One can all too easily be swayed by Baduizm’s titular pitch of a way of being, a belief system, a cult, even; Erykah Badu’s subdued R&B began as something of a micro take on the genre, a style both so evidently rooted in its soulful elders but so fresh that it has since seen countless imitators. Badu’s vision has been complete since that debut, occasionally deviating into cheeky self-reference, stripped-back basics, slick futurism, loose jam, quick-shifting plunderphonics. One imagines reverence of Badu – Baduizm, of the proper kind – will last longer and run deeper than devotion of so many of this era’s greatest artists.

The Subways' eponymous album reminded me of many musicians who haven't released their albums in a while. No, they didn't retire, most of them still tour, yet they haven't gone to their studios. For instance, Erykah Badu didn't do an LP since New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). I know, she did a mixtape afterwards, yet even that one happened a long time ago. I ask myself why, because the LP showed us Mrs. Badu at another height of her powers. Yes, she remains one of the most intriguing forces in the modern R&B, but I fear the pressure may have gotten to her. Her discography remains an odyssey throughout the soundscape only the genre she works on is capable of. However, many in the idiom incorporated her innovations, so she would have to go beyond what she did before.
