I don't know why anybody is surprised by Mitsuki's confession. He's spent the entire manga claiming Boruto is his sole purpose for existing and calling him the Sun to his Moon. He's said his goal is to spend the rest of his life by Boruto's side.

The anime even has Mitsuki tell his team not to assume someone's straight. (I don't remember the arc, just the line "He could also love a boy, you know.") The only way this boy could get more queer-coded would be if he started wearing a rainbow flag pin.

I just found out that Kishimoto came back as a writer for the Boruto manga from chapter 52 onwards, and now it immediately makes sense why the writing of the female characters has taken such a plunge since.

I thought this was weird, because the new writers had turned most of the female cast into such good and complex characters! Yeah, the ending of Naruto had left a lot of them in unfortunate positions - most of them giving up the ninja life to become good little housewives, for example - but the new writers did what they could with what they had, especially for the new generation.

But then suddenly, Sumire, who had always been portrayed as clever and competent, got talked down to really condescendingly by Amado, and kept acting very gullible and clueless during that whole conversation.

And then a new character was introduced - Eida - who has absurdly powerful abilities (implied to be one of the most powerful non-Otsutsuki characters we've ever seen in this world), but she allegedly doesn't fight at all. Instead, she wants her (male, of course) Knights in shining armor to protect her.

That, in and of itself, wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but then there's also her main character drive and motivation, which really just reeks of Kishimoto's usual sexism. But first, let's take a look at her abilities:

For one, she has pretty much perfect clairvoyance - she can see everything and anything that is happening anywhere in the world, and not just in the present. She can cast her gaze back in time (but no further than the date of her creation) and watch back anything that happened over the course of her lifetime, anywhere in the world, like a movie.

But she has a second ability, too. Everyone who sees her becomes immediately infatuated with her, and falls in love with her. The only exceptions to this rule are Otsutsuki and her own blood relatives.

However, because of this, she feels like she will never know "true" love. How can she know that someone's feelings for her are real, and not just a product of her ability? And here comes her driving motivation, and the reason why I don't like her at all:

She wants to make a boy fall in love with her. Specifically, a boy who is mostly Otsutsuki, so someone who won't be affected by her powers - in other words, either Kawaki or Boruto. She wants that "true" love. That's it. That's her whole character, and her goal. Someone that powerful, someone with that much potential, and she's running after boys she has an unrequited crush on.

And now that she's done exposition dumping, it's pretty much all she ever talks about anymore (unless she's used as a plot device to deliver important information to Code). Just as quickly as she appeared in the story, she has already been reduced to simping over Kawaki and Boruto instead of starting a character arc of her own. Sound familiar?

Yep. Same old, same old. Just like back in Naruto, an unhealthy obsession with a boy is once again this female character's only motivation to take part in the story.

I thought Eida was such a disappointing character once I learned what she was all about (or rather, how little she was all about) - I had come to expect so much more from Boruto's female cast, who had been mostly salvaged from Kishimoto's neglect at this point. And yet here we suddenly were, with a character who acted just as boy-crazy as the poor, terribly-written women of Naruto once did.

And then I found out that Kishimoto was the one who wrote her.

And suddenly, it all made sense. 🙄

I know Eida’s special abilities already make her overpowered, so the lack of direct combat power doesn’t actually make her weak, but I’m still salty they did that. If she was a male character, I bet they wouldn’t have. Not saying she would’ve also been a genius in combat if she’d been a guy, but they would’ve probably at least given him some average shinobi skills. And the stuff about not liking “barbaric acts” and pain probably wouldn’t have been mentioned, either.

i’m honestly more angry about the fact that y’all know that eida or aera or what the fuck ever her name is was made solely to be killed off. like, we get nothing of her motivations. nothing of how she met ardyn and somnus. nothing at all about her personality or anything else. nothing of who she was as a person. she’s about as three dimensional as a goddamn sheet of printer paper and you made her solely for the purpose of “ah yes, ardyn’s revenge needs a reason. why don’t we do THIS!” and expecting us to believe that it’s “GOOD WRITING”.

Description:  This western woman's face is deformed and paralyzed on one side. As such, she slurs her words together. She wears bulky black painted plate armor. Her chestnut hair is still thick. She is missing an eye and her face is severely sunburned. Her one remaining eye shines green.

Personality:  Aside from being a little slow due to sleep deprivation she is generally quite perceptive. She notices little details and can draw good conclusions from them. She is a bit of a xeno-phobe, disliking non-Elves.

History:  Born to a pair of adventurers, Rinn grew up listening to her mother's many stories. Through the years after Rinn was born, her mother became increasingly distant from her family, instead choosing to pursue power in the west. Rinn's mother didn't care for her much, and the feeling was mutual. She is searching for what she claims is her rightful reward.

Motivation:  She loathes her own lifestyle; and she feels kind of lost in life

Theodoric Riley (Ouside Tavern, Will follow inside)

Description:  This eastern man's face is handsome . He is well dressed, constantly wearing a black suit, white shirt, and black tie. He has golden hair. His eyes are amber.

Personality:  Always inclined to offer people food he seems plenty friendly. He has a habit of throwing himself into exceedingly dangerous situations.

History:  Theodoric lived on a farm with his father, near the main road leading to a nearby town. He became a Mason soon after.

Motivation:  Sabotage a competitor.

Eida Hogcollar

Description:  3'1" and muscular, this southern woman tends to wear a tan poncho over her likewise colored trousers and shirt. Her tied-back hair is black. She wears a mask on her face.

Personality:  She tends to agree with only herself unless someone else's opinion sounds like she can profit from it. She tries to control her temper but she can't always stop herself from what she feels what must be done.  She lacks restraint and is impulsive. She jumps in and acts without thinking all too often.

History:  Eida was born to in a poor docking district. She spent her early days working in the same smith shop her father was employed at, doing general labor. She took every job she could get her hands on, but the opportunities for Halflings in the south were limited. She eventually got the idea of being the protector of her homeland from reading books, and has made it her duty.

Motivation: She's repulsed by the PC; and to prove her worth to the world

Gwynnie Swiftwhistle

Description:  She is a pot bellied southern woman with a big hulking figure and broad shoulders. She likes to wear darkened spectacles and heavy clothing, no matter the weather. Her golden hair is styled in orderly dreadlocks. Her brown eyes have a joyful gleam in them most of the time.

Personality:  Her voice, at times compared to that of a Nymph, lambasts those who consider themselves "civilized" with snide, belittling remarks; the subtle growl she speaks with growing louder in doing so, one can find it most pronounced, despite the otherwise natural purity of her tone. The war was a terrible time for her, and Gynnie does not often speak of it. When she does, she does so with a strained expression and tears in her eyes.

History:  Born to a pair of adventurers, Gynnie grew up listening to her father's many stories. Her first spouse was a Glassblower, they had one son, but her spouse won total custody. Without her spouse to temper her she grew out of control. When her spouse passed she lost her only source of income but claims to her sons to still be retired.

Motivation:  She is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences her actions; and she is a bit of a kleptomaniac

Eida is not a “good strong female character”,she is just a Mary Sue with fanservice under male gaze!

Eida is just as obsessive as Sakura and hinata and Eida is also selfish in her “love” to Boruto and Kawaki: she does not actually give a fuck about neither, she is after the thrill of “real love” meaning she is a predator hunting Boruto and Kawaki down because they are partially Otsusuki and her manic psycho ability doesn’t work on them.

Eida’s ability is also nasty: shit straight out of porno.

Keep in mind that Eida is canonically only 16.
