It was on Kongregate, and at the time I was playing every goddamn thing on Kongregate that looked even mildly interesting! And years later I found it on steam and immediately bought it because I'd always loved it so much I felt the dev deserved something from me. (I Fell in Love With) The Majesty of Colors is a beautiful little game.
Gotta know if this is a unique experience, but it's somehow always shocking to me that people I know and/or follow read the same webcomics as me, even though I know I read popular comics. "Wait, Prokopetz reads Questionable Content and Girl Genius???"
It's the exact opposite of the impulse to assume your media consumption is universal and being honestly confused when people don't catch your references. It turns out there's surprisingly little middle ground between "obviously everyone has played (I Fell in Love With) The Majesty of Colors, the 2008 indie Flash game about a vast and amorphous horror from the pelagic depths getting a balloon" and "wait, you've heard of Star Trek?"!
#honorable mention to Sonny which I have not bought the steam version of bc the reviews say it's not as good as the original on Kongregate#and to MARDEK RPG which I was never very good at#and I guess the Epic Battle Fantasy series but I don't think I ever Got the full point of those bc I've never played Final Fantasy#I was playing games on Kongregate because that was all I had access to as a teenager

me: i'm going to be good and use this time off for surgery to actually play games from my steam library that i haven't played before
also me: buys mardek rpg on steam despite having played it for probably at least a hundred hours on kongregate because i kept forgetting about it and then coming back years later and not having completion saves from the first two chapters to carry over (not strictly necessary to actually play but required for some of the bonus content in the 3rd chapter and also would be super annoying to have to re-learn all the skills)
#don't think i ever finished the third chapter but i played the first 80% literally at least 3 times#anyway. good game#it has very simple but fun systems for combat where you a) react at the right time to apply offensive/defensive reaction skills#and b) learn skills and reactions by equipping items and then mastering them so that you can use them while unequipped#EXCELLENT and very satisfying to be completionist about#also zach gets more powerful the more kills you have with him and you'd have to start over if you didn't have the saves

poor attempt at semirealism that i tried doing this afternoon! it’s not too great but it’s done so i might as well post it...i haven’t done semirealism in years so it definitely needs work :P this is emela from mardek, a flash game series i played a ton as a child that heavily inspired me to draw when i was younger!! replayed it recently and it’s really good; it’s also pretty cheap on steam so check it out if you wanna try a pokémon-like RPG

[my own game] #9 – exploring game concept
Challenge: How can I decide on what the game play of my 2D elemental platformer will be?
Together with my duo project teammate we worked on developing further the game concept for our 2D elemental platform game in a ten-page game design document format. I wanted to ideate on exactly how our game can be played and what the player can do and experience in order to make the concept less abstract.
Methodology
I approached this challenge mostly by brainstorming with my duo project teammate on the game design document elements taking into account the storytelling aspect of our game. I researched existing concepts and took inspiration from existing games in order to incorporate best practices. We created a mood and inspiration board in Pinterest where we saved aesthetics inspos. Furthermore, I did some sketching of game mechanics and level design.
DOT framework methods used:
Resources
"Ten"-Page Game Design Document - template & tutorial - From Scott Rogers - Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design
Concepts:
Elemental swords - World of Quest Fandom Wiki
Ability Tree (Ori and the Blind Forest) - Ori and the Blind Forest Fandom Wiki
Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors - All The Tropes Fandom Wiki
Rock paper scissors game in Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series:
Products
Sketching possible swords with mechanics
Sketching game overview and example level design
Sketching Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors. To be honest, the version from the RPG game MARDEK sounds the most logical so perhaps we will go with it. It is not in the sketch above so I quote it here: “MARDEK RPG actually had a sensible explanation for all four interactions: Water extinguishes Fire, Fire consumes Air, Air erodes away Earth, and Earth absorbs Water.”
Our Pinterest mood and inspiration board could be found here.
Our current ten-page game concept document could be found here.
Next
After working on the game concept, I actually feel more familiar and comfortable with the game I want to create. I came up with new ideas for the game, improved old ideas and brainstormed on how the game will actually be played and what the player can do and experience in the game. This will help me during later phases such as implementation because I already have the rules of my game.
