Day of Cantabria Institutions

The Day of Cantabria Institutions is on July 28 and marks the anniversary of when the autonomous province of Cantabria was created. Many people outside of Spain may not know of Cantabria. We’ll go out on a limb and say most of us don’t know Spain beyond Madrid and Barcelona. Cantabria’s story is proof of that. Cantabria is an independent province in the north of Spain, famous for its natural and cultural beauty. With a way of life and identity unlike other parts of Spain, it’s no surprise why Cantabrians are a proud people.

History of Day of Cantabria Institutions

Most of us may think Spain is a culturally homogenous country but it is not so. In reality, Spain comprises several autonomous regions. Each one possesses a certain level of self-governance and distinct cultural identities. Cantabria on the northern coast is one such example.

Centuries ago, history first recorded the emergence of a region called Cantabria – home to one of the fiercest Celtic tribes the world had seen. The region’s history goes as far back as 36000 B.C. to 9000 B.C. Stories of a fascinating past are evident from the 6,500 caves in Cantabria — 60 of which contain cave paintings by people in the Paleolithic Age.

Eventually, the region came under the control of the Roman Empire despite the Cantabrians putting up a courageous fight. Cantabria was one of the last places to fall. The Roman conquest ushered in an era of turmoil, where everyone from the Visigoths to the Moors tried taking control of Cantabria. The region finally merged with local kingdoms such as Castile and Asturias.

At the turn of the 18th century, interest in the unique Cantabrian identity arose once again. Several movements of cultural and social resurgence ensued. Around this time, the Cantabrians become serious about forming an independent province. The first attempt took place at the start of the century but was unsuccessful. The wheels began to turn again at the end of the 18th century. Finally, the province of Cantabria was officially born in 1778. Today, Cantabria is an autonomous region in Spain. The Day of Cantabria Institutions commemorates the journey to self-governance and the people��s freedom.

Hi! I’ve been trying to find a good cuneiform version of the Epic of Gilgamesh and have been completely unsuccessful (mostly because I’m not interested in buying one, just finding one online or at the library). Regardless, all I’m trying to find is the cuneiform for a couple of lines early in Tablet 1: in Mitchell’s English version, “Take out the tablet of lapis lazuli. Read/how Gilgamesh suffered and accomplished all.” (p.70) I was wondering if you could help me out with this in any possible?

Hello! I don't have the cuneiform but can maybe help you on your way. These lines are ll. 26-28 of tablet I in the Standard Babylonian version. George translates them as "[Open] the lid of its secret, [lift] up the tablet of lapis lazuli and read out / all the misfortunes, all that Gilgamesh went through!" Helle (2021) opts for "Open the door to its secrets, / take up the tablet of lapis lazuli and read aloud: / read of all that Gilgamesh went through, / read of all his suffering."

The Akkadian for this is

[pi-te-m]a bāba(ka2) ša2 ni-ṣir-ti-šu2 [i-š]i ma ṭup-pi {na4}-uqnî(za-gin) ši-tas-si [mim-m]u-u2 {dingir}-Giš-gim2-maš ittallaku(du-du)-{ku} ka-lu mar-ṣa-a-ti

The portions not in italics in (parenthesis) are the sign form of the prior word, while those in {brackets} are written determiners; neither are spoken aloud. [Square brackets] are fragmentary and are assumed. This means the pronunciation would be Pitema bāba ša niṣirtišu / Iši ma ṭuppi uqnî šitassi / Mimmu Gišgimmaš ittallaku kalu marṣāti (or something close to it, my Akkadian isn't great so forgive any errors!)

Unfortunately there's no actual cuneiform copy of the tablet I can find online, but if an Akkadianist reading this can help with the exact signs I'm sure the asker would appreciate it!

Samhain Ritual 2024 Excerpt - The Story & History of Samhain

While I'm not leading the Samhain ritual, my coven/circle is leading, I am helping with some sections of it! Notably, I wrote the section about the history of Samhain and how we celebrate it today. I thought I'd share it here like I've done with my other scripts, so I hope y'all enjoy it! (Note: I am not a Celtic pagan, so please excuse me if any information is wrong! I've included the bibliography at the end.)

Samhain is the final harvest before winter when the veil between the physical and spirit worlds is thinnest. Celebrated alongside Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and All Saint’s Day, Samhain marks the end and beginning of the Wheel of the Year as we enter the darkest half of the year.

Samhain, as we know it to be currently, originates from ancient Celtic traditions. It was celebrated in the British Isles as the “night between years,” when the dead walked among mortals. The most important of the four Celtic festivals was a time to take stock of crops before the frost and honor the ancestors. 

Many of our modern Halloween traditions come from old Celtic traditions. The aos sí (ace SHE), fairy-like spirits, were left food and drink outside to avoid their mischief, such as killing livestock during the winter. People went door-to-door in costumes to blend in with the aos sí and collected offerings, a predecessor to trick-or-treating. Rather than pumpkins, turnips were carved with faces to symbolize the spirits crossing over and ward off malevolent ones.

There were several Celtic deities and entities who were and still are associated with Samhain. The Pooka, a shapeshifting Irish figure often depicted as a dark horse with fiery eyes, roamed the countryside, causing mayhem, and was a bringer of both good and bad fortune. Cerridwen, the cauldron-keeper Welsh triple goddess of the underworld, and The Morrigan, the Irish triple goddess of war, death, and fate, were both commonly associated with Samhain due to their associations with the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.

Samhain has become a tradition among modern pagans and is included in the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. The most important of the four greater Sabbats it’s a time to reconnect with ancestors, such as decorating altars with candles and mementos of loved ones who have passed. Divination, a typical ancient Celtic Samhain practice, is also a modern activity. Samhain is also an excellent time for shadow work and exploring your unconscious self.

In modern Wiccan practices, Samhain is associated with the Crone, the final of the Triple Goddesses. She’s one to go to for advice and teaches us that sometimes we need to let go to move on. The God of Samhain, The Horned One, is the animal that dies so we may eat and survive the winter. Gods and Goddesses not from Celtic lore but still associated with Samhain include Persephone, Hades, and Hecate from Hellenic tradition, Anubis and Osiris from Kemetic mythology, and Freya, Hel, and Odin from the Norse path.

Take this time to connect with the past, present, and future as the Wheel of the Year turns once more.

Now that Donald Trump has won the White House for a second time, the path ahead seems clear for him to brush off key federal criminal indictments that have dogged him for years while potentially delaying other cases he faces in state court. By securing the presidency, he can use the awesome powers of the executive to seemingly shield from scrutiny any illegal conduct that he would deem part of his “official” duties. When the U.S. Supreme Court enshrined immunity for official acts of former presidents and “at least presumptive immunity” for acts on the outer perimeter of official duties, the majority did so amid the dissent of the three liberal justices.

When reading her dissent aloud from the bench in July, Justice Sonia Sotomayor had bristled: “Ironic isn’t it? The man in charge of enforcing laws can now just break them.” When writing her dissent, which was joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Kentanji Brown Jackson, she concluded that the court had henceforth created a “law-free zone around the president, upsetting the status quo that has existed since the founding.” And now Trump is heading back to that “law-free zone.” Here’s the state of his ongoing cases and how they will likely proceed:

The Jan. 6 Case

Special counsel Jack Smith’s criminal prosecution of Trump for his alleged conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021, is likely first on the chopping block, considering that Trump has both vowed to fire Smith in “two seconds” and threatened to throw him “out of the country.” Trump faces four felony charges in the Washington, D.C., case: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding and, for his alleged intimidation of voters, conspiracy against rights.

Trump has vowed for over a year to see the federal insurrection case dismissed. He has argued that Smith’s appointment is unconstitutional and that he has been vindictively prosecuted. Most important, he has argued that his conduct on and before the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was official and therefore protected by presidential immunity. The Supreme Court found in July that former presidents cannot be charged for any “official” conduct but that anything that falls beyond the scope of “official” duties is fair game. This decision forced Smith to revise Trump’s indictment before presiding U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan.

Chutkan signed an order on Oct. 28 that granted Trump until Nov. 21 to file a motion explaining why the case should be dropped on presidential immunity grounds, and Smith’s team did not oppose that request. Before his victory, Chutkan was in position to weigh both arguments and decide which changes would stay or go based on the immunity ruling. As of October, deadlines in the case were still set for well into December. Trump was widely expected to appeal any ruling that did not wipe away the charges anyway, eventually putting the matter back before the Supreme Court, but now all of that looks to be essentially moot. Under Justice Department policy established in the 1970s, sitting presidents cannot be indicted because it would interfere with their duties. The election interference case is expected to be dropped as soon as Trump is inaugurated. The only thing standing in the way of that outcome is an attempt by the judge to reject any dismissal effort by the Justice Department or, if Smith is fired, an attempt by Congress to see the special counsel restored.

The Classified Documents Case

Trump was accused of hoarding classified records at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after he left the White House in 2021. The 37-count case was dismissed less than two weeks after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling because U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon found that Attorney General Merrick Garland did not have authority to appoint Smith to prosecute Trump. The decision was controversial, and Smith appealed, citing decades of contrary legal precedent. Oral arguments for the appeal haven’t been scheduled yet. Once Trump takes office, he needs only to turn to prosecutors at the Justice Department and encourage them to drop the case. Notably, ABC News reported shortly before Election Day that Trump had floated the idea of Cannon replacing Garland as attorney general.

State Cases

Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records after a jury in New York determined he made illegal sought to conceal hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election. Trump is scheduled for sentencing in this matter on Nov. 26 before Judge Juan Merchan. But because presidents don’t have the authority to interfere with or stop state prosecutions, there’s not much Trump can do to make the case disappear during his presidency. However, his sentencing will likely be delayed indefinitely — or at least until 2029, when his term in office would end.

Trump still faces eight felony charges in Fulton County, Georgia, for allegedly criminally conspiring to overturn the state’s election results and engaging in a racketeering conspiracy with a slew of his allies and advisers that state prosecutors say were hellbent on advancing bogus electoral slates for Trump — even after it was clear Democrat Joe Biden had won the presidential vote in Georgia.

The case was thrown off track this year after Trump’s co-defendant Michael Roman alleged that Fulton County prosecutor Fani Willis had an improper romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the lawyer Willis tapped to lead the probe into the alleged conspiracy. Arguments on whether Willis should be disqualified do not get underway at the Georgia Court of Appeals until December, and a decision could take months. With Willis declared as winner in her reelection bid Tuesday night, the indictment is expected to stay on ice.

While Donald Trump won, not all of his legal problems will go away entirely, as he could continue to face state charges.

As for federal crimes, Trump will be let off scot free.

Over the course of 2022 you’ll occasionally see a guy in the crowd with a cardboard box on his head. That’s Kip Sabian, out of kayfabe he was dealing with recovering from a shoulder injury? It lasted a while and when he recovered he came back as a my chemical romance lookin’ dude who may or may not have thought the cardboard box was controlling him? The gimmick didn’t get over so it got dropped pretty fast. He also had a short feud again against Orange Cassidy in 2023 when Orange had the All-Atlantic Championship– he got under Orange’s skin so bad! Anyway thats neither here nor there.
