Aesthetics of Funk - Crocheted mandalas by Xenobia Bailey
Xenobia Bailey is a trash alchemist, a single stitch, urban crochet aficionado, designer, artist and community activist, whose practice industrializes the visual aesthetic of “Cosmic-Funk,” practiced by African-American homemakers since Emancipation, into utilitarian “Funktional” design. Media exposure ranges from an Absolut advertisement to a design consultancy with Disney World, and a subway mosaic commission from the MTA in New York. She has shown internationally, with such institutions as Creative Time, the Sharjah Art Foundation, and numerous U.S. Embassies. Her work is held by numerous museums, as well as in academic, corporate, public and private collections.

Cast on the most boring shawl project I've ever willingly put on the needles twice. The first one turned out so pretty I couldn't resist a larger version. (Ravelry Pattern)
The Original was knit pre this tumblr blog with two different flavours of the 150gram Lion Brand Mandala yarn, the lighter colour being a pastel rainbow and the darker colour was a saturated rainbow. This time I have two of the 300gram Mandala yarns, the lighter is Giant and the darker is Chimera.
I had to gut the Giant to get the colour order mostly similar, but other than that I'm not going to mess with it, if they get wildly off track of eachother I'll just live with it. Hoping since this is mostly mindless knitting (with the regular annoyance that is chevrons) I'll actually like. work on it.

I never posted my market bag pattern? Huh. The crochet bottom makes it extra sturdy, and you can tuck things into the handle like chapstick or rolled up cash 👍🏻

7 Crochet Doily Patterns
Crochet Snazz It Up With Doily Patterns Snazz It Up With Doilies Every now and then I like to question my ability to see, or as I fondly think if it strengthens my eyes by working with nice thin yarn. My usual go with the thin yarn is earrings but I have seen friends at the Stitch Social creating other patterns and thought it would be fun to branch out and try something new, after doing the last…

Finished this amazing pattern recently!!! I was lucky enough to take on a bunch of yarn from a friend and decided to make this as a thank you/birthday present!!
This was not only a beautiful finished piece but also a really fun pattern to make and I'm excited to eventually make another!!
I used a variety of different yarn types/weights and hooks sizes and I'm really proud of how this turned out in the end!
This is the lotus mandala duster pattern from morale fiber!!
It's free, you can also buy it on Etsy as well and it comes with more details and pictures.
They also have a YouTube series for this pattern!

Update: my doily sun hat actually shaded me from sunburn. 😁👍 I've been working with Hubs in the Alabama sun for loooong hours the last few days, and the hat (first one above - along with sunscreen) kept my face and neck shielded from burn. A miracle for my freckley self actually.
🧶crochet experiment: DOILY HAT 👒
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am very happy to share that this experiment actually worked! 😁🧶
This is something I had pondered for a while: could we 1) crochet a doily pattern to reach a hat circumference, 2) repeat the last crocheted round to form a band, and 3) continue the doily pattern for a brim?
Honestly, I am so accustomed to failed experiments that I was surprised by the outcome. 🤣 I cannot say it would work with all doily patterns, but it worked with these two:
The first hat (left above) was made using the Chunky Monkey Rug pattern at REDAGAPE Crochet:

I love how this dolly shade hat turned out! The pattern was well-written and a good candidate for an experienced beginner. My yarn and hook sizes had me working to round #5, repeating that five times more, and then working out to round #13.
🧶👒
The second hat was made using the Turbulence Mandala pattern at FROSTVIRKA:
Tumblr media
This hat turned out a smidge fancier - don't you agree? The pattern was well-written though somewhat abbreviated: the stitches are simple, but a little more experience is needed to assume the next steps. My yarn and hook sizes had me working to round #4, repeating that five times more, and then working out to round #12.
🧶👒
For both hats I used leftover radio wire from the pupper's invisible fence days to shape the rim. I referenced actual real-live hat patterns calling for jewelry wire and heavy fishing line, but neither of those worked as well as the coated radio wire. And everyone lived happily ever after. The End 🍃

Quick Little Tunisian Crochet Purse
I am so stupid proud of this bag. I needed something for my wallet and keys on shopping day, found this pattern, and whipped up something legit from stuff I had lying around. The yarn is Lion Brand mandala yarn in "chi" color way. I'm not psyched with the way mandala works up if you just feed it straight so I like treating them as a three color set and using the Tunisian simple stitch to blend them more subtly. Speaking of, I LOVE TUNISIAN CROCHET. Soft, supple, strong... and supposedly does not unravel when cut. Perfect for garments, blankets, and utility pieces. The button is black plastic, hand painted as a watermelon 🍉 because free Palestine forever, and a Halluci Nation patch is in the mail, winging its way toward me, to be sewn on the back.
I'm so proud because I whipped it up in five days and it's the most functional thing I've made in quite a while that cost me close to zero dollars.
e: it's??? ¿¿¿so fucking cute???

mein gott the fiber arts are completely slept on. a double coated dog and a bone needle are all you need to make something as useful as a bag. probably don't even need the needle, lol. a bunch of reeds are all that is needed to make a basket that can boil water over a fire. straw mats and fishing nets and hats and clothes made of fine bark or hand spun cotton, something from nothing with just your hands and the gifts of God's green earth. shivers.

Watched a youtube video from a year ago about crochet drama because someone who makes and sells mandala vests at music festivals was accusing someone of stealing her design because they also made a mandala vest and were putting a pattern up for sale.
And.
Like.
Look, if you don't crochet, just know that mandala vests are fucking everywhere all the time, and for anyone to claim that they have "the" design for the style is fucking bonkers.
It's a circle with some shit added on. It is a very basic wearable design that is popular because it's easy and looks pretty neat. Hell, Etsy has at least 5 pages of the fuckers.
They're not special, is what I'm saying. Although, if anyone's gonna get in a tizzy about claiming "their" mandala vest was copied, I would have guessed it'd be someone who sells at music festivals.
Girl, the people at the festival are buying from you, not looking for patterns. Sell your shit and calm down.
