Celebratory outfit perfect for New Year season, featuring an antique kimono depicting shishi (lions) on a bridge - maybe a reference to auspicious play Shakkyô. The beautiful pines nicely frame the main motif, and the temari balls add some whimsy.

Kimono is paired with a romantic obi showing yuki-mochi (snow covered) gosho-guruma (ox cart) and late winter/early spring plants (ume/plum blossom, kiku/chrysanthemum, nandina/heavenly bamboo, suisen/daffodil).

Artful, graceful... and a pun. Colette and Rene Flipo's subway poster says, 'Please don't spit on the platform.' However, since 'spit' and 'camellia' are the same word in Japanese, tsubaki, the word isn't written and the flower says it all. The fresh-faced Fo Dog says 'ditto.' These lion dogs, shishi, originated with the Chinese who wanted to duplicate the stone lions that stood guard outside Buddhist temples in India.

Shisa (Medieval)

A variety of domesticated lions found among the cities of the east. The logic behind their creation goes like this: cats are known for being able to see spirits and demons invisible to human eyes. People want protection from those beings, but house cats aren't exactly suitable for the task. So take the same animal, scale it up to proper demon-fighting size, and you get the shisa (otherwise known as komainu, shisi, or singha). Shisa are bred to protect human settlements from unclean spiritual forces and regular ol’ monsters. They spend long periods of time standing still at gates, waiting and watching. A fully grown shisa is larger than a normal lion, able to tackle ogres, wild dragons, and giant centipedes. Their bites are also capable of making contact with spiritual matter. Towns keep at least a pair for safety, and rich families may have their own shisa kennels as a sign of status. Despite their ferocity in the face of monsters, shisa are perfectly placid around humans. Some let them watch after wayward children. For some reason, the domestication process has led to a shortening of their snout and a curliness around the mane. People often mistake them for a type of dog if they don't look close enough. 

-Habitat: Adjacent to human habitats. 

-Slayer Tips: Feral shisa unbeholden to humans are a danger to all. Bring along dogs bred to hunt lions if possible. --

Not the proudest of the artwork here. The idea was to portray the animal which would inspire Chinese guardian lions. At first I tried more outlandish colors, but it didn't look good at all. I might revisit this one day after doing so more studies on statues.

Stone lions for sticker club! Based off the lion statues I used to see in front of my old school.

Erroneously called "foo dogs" in English, stone lions usually come in pairs guarding the entrance of a building. The female lion protects the interior, and the male lion protects the exterior. Traditionally, both the lions are depicted with luscious manes. I chose to make my lady lion sleeker, along with her baby.

I'll be shipping these out on January 1st. Sub to sticker club if ya want this pair of designs in the mail 😸

Cute New Year season outfit pairing kimono and obi patterned with all kind of toys - some shaped like jûnishi (Chinese zodiac animals).

Obi shows clapper toys shaped like shishi (lion, mimicking those used for shishimai/lion dances), koma (tops), and kushi (combs).

Kimono has inu-hariko (dog figurine), jûnishi-themed pull toys and figurines (example with tiger ones), harukoma/takeuma (hobby horse), anesama-ningyô (paper based), temari (ball), tsuzumi (hand drum), suzu (bell), etc!
