WIP - l'esprit de l'escalier
I recently had a chat with some others from the renegade server about the appeal of grey board and how it can be a choice.
So I wanted to do a simple case. No cloth or paper on the cover, but then I thought, that might be a bit bland so I decided to do a layered board from grey and coloured cardstock.
I prepared both boards at once because it's simpler to cut them to size once they are glued than line them up perfectly to fit. In advance I decided for overlap of the cloth piece from the spine and and cut the blue board more narrow than the grey to make room for that overlap.
I did a test fit and marked up the hinge gap before cutting the cloth back (I had kept it a bit longer for that very purpose) below oyu can see the test fitting and and both sides of the board.
To have it easier I added glue to the the board side and glued in the spine piece. The glue stain on the blue board doesn't matter at all, since it's going to be covered up anyway.
The third layer was added last. Then I gave the boards a quick press and weighed it down to dry.
#bookbinding#wip l'esprit de l'escalier#three piece bradel binding#making layered boards#I actually though of having the blue strip show when looking on the book from the spine side...#small chance for that when I used the blue board to even out the spine cloth#I really should have seen that XD

fionna and cake drawings before and after watching the episodes so far. it’s nostalgic and somehow cathartic and poignant and relatable and—it just started
#i’m part of the demographic where i was a kid when adventure time started and now watching fionna and cake as an adult makes me emotional#because did they keep us in mind when writing fionna and her attitude towards life#the dissatisfaction#the hoping for something more#something more magical than this dreary life filled with working to live and living to work#it’s so reflective of how life feels for me and perhaps many of us#and also Simon’s episode was so sad but so well thought out#exploring his feelings after the events of the adventure time finale is something I’m glad we get to see#there were already so many layers to his character in AT but now it feels like we get to dive deeper#I also felt emotional hearing Rebecca Sugar singing and writing a song that encapsulates his feelings so well#😭 it’s been awhile seeing her work exist alongside these characters#and all of these emotions get stronger because I remember AT being the one to inspire me to be a storyboard artist#when I was younger I used to follow many of the board artists here in tumblr and would get so inspired by them#to create simple but powerful boards that can capture the feelings of characters so well#Rebecca Sugar’s songs for the AT characters inspired me so much too#I’m sorry this is long I’m just feeling so many things experiencing all of this again as an adult#my art#fanart#adventure time#fionna and cake#fionna the human#cake the cat#simon petrikov

anyone know if bookbinding glue works on canvas? im thinking i want to add a shield to my halloween costume next year and am trying to figure out how to attach the front
#not silm#not art#halloween#first attempt w cardboard hot glue and canvas worked fairly well but the back is kind of lumpy from the glue and the corners arent great#so im thinking of doing painted canvas on book board with binding glue to adhere it#so itll be nice and sturdy#not sure how i would attach the straps though#unfortunately im too busy to do much in the way of costume upgrades rn but for next year i have a few things in mind#i definitely want to do a cloak- i saw this nice quilted fabric at joanns that could work as an insulating/lining layer to give it weight#i really want to do fake fur trim for the Fancy Himring Cloak but ill have to find something im not allergic to#idk how to do cloak clasps but the actual sewing part should be reasonably simple since its mostly one piece#just have to attach the outer layer and the lining layer and hem the thing#for the helmet im trying to find larger brads that might work to add a rotating visor#idk how to get it to stay shut though. will probably have to adjust the angle so it doesnt keep getting stuck on my nose#and so i can actually wear glasses with it and not fall down every single set of stairs like last time i wore it#anyone know if there are like. sewing patterns but for 14th century helmets?#armor wise i might actually go with the slipper top for pauldrons#would probably be decently padded#gambeson means i need to learn how to sew shirts#so maybe thatll be a few years down the line#for the shield i have one custom heraldry and one feanorian heraldry. maybe ill make two shields idk#the cuirass is going to be harder - maybe alternate a few layers of cardboard and quilted fabric? would that get too thick tho#ive tested cardboard + heavy waffle blanket gambeson and that works pretty well so maybe just go with that#maybe a cheap bookboard layer for the top?#idk how well you can paint book board though. will have to run some experiments

DIRK: Absolutely god damn incredible.
He’s leaning forward, laughing, dimples carved into his freckled cheeks. There’s a small twist in your heart about it, and you can’t place why.
it's been four years and i still get so emotional about pesterquest
(non edited version + closeups under the cut)
#hi back down the dirk strider pit#and since this was a big piece it's another of me testing out some new art stuff - in this case painting on a single layer#(it didn't end up being exactly one layer bc shadows/background foreground layering/etc)#(but everything is painted on the same layer as its lineart! so it was a fun challenge i've never done before)#in other news the audio engineer in me getting so hung up on making the tiny details on the sound board believable#she totally misses that's not how cinderblocks go#shhhh its fine#my art#homestuck#dirk strider#pesterquest#mspa reader

i think what's really getting me about kozma claiming to have blown up the moon and also claiming to "be" the breach and basically equating "breach collaborators" and "my allies" in the same speech is that. the breach operative we've known since season one, the person who "is" the breach as far the story's concerned, is saskia. and midst is saskia's HOME! she built the black candle with her own two hands (metaphorically, at the very least), she LOVES it there and she loves those people :( and if we take kozma's story at face value, she just threw the "centerpoint" (according to imelda) of her own operation entirely under the bus and endangered the lives not only of innocent people but also of a bunch of her own operatives without their knowledge just to destabilize the trust and frankly that makes me kind of hope she IS telling the truth simply because that's the kind of betrayal i find absolutely delicious,
#midst spoilers#midst#midst podcast#i DO think she's probably bluffing about all or most of it. i bet she was collaborating with the breach but not as closely or with as much#authority as she just claimed and i no longer think she blew up the moon#but MAN those claims leave a nasty taste in my mouth for the exact reasons outlined above.#and it certainly COULD make sense! it's a smart move to encourage/fund/organize an insurrectionary movement within your political rival!#and easy to sacrifice them--especially when it's not even all of them and you've got bigger plans now--to make an even bolder move!#she's a collector! she can move her pieces around the board!#and the scheming of it all only makes her threats have more credibility to the upper trustees she's threatening#except of course that hieronymous is sitting right there having the full perspective & caring about the breach and about saskia specificall#just one more crazy layer to what must have been going through his head during that dinner#frankly. WEEPE has the full perspective too although whether he cares about any of it remains to be seen#i do think kozma is probably going to get killed by the trust/weepe pretty quickly here. but i would LIKE for saskia to get to confront her#if kozma IS telling the truth#it's nuts even WITHOUT the breach component considering she OWNED midst until literally last week. ma'am those were YOUR people.#like to be very clear blowing up that moon was a callous and fucked up thing to do regardless of personal connection. whoever did it.#but the closer the relationship gets the crazier it feels as a thing to do or to claim to have done#i just think saskia deserves revenge or justice on SOMEONE for her home being used as a piece in this stupid game...

learned a new technique for intaglio printmaking in school recently! did a quick print based off that drawing i did of the man who is definitely Not Made Of Fish from that dream I had once LOL
#art#traditional art#intaglio#printmaking#oc art#ocs#oc: unnamed#oc: unsorted#etching#sorta. we werent etching the actual metal with my best friend ferric cloride BUT instead using light and substances to eat away at#the photosensitive film u use for making like circuit boards and stuff. or at least i used it in highschool to make circuit boards#i used to hate intaglio with all my heart because the first time i was taught it the technique was too messing#like the teacher who taught me used a LOT of ink which then all had to be so carefully and painstakingly wiped off#but i recently discovered that since im like the opposite of heavy handed. im lighthanded#i dont have to use nearly as much ink like i can put the thinnest layer on earth just scraping enough into the crevices#and take like 3 seconds polishing it off and we're good hJJHFDksDJF#u can see i kinda missed a spot in the bottom left. it was the bottom right of the plate i was using LOL but im practicing!#now its a lot more fun and i like it way more! hee hee hee

It's not the best picture (had to up the contrast like crazy to pick up any colors, so imagine the colors of the second picture and the clouds of the first) but the sunset was beautiful today. Tried to make a batt that looked a little like it but in the end got a bit carried away with the silk.
It's mostly an unidentified pink longwool, various colors of dyed ryå lambswool, mohair, and silk. Theres also a bit of what i assume is merino and some of the gray southdown that i just recieved in the mail. I intended to just pull it off as punis, but I got one and it was almost impossible to remove from the sticks, so i just pulled it off as a batt after that.
The puni (forgot to use flash) as i pulled it off, and then once drafted out a bit into a spinnable form. The colors and shine of the second one are much more accurate to life.
Eta: have been spinning the puni on a supported spindle and am here to report it is an absolute misery to spin in that it involves lots of pulling really hard to draft. I think it might be better on my wheel where i have more space (rly long staple length + supported spindle where my hands are never more than 6 inches apart while spinning = no draft. only pull.)
#spinning#wool batt#all the wool was layered on from combed top#including the mohair which is a Pain In The Ass to make btw#and then lots and lots of silk and silk noil#its not very easy to spin (at least as a puni) but it sure is interesting#blending board#hand combed top

Me: Talks about the significance and intimacy (not automatically romantic, folks, but also there's an inherent romanticism) of hands, and touch and who you let into that space of comfort. Pinterest: Did you say hands? Here, we've adjusted your home feed you so that you. cannot. possibly. escape. them. you're. welcome. Me: I just wanted— what did I want, again?

Hey, are you a broke motherfucker trying to save money on groceries and attempting to plan for having food in the house at the end of the month? Do you have a good system for storing frozen meat? If you don't, here's how I do it:
Large Bastard called me when I was at the plasma center (we're broke motherfuckers!) to tell me that Aldi had nearly expired pork chops (use or freeze by tomorrow) for 50% off, so I told him to get 4 packs.
I keep my freezer pretty full with homemade stock, frozen meat, frozen veggies, frozen fruit, and g-free bread, so I can't just stick the big packages of pork chops directly in the freezer, and besides if I do, the pork chops will freeze to each other and then I'll have to thaw the whole mass of them if i want to cook them, which will increase thawing time.
So what I do instead is make an accordion of waxed paper and fill it with pork chops.
This ends up saving a ton of space, and means I can choose to thaw 8 pieces or 1 piece or however much I need at a time.
3 packs stored this way are smaller than 1 pack from the store.
The final accordion of meat gets wrapped in a layer of waxed paper, then put into a freezer bag with the air pressed out, and now if I don't have cash for groceries I've still got something to eat.
This is also the way that I save meat that is close to its spoilage date that I won't be able to cook before it goes bad. If you stick a family pack of chicken breasts in the freezer, you have a family pack of chicken breasts to thaw. If you put them into little waxed paper envelopes, you've got single serving packets that you can easily toss into a soup or bake from frozen.
This is ALSO pretty much the technique I use to freeze banana slices when my bananas are going brown and I'm not in the mood to bake, only I freeze them on a cutting board before breaking them off and sticking them in a bag when they're frozen.
Freeze wet stuff in individual pieces, not big chunks, so you don't have to break up big chunks to use your frozen food.
I know this probably seems pretty obvious to a lot of people, but it wasn't obvious to me until a couple years ago because nobody ever showed me how to do it and I didn't grow up in a family that cooked a lot.

NOW we're in BUSINESS!
#original#block puzzle equipment game#rotation: complete. falling off the grid: fixed#next on the list is putting a selection screen to pick equipment and add/remove gems#and as part of that i'll need to make more equipment and gems#which is good because it's kinda sadistic that i've set it up to be impossible to fit either of these gems on this board even with rotation#there's ALMOST a spot to put the red one but it just barely doesn't fit#and besides i reworked the equipment mechanics so this layout isn't even possible anymore#i had planned to let the player rotate equipment but that would add WAY too many options with no real substance#so in order to try optimally fitting your gems you'd have to check every possible placement and rotation of equipment#if this were an actual puzzle game then maybe but. no#the point is to make builds. shuffling around the same 4 pieces of equipment doesn't contribute to that#so i've decided that equipment can't be moved or rotated. there's now 4 equipment types that each have a dedicated corner#weapons in top-left armor in bottom-left accessory in bottom-right and sidearm in top-right#this way you pick out the equipment you want and then you just focus on shuffling around the gems to fit#having SOME options to explore how you can fit in gems is good but moving equipment is an entire huge extra layer. too much#probably. i think. i obviously haven't played the game yet so i don't actually know#but also the controls for moving and rotating equipment would be hell to make so i'm happy to drop them regardless

Really good Twitter thread originally about Elon Musk and Twitter, but also applies to Netflix and a lot of other corporations.
Full thread. Text transcription under cut.
John Bull @garius
One of the things I occasionally get paid to do by companies/execs is to tell them why everything seemed to SUDDENLY go wrong, and subs/readers dropped like a stone. So, with everything going on at Twitter rn, time for a thread about the Trust Thermocline /1
So: what's a thermocline?
Well large bodies of water are made of layers of differing temperatures. Like a layer cake. The top bit is where all the the waves happen and has a gradually decreasing temperature. Then SUDDENLY there's a point where it gets super-cold.
That suddenly is important. There's reasons for it (Science!) but it's just a good metaphor. Indeed you may also be interested in the "Thermocline of Truth" which a project management term for how things on a RAG board all suddenly go from amber to red.
But I digress. The Trust Thermocline is something that, over (many) years of digital, I have seen both digital and regular content publishers hit time and time again. Despite warnings (at least when I've worked there). And it has a similar effect. You have lots of users then suddenly... nope. And this does effect print publications as much as trendy digital media companies. They'll be flying along making loads of money, with lots of users/readers, rolling out new products that get bought. Or events. Or Sub-brands.
And then SUDDENLY those people just abandon them. Often it's not even to "new" competitor products, but stuff they thought were already not a threat. Nor is there lots of obvious dissatisfaction reported from sales and marketing (other than general grumbling). Nor is it a general drift away, it's just a sudden big slide. So why does this happen? As I explain to these people and places, it's because they breached the Trust Thermocline.
I ask them if they'd been increasing prices. Changed service offerings. Modified the product.
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid" Then I ask if they did that the year before. Did they increase prices last year? Change the offering? Modify the product?
Again: "yes, but not much."
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid." "And the year before?"
"Yes but not much. And everyone still paid."
Well, you get the idea. And here is where the Trust Thermocline kicks in. Because too many people see service use as always following an arc. They think that as long as usage is ticking up, they can do what they like to cost and product.
And (critically) that they can just react when the curve flattens But with a lot of CONTENT products (inc social media) that's not actually how it works. Because it doesn't account for sunk-cost lock-in.
Users and readers will stick to what they know, and use, well beyond the point where they START to lose trust in it. And you won't see that. But they'll only MOVE when they hit the Trust Thermocline. The point where their lack of trust in the product to meet their needs, and the emotional investment they'd made in it, have finally been outweighed by the physical and emotional effort required to abandon it. At this point, I normally get asked something like:
"So if we undo the last few changes and drop the price, we get them back?"
And then I have to break the news that nope: that's not how it works.
Because you're past the Thermocline now. You can't make them trust you again.
