#ControllingTheNarrative - Be the change you want to see in your people. People are always waiting on the next person to do it. Or they think that they alone can’t make a difference. If we all think like that nothing will change for real. Stop waiting for the movement and start in your community. Every little step helps build our people up. Start by leading by example, then start by helping someone who is not your family. Show love to any one black you see as if they are your family. BACKSTORY: Emotions were high as family and friends gathered to say their final farewells to 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson. Makiyah was killed on July 16 when gunmen opened fire into a crowd of people in her Northeast D.C. neighborhood. Police: 10-year-old girl killed, 4 others wounded in shooting; search for suspects continues D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham was among the mourners at the funeral, which was held at The Holy Christian House of Praise on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue. Friends who attended told FOX 5's Bob Barnard that Makiyah's neighborhood ice cream truck drove by the service in remembrance of the girl. Detectives have yet to find the men responsible for the shooting that left Wilson dead and four others, including her sister, injured. Video of the incident shows four men wearing masks getting out of a black sedan and opening fire before fleeing the scene. Investigators have not been able to identify any of the suspected shooters. Newsham joined FOX 5 on Tuesday and said the one thing the police department can do for the family is to give them closure by finding out who murdered Makiyah.
