Don't call or text; you want to leave as minimal a traceable digital footprint as possible and cellphones are extremely traceable. The Trump admin is committed to collecting metadata from journalists who receive leaks and that includes call history and who sent text messages; even if the message gets deleted there is a record of it with the carrier that can be subpoenaed.

If you are going to email, do so from a burner account created for the purpose of leaking/whistleblowing. (my advice: use a service like protonmail that allows you to encrypt messages and doesn't collect any data beyond what is absolutely necessary for an email system to function; email is inherently insecure you have to treat it as insecure, but a burner account at a privacy-focused company like proton that facilitates sending encrypted messages is the best option for email; here's some information about how to use protonmail as privately as possible) When setting up your burner email, do not use your phone number for 2FA or include any accurate biographical information during the account setup. Set up the account while using a traffic anonymizer like Tor. Here's a PDF about what Tor is and how it works and here's the Tor project's manual explaining how to install and configure the browser for privacy. (The article advises to use Tor or a VPN but that raises the question of whether you trust your VPN provider; if you are going to use a VPN use one of the ones recommended by privacyguides; I know fuck all about VPNs but I know I wouldn't trust most VPN providers in this context).

Don't reach out to the person you're leaking to on social media. I feel like this should be obvious, but it may not be - don't reach out through meta or X or tumblr, these are not anonymous platforms and they can and will be compelled to share messages sent to journalists or data sent from your account. Don't follow the people you're leaking to (unless you already happened to be following them), don't interact with their posts. Do not make any kind of visible connection between you and the person you are leaking to.

Be careful about using encrypted messaging platforms. I personally wouldn't trust telegram or whatsapp, and I haven't heard of Session until now, but generally speaking Signal is one of your safest bets for sending messages. Signal collects the smallest amount of user data it can, and while it does require a phone number to sign up, the phone number doesn't have to stay connected to your username. If you don't already have a signal account, create one NOW because one of the things that they do track and can be compelled to disclose is when an account was created. If an account is linked to you and it was created shortly before a leak, that's suspicious. Create an account now and have it handy for when you need it. IF you are using signal, be aware that people can still screencap your messages; don't share personally identifying data via signal chats.

Have good opsec about how you collect the data that you're going to leak. For example, don't email yourself a copy of the data from your work email account, take photos of the data on a non-work phone and then strip the metadata. If you require login access to get the info you're looking to leak, figure out if there's a way that you can make the leak more ambiguous about the access by making sure there's time between your access and the leak, or that the time of your access isn't included in the information that is leaked. Take a lot of time to think about how someone might track a leak back to you and take steps to mitigate that.

Don't save copies of the data that you've leaked; once you've passed the message on to people who can get it out there, destroy any copies that you had.

GlobaLeaks and SecureDrop are tools to securely share leaks with organizations that will publicize the information you're sharing while protecting you to the best of their ability. Do not access those sites through your normal browser when you are preparing to leak data, only access them through Tor.

Be cautious about who you leak to. (Look I love the team at It Could Happen Here but you don't share a leak with a podcaster you share a leak with a group like Distributed Denial of Secrets). Focus on groups that have a history of securely sharing leaked info and on outlets that might have some legal protection from sharing information about you. The Intercept and DDoSecrets are the two that spring to mind immediately for me. (In fact I got the screenshot at the top of this thread because I went searching for this intercept article to paste on to a reply to another post but then this happened so here we are). Both of those links have their tips for leakers, btw.

It isn't stated elsewhere here so I'll add it at the end: if you are using Tor, don't log in to personal accounts that are associated with your real name or your private data. If you create burner accounts, don't use them to communicate with accounts associated with your real name or private data.

Also don't tell people - partners, parents, friends, etc. - that you're going to leak something.

And, I cannot emphasize this enough, do not tell me or any other tumblr user if you have data you are thinking about leaking or a hack you think you've pulled off. Don't talk about doing crime on the internet and definitely don't talk to me about it. Don't send an anonymous ask, don't send a private message. "The hacker or hacker-adjacent person I parasocially know from tumblr" is not a safe recipient for your leak and tumblr is not a secure or anonymous platform EVER.

You make a post, add the usual tags like ‘my art’, ‘artists on tumblr’, ‘digital art’, or event just ‘art’ in general. Then you hit post and watch it see how much attention your hard work will get. Maybe you even did a commission and your commissions are open so you may have even added ‘commissions open’ as an extra tag. Now you wait. Surely it’ll take forever to get any interest…But! Then you see it! A comment asking you if your commissions are open. It’s done within seconds of the post being made. What luck! You do have commissions open so you DM them because they asked you to.

Once you message the account they will then tell you they want you to draw their pet or a family member such as their son. But they won’t take any offered payment methods that you have listed in your commissions post that they saw. Instead, they will ask you what your email address is so they can send you the money that way. Might seem odd but they claim they just have issues with using the links you offer. But they promise a high payment for this simple commission so you give them your email address and wait for the payment to come through. Unfortunately something goes wrong. There’s a new email from ‘PayPal’ but it’s claiming there’s been a little problem crediting your account and that you need to pay to upgrade it in order to receive the payment. So you do as stated but somehow this isn’t enough. Now you don’t have money, you lost some money too, and the account you messaged is threatening to get the local law enforcement after you if you can’t send them the money back. You get scared and start to panic. So you keep sending money and more money but nothings happening. However, if you calm down and pay attention you’ll likely notice the real issue.

When posting art always keep an eye out for these kind of spam bots. They’ll comment asking you to DM them or comment asking you to DM them if commissions are open. You will eventually notice the repetitive comments across multiple posts they like too. Do not contact these accounts and instead block them and alert other artists about them.

oh my dear i totally get that <3 ive abandoned and remade and/or straight up been banned more times than i can count over the years at this point. one thing i make a point to practice is to heavily compartmentalize, i keep my account here a completely separate account from my main or any other tumblr, only log in when i want to, etc. -- im not sure about other browsers but on firefox there's a thing called container tabs where that tab keeps its own completely separate cookies/history and nothing is saved to your main browser history. so you can open and close it whenever you want! it feels good to have that level of control where you never have to see this place, never have to even acknowledge your posts or see your notifications, ignore DMs etc, unless you specifically seek it out. you can just close the tab and poof! forget about it. i do like that i can go away for days or weeks at a time when im not feeling it or this kink just isnt doing it for me so much and it really just reinforces that I'm in control here, im allowed to take breaks, allowed to come back, without apology. plus if you do feel bad or like youre wasting time on here u can just delete the container tab and thatll delete your history! so whenever you want to come back you'd be able to, just having to go through the hassle of looking up your burner email and password (i have it saved separately in a text file somewhere on my home folder, its not saved to my browser) so you wont feel like youve done something too drastic if you do feel like coming back after a long time

Now, before we proceed with more evidence I want you to read this post from the perspective of someone who has dealt with scammers frequently in their day to day life.

Tumblr is a community of mainly young and vulnerable people who unfortunately fall for scams because they do not know better. Take it from someone who is older and went through those games lots of times.

Manipulative suicide threats are often used by toxic people to deflect accountability and emotionally blackmail others. That is abusive behaviour and it's important to name that.

Tumblr has a history of users weaponizing mental health to gain sympathy or derail consequences, most people will take what scammers say at face value. I do not personally fault those people, however, let's name this for what it is: emotional manipulation, suicide baiting, pointing fingers, avoiding accountability and gaslighting.

I didn’t want to have to share this, but I need to. Because people deserve to know the full extent of @vamptarot’s behaviour.

After I exposed her repeated scamming, lies, and mistreatment of paying clients, she dm'd me, not to apologize, not to clarify, but to threaten to end her life if I didn’t stop holding her accountable.

I want to make something very clear: - I take mental health seriously. - I do not wish harm on anyone. - But using suicide threats as a shield to avoid responsibility is abusive. Full stop.

This wasn’t a vulnerable cry for help. It was a weapon. A way to silence me and shift blame onto me. As if I caused this by TELLING THE TRUTH.

She told me I was “ruining her life.” No. What ruined her reputation was her own behaviour:

Lying to clients for months

Refusing to give refunds

Not sending readings people paid for and ghosting them

Gaslighting and guilt tripping people who asked for updates and proof

Using tragedy after tragedy to stall, deflect, and avoid consequences

That’s on her. Not me. Not the other people she scammed. And not the truth.

I’ll be sharing the screenshots so you can see exactly what was said because people deserve to know how far this manipulation goes. Approach this with a very stern mind.

i think as a modern day kaylor it’s really important (and freeing) to recognize the uniqueness of our viewpoint and how you’re bound to see swifties and gaylors alike making fun of kaylors and its kind of unavoidable. but i don’t think that a lot of the making fun comes from an honest review of events or history or possibilities, it’s mostly just people online being cliquey and finding people to make fun of because that’s how people get their kicks. and to your point about gaylors and empathy, i think it’s just that to them kaylor represents something different to them than what it actually is and so a lot of them don’t think the actual ideas through for themselves. it has all become a sort of identity politics. and also the eternal quest of Never Being Wrong. i think it was worse a few years ago compared to now but.. so yeah, please save your energy when it comes to this!

if i think about it, i do think (and i have often said) it would be beneficial to us as kaylors to hold a little more space for humor for our own plight. we can make a lot of the same jokes these people do and laugh at the absurdity of the situation while still understanding and seeing what we do and caring about it like we do. and we don’t need to convince anyone who frankly don’t seem too fun to hang out with anyway. isn’t it enough just to understand it ourselves? to think for ourselves and celebrate with people who came to the same conclusion? sure it’s not the ideal setup, it’d be a more fun world if we could all be more forthcoming and not get bonked on the head for it but… there’s good to come out of being lowkey, too.

i do think that more public facing forums like twitter can more easily reveal the meanness of people, and anything people say, both them or you, really does spread far and fast and out of your circle, both to people on an opposing side but also like, everyday people. i think with tumblr it is a little easier to customize your experience and i would recommend it to any kaylors out there who experience fatigue with other social platforms. you can remove anons and just accept questions from accounts, you can more reliably block people, block whole IP addresses, you can block keywords from posts so that if the word appears on your feed you can choose whether or not to read the post, there are ways to curate what kind of stuff you follow etc. i think that while tumblr is more insular, it’s also more quiet and less hectic, which is good especially given the season of life that kaylor is going through. good for both us and kaylor. like, i think a lot of things are better off not being pointed out or spread around to the point of convincing everyone, you know what i mean? i could write up a list of specific things and points in time and lyrics and objects and such and such that would refute the thing you mentioned in your anon about gaylors saying, but, i dunno, i’m not positive that it’s something that ought to be compiled? especially if it’s going to be transferred from here to twitter. sometimes i try to hold back. don’t get me wrong it’s fun running into myself on other platforms, i love the notoriety, but it does make me think about how far i want my thoughts to go, sometimes 😆 so i try to pick and choose on the assumption it’ll get somewhere else. in other words i think that as modern day kaylors, keeping a certain level of volume or restraint is a way for us to exercise empathy for kaylor, too.

this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣

so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.

what a lovely late-impressionist piece blended with evocative leyendecker-esque themes! why haven't you ever heard of this artist before? surely tumblr would be all over an artist like this. who is justin brown?

your two options from here are to do a search for the name, or a reverse image search. i prefer reverse image searching, particularly when it comes to a common name like "justin brown". so what does that net?

Immediately, without looking at any text, something is wrong: it barely exists. an actual historical piece would turn up numerous results from websites individually discussing the piece, but no such discussions are taking place. Looking at the text, though, does show the source-- and at least in this case, the creator was honest about their medium.

But let's also look at the "exact matches", in case a source doesn't make itself apparent in the initial sidebar results like this.

This section will often tell you post dates of images, and here it can be seen that the very first iteration of the image was posted 15 days ago. It did not exist online prior to that.

Seeing how long an unsourced image has been floating around is a skill applicable to more than just generative images! See a cool image of an artifact or other intriguing item with a vivid caption? Reverse search it! If all the results are paired with that caption and only go back a few months, you might just have viral facebook spam.

Sometimes generative creators are dishonest about their medium and do not tag it like in the example, so that's when establishing "jpeg provenance" becomes important. While it can be a little trickier to determine if someone is using generative images and not admitting to it if they aren't trying to pass it off as a classic, something to consider is the age of their account and the frequency with which they post. Here are some account red flags:

-Did they only start posting art after 2022, or if they did before, did their style/skill level WILDLY change? Not gradual improvement-- I'm talking amateur graphite portraits straight into complex digital renders. Everyone starts somewhere, newness is not a red flag alone; it's newness combined with existing in a vacuum away from any community.

-Do they post fully-finished paintings several times a week? -Do many of these paintings seem iterative of a similar theme or subject matter ("three well-dressed young men face each other under shade and dappled sunlight")?

-Does their style change in inconsistent ways? An artist that can swap between painting like Drew Struzan and Hokusai should be pretty well known, right? Why is no one hyping this guy?!

-Do they have social media besides the source instagram? If so, what are they posting about? Are there any WIPs? Doodles? Interactions with other artists? Gallery dates? 3am self-doubt posts? Or is it all self-promo? Crypto? Seemingly nothing art-related at all for someone pushing out 3 weekly paintings?

Basically, if it's important to you to omit this stuff when you curate, please don't just smash reblog if the source doesn't seem to be the OP themselves. Seeking out sources was important even before this became an issue, now it is more than ever.
