"Huh, a sumo wrestler?" Sumo was coming up a lot in his world these days. How odd! "Hm. Based on the build and the way you move... You're probably a Makushita or a Sandanme, right?"

"Wow. I'm actually impressed. You've grown a lot in the past month or two." Brawly grinned.
Brendan continued to find himself surprised that Kerry could stand toe-to-toe with the same kind of people who lift Lairon for fun. He wasn't sure why. Maybe it was something in how her practice seemed so... Solitary? Melancholy?
What was worse, in a match that Brendan had barely followed, the two of them were barely winded.
And there Kerry was, looking like someone who had been expecting a scolding and instead got praised.
"Still, I'm sure you saw your own weaknesses. When it comes to defense-- you're top notch. You read intent like a book and don't get distracted, even by feints or misleading lines. You practiced what I taught you about sensing Aura well, and you know intimately how to cut off angles."
Kerry steeled herself. "But my offense... I landed one hit on you that entire match, and it was a short reverse."
"Yes. You're so used to fighting as a 9-year-old against targets much bigger than you, that the 12-year-old you who's as tall as most adults can't hit the target. But that's hardly a problem."
"-- Eh?"
"You just need some good sparring time, and your muscle memory and power will take care of the rest."
"-- Really!?" Kerry brightened.
"Yeah! Now, there's another problem. I think that if you take a little time, and train with me... Well, The trouble is, I'm not sure how much I can properly teach."
"What do you mean?"
"It's... the most dangerous time for any martial artist." Brawly put a hand on his mouth in thought, as if reviewing the fight, and then nodded again. "Yes. In terms of sumo, and in good condition, you are Makushita."
"-- You've trained with a lot of Fighting-type masters, huh?" Kerry asked.
"Oh, yeah! That was part of my dream, my [Endless Summer]."
Kerry blinked at the Galarian. "But, uh, Makushita..."
"What's that mean?" Brendan asked.
"In sumo," Kerry said, "There are... nn, classes? Grades? of sumotori. The very bottom, the very beginners, are Jonouichi, the first steps. then is... Jonidan, Sandanme, and Makushita. Then the ones you're likely familiar with-- the genuine pros. Juuryou, Makuuchi, Komosubi, Sekiwake, Ozeki, Yokozuna."
"That's so low though! Surely she's higher than that!" Brendan exclaimed.
"Makushita is the toughest division," Brawly and Kerry said at the same time.
"Ah-- Sorry. Please continue, Gym Leader."
"Ha! No, I'm glad you understand," Brawly said, then turned to Brendan. "Think on it, Brendan. Juuryou is the first professional grade, and a powerful one. Suddenly, you're granted a lot of privileges! Privileges people fight fiercely for, whether they're going up to Juuryou... Or coming down. Makushita has the strongest of the new entrants and the most cunning of the old-- strong rikishi who were injured and come back."
"-- oh, so it's like the time from six to eight badges?" Brendan said.
"-- Yes, yes, it's the same way," Brawly said. "I like this one. Quick on the uptake."
"Well, you heard him, Brendan. Wanna train?"
Brendan swallowed, a bead of cold sweat running down his back.

Some more sumo boys for the AU! Young Toshiyori Garmadon (At this point Juryo) with his old sparring mate Clouse, still only a Makushita ranked rikishi
The latter would often need to paint on a couple coats over the black splotches. Later on the pair would meet up with a very eccentric sponsor, one whom has a keen interest in the snake that bit Garmadon

Asahigata Kametaro who was captured by the Shinsengumi
tl;dr: This sumo wrestler fought for Choshu, was rewarded by the Emperor, got captured by the Shinsengumi, then helped the Shinsengumi, then fought for Satsuma against the Shinsengumi, carried the imperial banner, helped set up the Red Cross Society, founded a shrine, and may have been the namesake of a beer brand... What a life 😅
----
I first learned of the existence of Tamahoko Shrine when I read the book "史談 土俵のうちそと" (author: 武者 成一).
It’s dedicated to Emperor Komei, and the location is Rokuganzan, Taketoyo-cho, Chita-gun, Aichi Prefecture.
It’s close to our lodgings in Nagoya (Higashiura-cho, Chita-gun).
The shrine was founded by Asahigata Kametaro, a Kyoto sumo wrestler.
Tumblr media
Tamahoko-jinja Shrine. The style is similar to that of Ise Jingu Shrine.
Asahigata was born in 1842 in Osaka.
It is said that he was originally a follower of Minato or Asahiyama of Osaka sumo, and that he briefly served in the Choshu Sumo Corps (headed by Ito Hirobumi), and later became a follower of Shikorogata of Kyoto sumo, but this is not entirely clear.
In Kyoto, where the political situation was unstable at the time, Kyoto wrestlers, who were favored by the Imperial Court, formed a corps of wrestlers to protect the inner court in case of emergency, and Asahikata (as he was then) was nominated as its representative.
Incidentally, the Kyoto ranking list for the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate is missing, so Asahigata's position and other details are unknown.
And then—
In July of the first year of the Genji Era (1864), the Choshu clan, which had once been in power, turned to counterattack and the Kinmon Incident (the Hamaguri Gate Incident) took place.
Asahigata, who led the force, was awarded a great prize by Emperor Komei.
“Asahigata, who took the shining shadow in his hand, brilliant for a thousand generations” (照影をひら手に受けし旭形   千代にかがやくいさをなりけり)
He was given the Emperor's poem, a flag, a cup, and other articles, and changed his name from "Asahigata" (朝日形) to "Asahigata" (旭形) (meaning "rising sun" in Japanese).
It was not long after this, in November, that he was captured by the Shinsengumi.
It seems that he was captured by the Shinsengumi a little later, in November, for his role as a liaison between the lords and the samurai trying to overthrow the Shogunate.
After that, however, he helped raise funds for the Shinsengumi in Osaka.
Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, both members of the Shinsengumi, were deeply devoted to the ideals of the Sonno Joui and did not conflict with Asahikata’s ideology.
However, both subsequently diverged when it came to overthrowing vs. assisting the Shogunate.
When Satsuma and Choshu seized the leadership in the Imperial Court, the Kyoto sumo wrestlers who were close to the Imperial Court followed them, while the Aizu Clan and the Shinsengumi, who became the anti-mainstream faction, were labeled as "Imperial Enemies”.
In the battle of Toba-Fushimi (Keio 4, 1868), Asahigata was a member of the Satsuma clan's artillery, and fought hard despite being shot at.
When the Emperor Meiji went to Osaka, he carried the imperial banner, and the new government offered him the 6th rank, but he declined it.
He served until August of 1875, and the highest rank he could be confirmed in the ranking chart was the first rank under the makushita (juryo rank).
After his retirement, he contributed to the development of the Red Cross Society and was involved in various public service projects.
In 1900, he built his long desired Tamahoko Shrine dedicated to Emperor Komei, and passed away on March 11, 1934 (at the age of 61).
He is rumored to be the namesake of "Asahi Beer", but the origin of "Asahi" is unknown.

IWGP World Heavyweight Title Vacated, Ospreay Neck Injury; Card For Road to Wrestle Grand Slam Nagoya Show 5/22/2021; Collision In Korea Dark Side Of The Ring Tonight; Ren Narita’s Missing AEW Dark Match; Updates On Japan in State Of Emergency
Tumblr media
The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship is now vacant. Will Ospreay suffered a neck injury in his match v. Shingo Takagi on 5/4/2021, and is returning to the UK for treatment and rehab. As nobody knows what his timeline for returning is, it's been decided to vacate the title. I'm not usually one to speak of curses and omens, but this IWGP World Heavyweight title has been cursed so far. Between the hoopla of unification, the damp reaction to the reveal of the title, Kota Ibushi dropping it on his first defense, and now Ospreay having to vacate after only one defense, the life of this title belt has not exactly been covered in glory. NJPW doesn't have a plan as of right now to determine what's next for it.
In the meantime, the card for Saturday's Road to Wrestle Grand Slam show in Nagoya has been released. The three Tokyo Korakuen Hall shows from 5/24 - 5/26/2021 have not been as yet. Saturday's show is not streaming, which is probably a good thing, because this is a nothing card for a tour show that probably shouldn't even be happening at this point. Once again, NJPW has not revealed who has tested positive for COVID-19 (a related note on that below) but you can make reasonable guesses when you see who are, and are not, on this card.
Road to Wrestle Grand Slam - 5/22/2021, Aichi Nagoya Congress Center Event Hall
YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. Yota Tsuji
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Master Wato v. Chase Owens & Gedo [Bullet Club]
Hirooki Goto & Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] v. Tetsuya Naito & SANADA [Los Ingobernables]
Kota Ibushi & Tomoaki Honma v. Jeff Cobb & Great O-Khan [United Empire]
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Shingo Takagi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables]
These are all random tag matches to fill a house show card, with only one actual storyline, Kota Ibushi v. Jeff Cobb. Maybe two if you count Tanahashi v. Shingo, but that kinda went on the shelf for Tana v. Jay and Ospreay v. Shingo. Unless you want to count the continuing grief between Goto and Naito that's gone on for years off and on. Not much hope for the Korakuen shows, when they announce those cards, and really, New Japan Pro Wrestling 2021 is a trash fire.
Tumblr media
So here's a weird thing: this past Tuesday afternoon, wrestler Royce Isaacs tweeted out, along with the official AEW looking graphic you see above, that he would be wrestling Ren Narita on that night's edition of AEW Dark (one of AEW's weekly YouTube undercard shows). This would have been fairly reasonable as Ren Narita was with Yuji Nagata at last week's Dynamite, this is a pre-taped show in a cycle of tapings (last night's Dynamite was a pre-tape as well), and the potential was there for both Nagata and/or Narita to have wrestled for either of these shows whilst they were in Jacksonville. It turns out, before Dark was released on YouTube, Isaacs deleted the tweet, and that match (as well as Kal Jak v. Danny Limelight, the latter of whom is an NJPW Strong staple) was not part of the episode. It's possible it got cut and will be used on either Dark or Dark Elevation next week. Or not at all. AEW tape a lot of content for their YouTube shows, so I'd be surprised if it didn't show up in some form eventually.
Some programming notes for tonight (assuming I get this posted in time!):
FinJuice defend the Impact World Tag Team titles tonight against Ace Austin & Madman Fulton tonight on Impact's TV show. That's on AXS TV at 8pm EDT / 7pm CDT.
Vice's Dark Side Of The Ring documentary series features Collision In Korea, the joint-promoted show between NJPW and WCW across two nights in April 1995 in Pyongyang, North Korea. The episode features testimonials from the likes of Antonio Inoki, Eric Bischoff and Scott Norton. That one's on Vice at 9pm EDT / 8pm CDT. If you don't have Vice (I don't), the episode will get posted to YouTube, either through "sources" or on Vice's official channel soon. I may or may not be working on a special project surrounding this event too.
Meanwhile, the situation in Japan regarding the state of emergency is getting critical. A news report yesterday revealed a whopping 83% of respondents are against the Olympics being held in July. Mass protests are continuing, as I reported on Monday. In addition, 6000 doctors and physicians in Japan have signed a letter to the government asking them to halt the Olympics. One thing the pandemic has been very good at is shining a light on discontent with government, and the inequalities, and inequities, in modern capitalist society. This is Japan's turn, as we head back to an era of protests that were more associated with the 60s and 70s in Japan. Right now, the government is looking to expand this even more, as far as Okinawa.
Closer to home, Dragon Gate did confirm that Ben-K tested positive for COVID-19, and has been pulled from the rest of the King Of Gate 2021 tournament. Naruki Doi wrestled Ben-K on 5/14/2021, and has not shown symptoms nor has tested positive as yet, but has been pulled from the tournament as well. No word about Dragon Dia, who was also pulled from the Fukuoka shows this past weekend. DG ran in Chiba last night, and will be doing three dates in Sapporo starting tomorrow.
Sumo is being rocked by yet another breach of COVID-19 protocol scandal, this time with popular ozeki Asanoyama having been caught, and lying to the Sumo Association about, going to a hostess bar during basho time, when rikishi are in lockdown. Asanoyama has been suspended with immediate effect, and will be considered kadoban for next basho; however, he will also be suspended for the next three bashos (in July, September and November), so he will definitely be losing his ranking, possibly down to the fringes of the top (makuuchi) tier in the sport by the time he is allowed to return to competition. Two other, lower-ranking rikishi from the makuuchi division have already been ensnared in their own scandals: Abi was caught last summer, was not only suspended, but denied retirement, and is currently in the third tier of sumo, the makushita division. Maegashira-ranked Ryuden is also currently suspended, and may fall to the second (juryo) or third tiers before he returns as well. I am not sure why it is so hard to Not Go Out when under strict orders from your stablemaster to do so. I've spent most of the last year and three months not going anywhere except to work and the store, maybe going to a park every weekend or so, getting curbside takeout, etc. It's infuriating, honestly. The biggest global health crisis in decades, and the biggest stumbling block to stamping it out is people's selfishness.

Harumafuji and Takanoiwa = “THE two bad boys of sumo”
Takanohana = “one of the most popular yokozuna”
Tumblr media
I mean, I can understand, given some rumors about him, Takanoiwa being considered ONE of several “bad boys” in sumo, but Harumafuji? Obviously, his career ended after the well-known, ugly incident against Iwa... but?!?! That was one case staining an otherwise exemplary Yokozuna career, of a guy widely known and respected for his kindness and hard work...  In contrast, makushita and below guys have allegedly repeatedly bullied lower ranked rikishi and their names are never directly mentioned.
Oh and poor Takanohana, these dirty Mongolians ruined his flawless oyakata career. </sarcasm> (Actually, the article doesn’t even mention the connection he had to the case and Takanoiwa, and how in March last year he actually protected his own pupil Takayoshitoshi when he was the aggressor, yet after he’s out of the Sumo Association he says he won’t meet Takanoiwa face-to-face in at least 10 years)
