something that comes up for me over and over is a deep frustration with academics who write about and study craft but have little hands-on experience with working with that craft, because it leads to them making mistakes in their analysis and even labelling of objects and techniques incorrectly. i see this from something as simple as textiles on display in museums being labelled with techniques that are very obviously wrong (claiming something is knit when it's clearly crochet, woven when that technique could only be done as embroidery applied to cloth off-loom) to articles and books written about the history of various aspects of textiles making considerable errors when trying to describe basic aspects of textile craft-knowledge (ex. a book i read recently that tried to say that dyeing cotton is far easier than dyeing wool because cotton takes colour more easily than wool, and used that as part of an argument as to why cotton became so prominent in the industrial revolution, which is so blatantly incorrect to any dyer that it seriously harms the argument being made even if the overall point is ultimately correct)

the thing is that craft is a language, an embodied knowledge that crosses the boundaries of spoken communication into a physical understanding. craft has theory, but it is not theoretical: there is a necessary physicality to our work, to our knowledge, that cannot be substituted. two artisans who share a craft share a language, even if that language is not verbal. when you understand how a material functions and behaves without deliberate thought, when the material knowledge becomes instinct, when your hands know these things just as well if not better than your conscious mind does, new avenues of communication are opened. an embodied knowledge of a craft is its own language that is able to be communicated across time, and one easily misunderstood by those without that fluency. an academic whose knowledge is entirely theoretical may look at a piece of metalwork from the 3rd century and struggle to understand the function or intent of it, but if you were to show the same piece to a living blacksmith they would likely be able to tell you with startling accuracy what their ancient colleague was trying to do.

a more elaborate example: when i was in residence at a dye studio on bali, the dyer who mentored me showed me a bowl of shimmering grey mud, and explained in bahasa that they harvest the mud several feet under the roots of certain species of mangroves. once the mud is cleaned and strained, it's mixed with bran water and left to ferment for weeks to months.  he noted that the mud cannot be used until the fermentation process has left a glittering sheen to its surface. when layered over a fermented dye containing the flowers from a tree, the cloth turns grey, and repeated dippings in the flower-liquid and mud vats deepen this colour until it's a warm black. 

he didn't explain why this works, and he did not have to. his methods are different from mine, but the same chemical processes are occurring. tannins always turn grey when they interact with iron and they don't react to other additives the same way, so tannins (polyphenols) and iron must be fundamental parts of this process. many types of earthen clay contain a type of bacteria that creates biogenic iron as a byproduct, and mixing bran water with this mud would give the bacteria sugars to feast upon, multiplying, and producing more of this biogenic iron. when the iron content is high enough that the mud shimmers, applying this fermented mixture to cloth soaked in tannins would cause the iron to react with the tannin and finally, miraculously: a deep, living grey-black cloth.

in my dye studio i have dissolved iron sulphide ii in boiling water and submerged cloth soaked in tannin extract in this iron water, and watched it emerge, chemically altered, now deep and living grey-black just like the cloth my mentor on bali dyed. when i watched him dip cloth in this brown bath of fermented flower-water, and then into the shimmering mud and witness the cloth emerge this same shade of grey, i understand exactly what he was doing and why. embodied craft knowledge is its own language, and if you're going to dedicate your life to writing about a craft it would be of great benefit to actually "speak" that language, or you're likely to make serious errors.

the arrogance is not that different from a historian or anthropologist who tries to study a culture or people without understanding their written or spoken tongue, and then makes mistakes in their analysis because they are fundamentally disconnected from the way the people they are talking about communicate. the voyeuristic academic desire to observe and analyse the world at a distance, without participating in it. how often academics will write about social movements, political theory and philosophy and never actually get involved in any of these movements while they're happening. my issue with the way they interact with craft is less serious than the others i mentioned, but one that constantly bothers me when coming into contact with the divide between "those who make a living writing about a subject" and "those who make a living doing that subject"

"Satoru Gojo, are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“(Name), you know I don’t have anywhere else to go.”

“You could’ve literally knocked on any door but mine”

He chuckles slightly, moving into the room, “Yeah, but I know even if you don’t want me here you’ll still let me in and patch me up.”

You make a serious face at him, almost threatening, wishing he would return to his own room, or anywhere but yours, as he journeys to the bathroom. 

“Gojo, I’m meant to be getting my precious beauty sleep, and you’re disturbing it. You’re gonna owe me for this”

“Nah, I don’t think I will, you’ll forgive me once you’re done” He states with a cocky grin on his face.

You roll your eyes and let him lead you into the bathroom. He instantly slouches against the counter as you begin to pull the first aid kit out from under the sink, reliving the situation that has occurred many times before. He begins to unravel his bandages, revealing a large amount of cuts around his eyes and nose. Not to mention the large one you had spotted on his abdomen as he deliriously stumbled into your room. You take a moment to admire Gojo in this state, not many being able to see him like this, so serene, so - vulnerable. 

“Will you quit staring at me? Might start believing you’re in love with me or something.”

You scoff and pull him by the arm towards the toilet seat and gently push him to sit, making sure you have the height to reach his wounds. 

“This might sting, you know?” You anxiously say, leaning towards his face with the cotton in one hand, alcohol in the other. 

“As if, you should see the other guy anyway..” He says, chuckling to himself. 

You shake your head and begin to dab his cuts with the cotton, him only slightly wincing at the pain. It takes you a while to tend to all of the wounds on his face, and then ask him if there’s anything else. He glances down towards his ribs and you instantly get the message.

“Lift up your shirt Gojo” 

“Woah, at least take me to dinner first (Name)” he says with a smirk curling on his face.

“You knew this would happen as soon as you stepped your ass into that mission didn’t you, Satoru?” you tut, “Always got some sort of motive, I should have known” 

He shakes his head in disbelief but begins to drag his shirt up his torso, exposing the horrible bruising you can already see starting to bloom over his skin. You shudder at the sight, realising you might not be able to do anything except ice it. 

“Ok Gojo, cmon, we’re going back to the living room. You need some ice on this bruise or we won’t see any improvements” He begins to rise off of the toilet seat as you say this, him flipping the situation so that he towers over you. 

He slings his tall body through the door frame and into your living room, flopping down on the sofa, and then realising his mistake when he makes a soft grunting noise, accidentally jolting his ribs. You grab the bag of peas out of the freezer, seeing it as your only substitute for the lack of ice pack and walk towards Gojo. You sit down next to him and slowly bring his shirt up to where it was before, and lay the peas against his bruise. He flinches as the cold hits his inflamed skin, but begins to relax as he feels relief seep into his skin.

“Y’know for the title world’s strongest, you really are a big baby”

“Shut the fuck up (Name), you know I’m sensitive to the cold”

You chuckle at him and continue to soothe his tender skin, but you can feel his gaze roaming over you. You tentatively glance up and his eyes instantly lock on yours. You don’t know quite how long the eye contact lasts, but it begins to set your skin alight. You feel your cheeks flush, whilst Gojo continues to stare unwavering. 

“Gojo, what?”

It takes a while for him to finally reply, but when he does, the words were something you could have never expected.

“Can I not admire a pretty girl while she tends to me?”

While he looks so unbothered, your heart pounds rapidly, the warmth from your palm in stark contrast to the freezing peas you keep holding against Satoru’s skin.

“What?”

“I said,” He moves closer towards you, your push against his skin loosening, “Can I not admire a pretty girl while she tends to me?”

He grabs the wrist of your hand that holds the peas and moves them from in between you both, placing them on the floor, all whilst holding the same intense eye contact that sparks a feeling in your gut. He leans closer still with a strong hold on your wrist moving his arm along the inside of yours.

“Satoru,” you whisper “What are you doing..”

“Just let me try something”

As he finishes his sentence, you feel his breath ghost over your lips, before they lock onto yours, and he moves his hand towards the back of your neck to pull you in deeper. Your head is reeling as you come to your senses and give Gojo just as much as he is putting into this kiss. Your lips languidly move together, a sense of relief flooding your body as you feel it take a weight off your shoulders, but at the same time all you want is more. Satoru finally pulls back for air, as you try to chase his lips.

“Woah woah, slow down sweetheart, we haven’t even got started yet”

as promised, today I'm posting some of the theories related to skz lore

another achtung, this is my opinion and just assumptions based on information from different sources :з

and sorry for the mistakes <3

At the moment this is the last part of my thoughts about the new trailer. Well, at least those that I was able to put together into something unified and understandable. This time, finally, let's talk about the lore of the skz, about their "personalities" and what I suppose all this could mean for the continuation of the story.

So, we have already discussed what is shown in individual scenes and talked about references to albums. And, again, despite the fact that I have determined each of them as specific album, I cannot deny references to their other clips and comebacks. I also noted them in the first post with theories. But what does this mean for the history of the skz? There have been suggestions that this is a restart of their universe. I saw an interesting theory that this comeback is for fixing of past mistakes. And you know, these theories are INCREDIBLY interesting. Anyways I really think that this is still not a restart, but a continuation of the story.

So, what is the essence of the story, and what exactly are we continuing. Probably, you all have different knowledge of the lore of the band, as, in fact, I do, because for the most part these are all theories that have not been officially confirmed. Of course, we have all sorts of trailers like exclusive jype videos (well, like a prequel, etc.) and making film videos, thanks to which, thank God, we can find out at least some details. (As an example, a movie club drama, if there weren't making film, we wouldn't know that Seungmin and Jeongin had a fight, and Han was the cause of the accident with Lee Know, but we got distracted), but still most of the story remains for self-understending.

Crawling through YouTube, tumbler and tweeter, I came across a theory about time substitution (I didn't remember the word to describe it, if there is someone who can let me know, I will be glad ~). The theory was that the events shown in Maxident occur before the events shown in Oddinary. At the end of the Maxident, we see a kind of crime scene in which there are references to the scenes of the boys in the trailer. However, only to six. Who do you think is missing? Exactly, Felix and Jeongin.

To begin with, there are few arguments in favor of the fact that these two eras took place in the same universe.

Changbin's hand, in Oddinary he was the one who held a sign with the inscription "Free Hugs".

Of course, EVERYONE was talking about Hyunjin's apple (and if not, then yes).

Minho plays with a car toy and knocks down tin cans, the same he hits with a golf stick in Oddinary, almost blowing off the head of Lix.

Seungmin takes pictures with a bear in Maxident, in Oddinary he is a photographer, hands Felix a cake with his child's photo (children love soft toys and ride bicycles).

In the trailer itself there are spoilers to the Maxident: the time on the electronic clock is 14:03, on the mechanical 10:07 (the release date of the case).

But if we return to the theory that these events occur after, then this is not a spoiler, but a flashback or a hint. Something happened in Maxident that caused the skz to be replaced by their "evil" copies or personalities. (Honestly, there are so many different opinions about clones, but let's be honest, the only escaped clone we've seen is Jeongin. Yes, there were others in the Astronaut, but they remained in that world and did not even react to Hyunjin who came to them. In addition, I am more inclined to believe that these were not clones at all, but still their personalities from another world. And the only clone is, again, Iennie, who appeared back in the era of I am not music in the trailer). Let's return to the substitution for "evil" personalities. Do you remember "Felix never bad"? He is the only one who was not affected by what happened in Maxident (and even if we do not know what is this, it could be some kind of consequences of the battle with the Sound Monster from Noeasy. By the way, who was this monster? What if Lix from another universe, because the force with which "our" Felix repelled the attack is extremely similar to the attack itself... That could explain, why it didn't work on him). A little adjustment, the only one of the "real" skz. The second, whose traces are not at the crime scene, is Jeongin, the presumable culprit of what happened to the boys.

In Oddinary's trailers, we see Felix walking around looking for his friends.

He holds the lock in his hands all the time and constantly opens and closes it. It seems to me that the lock symbolizes their's era of that time. Before that, they had "Cle" = keys, finished it and got into a new world, they opened all the locks, each with their own key (there was also a long way, loss of keys, etc. but in the end, probably, they were all found and found their locks). And this gesture of opening and closing is a kind of sign that Felix no longer knows in which world he should look for friends. In the present, they are missing, and perhaps he is talking about going back and looking for them there. But, fortunately or unfortunately, he finds Oddinary, in which he meets the "evil" entities of his friends. Here we return again to the importance of color theory in lore. In Thunderous, we were shown that evil is red, and good (aka skz) is blue. And if you look, you will notice that Felix in Oddinary is represented in blue tones, while the rest of the guys are in red, which indicates their evil nature now. And, again, everyone except Jeongin. He is in the trailer in blue tones, the scene turns red when he enters the "territory" of Seungmin. It turns out that he did not change his character, he is "himself". Or rather, his probably evil copy initially. The others have lost their memories of their real selves, but not Jeongin, because he is already an "evil double", so his colors are different from the others.

At the end of the trailer, Hyunjin pushes Felix and he joins the "evil" personalities, becoming the same. In the new trailer for "5 star", he is the most inadequate, crazy Joker, "conductor", because he directs the group in the right direction (is it really right? quite possibly).

At the end of Oddinary's trailer, the lock, which I assume is a way of moving through the worlds, breaks, which entails the destruction of the boundary between the worlds. Therefore, in the new trailer, all past comebacks are represented by references, so the personalities of romantics and villains are mixed, which is why it is so chaotic and ambiguous. The worlds that were previously beyond a clear boundary are now mixed up, mixing the personalities of the boys. At the end of the 5-star trailer, they walk along the side of the building, buildings located perpendicular to the screen are visible in the distance. Either this is a new world formed because of everything that happened, or it is a "chaos" born because of the erased boundary between the former "lower" and "upper" worlds. And, perhaps, they will in some sense encounter their other personalities.

Thus, in a sense, they now really have the opportunity to "fix" those mistakes that they made on the way. Perhaps this is what Felix wanted, if it really happens in the end? And maybe they'll finally find the real I.N and bring him back to the family? BANG CHAN YOU'VE LOST YOUR BABY HELLO!

Written Interview about Esports Coaching

What qualities and skills do you think are most important for an esports coach to possess?

The most important skill to have as a coach comes down to one thing: are you willing to improve. How else are your players supposed to learn what it means to evolve and change their gameplay if you yourself won’t budge on your methods. Understand and learn more about the game, think critically about the interactions you have with players, and truly consider whether or not they learned what you are attempting to teach. If the answer is no, you will  have to swallow your pride and figure out why, or else your efforts will continue to fail. It’s also important to strive for novelty when inside a system of coaching, whether it be unique methods of conveying information, or a new strategy to employ for the team. Putting yourself in uncomfortable and new territory is always a good thing and should be something that is actively understood to be exactly what breeds genius, especially in a brand new and burgeoning field of competition. No one has all the answers yet. On top of this, it is really important for a coach to have good relationships with the players. If they don’t respect you as a person of character or as a person they simply want to be around, they will fail to learn a lot of key crucial skills. Someone who sets an example by action will be impossible to ignore and leads to explosive results.

How has the role of the esports coach evolved over time?

While this is not my particular area of expertise, I would imagine that esports coaching started early on through player lead coaching of their own gameplay. Through time and practice, certain individuals likely began to stand out in their ability to analyze and think critically of gameplay. One thing to note is that in my experience, lots of players will actually substitute thinking about their gameplay at all with a coach, thus off-loading all of the work they could be doing. If this isn’t recognized then it can lead to a lack of agency by the players to actually understand anything and it will take forever for improvement to occur. The role of esports coach tends to not be as involved as it should be in terms of personal relationships, but a shift in that direction is possible in the future.

Can you discuss your experience coaching esports teams, and how you approach coaching different types of players?

My direct experience of coaching starts as of about 8 months ago when I started coaching for the local NWFSC Raider Esports team. That being said, I had coincidentally spent the past 5-6 months considering my path as a player at a somewhat high level of competition and realized a lot of my shortcomings as a player. This is turn led to many conversations with friends about the process of improvement and what it means to genuinely sit down and put full focus into gameplay and attempt to correct mistakes as actively as possible. As for coaching of different types of players, the first thing to realize is that every single player is going to be different and their own “case file” of sorts. The most important thing you can do for any one person’s improvement is have a genuine relationship with them as a person, and allow them to share some of their deepest fears and concerns about themself and life. If you can be fluid in these conversations, it will open up a huge pathway of understanding what drives a person not just in success but in their failures. This way you can tailor what you say to be uniquely impactful to them as an individual. That being said of course, there are certain stereotypes and archetypes that come up over time but no matter what its important to realize you simply do not know everything about your players, and there is always more to consider and learn. As a coach in a “serious” environment, your job is 40% game, and 60% interpersonal.

What are some common challenges that esports coaches face, and how do you overcome them?

One of the largest issues I struggle with is complacency, but that comes with a direct knowledge that I simply can not justify spending ALL my time doing it. When the efforts are not paid, it means your full attention can not be given to the team and thus stagnation will be inevitable in some sense. Another view of this issue comes from an incorrect assumption that this is the only deciding factor on if one should give as much effort as they can. Even despite this fact, many will use it as an excuse to not do as much as they know they still can, even if not paid. If you coach and genuinely want to be good at what you do, its not even just about quantity, but quality of coaching. More focused and directed improvement will always output more, even if you can’t put your whole livelihood in. Another challenge stems from the fact that many people in the industry earned their way without “proper education”. While this has advantages in that the coaches tend to be self sufficient, it can lead to unprofessional behavior, or common mistakes that coaching theory has long since identified and put an end to, especially if the issues are deep and personal.

What are the most important things for a coach to keep in mind when developing strategies for their team?

The most important thing to keep in mind is A: The strengths of your players and what they enjoy putting time and effort into (or how to entice your players into trying more) and B: What you know you can teach well as a coach. It’s good to start on the right foot and reach a stride as soon as possible that works for everyone so that the process can be perfected. Then, later, you should be able to challenge yourself as a team and as a coach to come up with ways to make everyone more versatile and capable across a wider spectrum of strategies that can be molded and adapted. The reality will set in that you can apply these seemingly separate strategies in other situations that represent microcosms of those ideas.

Can you describe a particularly successful coaching moment or experience that you've had in esports?

Probably the most “successful” moment I had was in the environment I was able to set for the team in terms of expectations and relationships the players have with each other. I was able to establish from the very beginning that the most important goal for all of us is improvement. That is the magic word that we will all surround every issue we encounter. On top of that, there was a dedication to enjoyment of the process itself which helped with long term burnout and motivation and allowed the players to aid each other in that process as well.

How do you manage conflicts within the team, and what methods do you use to resolve them?

Because of the established relationship to improvement as a central tenet, it was possible to leverage that shared value in every tense situation that came up. Suddenly there's a shift in perspective that an issue being experienced is not one vs another, but us against the problem. While the knowledge of the importance of said perspective is helpful, it can not be overstated how crucial it is to remain eternally vigilant as a coach in moments that require it. If no one else is being logical and understanding of the emotions, the responsibility falls upon you or else everything has the potential to break down and destroy people’s mental. You as a coach have to live the idea of improvement and understanding in every aspect of your life, or else you will not have the courage to be decisive in the moments that really require it.

What are the most important metrics or indicators of success for an esports coach?

How much do your players practice and improve on their own? Can they ask each other for help when they need it? Do your vods reviews feel more conversational? Or are they simply attempting to “memorize” the information they are passively engaging with.  Players should be able to think for themself, and you as a coach should be primarily focusing on fostering that personal sovereignty. When they come to you, it should be specific questions they have come to a realization on their own about. Questions that you can finally use your knowledge of them as a player and a person to answer in a way that engages with their optimal zone of development. All of this is to say that improvement is the best indicator of success. That being said, success is a byproduct of improvement. Many many people and players will strive for the success itself and forget the intricate and delicate process that underlies true personal growth.

How do you work with other staff, such as analysts or sports psychologists, to support your team's success?

For the time being, I have not engaged with staff in this way yet. It has been a one man army for me and my team. That being said, I would make sure as best I could that an understanding was reached just the same as I have with my players. Really the only thing that would change would be the amount of work I could potentially offset to others, but I think as the lead role of coach, you should be able to do all of those tasks to some degree on your own (including playing the game itself)

How do you stay up to date with the latest developments and changes in the esports industry, and how do you adapt your coaching strategies accordingly?

Most people in the esports industry are incredibly secretive on practices and strategies of improvement. Currently, competition is viewed as a me first environment because no one wants to help someone else edge them out of winnings or a job. Short term it allows certain people to specialize and maintain their status but long term it hurts development as an industry and can even lead to potential abuse or misconduct or simply just mistakes as the process is hidden behind doors away from public scrutiny. In some sense this is okay and good as it allows mistakes to happen with comfort, but if there is something lacking in the understanding of what is truly important, you can get issues such as coaches saying “women players are distractions to my male players, thus they can’t be on the team” which is true only because they allow such a culture on their teams. For these reasons  I’m weary of following any steps laid out by professionals in the field for the time being and instead choose to follow my own intuition first and foremost. That being said, I still seek out what people are saying and attempt to use my intuition and logic actively to decide if certain information is useful to me and my situation. Ultimately that is the same process I teach to my players in their gameplay and it helps me stay vigilant and knowledgeable about the industry around me.
