Bargniff
Art by Manthos Lappas
The "Bargniff" (Bargniff sng.) are a sentient species that inhabit swamps, marshes or places with a large amount of water in the Po Valley. This strange creature has the features of a huge toad over two meters in length, with its hind legs covered in hydrophobic fur and two large eyes that can make them glow and give off heat as if they were engulfed in flames. The "Bargniff" are nocturnal animals and feed mainly on fish and animals but in rare cases also on human beings who hunt patiently camouflaged under the water level of the canal, marsh or swamp as the only indication of its presence a gurgling. When his prey approaches they leap out to attack, but if the prey is a sentient being then the "Bargniff" will ask him a very complicated riddle or question, if the victim answers the question correctly then he is left free, and sometimes he is given advice or a gift, if instead he answers incorrectly the "Bargniff" attacks its prey by pulling it underwater, killing it, and then eating it. Obviously most of these creatures live in special reserves they create on purpose to preserve the magical species and therefore the attacks are extremely rare but some daredevils venture there, often even with a succulent gift, to ask for advice.
