2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man was better than I thought it would be, and in the titular role Andrew Garfield manages to pull off the youthfulness of an origin story Peter Parker, and that’s something coming initially off being a steadfast fan of the Tobey Maguire continuity (although Tom Holland is objectively the best). Emma Stone was a good choice for Gwen Stacy, and the chemistry between her and Garfield is strong, and while Curt Connors/The Lizard is a questionable choice for an origin villain, Rhys Iran’s puts on a strong performance. The only real flaw aside from some iffy special effects work is that the story feels like a retread of the Raimi things, possibly too soon after the fact, and the desire from Sony to build a cinematic universe around Spider-Man’s rogue and hero gallery is readily apparent next to the then burgeoning MCU, but it is pretty solid. The score from James Horner is great too, taking a slightly more dramatic approach than Danny Elfman, and wholly owning its identity. Can’t say no to good Spider-Man content. Film available on home media and streaming services, soundtrack available on iTunes and Spotify.
