The Texas Marfa Lights

The mysterious Marfa Lights are located East of Marfa, TX on US 90. There's a viewing area where people can witness strange colored lights on the horizon, oddly appearing and fading quickly. Some say the lights are pale blue, others say the lights are a bright white. Whichever color, they are miles in the distance, but easy to see.

Skeptics believe the lights are just reflections off of traveling cars. The town of Marfa swears they are a unexplainable phenomenon, and celebrates their wonder every year on Labor Day.

We left a bit more sore, ragged, and worn than we arrived. Upon arrival to Marfa, El Cosmico’s warm quarters, soothing baths, and warm coffee greeted us with open arms. Monster: Leviathan “The air tore itself apart, spewing sparks of bubbling reality and coruscating halos. From its epicenter emerged a legless spherical organism, like the trunkless head of an elephant the size of a car. It stunk of radiator fluid and compost. Where the trunk would have been was a tangle of cerulean multi-jointed limbs that reached out and snatched up Pete. Their epidermis pocked with wet, bulbous black eyes and blisters hissing with orange and green flame. Pete let out a brief yelp before his voice was cut off by the crackling din of the portal closing behind him. He was pulled through the fabric of the cosmos, down into the hidden places never meant for the human animal. Down into the shadows his body was dragged by hungry claws, teeth, and tendrils, through a membrane of slug flesh and electricity. The leviathan struggled to pull him past this first barrier, dragging Pete up and down its surface, his consciousness trying frantically to hold on as it transitioned between his reality into the secret ones that paralleled it. When the leviathan found a place where the barrier was thinnest, its flaying limbs tore into the flesh between dimensions. Marfa is a town I don’t belong to but I still want to know all its secrets. It is a terribly human thing: to drop ourselves somewhere, someone—ask them immediately about the things that make them tick. What does it take to become more than a tourist to someone else’s story? But I left you before the night was over. So we remain unsolved, unresolved, a mystery as haunting as those Marfa Lights, orbs twinkling in the desert. The Native Americans believed they were fallen stars; old cattle herders thought, “Apache campfires.” Science says—car headlights, refraction, optical illusion, mirage. Does it matter? For a hot summer minute, you were mine No matter how blinking or intermittent, A light I couldn’t look away from.
