Reading. Back in the day, you had to buy or rent a physical copy of the publication you wanted to read (or the disks for your audiobook). I can remember being so hyped to read a book, only to find my library didn't have it (I was & am a hardcore bookworm). Now we have access to all types of publications online, often for free. You can buy or even borrow digital copies of books, magazines, newspapers, & audiobooks.

Shopping. Hate going to the store or mall? Well now you can pretty much do all your shopping from your couch & have it delivered to your front door.

Socializing & meeting people. Back in the day, if you were homebound or an introvert or just didn't want to go out, you were alone aside from people who'd visit. Wanna talk to someone? Better hope they are at home when you call their landline. Now you can communicate with people all over the globe who share your interests with ease! Just hop into a forum or subreddit that is focused on your hobbies & start typing. Depressed but don't think your friends and family will understand? Reach out to someone online! They speak another language? No problem! Hit up Google translate! I lost all my friends due to my illness, but now via the internet, I have friends all over the world that I can talk to at any time!

If you guys don't think that shit is magic as hell and needs respect and maybe a ritual sacrifice in its holy name a couple times a year, you are WRONG.

But in all seriousness, being in the physical condition I am in, mostly homebound, having lost all my friends... if this had all happened in, say, 1995, my quality of life would be so so much worse. I would be entirely alone & completely depressed. Because I happened to be ill at this point in history, I have a comparatively amazing quality of life.

I think too often we take the luxuries that the internet provides for granted. Take a second to consider how much more life would suck or even just how much more inconvenient your life would be without it & be thankful you do.

Shona is in her mid 30's and is one of the Brits (a collective term we use for any and all of those with accents from England and Scotland because we do not know enough to figure out more than that).  She's also been one of our designated drivers.  She describes herself as a bitch by choice and says that if we knew and had seen all that she knew and had seen we'd understand why.  She's abrupt and not good with people.  Those from the Shadowlands call Shona and her two sisters "demon-born", although no one has clearly explained why.  I do know that Shona is a light skinned black with stormy grey eyes.  As in, you can actually see the storm clouds moving in her eyes.  It's rather disorienting if you aren't expecting it.

Shannon is the middle sister.  She's in her mid 20's.  She was the first of the Brits we ever met.  She's rather self-conscious about her heavy accent, as she knows that those who know us don't expect it, and tends to stay quiet or say as little as possible when she is around.  She's not as tall as Shona and her eyes are midnight blue rather than stormy grey.  You can see stars in her eyes the same way you can see storm clouds in Shona's.

Shawna is the youngest of the three sisters.  She's only about 15.  She found out that she likes astronomy and really likes star gazing.  Her eyes are a dark forest green and sometimes you can see leaves waving in the wind in her eyes.  These three sisters are the only ones we know of who have the strange eyes that they do.  Shawna has been spending a lot of time in the Mountain Caves healing from a rather traumatic event she suffered at the hands of the Shadow Sisters.

Rowan is in her mid 20s and is the Brit that is around the most regularly. She's the only one who is NOT self-conscious about her accent and has different stories to tell people when they ask her where she's from.  Of all of us, Rowan tends to get exhausted if she fronts for too long without a break, and she tends to feel more when she's in the body.  Pain is felt stronger, cold is felt stronger, just about all physical sensations are stronger.  She used to get easily overwhelmed by the sensory overload, but she deals better with it now.  These days she mostly helps Raylene with the shadow kids in her care.  Rowan looks much like the body with shoulder-length hair and lighter eyes.

We call Julia and Justin "the cockneys" because of their accent.  There is a marked difference between their accent and the other Brits.  They are brother and sister and are both in their mid 20s.  They seem fairly cheerful whenever they are around and have a decent ability to laugh at themselves.

There is a young man somewhere in his late teens to early 20s whom we call the Aussie.  He hasn't ever actually fronted, and we've mostly only heard him, not seen him.  We aren't sure that he's entirely aware of the rest of us.  But we know he has a distinct Aussie accent.

Stephanie Leigh (aka Steph) is 19.  She is very pragmatic and doesn't feel much.  She reminds one very much of Seven of Nine from Star Trek : Voyager.  She's analytical and precise and eschews excessive shows of emotion.

hiddenstar is 17 and one of our devout Christians but certainly not typical of the faith in our experience.  She has a sweet spirit and believes that if God wants to get your attention, He can do it better than she can.  She's very accepting of people, very open and easy to trust.  She has a lot of compassion.

There is at least one other unknown female in her mid to late teens who is also Christian. Every now and then the sound of her prayers reaches those of us fronting.  It is oddly comforting, under the circumstances.

Victoria Green (aka Vicki) is pretty much the body age. Strangely enough, she is also main Renee's twin.  If we have it right, Vicki came into being at the same time that main Renee did.  However, Vicki was not subjected to any abuse.  She takes her name from a pen name we came up with in fifth grade.  She used to be front a lot, but now she spends most of her time looking after the kids in the Castle.

Alexis is in her mid to late 30s and is a very maternal presence.  She is calm, with a cool head and a way with comforting people.  She's very good with the children, who usually will trust her before they trust anyone else.  She reminds us of how we think a mother ought to be.  She also doesn't front much, staying mostly in the Castle.

Stephen is in his late 20s or early 30s.  He is Steph's brother and is gay.  He is the third adult who takes care of the children in the Castle.  He's very good with kids and he has a comforting presence.

There is an unknown male is in his late 70s to early 80s.  He's an elderly black man and we've actually only seen him once. He's clean shaven and wears a cap and has a cane.  He gives good advice when he chooses to speak.  He reminds us much of our great grand-pa.

the “Princess” is the Mistress's twin sister.  She stays to herself, mostly living in the past.  She can sometimes be seen watching the Meadow and staring off towards Equine Valley from the Cliff Cavern where she lives.

Melodie is 19 and is from the Mountain Caves.  She is a healer and a calm, stabilizing presence.  In the past, just her presence was enough to help main Renee find some balance.  She has absolutely no self-preservation instinct. Someone has to be with her when she heals so that she does not drain herself completely.

Challeigh is 17.  She is also from the Mountain Caves.  She is psychotic.  She sees spiders everywhere.  Big, huge, furry spiders.  It doesn't seem to bother her.  She is pretty much used to it, but when she is near the front it is disconcerting for whoever is in the Front Room.  Those around her pick up on her hallucinations of spiders.  She is quiet and dreamy and vague.

“the assistant” is another one whose age is unknown.  She, too, comes from the Mountain Caves.  We don't know much about her except that she has, in the past, explained things about the Mountain Caves and those who live there.

zombie is a neuter.  For ease we refer to zombie as "her" even though that is not accurate.  She does not feel emotions at all and does not have a sense of self.  When referring to herself she usually says "this one".  She's a lot of help when the emotions are so bad we can't function.  She can front without being touched by it.  Emotions puzzle her.  She doesn't understand them, can't seem to make sense of them. 

Observer (f) is so named because she spends most of her time observing what is going on around us.  She is 19.

The Recorder is Observer's sister, but we're not sure.  We think she's in her late 20's to early 30's.  Mostly she tends to take things down for the collective memory.  We think she also helps to keep up with our internal "mapsco" of the city and surrounding areas where we live.  She doesn't front, she stays in the background, and she doesn't spend a lot of time interacting with anyone except Observer.

Seamus is in his mid to late 20’s.  He's also Irish.  The first few times he fronted were odd for everyone.  He has a very heavy accent.  He's usually good at keeping the body safe and the system as a whole safe.  He makes sure, if a system-mate has wandered off and gets lost, that we are able to get back to wherever it is that we are supposed to be. What I would like to compare for this week is Mapsco and the usage of Google Maps (app). For all of those that do not know what Mapscos are they used to be the huge spiral type of notebook that included maps of roads and main intersections of a city.  Since my dad is a self-contractor, he would have to drive around DFW and use Mapsco to reach address destinations for his clients. Mapsco was a semi-challenging thing to use. This atlas would take you on a mini journey to find your answer. To give you a quick explanation, It has charts and tables that are used as a key. You would have to follow certain information depending on the data the charts and tables gave you. You would target your main intersections and in comparison to google maps online it would not show you a visible image of the “you have arrived” location. If you were between the streets of the graphs that Mapsco illustrated then you are in the correct area.

As a child my father would expect is to search for addresses and this is how I came across my experience with this resource. Nowadays, we have Google maps. Within a click of a button, we can simply copy and paste a whole address and insert it in the search engine bar. Then we select GO and the navigation does the rest. Which is a lot simpler, but if you really think about it, we go through the motions and do not really use our minds to pay attention to detail. For example,  viewing what streets you pass or what stores are close by the location you are trying to reach. With Mapsco, you would try your best to retain all the information from the book. if by any chance you happened to not carry the book with you, you will more than likely get lost. My dad had to memorize a lot of areas in DFW because of it. It would help him give others directions and make things sometimes go by quicker(he would even draw little maps on receipts). Even though GPS is a lifesaver (because my life depends on it, if not I would be so lost). I think it is pretty interesting to truly see what you can get out of an experience like navigating without GPS. You'd be surprised at all the things you will learn and encounter in your neighborhood and surrounding areas.

Select the “CD Music” option under music setup. Then, type “~[track number 00-99]” to play the corresponding track number from the Hexen CD or any audio CD.

Level Select
