saw your post about jpv in the tags and honestly. yeah the way bruce treats him makes me lose my mind. like DUDE. HELP HIM!!!

really i think why jpv doesn't go back to college and finish what he was doing is bc being batman long term during knightfall/knightquest/knightsend ruins his life (like, hallucinating st. dumas and his dead dad + calling himself nothing by the time bruce gets him out of the batsuit levels of life ruination) + he ends up homeless for an extended period of time.

i don't remember the issue off the top of my head, but i know there's a comic during dick's time as batman where some murder (or murders?? idk my memory's hazy lol) happens and he assumes it was azrael's doing because it's a similar M.O., and he visits him in the homeless shelter he's staying in, and jean-paul freaks out bc "you promised i'd be free" and that always made me sad when i think about it. :(

Honestly that makes a lot of sense why he doesn't go back to his old life.

Seriously in an earlier issue he was mentally so damaged, he didn't bother trying to escape a fire because he didn't think it was real :(( it was literally so sad seeing him just wrap himself with a blanket as the fire surrounded him and it just made me so much madder at Bruce bc he just didn't care about the bullshit he put Jean-Paul through. Like he knew JPV was mentally unstable and still gave him such a heavy burden because it's so obvious he saw JPV as more expendable than someone like Nightwing. Iirc his reasoning for not asking Dick, who was by far the best option for a replacement Batman, was how "Nightwing is his own person" like JPV wasnt???

Due to an overwhelming amount of support, we are excited to announce that '90s Batfamily week will be happening! All the information for the event can be found in this masterpost, so please read!

90s Batfamily week will be occurring from November 4th-10th, so mark your calendars!

The prompts will be the following: Monday, November 4th - No Man's Land // Found Family Tuesday, November 5th - Knightfall // Secrets Wednesday, November 6th - Batman the Animated Series // Undercover Mission Thursday, November 7th - The Long Halloween // Horror Movie

Purpose

We wanted to celebrate the exciting dynamic of the '90s batfam, and especially feature some characters who haven't been utilized in more modern batfam media. We hope to engage with a community of fans that are excited to create and pull from fun '90s tropes and media.

How it works

This is an opportunity for people who'd like to explore the '90s Batfam characters, dynamics, and relationships through a variety of prompts. Romantic ships are allowed, but please make sure the Batfam is the focus of your work. This fanweek will have a dedicated blog. These prompts are free for anyone to use. Because it is a non-traditional, non-monetized, and free-to-opt-in casual event, there will be limited mods, no advertising of paid services. I will open a collection on AO3 at the end of October for anyone who wants their work collected for this event.

This is a SFW (safe for work) event. As a loose rule, please keep your works PG-13. For those posting on tumblr, please follow the site’s guidelines. Please no batcest.

Learning About & Drawing Underrated Batfam Characters: Azrael!

to start this project off is azrael aka jean paul valley!!

i nicknamed him paulie because its cute and because i have a personal dislike of senior-junior names.

for paulie, i read [Batman: Sword of Azrael (1992)]! i am kind of shocked that more people don't like him, since i think he's very lovable. i think his background as just this loser nerd is very cute and i love him for it. the order of st dumas sucks in my opinion and i wanted to punch nomoz when he was being a little bitch to paulie. the azrael costume is AMAZING and i absolutely adore it, it is a visual delight, however it is also hell to draw lol. the fire swords are fucking badass and i love them.

overall, love paulie a lot and azrael is decently cool as a hero. i would love more recommendations for comics with him!!

I'm reading the OG run of Azrael (1995) by Denny O'Neil and honestly Batman/Bruce just irks me in a way I really didn't expect. I'm reading issue #36 and my biggest gripe is...why doesn't he teach him?Like legitimately why doesn't he teach him, or atleast send him to someone who could. That just feels so obvious to me.

It's obvious JPV is a danger to himself and others, and it's obvious Bruce's initial plan of just....giving him the mantal without any help and extremely minimal training wouldn't work but even if he says he doesn't blame JPV um????? You sure aren't acting like it???? Seriously that guy needs an ACTUAL therapist (and no, Brian doesn't count when he so obviously needs his own mental help). He is traumatized, extremely repressed, and is being actively manipulated by Lilhy and I'm just.....MAN.

People say Jason is his greatest mistake but honestly I think it might be tied with JPV at this point, bc unlike Jason (I may be wrong, haven't read Under the Red Hood yet), Bruce has so. many. chances. It's so obvious Jean-Paul looks up to him, he wants to do something good and I get he wasn't Bruce's responsibility, but I do think after Bruce took him into vigilanteism he has an obligation to help. He took those lessons to heart and made them vital parts of himself, that he had to help people and he had to go out in order to do that.

Like JPV had a life. He was getting a degree in computer science for christ's sake. Why didn't Bruce just...let him go back to that? (Tbf i may be misinformed on that last part , I did not read the Knightfall saga I listened to the radio drama instead when I found out there was one.) But seriously. He's rich. Just...get him a psychologist and leave him alone.
