John Anderon's tobacco shop nothing close to luxury, certainly not compared to the other many stores just like it in New York City, but it was frequented by Mannathan’s best writers, including the likes of Washington Irving and James Fennimore Cooper. They all gathered for one reason; Mary Cecilia Rogers, the beautiful cigar girl. The people were captivated by her beauty, and then by her shocking murder in 1841. Her untimely death would be immortalized by the master of mystery, Edgar Allen Poe, the in his story “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt”.
When she was seventeen years old Mary Rogers took up job at John Anderson’s tobacco shop, where she worked as a clerk. It was highly unusual for a woman to hold such a position at that time, but the teenagers had little to no choice. That year her father had been killed in a steam boat explosion, and while her mother, Phoebe, was able to scrape by with the boarding house she managed, it was necessary that Mary found work. The tobacco shop turned out to be the perfect place. Having a cigar girl alone was enough to draw a crowd. However, it was Mary’s beauty and charm that kept the crowds coming back. Men would visit just to share a short word with her, with some staying throughout all of the afternoon in the hopes of getting in one or two more. Mary became a bit of a local celebrity, and even had a poem dedicated to her in the New York Herald, written by one of her many admirers.
She moved amid the bland perfume
That breathes of heaven’s balmiest isle;
Her eyes had starlight’s azure gloom
And a glimpse of heaven–her smile - New York Herald, 1838
Mary was certainly a money maker, and for this Anderson paid her generously. There an influx of customers in October of 1838 when the New York Sun published an article claiming that Miss Mary Rogers had disappeared, leaving behind a suicide note for her mother. The mystery would be solved a few days later when Mary returned home, safe, after visiting a friend in Brooklyn. The Sun was notorious for publishing false stories for more sales, and people were quick to blame them for fabricating the story. Others theorized that it had been Anderson who put together the story, all to bring more publicity to his business. Whether or not this is true, it certainly worked. Sales at the Anderson’s tobacco shop sky rocketed upon the beautiful cigar girl’s return. Three years later Mary vanished again, but this time she would not be returning home.
On July 28th, 1841a group of men were walking alongside the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey when they spotted a corpse bobbing in the waters. They grabbed a row boat, and set out to retrieve the body. The victim was a young woman. Her dress and hat were torn, and her body had been battered. Dark finger marks were found around her neck, leaving the coroner to believe that the cause of death was strangulation. Word of the body spread, and a crowd began to form on the shores. A few hours later a young cork-cutter named Daniel Payne would identify the body. It was his fiancé, Mary Rogers.
It had been a few days since Payne had seen his beloved Mary. On July 25th she set out to see family in New Jersey. The visit was only meant to last a day. When Mary did not return the next day, neither her mother or fiancé gave it much thought. There had just been a big storm, and they believed Mary was just held up until conditions were well enough to travel. Somewhere within that three day time frame Mary had been killed and her body was dumped into the Hudson.
Police immediately began to suspect Daniel Pay. They found his activity to be peculiar. During the two to three days of Mary’s disappearance, Payne had relentlessly searched for his fiancé. Once the body was discovered, he quickly became disinterested and distanced himself from the investigation. The newspapers ran with this theory. Despite Payne having a solid alibi, journalists turned out vividly detailed stories, giving various, detailed accounts of how he may have killed the cigar girl. A popular variation of this theory as that Rogers had planned to break off their engagement, and an enraged Payne had strangled her and then dumped the body into the Hudson.
Although Daniel Pay was never charged with his fiancé’s murder, he remained as suspect to both the police and general public. Mary’s death, as well as the mounting pressure of being a suspect, weighed heavily on Pay. He began drinking heavily to help the days pass by. He also began to tell people he was being haunted by Mary’s ghost. On October 7th, Daniel Pay drank himself to death. He died in the same location where Mary was killed. In his possession was a short note. It read, “May God forgive me for my misspent life.”
Despite the mass popularity of her case, no one was ever arrested for Mary Rogers’ murder. To this day many still believe Daniel Pay was the killer, citing his final, written words as admission of guilt. Others believe Mary had been killed by a group of thugs who attempted to rob her while she traveled back home. One theory, which has been popularized by Edgar Allen Poe’s story, is that Mary was killed during a botched abortion, and the abortionist dumped her into the river to hide the evidence.
