Baduizm (1997), Mama’s Gun (2000), Worldwide Underground (2003), New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War (2008), New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh (2010), But You Caint Use My Phone (2015), Erykah Badu

One can all too easily be swayed by Baduizm’s titular pitch of a way of being, a belief system, a cult, even; Erykah Badu’s subdued R&B began as something of a micro take on the genre, a style both so evidently rooted in its soulful elders but so fresh that it has since seen countless imitators. Badu’s vision has been complete since that debut, occasionally deviating into cheeky self-reference, stripped-back basics, slick futurism, loose jam, quick-shifting plunderphonics. One imagines reverence of Badu – Baduizm, of the proper kind – will last longer and run deeper than devotion of so many of this era’s greatest artists.
