Missed writing on my blog so I took a little time on writing this review with my friend @kopicinco last weekend, which is actually one of my long overdue reviews😁This is one of the rarest and underrated finds that I bought for my collection and I hope some of you would love to read this book just as we did 💙

Do you live with a disability? Or are you close to someone who does? . After all the research I did for KNIFE, I thought I knew a fair bit about mobility and accessibility issues. But when my father needed to use a walker and then a wheelchair, I learned so much more about the challenges that wheelchair and other mobility device users face on a regular basis. Sometimes I felt angry for my Dad’s sake, seeing how little thought is often given to the needs of people who can’t slip easily through narrow doorways or climb stairs. . Anyway, July is Disability Awareness Month, and I’ve got a post up at Go Teen Writers today about including disabled characters in our storytelling. So here’s a stack of books from my own library that feature protagonists with various kinds of disabilities. They’re all good, and many of them are personal favourites of mine. But we need a lot more! . . . #disabilityawareness #disabilityinclusion #disabilitypridemonth #disabledlivesmatter #loismcmasterbujold #thewarriorsapprentice #anneursu #therealboy #meganwhalenturner #thequeenofattolia #queensthief #francescoxstork #marcelointherealworld #elizabethewein #elizabethwein #thelionhunter #leighbardugo #sixofcrows #yalovin #yareads #ireadya #bookstagram #bookish #bookstack #bluebooks #bluebookstack #blueandcream https://www.instagram.com/p/CCwrpJjAV1X/?igshid=lv0jygyc7nzo

The first glass art piece I did while listening to the audiobook of Marcelo in the real world. I’m so proud of this piece not sure what to call it just yet. But I love it. I was mostly inspired by a scene where the main to characters are camping and looking out at the stars. It’s slabs of glass, paint, glitter, makeup and pieces of luffa. I missing taking out my emotions on things like this. I still have extra glass and I might do more. (I also did a review on the novel you can check out the link in my bio) #art #artistsoninstagram #artist #marcelointherealworld #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookart #bookartwork #artinspiredbybooks #glassartwork #painting #makeupartwork #abstractart #strugglingartist #booklover #youtuber https://www.instagram.com/p/CMI3gP5Ao9_/?igshid=niy13vkfjfhm

Staring Marcelo in the Real World. I was a huge fan of Last Summer of the Death Warriors when I read it freshman year in my high school. I’m sure I’ll love this. "My special interest is God." -Francisco Stork, Marcelo in the Real World So I'm flippin' stuffs inside my bag when I saw this note inside my notebook. All at once, everything that I love about Marcelo came back in a flash. I can still remember how genuine he is and how he tried living the "real world" his father wants. It's cruel, but his perception in life gave him serenity. For special people like Marcelo, they tend to focus their attention to one special interest and for him, it will always be God. . . . . . . . #marcelointherealworld #franciscostork #Autism #scribble (at Quezon City, Philippines)

Marcelo in the Real World170220

Marcelo in the Real World
Francisco X. Stork published Marcelo in the Real World in 2009. I was unable to find a controversy that it caused when it came out, which is a bit surprising with its sexual content and the way that the character Wendell speaks about women. It really does seem to be well liked by those who read it (which granted, is not very many because it is not hugely popular). Due to the fact that the book has not become hugely popular there are not many fandoms for it. Common sense media (who gives parental warnings for books) said “This is a beautifully written, carefully constructed, thought-provoking and moving story, with a kind of loving wisdom all too rare in fiction these days.” The New York Times said “in the skillful hands of Francisco X. Stork, 17-year-old Marcelo Sandoval is the bravest, most original hero I’ve met in years.”
The book is mostly set in modern day Boston, MA. It actually is really important to know the setting for this book because of the autism that Marcelo has. People were not widely aware of autism until the 70’s and 80’s, and there certainly would not have been a school for Marcelo to go to that would have nurtured him and other children like him. It is written from both a first and a third person perspective, but the third person perspective is only a part of it because a portion of Marcelo’s autism manifests itself in his talking in the third person so it really is predominantly in the first person from Marcelo’s perspective.
I would absolutely teach this book in a classroom. I have yet to read a book that speaks to the everyday experience of autism as well as Marcelo in the Real World does. I believe it is very important for students to understand what other students with autism are going through so they can be more understanding and kind. One of the most popular quotes I saw on the internet was “Maybe I don’t feel what others feel. I have no way of knowing. But I do feel. It’s just that what I feel does not elicit tears. What I feel when others cry is more like a dry, empty aloneness, like I’m the only person left in the world.” I love this quote because it shows to the readers that there is something to empathise with even if they cannot fully understand the experience of a person with autism. I believe this book really should be far more popular than it is and that it should be popular for a long time.

Marcelo has to be one of the most compassionate and morally, level headed character I’ve read in a long time. I’m not a huge realistic contemporary reader but I loved this book.
