The Sims 3 Save File Families Part 1/3
Let me introduce the present families in the save file I made for Sims 3. It's just a simple one. The eventual prolog to the actual canon of the game. You'll see familiar Sims and new Sims, of course. I just changed a few things around Sunset Valley, the rest remains the same. This is why I didn't take that long on it. (A hour per day maybe....)
Note: The description contains both family and character bio.

The Bachelor family (Bella and Michael Bachelor [Original & Younger version]) Simis and Jocasta Bachelor remain the same.
Bachelor family:
Sunset Valley is according to Simis the perfect place for both his children to grow up. It is clean, spacious and it has everything they need. The Bachelors have a huge respect for their neighbors, the Goth family.
Simis Bachelor: Simis is proud at his two kids. The rules he has set down for his kids has shown great results, mostly on his now oldest son Michael. Simis hopes, that his children grow up well and follow a successful path.
Jocasta Bachelor: As a sensitive, over-emotional woman Jocasta didn’t have it easy to go through. Not that she suffered any problems at work or school. It’s just the way she is. Befriending her current life partner Simis was the best thing happening to her, cause he saw in her more, than she thought about herself.
Michael Bachelor: The Bachelor’s first child, friendly, athletic, smart. Just the way Simis wants him to be. Michael is an ambitious boy and strives to become a good human being.
Bella Bachelor: Isabella was considered one of the most beautiful toddlers around Sunset Valley. It’s no surprise, everywhere she was taken to, people just couldn’t stop and admire her contagious smile.

The Goth family. (Mortimer Goth [Original & Younger version]) Gunther, Lolita and Cornelia Goth remain the same)
Goth family:
50 years ago, Victor and Gretle Goth founded a small village named Sunset Valley. Partnered with the Landgraabs, it grew into a lovely town now with several news faces coming from near and far. Gunther watched all the changes and as the succesor believes the townfolk will live a quiet and peaceful life.
Gunther Goth: Gunther is the son of the founders of Sunset Valley. He inherited from his family the Goth manor as well and just as his parents, he wants for the townies the same as the past Goths have promised.
Cornelia Goth: Upon having Lolita and Mortimer, Cornelia quit her job and focused on raising them, while Gunther and the Landgraabs would look out for their business.
Lolita Goth: In her free-time Lolita likes to read countless books. Her favorite book is Murder in Pleasantview, which funnily cointains strange coincidences she heard from the real world. Her younger brother, Mortimer is Lolita’s everything and she enjoys to play with him as well. In some occasions, she reads the toddler children stories, borrowed from the library.
Mortimer Goth: Lolita’s precious, little boy.
Langraab family:
The name "Landgraab" is known by many people due to its popularity and immense wealth earned over the century. Nancy's parents helped build up the current existing houses and community lots, that are seen around. The family is used to living their life on the fast line, believing to be the townfolk's best shot. Curiously across the Landgraab Manor, there's a building under construction, which most of the townies assumed to be the work of the Landgraabs, but apparently, the original creators are absent from town. Who could they be?
Nancy Landgraab: Nancy is focusing on outlining the future of her son Malcolm to someday take the lead of the Landgraab business.
Geoffrey Landgraab: A down-to-earth surgeon, Geoffrey fell into a pile of Simoleons when he fell in love with Nancy Landgraab and married into her ridiculously wealthy family. (OG bio)
Malcolm Landgraab: The only heir of the Landgraabs is still a young toddler, but his mother is doing all the necessary steps to prepare Malcolm for the future as soon as possible.

The Wainwright family. (Blair Wainwright [Original & Younger version]) Susan and Boyd Wainwright remain the same)
Wainwright family:
Susan and Boyd's daughter is almost done with high school and has already plans for her future. Until she's gets her degree, she still stays under the Wainwright's roof in order to prepare herself slowly for the day she leaves the nest.
Susan Wainwright: Susan insisted, that just like other couples, they should at least have one child. Never had she expected a child only could give two busy parents a lot of work. Good thing, upon her promotion, she was able to earn more money, so she could buy any toy in the world to keep her daughter occupied.
Boyd Wainwright: Boyd had his days, where he experimented chess tactics with himself, while his wife was occupied with other things. This woke up the interest of Blair and Boyd took the chance to teach Blair the most important function of a Sim-being.
Blair Wainwright: Blair spent most of her childhood alone in her room entertained with her own toys and console. Her parents made sure, she would get everything she wanted. They didn’t really spoil her in the way other parents do, more they did that to have their time for their projects….
(Beau Andrews has a different body shape. Victoria Andrews remain the same)
Andrews family:
Beau and Victoria met at high school and moved to Sunset Valley to start their live together. Both already have plans for their future, mostly Beau, who has been talking non-stop during high school times about becoming a sports Sim.
Beau Andrews: Beau finally got the chance to show his worth as a soccer player at the new stadium in Sunset Valley. He was taken this chance to heart and practices daily in order to raise his chances on being accepted.
Victoria Andrews: Upon finishing school, Victoria got herself a job at the Doo Peas tower. She’s happy, that her husband has plans for his own future and while she supports him on his dreams, she’s pondering about, what lies in their plans of life, when both their careers follow good routes.
Claire Ursine remains the same by looks )
Claire Ursine (A Single living Sim)
Claire Ursine: Claire saved up enough money to be able to buy a house right by the ocean. She enjoys to be out at the nature under the stars and to fish. Being lonely doesn’t bother Claire that much. She does socialize enough at the work and the town at the moment for her doesn’t show anyone, she could consider as a friend.

(Charles Durant [Created by Ecofinisher] Molly French remains the same)
French-Durant Family:
Molly and Charles assumed a relationship weeks after their first meeting. Things have been going very well between the two. Molly someday has a big announcement to make, which none of the two expected. A baby! Molly French: Molly is glad, that despite their mishap he’s going to support her with their future baby. Molly has a very good feeling about the baby’s gender and has already listed down a couple of names, Sandi being one of her favorites.
Charles Durant: Charles is totally not ready for this! He knows he's partially to blame for the unwanted pregnancy, but he can’t tell it to Molly’s face, that he doesn’t really want that baby. Should he just be honest with her? Should he just assume fatherhood and live separately from her? Many, many possibilities, making him crazy, which eventually could even lead him to choose the wrong one….

Sunset Died - Bunch Family (1)
It's 7:36 a.m., Monday. Jack Bunch is preparing breakfast for the family. At least with the ingredients that are available. But this family is doing almost as well as the Keatons compared to others. Because their house was completely spared from the great catastrophe. But yet the whole thing had its effects.
At the time, Jack had just returned from a mission in which he himself had been seriously injured. He planned to go on vacation with his family, but then the meteorites came. "eww, that salad tastes totally disgusting"/ "it's been outside all night, you should have noticed that beforehand"/ "but I didn't!"
The injuries from the accident he suffered during his last military deployment are still clearly visible and will probably remain for the rest of his life. But the family is glad that Jack is still alive. He has not been on duty since the incident and the disaster. He would love to return to his post.
"Mom, when will I finally get my own room? Arlo snores really loudly"/ "huh? I don't" / "oh yes, but when you're asleep, you can't hear it…" / "pff, I don't do that, I'm still a child and not an old man like dad". Jack called out: "hey, I must have heard wrong?"
"Good morning!"/ "Good morning, Ethan…"/ "Didn't Lisa come home last night?"/ "No, she's coming today…"/ "Did she get to sleep over at VJ's again? Hey, when can I let Holly spend the night here?"/ "hh, you know I'm not on good terms with her parents," Judy replied. Ethan reacted somewhat irritably. "but Holly's not like her parents, you know that!".
Of course, Judy also knows that, unlike her parents, Holly is a very helpful and nice person. "hh, well, fine, you can bring her. "/ "Thanks, mom"/ "I want to stop by the hospital today and see if there's anything I can do for the people there"
"Don't forget our other plans. What Boyd suggested to us yesterday could be a good idea". Boyd Wainwright had visited them the night before and told them about the suggestion Zelda had made. That all the inhabitants should gather in front of the Alto mansion and make their displeasure known. "Do you really think it will help if we all stand in front of their house and demonstrate? You don't believe that yourself, Jack. We may outnumber them, but they still have the upper hand. I have to go now".
When Judy arrived at the small hospital, Jamie was already there. "Hello, how are you, it looks like there's not much going on today? What's with this bone egon?". Jamie had to smile. "hnhn, today everyone who wants to can learn a bit about anatomy and the musculoskeletal system. "/ "I want to learn something too!"/ "Oh, Malcolm, hello".
"Good morning, Morgana, nice to see you"/ "Hello, Judy. Oh, good, she found him after all"/ "Where was he?"/ "In the cellar under the collapsed hospital. We were able to find an entrance and get a few things out that were stored there. Now if we jast had a powerful electricity generator…".
"What do you need it for?"/ "For the X-ray machine. It's one of the newer models where you can stand in it - if you can stand…. We'd have to add a small room that's dark…"/ "But you need a generator… I'll talk to Jack, maybe he'll have an idea"/ "Really? That would be so nice, thank you!"
.While Judy helps a little at the hospital, her son has been to the Altos in the meantime and brought his girlfriend in his home. "You're always the savior in times of need. I can hardly stand it at home"/ "hnhn, always happy to help. What's going on with your family?".
"well..they always think I don't notice… and actually I should have thought about it much earlier… I mean, we always have some food at home, actually more than enough that we could give away… It doesn't come from a supermarket. And it's not cheap either, the quality is very good… I don't know where my father always gets it from".
"Your father?"/ "I don't know what he does in the background, but it's certainly nothing good. And he's always totally stressed, like he's under pressure somehow…"/ "Who or what would put him under pressure?"/ "I don't know… I've spoken to my parents so often that they should help you and the others…".
"We got off the best here. Our house is completely unscathed, except that all the green stuff is growing on the roof now…. Dad's trophies didn't even fly off the wall in the crash. "/ "hnhn, must be karma. You're a good family"/ "hn…yeah, but we can't support everyone on our own".
"I know, that's why it's so unfair, I just don't understand why you're all being left in the lurch like this… At some point your supplies will run out too"/ "don't worry about it… I found some seeds the other day, I think something good will come of it. And we need meat again… I think VJ made himself some arrows and a bow"/ "a bow?".
"Yes, he wants to go hunting…"/ "You mean… He wants to kill animals?"/ "Well, how else are we going to get meat, eh? He definitely wants to share it with everyone. I know you don't like meat"/ "No, I love animals too much for that. You're welcome to it. Do you think he can handle it?"/ "definitely".

My TV show favourites of all time
Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes - they cannot be bested. Goated shows.
Doctor Who - RTD era only. Nostalgia n that.
Black Mirror - UK series’ only. I first watched it when I was 13 and it was …memorable to say the least.
Bob & Rose - a wonderful creation by RTD. Despite its simplicity, this is really something special. Very funny and excellent dialogue.
Queer as Folk - Groundbreaking. Fun. Camp.
Cucumber - I think of this as as a sequel/modern day equivalent to Queer as Folk.
Line of Duty - Series 1-3 only. Intense.
Bodies - Jed Mercurio’s show. Rather underrated and unknown by most. Highly recommended, especially if you like dark humour
Frasier - The most British American sitcom ever. I enjoyed up until Daphne and Niles got together.
Waterloo Road - Series 1-8 were so much fun to watch whilst at school.
Misfits - A really funny show that also happens to have some great sci fi elements. I didn’t expect to enjoy this one so much. It’s like “Skins” but far superior.
Breaking Bad - a classic. Despite being slow at times, those last episodes at the end of series 5 more than made up for it.
The Sopranos - I once saw a great fanfic writer explain the show perfectly: “the sopranos is to television what Dante’s inferno is to literature”. There’s a good reason this one is always put at the top of those “greatest tv shows of all time” lists. Watch it and find out. My mistake was watching this show too young - many jokes went over my head. Definitely due a rewatch :)
Game of Thrones - Series 1-4 are excellent, and do (fairly) well to stay true to the books. Series 5 onwards isn’t worth your time. Highly recommended to read the books first before watching the show!
This is going to hurt - I enjoyed this much more than I expected. The guy who plays the main character of the show does it really quite well.
Peep show - As i age, this show only becomes more relatable. British humour at its best
Brass Eye - Chris Morris is the GOAT! The original Ali G.
Jam - Another Chris Morris show. Everything he’s made is of the highest quality. Jam just happens to be one of the darkest shows I’ve ever watched. It’s pure genius but not for the faint of hearts. Lovely ambient soundtrack as well.
The thick of it - Malcolm Tucker is an icon. An awful but hilarious, raging mad Scottish legend. The political satire is off the charts good.
Green wing - Very silly, but very funny. There’s a twist in the end of series 1 that is genuinely unexpected. One of the most unique sitcoms you’ll watch.
Nathan Barley - Chris Morris and Charlie Brooke, two geniuses, get together to create a TV show. Of course it was going to be fantastic. This one took me a while to get into, but once I did, it made me laugh a lot.
The book group - I have a weird fondness for this. Highly recommended if you’re a book nerd.
The simpsons - the golden years made it one of the best shows ever. And it will never not be weird how the Simpson’s managed to be spot on with its predictions.
It’s a sin - Made me cry. A lot. Educated me as well. It’s a RTD show, of course I was going to love it.
End of the fucking world - a show I watched ages ago, but I remember liking a lot. Can’t remember too much of what happened, but I had a lot of affection for the characters.
Sex House - online series that can be watched on YouTube from the onion account. Despite the raunchy title, it’s anything but that. It’s a lot smarter than you would think it to be. Watch it. But don’t expect much sex.
Last tango in Halifax - not the type of show I usually enjoy. But the sally wainwrights writing make the characters endearing, and what might seem like a slow boring show spring into something funny and special.
Happy Valley - Sarah Lancashire…Christ on a bike, that woman can act.
Clocking Off - Series 1-2 are surprisingly great. I was mostly invested in Mac’s character, but the writing for most of the episodes is quality.
Humans - Series 1 was really enjoyable. Don’t remember the other series that well.
The Wire - Tragically I have only watched the first series, but it was really super. One of those shows that’s tricky to get into at first, but we’ll worth pursuing.
Death Note - Can i include anime here? Of course. I usually turn my nose up at anime actually, but this one is different to most. There is a cat and mouse dynamic between the two main characters L and Light. This drives the plot. It’s a remarkable show, one I like to rewatch every now and then.
Killing Eve - My oh my, this show went downhill fast. I include it as a favourite merely because series 1 alone was utter perfection.
Goodness gracious me - Asians are funny. Also cuts deep into racism in the uk at the time.
Sugar Rush - I really enjoyed watching this when I was a teen.
Luther - like killing eve and death note, there is a cat and mouse dynamic between Luther and Alice (a psychopath) in this show which is what makes it something special
The traitors - a reality show like no other. The game theory, particularly in the early episodes make this really fun to watch.
Years and Years - Yet more RTD. This one made me cry as well, inevitably, but it was also warm and fuzzy in places too.

In 2007, Sally Sparrow is exploring the mysterious house Wester Drumlins where there had been a series of disappearances over the last two years. Inside the house, there appears to be a message written just for her underneath peeling wall paper. Freaked out by this, Sally convinces her friend Kathy Nightengale to visit the house the next day. At the house, Kathy suddenly dissapears and a man shows up with a letter from his grandmother. The letter says it's from Kathy. She says she some how got transported back to December 5th, 1920. She meets up with Kathy's brother to let him know Kathy loves him. While there, she discovers he is fascinated by a series of Easter eggs on DVDs of someone called the Doctor making random comments. She then goes to the police. DI Billy Shipton tells her that cars have been found at that house for the last two years. The weirdest thing found there is what appears to be a police box, but the windows were all wrong and the phone fake. She gets a call from him later and she meets him in the hospital, but he is old and hours away from death. He says he had been transported back to 1969 where he met a stranded time traveler known as the Doctor and his companion Martha Jones. It was Shipton who had put in the Easter Eggs. Sally finally realizes the Easter Eggs are only on the DVD titles she personally owns. She gets Kathy's brother. Thanks to a time paradox involving him writing down the conversation, she is able to have a conversation with the Doctor using the Easter Egg. She learns that he and Martha Jones had been hurled back in time by a race of aliens using the form of stone statues. He needs her help to get his time machine known as the TARDIS back. He warns her that if she should encounter the aliens, sometimes known as the Weeping Angels, her only defence is to keep looking at them as they can't move when looked at. Otherwise she risks being hurled in time as well. ("Blink", Doctor Who, TV)

Why
Ok so I have been on here reading your blogs for years but have never written one of own. I guess my first will be an intro. I have been a practicing pagan since 1988. After using a Ouja board and holding séances in junior high I was labeled a witch at the Catholic School I attended at the time. Much bullying followed. My grandfather on one side practiced dousing and on the other side were Abenaki roots.
When I reached high school a lovely girl named Hope touched my hand and said she felt I was a witch but meant it as a compliment and directed me towards Wicca. I had this amazingly brilliant friend named Malcolm who grew up in an actual commune and gave me my first books about paganism.
In 1988 I started taking classes from the Church and School of Wicca (Gavin and Yvonne Frost). My first husband was in the army. I found a very warm and welcoming open circle called Ravenfain in Nashville TN in 94. His next duty station took us to Alaska. I missed the fellowship. I found out about Sacred Well and took their deaconship training so I could be of service to other pagans in the area. During a visit back in Nashville I gave my high priestess a buckle on her garter. I received my second degree initiation and started an open circle at Ft Wainwright called Dragon's Keep. The post chaplain came to watch a funeral service for a member's child. We also had an assistant chaplain from the Air Force base joining. The military was still a bit unsure about pagans. I was inspired by the work Charles Arnold, author and shop owner in my hometown had done in Canada and wanted to pass on the sense of family in circle that I found at Ravenfain.
After my army wife days were over I mostly practiced at home. While living in New Hampshire I did find a wonderful group in Haverill Massachusetts but Vermont is just too far away to drive there. I have fond memories of my handfasting on the beach.
Something in my yearned to go deeper in my practice as a pagan. While I cherished sabbats and esbats, I wanted a daily practice beyond meditation and divination.
After years of being unable to astral project, it happened. Hekate called. Her hound Hecabe pulled me quickly into the astral realm. I answered Her call. I took some classes from Cyndi Brannon and became a devotee in the Covenant of Hekate. I found the daily practice I craved. Goddess was too generic for me, now I had a patron. She gave me strength I needed to leave bad situation I had been in for many years. As a disabled person the thought of running away without any money in the bank was scary but after a lot of hard shadow work I did it.
Now I am back in my home state of Vermont. I am starting over from scratch and living at a hotel for now. I feel a sense of peace and joy I had not experienced for many years. I am with my children and grandchildren.I get to enjoy all those precious moments I would have missed out on had I stayed in Florida.
Hekate led me to Hellenic Polytheism. I am a newbie. It has been about two years now. I spend around 2 hrs a day in mediation and prayer. It helps me immensely with chronic pain.
My pronouns are her/she and I am a pan( not the God) Demi girl ( can you say that at 50? )Lol. I am hoping now that I am back in Vermont, I will connect with other pagans. I love being able to connect on line as well.
This my first post. I am stepping out of my comfort zone. Maybe in time there will be more.

John Hickey as Hewitson. Photo: Gillian A Lawson.
Impact: From archive to stage in 7 weeks
In 2006 the Friends of Lancashire Archives bought the only known diaries of a provincial Victorian journalist, those of Anthony Hewitson (1836-1912). These have now been transcribed by Pauline Wainwright, Margaret Dickinson and me, with proof-reading by volunteer members of the Friends of Lancashire Archives, all with a view to publication.
As October 2012 approached, Margaret (Hewitson’s great great niece) and I (an ex-journalist who used the diaries in my PhD) wanted to mark the centenary of Hewitson’s death. In early September I approached an actor friend, John Hickey, about an evening of dramatized readings from the diaries. John was very enthusiastic, and it all began to get out of hand, in a very enjoyable way.
John contacted a playwright friend, Derek Martin and I passed on chunks of the more dramatic parts of the diaries to Derek, who miraculously wove a story out of the disconnected diary entries. Another friend, the excellent pianist Malcolm Sim, was roped in to provide musical accompaniment, and I created some slides to project above the stage, showing dates, biographical information, and family photographs, kindly lent by members of Hewitson’s family. A servant (the high turnover of servants became a running gag) was ably played by Cristina Neacsu.
Seven weeks after I had put the idea to John in the pub, some 80 people squeezed into a theatre at UCLAN for a superbly acted, moving and entertaining hour of drama, followed by a Q&A with Margaret and me. The show sold out, as it did when we put it on again in January.
I feel very lucky that we could honour Hewitson’s life in such a powerful way. The whole thing worked with the minimum of stress because I’m lucky enough to know a group of people who are creative, experienced and reliable, with big can-do ratings and small egos, and who were gripped by the history and drama contained in those old diaries. We are also grateful to Lancashire Archives for allowing us to use the diaries in this way. It was great fun.

There were times when it seemed like Mac Miller would never stop rapping. At his peak, he was an indefatigable creative force who wrote and recorded hundreds of verses stuffed with cocksure bravado, unending internal rhyme schemes and sly double entendres. These verses were volleyed off onto grandiose Billboard-topping studio albums, knotty mixtapes scavenged by backpack rap nerds, or the projects of his countless collaborators at a breathtaking rate.
Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick in 1992, rapped with a restless determination: to outrun his initial reputation as a white frat rapper; to distract from his anxieties and addictions; to amuse himself and his friends; and to gain the respect of his idols, which he did: as Jay-Z admitted on Twitter, “Black people really magic. Mac Miller nice too though.”
But there’s not much rapping at all on Circles, his sixth (and presumably last) studio album released posthumously on Friday. Miller was well into the recording process of Circles when he died in September 2018 of an accidental overdose. Because he envisioned Circles as a companion to his previous album Swimming, released in August 2018, his family was left with an agonizing decision about whether to finish and release it: “This is a complicated process that has no right answer. No clear path,” they wrote in a statement on his Instagram page when they announced the forthcoming album. “We simply know that it was important to Malcolm for the world to hear it.” The album was ultimately completed by the veteran producer Jon Brion, who worked with Miller extensively before his death.
On Swimming and his previous album The Divine Feminine, Miller was already shifting his focus from dogged lyricism to shrewd songcraft, building out deep funk grooves and lush orchestral arrangements to reach a new creative pinnacle. Circles is the endpoint of this verbal retreat: Miller pared down his syllables to mostly embrace a soulful brand of folk rock, relying on his unadorned, plaintive singing like never before.
But Circles is also an anguished portrait of a man close to burnout, striving to escape the ruthless pace with which he previously carried himself. “Maybe I’ll lay down for a little / Instead of always trying to figure everything out,” he sang on the single “Good News,” released last week. Circles is not the culmination of an epic life’s work, but a heartbreaking plea for peace from a man who had spent a relentless decade in the spotlight.
While many of Miller’s final public performances—like on NPR’s Tiny Desk or The Late Show With Stephen Colbert—were driven by uptempo funk, Circles most resembles the back half of Swimming, which sinks into piano balladry and quiet expressions of regret. Miller was long a John Lennon superfan, and certain songs on Circles recall the rawest piano-heavy arrangements of Lennon’s work with the Plastic Ono Band—as well as the unvarnished arrangements and melodies of a different Brion collaborator, Rufus Wainwright. Miller also delivers a committed cover of the rock band Love’s “Everybody’s Gotta Live,” lending the existential 1972 anthem a bounce without sacrificing any of its mournfulness.
It may seem initially strange for one of the world’s most talented rappers to take his cues from rock, but Miller’s inclinations fit into a larger trend over the last few years in the hip-hop world of imbuing rap cadences with melody. The current Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” is sung all the way through; many other artists, from Tyler the Creator to Dominic Fike to Brockhampton to Rex Orange County, have found the sweet spot between indie rock, hip-hop and soul. Streaming audiences have followed these artists to the spaces between musical walls: the genreless playlists Pollen and Lorem are two of the most popular discovery hubs on Spotify.
Miller used to hide his wavering voice under a phalanx of filters, pitching effects and doubled vocal tracks to the point that he was sometimes unrecognizable. But on Circles, he puts his unadorned singing voice front and center, lending the album a casual and startling intimacy. On “Hand Me Downs,” one of the album’s strongest songs, he effortlessly slides up to high notes with a husky sweetness before dropping back down to tiptoe over syllables with his trademark playful drawl.
Miller is no Aretha Franklin. But he employs his vocal chops with confidence and charm, and his comparative lack of vocal strength actually lends poignancy to an album haunted by anxiety and drift. He was admittedly taking opioids in the months leading up to his death, and Circles certainly feels like an album made on downers: his lyrics lack clarity or specific targets, and at times he seems to be singing at a remove from himself. “Ever since I can remember I been keeping it together / But I’m feeling strange,” he murmurs on “Hand Me Downs.” On “Hands,” he reprimands himself, as if to shake himself from a stupor: ”Why don’t you wake up from your bad dreams / When’s the last time you took a little time for yourself?”
Regret is a huge theme on Circles, with Miller constantly alluding to past mistakes; his lyrics and turn to aesthetic sparseness can be read as an attempt to distance himself from a previous frenzied or craven mentality. On the defiant and brash 2012 single “Loud,” Miller had announced “People lie, numbers don’t,” and cited sold-out shows and Billboard numbers. In direct contrast, Miller sleepily croons on “Surf,” “People, they lie / But hey, so do I” before delivering a new Zen-like mantra: “There’s water in the flowers / Let’s grow.”
If Miller’s new subdued attitude was healthier for him, it also put something of a wet blanket over his creativity. Miller often talked about wanting to have good days and bad days—to embrace the full and agonizing spectrum of human emotion. But Circles exists somewhere in the hazy middle, capturing neither the harrowing lows of Swimming nor the euphoric braggadocio of GO:OD AM.
And aspects of the album leave behind the nagging suspicion that Miller, if he had lived, might have completed it differently: he might have re-written generic placeholder lyrics (“I don’t know where I been lately but I’ve been alright”) and brought more life to instrumental parts that often sound like demos. Circles is perhaps too small in scale to be Miller’s final masterpiece; it doesn’t exhibit the mammoth musical growth that listeners had come to expect from him from album to album.
But it’s still compelling in its own drowsy way. Miller’s ability to locate and lock into unique, catchy flows and melodies is still extremely evident—particularly on the invigorating “Hands.” Brion deserves some credit for constructing blue-grey textures to match Miller’s somber mood. And his growth here is of a different type—toward a patient spirituality, toward being okay with stasis for the purpose of self-care. “Some people say they want to live forever,” he muses on “Complicated,” before adding, “That’s way too long, I’ll just get through the day.”

Timestamp #191: Blink
Doctor Who: Blink (1 episode, s03e10, 2007)
“People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually – from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint – it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly… timey-wimey… stuff.”
Photography Sally Sparrow engages in a little light breaking and entering to capture images of fallen chandeliers and moss in fireplaces. The place is definitely run down and falling apart, but it holds a message written on the wall, shrouded by wallpaper: “Beware of the Weeping Angels.”
The message calls her by name and tells her to duck. When she does, a rock impacts the wall where her head once was. She only sees an angel statue outside the window, but the wall is signed: “Love from the Doctor, 1969.”
She returns to her friend Kathy Nightingale’s home to find numerous televisions all displaying a certain familiar man wearing glasses and warning people not to blink. Sally prepares a warm drink, meets Kathy’s brother Larry (who is nude), and tells Kathy about what she experienced.
Sparrow and Nightingale go back to the abandoned house the next morning to investigate. Sally notes that the Angel has moved. When the doorbell chimes, Sally finds a delivery man who calls her by name and hands her a letter addressed to her. Meanwhile, Kathy continues poking around, oblivious to the fact that the Angels are moving when she’s not looking. The deliveryman, Malcolm Wainwright, notes that the letter was sent by Katherine Wainwright, previously known as Kathy Nightingale, also known as the man’s grandmother. When a shocked Sally looks for Kathy, her friend has disappeared.
The Angel touched Kathy and transported her to 1920. The letter tells Sally the entire story, but she doesn’t believe it. She rushes upstairs to find a group of Angels, one of which is holding a key. She grabs the key and rushes after Malcolm, but the man has disappeared. Sally takes the letter to a local coffee shop and reads it with interest. After telling her life story, it directs her to a local DVD shop to talk with Larry.
Larry is watching the videos of the Doctor and Martha again. Sally tells him that Kathy has left town for a while and loves him, which throws Larry off a bit. They talk about the videos – an Easter egg or hidden extra on seventeen unrelated DVDs – and the mystery behind them. The video seems like half a conversation, and when Larry leaves the room for a moment, she actually fills in a couple of the blanks. Shaken, she gets the list of DVDs from Larry and takes the story to the police.
At the police station, she experiments by blinking around two Angels that are across the street. They vanish and reappear next to the window. She meets with DI Billy Shipton who shows her a collection of items related to the abandoned house, including several cars and a big blue locked police box. Billy asks her out for a drink and she gives him her phone number. When she leaves, Billy notices four Angels taking an interest in the TARDIS. He investigates and blinks.
Sally puts the pieces together about the key and the lock on the box, but when she returns both the TARDIS and Shipton have disappeared.
Shipton arrives in 1969 and meets the Doctor and Martha. The Doctor explains that the Angels feed on temporal energy generated by sending their targets back in time. He tracked Billy’s arrival using his makeshift timey-wimey detector – “It goes ding when there’s stuff.” – and gives him a mission to warn Sally Sparrow.
Billy calls Sally, summoning her to a hospital. She finds an elderly and dying man with a message from the Doctor: “Look at the list.” Billy gave up on being a police officer, instead getting into publication and then video publishing. He was the author of the DVD list and the developer of the Easter eggs. Sally stays with Billy until the rain stops, which is when the accidental time traveler dies.
Sally discovers that the list of DVDs is the exact contents of her personal video library. She summons Larry to the abandoned house with a DVD player and together they fill in the other half of the Doctor’s conversation.
Through the video, the Doctor tells Sally and Larry the story. Larry writes down the conversation as it happens, and that transcript is how the Doctor developed the video in the first place. He also explains who the Weeping Angels are – they are as old as the universe and quantum locked, frozen by the sight of any living creature – and that they have the phone box. Sally asks how to get the TARDIS back to the Doctor, but that’s where the transcript ends. The Doctor warns them not to blink.
But one has snuck up on them.
Sally and Larry work out a plan to escape the house, eventually finding that the basement is the only path open to them. The Angels have stored the TARDIS there, and Sally approaches the box with the key. The Angels cause the lights to flicker, gradually advancing on the pair as they work the lock. At the last moment, they get inside. A security hologram orders them to place the DVD in the TARDIS console as the Angels assault the time capsule. The TARDIS dematerializes around them, leaving the humans surrounded by the Angels, but since they are all staring at each other they are quantum locked.
Some time later, Sally and Larry are working at the DVD store. Sally has been documenting the experience and trying to figure out how the Doctor knew about the transcript. Larry goes on a grocery run as a car pulls up with the Doctor and Martha inside. Sally rushes outside, figuring out that this version is from an earlier point in his timeline, and delivers the information.
Hand in hand, Sally and Larry go back inside the shop – Sparrow and Nightingale’s – as we are treated to examples of just how many Weeping Angels surround us every day.
Don’t blink.
I’ll start with this being a fantastic episode. Spoilers for the end of this timestamp, but it earns the 5 in my book. It’s a suspenseful thriller with elements of the horror genre spread throughout. Even with it being an ontological paradox – the information travels in a causal loop with no defined beginning or end point – the time travel elements are believable. The enemies are a new threat and are also downright creepy: They don’t directly kill, but they do feed off of the victim’s temporal displacement, they are everywhere, and they are virtually unstoppable.
This episode’s position near the top of the charts is well deserved.
On the downside, we come to writer Steven Moffat. Many of the elements that will haunt the Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who are in plain sight here, from the more juvenile antics of the Doctor – timey-wimey and devices that go ding – to the last-minute deus ex machina “clever” saves. Don’t get me wrong, those elements are fine in moderation (just like they were fine here), but as the Moffat era progressed, they became staples of the Doctor Who brand. There’s only so much of the same thing that is acceptable in a show inherently about change and evolution.
What I do know for certain is that the Weeping Angels were never better than in this story.
Rating: 5/5 – “Fantastic!”
