a while ago on a post, someone reblogged my response to something they had asked, clarifying that they weren't a jean-paul valley hater, they actually liked him. and i didnt really know how to explain that yes i knew that immediately because nobody who knows he exists doesnt like him enough to comment on anything ever about it. the only people who care about him are people who like him.

'90s Batfamily Week Masterlist
Tumblr media
Due to an overwhelming amount of support, we are excited to announce that '90s Batfamily week will be happening! All the information for the event can be found in this masterpost, so please read!
90s Batfamily week will be occurring from November 4th-10th, so mark your calendars!
The prompts will be the following: Monday, November 4th - No Man's Land // Found Family Tuesday, November 5th - Knightfall // Secrets Wednesday, November 6th - Batman the Animated Series // Undercover Mission Thursday, November 7th - The Long Halloween // Horror Movie
Friday, November 8th - Contagion // Long Nights Saturday, November 9th - Prodigal // Western Sunday, November 10th - Teammates // Angst
Purpose
We wanted to celebrate the exciting dynamic of the '90s batfam, and especially feature some characters who haven't been utilized in more modern batfam media. We hope to engage with a community of fans that are excited to create and pull from fun '90s tropes and media.
How it works
This is an opportunity for people who'd like to explore the '90s Batfam characters, dynamics, and relationships through a variety of prompts. Romantic ships are allowed, but please make sure the Batfam is the focus of your work. This fanweek will have a dedicated blog. These prompts are free for anyone to use. Because it is a non-traditional, non-monetized, and free-to-opt-in casual event, there will be limited mods, no advertising of paid services. I will open a collection on AO3 at the end of October for anyone who wants their work collected for this event.
Rules
This is a SFW (safe for work) event. As a loose rule, please keep your works PG-13. For those posting on tumblr, please follow the site’s guidelines. Please no batcest.
What can I contribute?
Fanart (standalones, comic strips, etc.), fanfiction (one-shots, multichapter, etc.), fanmixes, gifsets, graphics— and more!
Some Final Thoughts:
If you engage with any of the fanworks, please reblog! Share the work with your followers. Support your fellow creators.
For this event, as you post your work, please use the following tag so we can repost your work on our blog!

The one-sided Dick/JPV beef is because in a different life, under different circumstances they could've been friends.
Azrael (and the distinction is important) betrayed them all, he tarnished the Batman mantle, almost killed the current Robin (Dick's legacy) and yet the part that stings most, is that Dick was right there and Bruce didn't pick him and this kicked off all of it. How much could have been prevented if Dick had been good enough to be considered (he was, he is, but he can only see his failures).
And Dick is so good at shifting blame and holding grudges and how could he blame Bruce for this, if Bruce didn't think he was worthy then that's it, it's his own fault. But there is someone he can shift the blame to, except he can't do that either, because it's not JPV's fault, it's Azrael and they are not the same.
It's messy and it's complicated and it creates a tension that there is no easy resolution to.

reading about azrael is so funny because till this day i still can't believe that inside of the bulky red man with a mysterious hood, fantastic cape, and a fucking flaming sword—is a loser with a blonde hair and silly glasses.

Jpv and Steph should have been able to meet, I don’t think it would’ve, like, saved either one of them but I do think it would have been super interesting and I’m very curious about how it would’ve gone.
How would Steph deal with encountering someone who is also strangely maligned by Bruce, but who Bruce can’t use a skills based excuse to dismiss? How would jpv deal with seeing the Batman who he looks up to with almost religious devotion treating stephanie brown the same way he treats Jean-Paul, when she hasnt been a threat or a ‘villian’ like he had been.
How about their relationships with Leslie and Cass? They both get caught in between Leslie and Bruce’s moral opposition, they both are a ‘first friend’ to Cass.
Despite their similarities a lot about these two actually contrasts each other.
The duality of a self made vigilante in every way vs a character fashioned into a tool, not just in the way of Cass of being taught and engrained with violence by a villian since childhood, but jpv who also had little to no control over his spiral once becoming Batman, and how the System fucked him over and made him Batman. Becoming a vigilante was not empowering like it was for Steph, it was essentially the removal of Jean-Paul’s agency. Steph who designed and built her original costume, who went out on her own, vs JPV who is handed down this Azrael costume, this heavy legacy, then who gets another costume designed again by someone else, a costume influenced by a villian while he trains in Gotham, and then again another hand-me-down costume when he becomes Batman. And of course, JPV alters and changes the Batman costume while he’s Batman, he and Steph are similar in that way, they both create with their own hands their own costumes, but the huge difference is Azrael again had little to no control over even that, he would blank out and the System would design, the System would build. Again, paralleled in how vigilantism controls them or allows them to control.
And then of course the Batman component.
Would Steph be uncomfortable seeing JPVs dedication to proving himself to Batman? Would something about it leave a bad taste in her mouth, embarrass her? Would she want to shake JPV and tell him he has no reason to be that pathetically attached? How about JPV? Steph is self made in a way Jean-Paul never had the chance to be, she has no ancestral title to live up to, none of that all consuming baggage that Azrael comes with, but she’s still similarly consumed with proving herself. Shouldn’t she be able to know better? Assert herself the way Azrael fails too?
Would they get along? Can’t honestly say I know. Maybe they would become pals, bond over their roles as peripheral Bats mistreated by Bruce. Or maybe their similarities would force them to recognize the unpleasantness within themselves that they see in the other, and they might become insecure and hateful, and they might turn on each other and hiss like cats faced with a mirror. What do I know.

hey. so sorry. i've been thinking about jpv and dick non stop for the last few days and im making it your problem.
they both want to be able to live up to bruce's expectations and ideals sooo badly. they both hate the idea that someone else could do it better than them. they don't know how to communicate. when they meet, it is under the absolute worst conditions possible.
bruce already handed off dick's legacy and changed it, and now he has done the same with the batman legacy? without asking him, again? dick has to find out from tim again that bruce has almost died?
jpv is trying to grapple with the fact that his father used him, his father brainwashed him all while trying to live up to another mans ideals.
as nightwing, batman is supposed to be an equal but jpv is anything but that. jpv is mocking dick's childhood, he is ruining bruce's legacy, ruining the only good he had in his life.
dick has lost starfire, he has lost his team, he has lost his faith in himself as a hero and now he is losing his childhood and it's all jpv's fault. (it's not even a little bit but im certainly not going to tell him that).
they should fuck. like, it should be mean, and nasty, and cruel, and there is no kindness there. there is no love or admiration.
one of them (dick) calls the other 'bruce' and things just go downhill from there. it's a fight for dominance the entire time. jpv is actually taking psychic damage from his catholic guilt about the whole thing. he can't stop thinking about how he is wasting time being involved in this cardinal sin. he's thinking about how he was able to deny himself of catwoman, why not of dick?
dick is choking jpv asking him "how he likes it? did he enjoy it when he choked robin"
