keeping criminal#records (he committed a minor crime 15 yrs ago which threatened to become public knowledge in this awful uptight village)#Kingdom is once again the voice of progressiveness‚ arguing that without a clean slate the possibility for a true new start is lost and the#threat of exposure is inhumane. no guesses which side arch dickhead Ward is on.. tho even he isn't that passionate about continued#persecution of those who have 'served their time'. Raymond is a great guest star‚ very real and very sad in a contained sort of way

Ked's right, I do have book recs that you can find under this tag and also some on my writing blog here. I also have a page here where you can see what's on my bookshelf, but you can't filter it because Tumblr doesn't allow Java anymore >__>
I wouldn't call that page a rec list, though, it's just an inventory of what I own or what's on my list to own. Some of those books are objectively terrible and I will freely admit that, but there was something about them compelling enough that I read them more than once.
I didn't mean for the below to turn into me just reccing you authors but it kind of turned into that, so here are authors I would recommend:
Onley James - I love her so much that I support her Patreon. All of her stuff is good (and loosely connected) but my favorites are, of course, the Necessary Evils series. It has two spin-off series which I also very much enjoy: Jericho's Boys & The Watch. All three series surround the psychopaths in love trope, however Jericho's Boys and the first book in the Watch series do not feature it as a main trope because neither of the main characters fit the bill. Most of them do feature some level of kink, though.
Kiki Clark - Her main series is werewolves (but no Omegaverse) and it's called the Kincaid Pack. The first book is my favorite, but I own them all. It's finished and she's starting a new series in that 'verse, the prequel to which I think is The Mobster's Mate, which is so up my alley it's like someone was spying on me. She also has a MC/kink series called Leather & Chrome that's good, but it's not my favorite kink series. (Kiki also have other contemporary books that I love, I just don't want this to get too long)
SPEAKING of kink. Robin (RJ) Moray - She has a series called His Boy Next Door that gay-awakening, age gap, and BDSM-related. It has a spin-off series about two other characters called A Collar For His Brat, both are excellent. The only thing is in HBND, the main character's name is Channon and that took some getting used to. Robin also has other books which I highly recommend--including a space Omegaverse story called Changed: Mated to the Alien Alpha, which is very good--she is probably my Top 3 favorite authors and the fact that more of her stuff isn't available in paperback is a source of constant misery for me.
Eliot Grayson -- The only person I can think of off the top of my head that writes well-written first person POV. The Mismatched Mates series is her main title iirc. It's a soul-bonding / "mate or die" situation at first and segues eventually into "mating for convenience." Some stories are related and some aren't.
Stella Starling -- if you like high fluff and low angst, this is the author for you. All of her stuff is contemporary and very cute. My favorite series is the Semper Fi one but I like & own them all.
Sam Burns (and Sam Burns w/ W.M. Fawkes) - They do anything fantasy/magic-related. Werewolves, urban fantasy, there's a series about the Greek Gods, etc. I haven't read ALL of their works, but the stuff I have read, I like. My favorites / the ones I own: Wolves of Kismet (Omegaverse), the Star-Marked Warrior series (sci-fi/aliens), & Wolf Moon Rising (Omegaverse).
Ella Frank (and Ella Frank w/ Brooke Blaine) - Contemporary writer(s) that specialize in writing multiple books for the same couple. There's a lot of gay/bi-awakening. The Temptation series is a fantastic audiobook journey that I cannot recommend enough, that narrator was amazing. I also really liked the first three Fallen Angel books are about the same couple and I love them, the fourth FA book is about a different couple and I DNFed it. Couldn't say why, it just didn't hold my interest.
...I have more, but I should probably work at some point this morning. So if you want more / want a specific rec for a specific trope or genre, lemme know!

Anthro Mecha Universe in a nutshell because I am very far from having the first arc plotted out but I want to talk about it.
At some point Kaiju happen for some reason, probably science related. The first one to arrive is an eldritch abomination that creates portals, and a few of that flavour still occur, but most are either pollution-mutants, demons, angels, science-mutants or rogue AIs.
Everyone is anthropomorphic animals, except invertebrates, which fill the roles taken by regular non-anthropomorphic animals (with one exception that I'll get into later).
There's also a fascist government who are slowly invading and taking over independent regions, kinda like a more evil version of the NCR from New Vegas. They're called the New Argent Federation, and their president is Luther Blake (he/him, 65, saltwater crocodile). He has an underling who is basically a cross between Darth Vader, the Auditor from Brigador, and Pyro from TF2, piloting a mech that looks a bit like Necrozma.
Mech pilots are usually sorted into teams, kinda inspired by Sonic. Each team has a minimum of three pilots, though the number of mechs can be lower since some require multiple pilots (which is taken to extremes by Ironclad, a gigantic warship-themed mech piloted by 50 people). Mechs have different classes, but I won't be talking about them in this post because I can't be bothered.
The main team is Burst Team, composed of people who lack formal training, but still know how to do mech stuff mostly. The members are Stella Fawkes (she/her, 24, goblin shark), pilot of the Stygia, which is made partially out of old boats, submarines and diving mechs; Jim Autumn (he/him, 22, potoo), pilot of the Crimson Star, which he inherited from his mother after she retired; and Sue Simons (she/they, 23, moray eel), pilot of a mech I haven't named yet, which is designed for kaiju research but has had a giant rifle haphazardly bolted to the front.
Their rivals are Rage Team, who are all nepo-babies who pilot advanced mechs equipped with powerful but impractical weapons. The members are Harry Valero (he/him, 23, ocelot), pilot of the Valero Veloce MKIII Concept, an experimental high-speed mech; Miranda Jensen (she/her, 26, fox), pilot of the Starlet, a more humanoid mech with giant wings; and Brad Octavius (he/him, 25, rhinoceros), pilot of a mech I haven't named yet, which is a combat mech using parts from sports mechs.
Survivor Team are like. Pilots who were injured in the course of being a pilot, but kept doing it regardless. While I won't list all their members (because it would take too long and also the roster is far from complete), I do want to highlight Greg Phoenix (he/him, 53, kiwi), whose wife died during battle with a particularly powerful kaiju; he used parts of her mech to upgrade his own one, and named the result "Barbara" in memory of her. Also one of the characters is a Frogfish called Cora Reeve.
Terror Team are the big scary elite dudes, who are also big celebrities, with merch and sponsorships and stuff.
Advance Team are a bunch of giant neeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrds! Their mechs are more experimental (e.g a perfectly-spherical design with stretchy limbs so it can travel far distances quicker, and the body of a dead kaiju that's piloted by an electric eel who uses his natural electricity to puppet it).
Unity Team are just like a vague concept I have at the moment, but basically they have seven members in colour-coded mechs that can fuse together into a larger robot because Power Rangers (and also like. Sentai and Voltron and stuff) pastiche.
Outlier Team are the most interesting, as their members are all from species who aren't standard anthropomorphic animals, including a dimensionally-displaced human, a genetically-modified crab with full sapience and an inexplicable New York accent, an alien from a eusocial species with hundreds of genders, and an ancient robot that resembles an opabinia.
The Kaiju incident is called "The Intrusion", and started with an interdimensional worm monster emerging through a portal, which caused pollutive chemicals to become a powerful mutagen, alerted the setting's equivalents of Heaven and Hell, caused bioengineered creatures to mutate and escape from a lab that's still producing them, and made all the AIs in charge of various facilities go rogue. The results are Pollution (mutated invertebrates mostly, though sapient beings can also become Pollution Kaiju with prolonged exposure to the mutagen or if they eat the flesh of one), Dimensional (Kaiju from other dimensions or even between dimensions, with impossibly alien appearances and, if this ends up being a webcomic or whatever, different artstyles/mediums), Demonic (self-explanatory; in my document about all the characters, I describe them as having "Lots of flames, magma, mouths, leathery wings, pieces of brutalist architecture, masses of flesh, insect limbs, dangling chains, horns"), Angelic (again, self-explanatory; in my document about all the characters, I describe them as having "Lots of clouds, crystals, eyes, feathery wings, pieces of gothic architecture, intricate stained-glass panels, sea slug tentacles, flowing cloth, halos"), Biotech (biomechanical, in a similar way to the Combine Synths from Half-Life 2), and AI (literally just artificial intelligences that were originally in charge of facilities and stuff, but went rogue during The Intrusion and have built themselves bodies) Kaiju.
There's an ancient civilisation of prehistoric vertebrates who had robots based on prehistoric invertebrates (which also filled the roles of animals), as well as "walking buildings" that are essentially early mechs, consisting of Greco-Roman buildings held up by large, articulated statues.

The more Stella observed the twins, the more she noticed unusual things about those two.
Tumblr media
She had been watching over the two for a few weeks now, and she couldn't help but feel that something was very off about them. They seemed to be normal octopus and eel mers at first, if a bit stunted. They were very poor swimmers for mers their age, and were unusually scared of pretty much everything. Thankfully now they mellowed out and act more like typical young mers.
But that wasn't what concerned her now.
She pulled Terry and Kent aside while the kids played.
"Hey uh, guys? Have you two noticed anything... strange about Dino and Dina?"
Terry quirked a brow. "What? Like them sucking at existing for the longest time? Yeah I think we've all noticed."
"No, not that! I mean... the way they look," Stella hissed.
Terry and Kent both glanced back at the twins before facing Stella once more. Kent, who was munching away on a large fish he caught, gave the nurse shark mer a perplexed look.
"Little dudes look fine to me," he mumbled between bites of grouper. "Sure they're a little weird but I don't see why that matters."
Stella flicked an ear. "It's just the little things. Have you ever seen a moray eel mer with bioluminescent spotting like what Dina has? Or spiky ears?"
The tiger and great white shark mers both glance back at the kids again.
"I guess thats a little odd. I assumed she just had a mutation or something, but now that you mention it, I don't even think mutations can cause glowing spots like hers." Terry narrowed his eyes and began to lazily swim around Kent and Stella as he pondered what Stella had said.
"And what about Dino? Looks like your typical octopus mer. Nothin' weird about that," Kent asked before polishing off his snack, casually tossing aside what was left of the grouper.
Stella glared at him. "What kind of octopus mer has slitted pupils instead of horizontal ones? EVERY octopus mer has those! Octopus mers don't have spikes on their faces either."
The three sat in silence for a bit.
A look of horror slowly crept onto Stella's face as a realization dawned on her and she harshly pulled Terry and Kent close to her by their vests and through gritted teeth, hissed "those two are NOT FUCKING OCTOPUS AND EEL MERS."
Terry and Kent's eyes widened, but before they could question Stella's conclusion, a shout from behind them caught their attention.
The twins were lying in the sand. Dino had his claws held up around something, his eyes illuminated a cold purple glow.
Stella quickly swam up to him only to take notice of what Dino held. Hovering just in front of his claws, were the skeletal remains of the grouper Kent had eaten. It stared back at Dino, the glow in its eye sockets reflecting Dino's own.
Dina stared in awe at the sight, but Stella was horrified.
"Oh HELL NO."
