Hello!

Is The Drakes Spoiled Brat set after the events of Mama Bird?

Like, uh..

Did Mama Bird come first, causing the Batfam to break apart and then the events of The Drakes Spoiled Brat happen so that doesn't happen again?

Hi!! While I get it can be confusing because of the fact they are put together in my Batfam series

BUT

The two fic's are completely unrelated- Mama bird is Bad dad (and really shitty person) Bruce with a much closer Batfam, ignoring a lot of canon.

Drakes Spoiled Brat is based more in canon (with a lot of fanon inspo) for the events leading up to the whole time hand wave bs. Which more stuff will be touched on later.

Haley Heynderickx — Seed of a Seed (Mama Bird)

Haley Heynderickx makes an urgent kind of folk, one propelled by angst and intelligence and sharp pulsing guitar lines. There is nothing hearts-and-flowers, for instance, about the opening cut “Gemini,” from the artist’s second full-length, Seed of a Seed. It simmers and rails, even in its quietest parts, an acoustic guitar ramping up aggressively under Heynderickx’s vibrato-trembling soprano. “There’s a woman in the corner claiming she is just a former one of me and I am her just out of context,” she intimates right off the bat. The song bubbles over with nervous energy and existential angst, not gentle, not especially pretty, but stirring and memorable. You can’t get it out of your head.

We last heard from Heynderickx in her 2018 debut, I Need to Start a Garden, a more conventionally strummy, floaty, female-dominated brand of folk. There were sharp edges from the beginning. Heynderickx’ tremulous, blues-inflected voice, recalling Karen Dalton in some spots and Josephine Foster in others, carries a great deal of emotion as it carves sharp turns and bends through the picking. Yet, it’s fair to say that cuts like “The Bug Collector” ran more placidly through their bucolic landscapes than Seed of a Seed’s tracks do. I like the edge to this one. It jolts you awake. It keeps you on your guard.

Consider, for instance, the title track, an easy-going ramble at its onset, tamping down the chords for a scratchy cadence. Heynderickx sings with a piercing clarity on this one, gliding through the high notes without a hitch or strain, her melody cushioned by swathes of bowed strings. And yet the song always seems ready to rear up and kick its hind legs at the break between verses. There’s a punk intensity to the way that even acoustic strumming punches through, a chaotic, overflowing well of feeling in the warmth of strings.

Heynderickx is quite a good guitar player, executing agile flourishes atop the steady rain of strumming. For “Sorry Fahey,” she brings the picking up front, at first just humming a hiccupy, tipsy melody, later letting it fly over long mournful blares of trombone. The horn player is Denzel Mendoza, who along with drummer Daniel Rossi and bassist Matthew Holmes makes up Heynderickx’s able but unshow-off-y band.

Seed of a Seed is a pretty record, and you can get lost in that but not for long. Heynderickx is always pulling you up short, interposing a clever line or a surprising sonic texture that upends expectations. A lot of folky, singer-songwriter records provide a bit of respite, but Seed of a Seed is too prickly and interesting for that.

Do you have any headcanons from your current fics (Mama Bird or Spoiled Brat) that you want to add into that fic but you can't figure out how to mention within a chapter? (without spoilers, of course)

YES! Also apologies for delayed awnsering I genuienly said to myself "God so many-" and didnt have the brainpower to sort through them all.

Heres a little list though (Some of these have been heavily implied but not yet/if at all driven into)

SB! Tim picked "Cardinal" both for the symbolism (devotion and tales of dead family members visiting via the bird) but also based on the Cardinal flower, native to NJ and one of Alfreds fav to grow.

MB! Barbara struggles with bounderies since she was constantly shown they could be broken at a moments notice "for teh greater good" or "for the job"

SB! Jason goes to college part time and is working towards an English PhD w/ a minor in Theater

SB! Cass accidently goes non verbal at times and prefers using sign language at times. BUT she does try to push herself to speak since its proof of how far shes come.

MB! Damian loves video games and begs Duke to take him to the store at least once a week (Duke likes the comic books)

SB! Dick learned to become an EMT after Jasons incident (its what helped him qualify as a firefighter EMT)

MB! Tim struggles with emotional outbursts where his emotions come out in "bursts" he learned to supress- until of course he reaches a point and needs to cool off lest he accidently snaps out.

MB! Duke doesnt always feel like part of the family and in turn pushing issues aside as "not his place" only further distancing himself (except for Damian, they are VERY close)

ALL of SB! Batfam have attended therapy, some just decided it didnt work for them or go more than others. Dick enjoys talk therapy, Jason and Damian prefer talking to the therapist to air their issues instead of addressing someone directly and Bruce enjoys it helps him see past his assumptions to other perspectives.

MB! Jason stress bakes. But he also just enjoys baking in general, its methodic and comforting to see the results of his work like that.

SB! Steph is a "regular" at like 30 different places for random reasons because she likes going to walk around to clear her head

These are just a few but I have TONS more- but ill be touching on a lot of them in future chapters!!

she is very tidy and is constantly making sure everyone is safe
