Hi and welcome to my professional analysis on whether the hypmic men could survive rios bootcamp. All the statements on this are facts and cannot be simply disagreed upon without proof. The assessment to each individual ranking can be found under

Rio - that's rio. easy

Ichiro - I think running around ikebukuro doing errands gives him some pretty good stamina AND strength to get through it all, could do it no problem and would possibly have fun doing it which is an added bonus for doing well

Kuko - Monk training gives him good strength and stamina to do it! Even if he couldn't do something, I feel like kuko would somehow end up doing it out of sheer spite due to others doubting him

Dice - Dice gets through so much shit I think he'd do it no problem only to die AFTER it's all done if this makes sense. Plus he does hang out with Rio so this man should have some training under his belt

Hitoya - special clause for this old man. I would put him with jakurai and rei BUT. You have to consider he deals with kuko and jyushi on basically a daily basis. Kuko alone probably gives this man strength to do it if we are being honest

Samatoki - could do it. Samatoki is pretty strong and all but I don't think this man could go through the pushups for long when we consider the state of his lungs. He has the strength but I don't think he has the proper stamina for it, however, he'd do it and just act like it's nothing

Ramuda - don't be fooled by the cute face. Ramudas high energy comes into play here and helps a lot, especially with stamina, even if the strength is lower than others. It also, however, depends highly on this thing WANTING to do the boot camp or not, which has a high chance of not wanting to unless necessary and, even if doing it, ramuda would whine throughout it.

Jiro - Ichiros brother, also doing shit around ikebukuro. The fact he's good at sports also helps a lot here! He'd do pretty well, however, even with the stamina being here, I don't think his strength is at the levels of the ones above to put him there

Hifumi - would rush through it and do it easily if only to check onto doppo who's currently dying on the floor, so it would take some small time. Gigolo would do it well but only if there are women around to impress them so it's a highly dependant case

Rosho - current maths teacher ex bad boy or whatever the shit. due to his age he has some difficulties surely BUT the strength from his past absolutely is still around. The main problem would be stamina

Jyushi - you need to scare them before and then they'd be rushing through everything to get it done quickly. Also highly dependant on if the vkei clothes are actually there or not, if they are, they're passing out almost immediately due to heat

Doppo - i don't think this man knows what an exercise is, you could easily fold him in half. Lives his life in an office and getting home just cries himself to sleep like the average office worker in Japan. F.

Gentaro - Oya do you really think I could not do this Daisu ufufu ^-^ immediately falls to the floor and passes out. Look at the way this man dresses. Another case of heatstroke in this cast. Even if he was wearing lighter clothes he's a writer and reader, does not even know what an exercise is meant to look like. Would instead pull a book out of nowhere and read while the others go through the bootcamp

Saburo - 14 years old hacker who absolutely stays up late doing tech stuff. Do I need to say more.

Sasara - he'd do one push up and a silly goofyass sound effect like point would play. It means his spine broke.

Jyuto - cop + look at the way he's built

Jakurai - he is healthy, don't get me wrong! However his old man bones aren't meant for this anymore!!!!!! Just let him rest. While the others are doing the push-ups just let him go to these public elder academy places

Rei - dies in 13 seconds max.

Slug i admire you as a translator but i feel youre becoming way more biased over time. The way you talk about Hifumi is unprofessional, and you change so much in your work. it’s a glaring issue. It became clear during Positive Is My Life, as you have done nothing but directly change the lyrics to his song— change the meaning of his words, and change everything down to his opinions of Honobono. YOU have translated Hifumi actively saying he is against the idea of forgiving Honobono and just wants to understand her, but now you’re pushing a weird idea of him forgiving her that is nowhere near intended? He didn’t say he wants to be her friend, he said that he IS her friend. That is directly what he said. in the nicest way possible, I feel like you’re missing alot of social cues when it comes to Hifumi. Hifumi being effeminate(Read; Effeminate. Not Feminine, as not being masculine doesn’t make you feminine. The definition of effeminate is “having characteristics and ways of behaving traditionally associated with women and regarded as inappropriate for a man”.) is a key part of him as a character. I understand you resonate with him as a cisgender man, but he has literally taken upon himself a more traditionally feminine role IN the Side F.P & M Bonus Drama Track 1 . He actively took upon himself in the Doppo & Hifumi Karaoke duet the role of “Woman/Wife”. I think you actively putting your bias into him is a big issue that needs to be fixed. It’s completely okay if you don’t personally like that he is effeminate, but you are not an official writer. You are a manga only translator. One of the key parts of HypMic is the way things are said, and it feels as if you are actively weaponizing the fact you are a trusted translator and Manga-Onlyer to push an agenda about Hifumi. Your personal interpretation of Hifumi is not relevant, as he is not your character and this is not your manga nor your series. Hifumi expresses very non traditionally masculine ideals with the way he talks/dresses himself/carries himself— as a key part of him and Doppo as characters is not fitting the societal norm, especially with their relationship. Nothing about Hifumi is traditional. If you try to change Hifumi’s effeminate behavior, you strip Hifumi of his personality, and I fear that’s whats happening. This is for the sake of the amount of people I have seen make complaints as I understand it can be stressful, as you are a busy person— but please. Do better, and try to take less creative liberties. You are not an official translator, nor an official writer, nor an official anything, so you have to understand you cannot speak on these characters as your own. Everything you see for them are just personal interpretations and headcanons coming from someone who has not consumed all possible content. It doesn’t make sense to be translating something like a song, as you aren’t equipped for that, and not even in a rude way. You’re good at manga translation, and that’s okay. You just need to think inside the box a bit more, as for HypMic— you barely even know what’s inside said box.

Not to mention, bringing up misogyny for his line about wanting to do the Princess Playstyle in games (not exclusive to japan, fyi. people do it in the states all the time.) was gross to me, as a woman myself. That was nowhere near anyway it could be intended by any sane individual, especially if you’ve actually perceived the lyrics in Japanese— so to say that, while not even being a woman is… Gross. It comes off bad, and the only personally who really saw it that way was you, since everyone else I’ve seen talk about that line when properly translated by Takumi (I think that was the translators name? my apologies. I am better at formal spanish.) just perceived it as cute, which was the goal of the line, and you can tell. Again, apologies if I can’t articulate well, as I’m more used to speaking formally in spanish than english.

(regarding ur response to an ask about assasin jakurai, tw for slight mention of killing) wasnt there a BAT chapter about hitoya and jakurai's past together when jakurai briefly considered murdering the dude who bullied hitoya's brother? it would be weird of the hypmic writing team to have added that in with jakurai's assasin past being retconned, unless they wrote that before they decided to remove it

His bio says “He is a genius doctor, once under contract to eliminate terrorists…” I know exactly which chapter you’re talking about! I think the only way it works is if that was a reference to when Jakurai was a war doctor and he was an ‘assassin’ that was part of a military team that eliminated terrorists for the 3 years he was there.

Rant under the cut because I got weirdly passionate about this 😅

Maybe I’m wrong, maybe he’s still technically an assassin, but the way they made it seem in the FP/M manga vs the new FP/M+ is totally different which is what throws me off. The old one made it seem like he was a well known literal assassin for many years. Maybe the assassin part is still canon but now it’s just not being focused on as much in favor of his redemption?

@hypmic-theories-and-rants did a cool breakdown of Jakurai right here and it makes the most sense. The main problem is that since this post, FP/M+ manga has shown us that Jakurai went off to be a war doctor at age 20, BEFORE he finished his undergrad. This means that when he came back he had to complete not only his undergraduate, but also his PhD and his residency. Med School is insanely difficult to do when it’s the only thing your focusing on but we’re supposed to believe he did an assassin job on top of that??

The new manga also has such a short timeline like did people forget it takes 10+ years to become a doctor? Like even if he had 2 years of undergrad under his belt before leaving for the war (18-20) he came back at 23 and so then he’d take another 2 years to finish undergrad (25) and 4 years for medical school (29) and then let’s say the minimum 3 years of residency (32) even though residency can take up to 7 years. This means Jakurai JUST finished all of his studies right before TDD manga where he’s 33. Even if the war years counted towards his undergrad, that would put him at 30 when he finally gets to practice medicine solo. God forbid he wants to be a specialist that would take another 4 years!

I get he’s a genius but even then, unless he skipped some years which is pretty much impossible because despite your skill level medicine is one of the most rigorous paths that has specific rules and guidelines you need to follow to become certified. It’s silly to think he could become an expert assassin with a 100% kill rate as well as have a reputation of a brilliant doctor when he was in school literally the whole time and doctors work 24-48 hour shifts (unless they’re specialists which we’ve already said would be impossible in this timeline) so how is Jakurai doing both??

Also, please remember that everything on this blog is my own opinion and nothing I say or write is canon lol I can 100% be wrong about things so please don’t ever take my word hypmic lore 😅

Ramuda Amemura

He’s trans.

He has a superiority complex to hide his inferiority complex.

He also likely has a little bot of a god complex… Just a tiny bit… Not to the point it’d endanger his life, but to the point he can never admit he’s wrong (I suppose this can also count as the superiority complex).

He also has a little bit of a schoolboy crush on Dice… that has lasted far longer than he’d ever like to admit – not that he’d ever admit it in the first place – and he gets jealous over Dice.

He started his whole thing with girls, whatever it is, as a power trip, which also explains why he likes to cause so much chaos.

Since he used to smoke, he started candy as a way to stop smoking and it slowly replaced his smoking habit (as I have yet to see him smoke otherwise, but keep in mind I’m not far into the manga and mostly I’m going off the ARB story).

Gentaro Yumeno

All writers are perfectionists (I’d know as one).

He’s probably very particular about the details and doesn’t like doing things without a plan.

He’s the lyric write for Fling Posse’s raps and does not enjoy making up lyrics on the spot; however he can if he must – This is also why he carries the book everywhere.

I honest to god don’t feel like he’s of this world and whatever his actual form is (irony in his rap name?), it scared Ramuda enough to create Fling Posse, so here they are.

Dice Arisugawa

He is, unfortunately, very oblivious to romantic approaches – especially from close friends such as his division members, for he’s been with them for so long that he can never imagine them falling in love with him.

He has abandonment issues/a fear of abandonment because his mother left him.

Speaking of his mother, Dice likely knows how to do “noble” things because he was raised by a politician; i.e. how to play piano and stuff like that.

Adding on top of that, I feel like Dice has an accumulation of many different skills from being all over the place – He learned how to do card tricks by watching others, and he probably learned bird calls from spending time with Rio.

He undoubtedly has ADHD (as a person with ADHD myself, you cannot tell me I am wrong)!

He’s well aware that’s he a leech, but he can’t stop himself because the addiction is stronger and he feels terrible about it; it’s why he often begs instead of anything else that would fit his character more.

He’s a very talkative person and often rambles to get his thoughts organized.

He doesn’t like being put into awkward situations or forced into silence because he is used the buzz of a casino and a busy city.

Relating to the ADHD canon, Dice puts his life on line not only for the thrill of it, but to keep his mind off of thoughts, and it’s also why he gambles; so he can focus on one thing.

He is numb to change because he’s a gambler.

He is very good at adapting to a new environment.

He doesn’t like being looked down up and that’s why he started gambling; to prove that he’s worth something.

He uses humor to cope if he can’t get his mind off of things with the thrill of gambling.

Extras (Fling Posse all together)

Dice has weird limbs, so clothing fits him weird, and Ramuda started making clothes for them because of that.

Ramuda chased after Dice after he stole his signature parka and the Fling Posse star was embroidered on later by Ramuda after the formation of Fling Posse.

Ramuda likely pulls whatever strings he has access to to make life easier for his division members (not that it stops them from getting into trouble, that is).

Gentaro spends a lot of time away when writing and likely forgets he’s even alive during those periods, so his division members make sure he’s still taking care of himself when he gets like that.

They all piss each other off, but in a platonic love kind of way.

Jakurai Jingui

Oh, my poor man’s so tired. He just needs a long break and a spa day; speaking of this, he likely doesn’t ask for help often – it’s the messiah complex he undoubtedly has.

His hair is too long for him to be taking care of it himself, and it definitely looks in fantastic condition, so he definitely takes good care of it – I just don’t think he takes care of it himself; I think he enlists the help of his division members (as I headcanon that Matenrou is in a poly relationship).

Jakurai’s matureness can sometimes get in the way of other things, such as emotional moments, and he can come off as cold or distant when he doesn’t mean to come off that way.

Unlike the other divisions, Jakurai wanted to really separate from his past, and that’s why he named his division Matenrou instead of reusing something from the past. He also probably doesn’t like talking about the past.

His hair is naturally silver, but the lighter shades that are nearly white underneath was caused by stress.

He gets cold quickly, which is why he always keeps the lab coat on, and it’s also why he wears a turtleneck.

Jakurai does live in the same apartment as Doppo and Hifumi, but he’s always so busy that he often can’t get there, so he ends up sleeping at the hospital; he also has a separate apartment of his own that’s closer to the hospital if he has free time, but he’s not off work/off work but still on call.

Doppo Kannonzaka

Man, the first thing I thought when I saw him was that he has a choking kink. Enough said. He also likely has a praise kink.

If he didn’t have social anxiety and wasn’t so busy, he’d also probably be going over to Rio’s camp a lot. I think it’s because he’s so overworked that he doesn’t care about what’s in the food; as long as he gets it.

He’s probably passed out from exhaustion more than once and just got used to it.

Despite all his problems, he definitely wants to be known and he wants his name out there; he wants to be just like the other two and he definitely looks up to them already, but he aspires to be them.

He is so thankful for his divison members and he’s glad that they accepted him.

Hifumi Izanami

Hifumi is a classic case of “fake it till you make it”; I really don’t know how he became one of the most popular hosts in Shinjuku, but it’s definitely about the fake confidence and the jacket is a comfort object for him that allows him to have that confidence.

He cooks all the time for his division members and he uses the catches from fish all the time, too. He even brings the lunches to their works for them.

Extras

Since Hifumi’s always out so late, the others make sure he has everything he needs for whenever he wakes up and sometimes they wait for him.

They’re all in a poly relationship and I refuse to believe anything else; I mean, have you seen those “my room” dialouge in ARB? Fruity.

They probably all love to cuddle whenever they get the chance because they can’t do it often.

They definitely set up one day of the month for all of them to just be together.

Ichiro Yamada

This may just be the Ichiro simp in me, but I think he has a very nice tummy that’d be nice to lay on; like a soft one if that makes any sense to anybody other than me.

He’s a very friendly person and if you’re close friends with him, he’s definitely loyal; he’d be willing to drop anything to help you kind of loyal, like he is to his brothers – all that, except the willing to die part.

I think he gets flustered easily and doesn’t know how to respond to compliments. That’s also probably the Ichiro simp in me.

Although he has to stop his brothers from ripping out each other’s throats all the time, he’s very proud of them and of their achievements, no matter what they are. He’s willing to praise them even for the tiniest things to make up for his absence in their lives.

He probably has a terrible sleeping schedule, but he could probably operate on pretty much anything. Two hours of sleep? That’s not an issue for him; he’s used to it.

He’s likely a cheapskate when it comes to himself, but when it comes to his brothers, he spares no expense if he can.

Saburo Yamada

He has a superiority complex. I mean, just look at how he acts with Jiro – that’s enough proof right there.

He got into hacking and all of that computer stuff because it was interesting to him; he’s probably pursuing a career in it, considering just how good he is at it. I feel like he’d make a good white hat hacker that tests your website security, like Alma in Va-11 Hall-A.

Call him a library, because he holds grudges for years.

I think he just likes picking arguments because he think it’s funny and there’s nothing better to do when you’re stuck with your brothers (as somebody with a sibling myself, I can attest to that).

Jiro Yamada

Anger issues. Yep, that’s it. That’s the headcanon.

Man probably goes dumpster diving to see what kind of treasures he can find; his room is probably full of that kind of junk.

He probably has greasy hair. It doesn’t matter how much he cleans it, it’s just greasy (as somebody with the same issue, go clean your pillows Jiro).

Ichiro has to hold Jiro back from just punching Saburo all the time.

God, somebody save Ichiro from his siblings; with how much they bicker, he probably has taken so much ibuprofen to stop headaches in his life that he should be considered dead from an overdose.

Despite being assholes to each other, they all help each other out – Saburo helps Jiro with his work, Jiro helps Saburo with whatever he can’t do, and Ichiro takes care of the rest. It’s the only thing keeping their bond together.

Rio Mason Busujima

Rio’s very stoic and that often doesn’t break, so it’s very rare to see a smile on his face. He has different smiles for different things too – there’s the business one; one so he doesn’t look as intimidating, and the actual genuine smile that’s very rare to see, but it happens when somebody appreciates his food.

Rio’s not good at understanding emotions and it takes him awhile to process emotions; he goes quiet in these moments and it can be confusing for those who don’t know him, but once he’s thought everything out, he’s very smart about responding.

He’ll never fully adjust to a life outside of the navy and military.

Opposite to Dice, he finds the buzz of a city to be too distracting for his thoughts and he enjoys his solitude, but he doesn’t mind company at all.

Due to how his unit was broken up, he refuses to abide by H law and keeps his gun on him. Even Rio can be spiteful. However, he mostly uses it for hunting, which is why he’s so far out in the forest.

He definitely has a lot of scars and that’s why he often wears his fatigues; he doesn’t wana come off as off-putting. His cards without the jacket did him so dirty. Of course he’d have scars from fighting in World War 3.

He can come up with strategies on the spot and is a very quick-thinker when it comes to combat.

Despite how ruthless he is when it comes to rap battles and being an ex-navy, he’s actually a very gentle soul.

I feel like he’s asexual, but homoromantic.

Samatoki Aohitsugi

He only uses the bad guy persona as a way to be left alone, but he’s actually a very kind person.

Despite being a yakuza, he actually abides to the H law and it’s probably only because of Nemu (however, this is only based off of the anime, so I can’t say for certain, but I haven’t seen anything in the manga disproving otherwise yet).

I just feel like he eats a lot throughout the day. I can’t explain this one, but he has the vibes.

He also knows how to cook quite well himself, and he does it for his division members sometimes.

Jyuto Iruma

He’s very cocky because he knows he can get away with things; I mean, he’s the authorties, why wouldn’t he get cocky about what he can do? However, it’s somewhat annoying to Samatoki.

If he wasn’t a gay bastard, Samtoki and Rio probably would’ve been arrested long ago. Thankfully for them, he is a gay bastard.

He likes looking good no matter what; it helps his confidence, so he dresses up to go out anywhere.

His glasses are probably just reading glasses.

He likes spending money on expensive things.

Samatoki and Jyuto are in a relationship. They’re so fruity that I’m sure I don’t have to explain this one.

Samatoki doesn’t approve of Rio dating Dice at all and it’s only because of Jyuto that Dice is still alive.

Rio is pretty much their marriage counselor; he has to constantly deal with them bickering, so of course he is. He’s pretty much the adopted child to save their marriage.

Buster Bros!!!

Ichiro is a bit of a mess, but he's getting better. He used to be pretty bad, working as a debt collector for Mozuku, doing drugs, and drinking, etc., but thanks to his brothers, he's gotten out and gotten clean.

Unfortunately, during that period, his relationship with his son, Rei, turned sour and Rei ran away at a fairly young age. Ichiro has been trying to repair his relationships, especially with Rei, but Rei isn't interested or receptive at all.

Jiro and Saburo live together, Jiro as a PE teacher at a middle school and Saburo as a white hat hacker/computer security stuff.

Jiro and Saburo's relationship with Ichiro isn't the best, but after Ichiro started getting clean and shaping up, their relationship has improved enough to form a team.

Jiro and Saburo are aware of Rei's existence but haven't actually met him before.

Mad Trigger Crew

Not huge changes here, Samatoki still works with the Yakuza, Jyuto is still a cop, and Rio is still Rio.

Jyuto isn't quite as experienced in being a corrupt cop as canon, so Samatoki makes sure to cover for him whenever he stumbles.

Samatoki is a big brother through and through, so he keeps an eye out for both Jyuto and Rio. His relationship with Nemu is okay, though sometimes she thinks he's the dumbest fool in the world.

Rio is more than well-aware that his survival cooking is not for the faint of heart. He finds it hilarious how Samatoki and Jyuto stutter and flinch whenever he brings it up, as well as how easily they falter under his puppy eyes.

Fling Posse

Ramuda deliberately makes sure as little people know his actual age as possible

It's one thing for a 24 year old to act cutesy and call girls "onee-san," it's a whole other thing when it's a 30 year old, no matter how cute and small he is

Ramuda finds Jakurai small and cute, so he sometimes goes and harasses coo over the boy, though, there have been times where the cops have been called for suspected pedophilia.

He's free from all the Project lambda stuff since it got exposed years ago and after a long hospitalization, he's completely healthy. You might even run into another clone occasionally, though they're all split to the four winds, each having chosen to pursue their own dreams.

Gentaro still is a writer, though he usually wears normal clothes. Honestly, he's way too old to continue to wear a kosode and hakama everywhere. It is way too hot out, plus he's not in his 20s anymore, when he thought it was cool and unique.

Dice is Dice. He's a gambler, though he does make sure to keep enough money around for rent and food. He's old enough that he's not so dumb enough to gamble away everything. Plus, he doesn't want to worry his daughter, Otome. She's already pissed at him enough.

Dice and Otome have a fairly good relationship, though that might just have been a result of Dice being an attentive and easygoing parent and never having to live with each other. Otome cares a lot for Dice, though she hates his gambling addiction.

Matenro

Everyone's pretty sure Jakurai is a mob boss or something. There's no way 14 year old should be able to live alone and be financially well off. Jakurai just smiles through everyone's suspicions, and since there's no proof, no one can do anything about it.

Jakurai acts like a literal angel, though, if you anger him, he might actually stab you (*cough* Ramuda *cough*). Jakurai, Hitoya, and Rei are friends, though no one knows how are when, they just are.

During the TDD era, Ramuda, Ichiro, and Samatoki acted a bit like pseudo-parents for him, though nowadays, while they do their best to keep an eye on Jakurai out of a sense of responsibility, Jakurai is content to ignore them.

Doppo and Hifumi are together and happily so. They still tell most people they're just roommates, due to Doppo's lack of confidence, but they're pretty content together.

Hifumi still works at a host club, though he does fumble sometimes from having less experience. Sometimes he doubts himself because he's not as old as his peers at the host club.

Doppo is just as self-deprecating as always, though there's a whole helping of fatalistic humor as well. His favorite way to relieve himself of stress is to hug Jakurai.

Both Hifumi and Doppo love Jakurai and really worry if a 14 year old living alone is okay. They like taking turns hugging and cuddling with the boy and Jakurai is somehow okay with it.

Dotsuitare Honpo

Sasara is in a pretty happy relationship with Rosho. They've moved past their issues in their youth and are now together.

They live separately, though that's mostly because of convenience for their workplace rather than because they want to

They planned to move in together soon, but their plans are put to halt when they meet Rei

Rei is a student at Rosho's school. He's not a bad student, just a bit inattentive and laissez-faire when it comes to others.

Rei helps them out of a bad situation and shows that he's good with a hypnosis microphone, but nopes out of the situation before either Sasara or Rosho can talk to him. He gets caught by Rosho the next day at school though.

Somehow, he gets roped into joining Dotsuitare Honpo, but there's a gleam in his eyes that tell Sasara that he's pretty pleased with the outcome.

When they find out that Rei lives on his own in a really rundown and small apartment, they freak out a bit and then try to make him move in with one of them.

It... kind of works? Rei still works on a near daily basis and insists on paying rent, but at least he's not living in a shitty apartment anymore.

Rei isn't used to people caring for him, having pretty much raised himself, and it shows. Any bout of affection is waved off with a laugh, light teasing, or a strained grin. When Sasara and Rosho find out that his dad is Ichiro, Sasara gets a little bit more than just mad at at his former teammate.

Bad Ass Temple

Kuko is a full-on monk at the temple, having taken over the temple after his father's retirement. He met Jyushi there, who was praying for luck for his next concert.

Kuko has calmed down a lot since being a teenager. There's still bouts of anger sometimes, but he's mostly exasperated, especially at Hitoya. Kuko is super interested in Jyushi, but not sure how to make his intentions clear without startling the other man or inciting Hitoya's ire.

Jyushi is still a sweetheart, though he's not as permanently attached to Amanda as before. He's a very popular idol/music artist, primarily is visual kei, though he does do other things.

Hitoya originally was a homeless kid, though he did occasionally crash at Jakurai's place. His pride wouldn't let him do it too often, scared of becoming too reliant on the other boy or showing himself as weak.

Jyushi met Hitoya when he was in Tokyo for a concert. Somehow, he convinced the boy to come live with him. He took him back to Nagoya and that's where he's lived since.

Hitoya is very, very protective of Jyushi. He thinks Jyushi is too naive and air-headed for an adult, so he does his best to protect Jyushi from his stalkers and any other people that could hurt him. He's a bit of a hothead and comes off as overzealous and even hissing at people who stand too close to Jyushi.

Jyushi is very patient with Hitoya and thinks he's the cutest kid in the world, an opinion that Kuko very much disagrees with.

Kuko sometimes feels like apologizing to his father after dealing with Hitoya, because damn, was he ever this bad as a kid?

Chuuoku

Otome is young, but she's not stupid. The world sucks and she's doing her best to make it a better place, especially for women. Being responsible for an entire country is overwhelming at times, so she's grateful for Ichijiku's help.

The men vs women agenda isn't quite as fervent as it is in canon, and Otome does her best to include all LGBTQ+ in her equality agenda

Ichijiku still hates men, but she softens a bit when it comes to Otome. The girl is young, but dang if she isn't doing her best.

Nemu willingly works with the Chuuoku, though she is very tired of her brother's dumbassery. Seriously, who actually calls themselves Mr. Hardcore without being embarrased?

Otome used to live with her mother, but she got sick of all the "being a lady" BS that traditional family spout and ran away once she was old enough. Dice being her dad, helped her settle on her own and sending whatever money has sometimes.

Once she overthrew the government, she has a steady home and paycheck, so she regularly sends money and visits him. Thankfully, the money is never spent of gambling because Dice finds it too precious to throw away like that.

Random Ramuda Headcanons

AN: In honor of my favorite hypmic boy and the fact that 2nd ARB is driving me crazy I decided to use this as a reason to start posting my headcanons,, I'm still debating on if I wanna open writing request or not but maybe this will help me decide. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy ^^

Under cut because these headcanons are quite long- also spoilers for Before the 2nd ARB FP drama track

Kinda getting straight to the point, I like to say that there are two sides of Ramuda. There's 'optimist' and 'pessimist'

Everyone but a few members of Chuuoku only know Ramuda for his fake, optimist self

But then there is Ramuda's true self: a pessimistic, deep-voiced, and maybe even intelligent man

Who probably hates the fact that he has to be a ditz when playing his optimist role

And it doesn't help that his pessimism gets the best of him and makes him believe that he'll always be this way until he dies

"A man who had to fake his true identity and follow orders as he works himself to death," is what he would label himself

Until the events of The Loneliness, Tears, and Hope of a Puppet happened

Now he doesn't know what he is or what he's supposed to do

While he proclaims that it's awful now that Chuuoku has gotten rid of him, in logical sense, it's actually better

And that's what Dice and Gentaro are there to remind him of

Because they definitely are not leaving him alone after the events of the drama track

Gentaro would probably tease him about it, not in an jerk matter, but in a, "You really can't fake it all anymore, we already got a hint of it" type of way

Other than telling Ramuda out loud, this is the closest thing Gentaro does to just tell Ramuda that he can put trust in them and inform them on what's going on

And of course Dice is somewhat off the walls over the whole situation

He'll always ask Ramuda when he can be labeled as a survivor so he can tell the two everything about the clones and such

And even though Ramuda always responds with a decline, or maybe even a threat in his deep-tone voice, he can't even get mad at them

In all honesty, he would tell them, he wants to in fact. But he's scared to

This whole time he wanted to prove to Chuuoku that he wasn't a failure, that he was the best clone they had and prove them wrong

So if he was to cave in and tell them everything, to go behind the backs of the ones he's been loyal to for possible years scares him deeply

He also would have no choice but to throw away any hope of being considered a success in their eyes, because he did a common human action and gave into peer pressure

And he's no human

...Right?

Because humans do nothing but make mistakes, have emotions, and fail orders

Surely the time he disobeyed the order of using the true hypothesis microphone to put Jakurai to sleep can be overlooked

No doubt the unexplained frustration and irritation he had whenever Ichijiku called him on the phone can be ignored

And of course, that one time back in the TTD era where Ramuda made the mistake of letting his true self rash out at Jakurai won't be counted

So it's obvious that Ramuda isn't human, not even close!

Is what he would basically tell himself mere moments after stressing over the possibility of him dying because he's getting low of candy supply

Yeah, at this point, everyone but Ramuda can agree that he can be considered human at this point.

But God forbit you grab the guts to just tell him this out loud in his face

He is going to be PISSED

It's one of the last things he wants to hear from anyone

Now, Ramuda isn't cocky- but when it comes to him being either a clone or a human, he gets very subjective and wants to believe he's a clone no matter what

Since, in his eyes, being a clone is a good thing. It means he isn't the oddball out of the undefined number of clones out there

But then he thinks of his teammates- they definitely aren't normal out of the many gamblers and writers out there

Gentaro's entire personality isn't even close to any other writer Ramuda has encountered

And Dice's luck in gambling can be so disastrous it's abnormal

So when it comes to this unique division, Ramuda has to be special in some way

Even though he wants to say he's special because of his designing skills, or his special ability of getting the ladies, deep down he knows it's not that

Yet when he wants to think about the topic any longer, fear stops him

If only he could just talk to someone, anyone, who would be able to not only hear him but help him out

But maybe they're already here, he just needs to set all of his concerns away and open up to them

So, while carrying years of stress, worries, fears, but yet a small bit of hope on his shoulders

He walks into the room to see both of his 'friends' turning their attention to him. With a deep breath, he says:

"Get comfy. If you want the whole story, then we're to be here for a long time."

30 Days of Hypmic Challenge

Day 18: A Character You Thought You Wouldn’t Like

Jinguji Jakurai! My first thought seeing him, ‘man he’s pretty.’ Second thought ‘I probably should not trust him!’ Y’all I’m not kidding when I thought there was some super sketch stuff going on. I thought not only was Jakurai the cause of the Dirty Dawg breaking up but that he probably kills people! I mean...both of those are not exactly wrong but I was not right in the way it went. It did not help me when I heard him the first time. I thought ‘oh god, that’s deeper than I thought’ and then ‘are we SURE he’s not like some antagonist to this?’ 

So yeah imagine my surprise he’s just some guy that’s out to help people by being a doctor and being the responsible one in his team. It was such a ride to even get to know Jakurai at all...Because I was totally thinking he’s one of those sketchy ‘doctors’ that like mafia use because they don’t want to go to actual hospital. Nope, he totally works at one. Far too often.

I will admit I don’t completely know where I stand with Jakurai. I know I don’t dislike him but I wouldn’t put him as like my favorite despite how much I love the team overall. And that may be because I simply don’t ‘get’ Jakurai. Like I know he is a truly humble man that’s trying the impossible (like all these other crazy bastards in this series) and that he has a rep of being like a saint to all others. But I don’t really get how he ticks. Which is odd because Jakurai often has asides in drama tracks or voices things directly. Maybe because I don’t get his negativity quite so clearly. Even when he’s point blank about it to Ramuda. I really can’t tell if it’s genuine annoyance...which feels hard to think about considering his patience or if he’s still stricken by grief and frustration with Ramuda’s presence. I do not know. 

Which is a bit strange since as a writer, I like writing characters of such a distinct or powerful image and just...breaking that here and there. While I would like to see that happen...I’m almost afraid of what will crawl out if you managed to break that saintly image of Jakurai to others. Because he’s so contained in everything...it’s difficult to guess what comes next. Super interesting but at the same time he’s......not as fun? I mean he has a distinct personality but I wouldn’t say it’s strong, especially compared to the rest of Maternou whose over the top personalities can end up drowning his. Him being succinct and not as talkative does not help. 

I think I’m more interested in his background because it is quite interesting in the tidbits that we have heard. And I am of the opinion it does make sense but I am more of the question as to in what way does it make sense. Like with his background, did Jakurai used to be a certain way and then something happened (I usually imagine it having to do with Yotsutsuji) that made him think...’am I a bad person?’ And he went about changing his ways. Or was it more of a he was always very good at heart but either by circumstance (such his family) or some other reason (such as being in the military or him being dogged about something he’s chasing) make him go onto this path and either when getting what he wanted or realizing his path would bring about more destruction did he stop? Both seem possible with Jakurai but there’s no indication of which or exactly how. 

Although one thing I do think is that Jakurai doesn’t know how to interact with people normally because he’s put up on a pedestal for so long. It’s not an ego that gets him, it’s the isolation. Because of his image, not many think of him as just some guy that deals with things like grief nor insecurity. That he’s on some level that they can’t or aren’t and Jakurai obviously doesn’t believe that. But he also doesn’t feel he can sway people from it either...which leads him to feel he HAS to be a certain way or that he simply has to take it with thin-lipped smile.

Okay answering these based on division or troupe is kind of harder bc ya know they’re all such mixed bags and it’s much easier to pick either based on character or based on play or whatever but alright let’s go

Alright so this is an A3 blog so actor boys first alright so based on troupe the songs I like (not necessarily my faves just any song I like) clock in like this: Winter gets 5, Autumn gets 8, Summer gets 6 and Spring gets 5. So the short answer to your answer technically is Autumn but I wanna talk so I’m gonna keep going thanks 💃🏻

Also full disclosure this doesn’t really take into account the lyrics/meaning of the songs and I generally have more of an aversion to slower songs, I’m very picky with them

Spring: Chikage really gives them that oomf. The theme for the Charlatan of Oz has great harmonies with him and Sakuya, it’s super cute. Chikage has the best solo, followed by Itaru and then Masumi. I don’t remember their troupe themes at all except the one part in the one where they go “Oh my god!” which is hilarious. I love 3/6 of their play themes. Itaru and Masumi are practically indistinguishable in the Alex in Wonderland theme I have no idea who is singing when.

Summer: Tenmas singing leaves a lot to be desired for me. I like MAYBE 2 of their solo songs. I love Yukis and maybe Kazunaris if I’m in the right mood but the others are meh. Their troupe themes fucking bop. 3/6 play themes are my faves, Susume Pirates is absolutely a top fave. Misumi the best singer followed by Yuki and Kumons solo song was disappointing, admittedly.

Autumn: Juza is ABSOLUTELY the best singer in the group even though I find Loner to be meh. I don’t prefer almost any of their solo songs. Taichis kind of grew on me but even then I don’t go out of my way to listen to it and Banris is good but like idk I just don’t go out of my way to listen to that either. Their themes are good and basically every play theme is good too, Buzamas DEFINITELY my favorite.

Winter: Winter is saved almost exclusively by Guy and Homare, they have the only solo songs I like. Homares song has everything: it has acordian, it has violin, it has harmonica, it has xylophone, it has a referee whistle, it has that part in Castelvania where Dracula smashes his wine glass, it’s perfect. Homares voice is so comically distinctive I can’t tell several members apart in the Fuyugumi version of Ever Blooming but my god is Homare easy to pick out. This applies to play themes too since my favorites are Unmask, Dokkou Dou and es no Yuutsu. Homares harmonies with Hisoka? Flawless. The bass that pierces the crust of the earth in Dokkou Dou? Incredible. Masterful. Two robots are carrying the music of winter troupe on their backs.

Let’s be real here though, the mixed troupe songs are where it’s fucking at. Growing Pains, Q to Ju and Contract are the PEAK of this franchises musical accomplishments.

now I have to do HypMic dear god alright so the first wave songs do not hold a candle to the second wave songs and I stand by that, for one. I have not listened to BAT or DHs music yet so they will be excluded. I can pretty confidently probably say Matenrō has my favorite songs but also.... I can contribute that almost entirely to Hifumi bc both of his songs fucking bop. Admittedly a lot of the songs in general do not do a lot for me BUT they might be an acquired taste and maybe they’ll grow on me but in terms of faves off the top of my head Matenrō gets 3, MTC gets 2 (both Samatoki), and FP and BB both get 1. Also Death Respect is my favorite battle song. Black and White fucking slaps.

Samatoki carries MTC bc I do not like Jyuto or Rios songs, and Ichiro carries BB for sure. Requiems not bad though. Break the Wall sounds like it could’ve been composed by TWRP which hits all the right notes for me for sure I love TWRP lmao. I love Jakurai with all my heart and soul but I can’t say I really like his songs too much. He did have a gospel choir in the one though and like... respect. Pink Colored Love is so fucking evil but like........ it’s good. Papillon is just fucking hilarious like my boys...... fishing....... they love each other...... I have not listened to a Private Time yet but I know a lot of people vibe with that one too

Okay I’m guessing District 3 for all three buster bros because in District 3, their work is general electronics so I can really see them tinkering and all that

When his brothers get picked he volunteers as tribute for the games because there is no way in hell he was leaving them

When the training begins he puts heads immediately with Samatoki, but they do end up working together because 1, 2, and 3 usually do end up together because of connections and part of the top 3 districts

But it becomes a BB and MTC alliance so it’s districts 3, 4, and 2.

Jiro

Obviously also District 3

And when he gets picked he’s like panicking inside and when sabre gets picked he’s also panicking

And when ichiro volunteers he’s screaming because like the rule is that there will be one victor and all that

But he values his brothers and is grateful that they’re there with him

Ah, he’s Cato but with more brain

I mean, in a sense that he’s angry, rash and strong, but he knows when to yield and he’s not overconfident in his abilities

Because as someone who works in the weapons district, he knows how to handle multiple and doesn’t want to just be good at one

So with the given training for 1, 2 and 3, he usually takes advantage of it

Yes he succumbs to anger, but that doesn’t stop him from being lethal

Nemu actually gets picked but samatoki volunteers instead

Jyuto

Most likely District 2

He ends up with samatoki because he’s the one restraining the fits of anger and aggression

And then when he and samatoki get picked it’s like us again eh

And they do end up sticking together in training, and with Jyuto’s law enforcement background in district two plus officer for all the weapons and all

And he’s dangerous because he can lie and break your trust, which is why when BB allies with MTC, ichiro and Jyuto don’t sleep at all

Riou

District 4 for Fishing

He only ended up with samatoki and Kyoto because they saw his skill during training so samatoki and riot fought it out and figured they would be good temporary allies

And when they somehow team up with BB, it’s gonna be wild because only jiro and burp sleep and the four males are either on guard duty or watching each other

Tbh, riou can sleep, it’s just he can wake up so fast and kill you pretty quickly too

Ramuda

Definitely district 1

He produces most of the luxury clothing and has a factory in 8 where he gets the textiles for his designs

When he gets picked he gets the most care packages, the best training and is actually pretty lethal with weapons  

He’s like district one’s trump card and all that, besides jakurai

Would probably stand toe to toe with jakurai for a while and would ally himself with two of the people from 8 because textile bonds you know

Gentaro

Probably district 8

He’s probably working. The textile thing out as well, but he’s not that good so mostly he does modelling because obviously he likes wearing nice clothes

He also serves as a writer for like ramada’s clothing line (like the descriptions of the outfits, the tagline)

When he gets picked he’s really so afraid because he legitimately can’t do anything much besides be smart

So during training his strategising ability and silver tongue make use

Dice

Probably also district 8

Homeless boy, ends up with Genaro because they both got picked and that dice is the one gentaro always gives the extra textiles to and sometimes even makes the garbage boy clothes

And anyway, when he gets picked he like panics but he just does his best really and he’s good at surviving at bare minimum so there’s that

Downside is that he’s so fucking loud, everyone would know there he is

Jakurai

He would probably be district 1

Don’t tell me they don’t hire hitmen in the Capitol

Like, not only is he a doctor but he is also an assassin, so his training basically makes him a well trained individual equipped with the stealth and skill in the field

Jesus fucking christ he would really,,,, like,,, he can move so fast (we’ve seethe manga) and this is assuming he didn’t stop training because he’s in district one

So imagine, he would be so good and able to heal himself

But he’s compassionate and does not actively search for violence like ramuda or cause trouble

Doppo

I can see him being stressed in 6

Like for transportation he’s running around and managing the papers

And hhohoo when he gets picked he really feels like the world is ending so he’s depressed and drinking all the way to the capitol

And then he meets Hifumi who is a district one guy but latches to him like a dog ever since he first bumped and apologised so they end up teaming up

District 1

Probably would stick to jakurai because ramada is quite, well, his dark side comes out so that’s an entirely different thing

Anyway, Hifumi would be in charge of luxury alcohol for the capitol

Like, yeah he would and he wouldn’t like to be part of the hunger games but he ends up being part

So it’s panic overload so he ends up with Doppo who is also panicking

And they’re assisted by jakurai who is a doctor and effectively calms them down

I do love all the boys, but personally the one most likely to win is Jakurai, though we can be surprised by the others as well

A dumb Buster Bros headcannon (so everything is definitely not true!) that’s sad and kinda dark because I’ve been watching way too many Adventure Time analysis videos and I feel analytical myself.

SO! Jiro and Saburo are just figments of Ichiro’s imagination to help him cope with his terrible life uwu. Maybe Jiro and Saburo are manifestations of Ichiro’s psyche, kinda like an imaginary friends kind of thing. I guess Ichiro created his brothers in his head because he wants friends and maybe a family. We see that through The Dirty Dawg manga, he had been scammed by people he trusted such as the people in the orphanage and a partner he worked with to collect money. Thus, I believe (and assume) that he has abandonment issues and is very lonely and struggling with mental issues and Jiro and Saburo are meant to help cope.

To be fair, I did this for fun and I hope you enjoy reading and feel free to tell me why I’m wrong in the comments below. This is very baseless but I wanna get it off my chest uwu. Also, evidence is my memory of the manga and I’m not a psychologist! 

Perhaps Jiro is a manifestation of Ichiro’s very notable delinquent side as shown by how the hypmic writers note that Jiro is especially influenced by Ichiro and looks up to him a lot. Jiro was probably the first “imaginary friend” he has and so Ichiro made Jiro very similar to him so it’s easier for Ichiro to connect with him?? I would think that it’s easier to be friends with someone who has a similar temperament to you, right? So maybe Jiro was the first manifestation of Ichiro’s personality. Ichiro might have been fairly young and still doesn’t really know much about himself, let alone others, so he created Jiro as a way to become fast friends and get companionship when he’s going through a tough time.

Then, there’s Saburo. Saburo is arguably the most different from the current Yamada brothers in terms of personality but he is definitely an “Ichiro-boy”. Unlike Jiro, it is quite ambiguous to ascertain which part of Ichiro’s personality was the one that succeeded in personifying to create Saburo. However, I have a vague idea of a one. This is so because Ichiro got a little bit more mature when he got to creating Saburo. That’s why Ichiro didn’t really feel the need to make Saburo just like him or anything like that, especially when he’s noted to being a good kid and not a delinquent like his older brothers. 

That being said, Saburo is a manifestation of Ichiro’s honest personality (and perhaps his light “pretty boy” vibe). Ichiro is known to express his emotions very bluntly when he feels himself or others are wronged; Saburo is similar but he’s rude, snarky and sassy when it comes to voicing out his first impressions of people. They are both honest, but we should see the nuance in this honesty. The introduction of nuance means that Ichiro is better able to understand himself and doesn’t really need to be with people just like him to feel loved or understood. The larger age gap between Ichiro and Saburo versus Ichiro (5 years) and Jiro (2 years) is also telling because with the creation of Jiro, Ichiro’s mental state could have improved and he did more personal reflection in that time so he probably experimented until Saburo was born and Saburo was the one who stayed because of how strong he was. 

Also, I thought of this later but maybe Saburo was someone Ichiro wanted to be: a clean, intelligent boy with a genuinely good heart who is able to survive on his own without feeling lonely as shown by Saburo’s introverted nature and ability to be nice when he wants to be. Of course, Saburo is not completely like that but maybe Ichiro really did want to be a good kid and that’s the kind of boy he imagined for Saburo. That’s sad because maybe he feels that he isn’t a good person or someone who deserves goodness innately so he tried to imagine someone who does - a cute pretty boy with endearing overconfidence.

So, allow me to talk about how this kinda fits into the lore. Well, for one thing, during the orphanage days what strikes me most is that the boys (Jiro and Saburo) hated Ichiro for quite a long time because Ichiro threatened their caretaker who was actually exploiting them. This is a conflict I find particularly intriguing. Here we have Ichiro who sees the reality of life for the first time versus Jiro and Saburo who are oblivious and pure. He’s particularly vulnerable because he is growing up and is trying to understand things for himself and that’s why he lashed out. Fun fact, the men who took advantage of Ichiro probably represent how the world is cruel and how life goes on whether you like it or not or the injustice of life, blah blah. However, as based by my nonsense earlier, Jiro and Saburo are just pure manifestations of Ichiro’s personality, they don’t see the things Ichiro himself had seen and so they don’t know anything. I guess Ichiro protected them to keep their purity so he can have a safe space of companionship and family far removed from the hardship in the real world to feel better, like an oasis. After all, Jiro and Saburo are very new when it comes to the Hypnosis Mic things and with life in general so maybe that’s Ichiro’s influence at play as well?

Anyways, at the orphanage, Jiro and Saburo hate Ichiro because Ichiro inflicted it on himself as a form of punishment. If we think that Jiro and Saburo are mere manifestations then Ichiro may subconsciously influence their feelings. Ichiro may have felt a little bad for threatening their caretaker or when he knows more about life: he feels horrible like he had been used and that all his efforts to help himself is futile. Because he’s feeling turbulent emotions, he could be projecting his inner self-loathing onto his “imaginary friends” Jiro and Saburo by making them hate him and feeling like he betrayed them. At this point, Jiro and Saburo are becoming real people and thus are more able to act on their newfound feelings more and really reflect Ichiro’s self-loathing as he is forced to come to terms with the situation he is in. To get out of it requires lots of courage that he does not have at the time and he knows it so that’s why he’s “punishing” himself for being so weak and cowardly. 

If you think like why would someone do that to themselves? Well, I’d like to say that when you’re in between a rock and a hard place and you don’t know that such despairs are normal, you would have so much self-doubt and self-loathing as you think you’re pathetic and so you unconsciously go into a downward spiral as you pity yourself. In this case, Ichiro made Jiro and Saburo hate him as part of his “self-loathing” stage because he thinks that he deserved it.

Now, let us return to present day because I don’t want to waste your time. 

Jiro and Saburo argue a lot for Ichiro’s attention and praise. This is probably because they may have acknowledged that they are mere creations but they love Ichiro dearly and thus they want to be equal with Ichiro, to be acknowledged as worthy. Even though Ichiro was growing up and had to learn to be independent, Ichiro still went back to save them and they treasure that so much and were even dumbfounded. With this, they want to be seen as real people Ichiro can rely on for anything and more than just companionship. 

At this point, Jiro and Saburos’ personalities and characters are so solid and real that they simply transcend Ichiro’s imagination and become functional people in the real world. Ichiro’s happy for this though; they are all growing up. Maybe instead of the typical imaginary friends concept when imaginary friends disappear as you get older, Jiro and Saburo become real as Ichiro can learn to live with them not as coping mechanisms but as actual friends and even as a family. Ichiro has matured significantly during The Dirty Dawg era (I must acknowledge that Samatoki and Kuko had a large part in encouraging him and helping him develop) and so he doesn’t need to rely on Jiro and Saburo as a pure version of himself but as people. This thus allows their characters to develop naturally independent of his mental influence. 

At the end of the day, I want to say that Ichiro loves Jiro and Saburo deeply on so many levels and that love is reciprocated today. I don’t exactly know how this will develop over time but I hope this theory makes sense and would be interesting for you. Anyways, like I said, please tell me why I’m wrong in the comments below.

Kuukou is the one main cast member who is undeniably a devout Buddhist. We see him following acetic practices, reciting sutras, quoting (often fake) Buddhist texts, and praying to the Buddha. Hmm...praying? Don't some forms of Buddhism discourage treating the Buddha as a deity? And the kind of harsh, acetic training he endures isn't universally practiced, right? Plus, he talks about reaching paradise or multiple forms of Buddhist hell...not to mention Buddhist deities/mythological or religious figures like Yama and the nagas. Which some forms of Buddhism reject altogether! Again, there are many different types of Buddhism in Japan, and Kuukou appears to practice...all of them. I doubt this decision was made to reflect a particular aspect of Kuukou's character so much as to avoid any stickiness in regard to real life controversial topics. (Hypmic is pretty keen to avoid IRL political issues, hence its aversion to pursing LGBT topics, avoidance of most serious discussions of gender, and jokey portrayal of Dice's homelessness and gambling addiction.) A syncretic mix of Buddhism prevents accusations of favoritism or misrepresentation. Plus, it also allows Buddhist readers of all types to identify with the character!

But you asked about Christianity and Jakurai in particular. Does Christianity exist in Hypmic and Japanese media in particular? There certainly is a non-insignificant number of Christians in Japan, but it's generally considered a minority religion. The Christian God, Jesus, and other major parts of the religion are common knowledge via Western domination of international culture and thought, but Christianity is often assumed to be a "Western" and therefore "foreign" religion by non-Christian writers. Hypmic characters would be aware of Christianity but are unlikely to follow it.

They might, however, consider it a cool aesthetic. Enter Juushi! In the vkei world and other youth subcultures, Christian symbols abound. One of vkei's main inspirations is the British gothic aesthetic, and Western religious or mythological icons. Juushi drops a ton of Western ideas and images (Cerberus, Arcadia, random French, Shakespeare references--just off the top of my head) in his speech and raps, and I wouldn't be surprised if Christian icons start showing up at some point too. There's nothing reverent about it; it just slaps. Iyogi, Juushi's middle school bully, wears a chain of crosses but is almost certainly not Christian. He just thinks they're metal as hell.

Therefore, Jakurai isn't Christian either. He's definitely "godlike" but not in the Christian sense of the term. In Japanese, it's common to refer to someone very good as "kami" or "god." This technically refers to the Shinto kami, but I don't think it's any more connected to religion in casual speech than someone saying "oh my god" in English. Shinto kami are also not the same as the Abrahamic God. While there are powerful, creator kami, most kami are simply viewed as otherworldly or slightly more powerful than humans. You might think of existence as a spectrum of talent or ability, with humans at one end and kami as the next stage onward in the spectrum. If Jakurai is compared to a "kami," it doesn't mean he thinks of himself as a creator, judge, or ruler of life. Nor is he completely almighty, as would be suggested by associating him with the God of Abrahamic religions. Instead, Jakurai is so very good at what he does that he's transcended humanity. This, in turn, makes him difficult to approach or empathize with on a human level--which is Hitoya's core struggle with him. (There's a bit at the end of their DRB match where Hitoya says "You seem so human now" and I struggled w/ that in the summary. Because that's what this refers to--you don't seem so removed. You seem like you're on my level. You normally do everything so well I never see evidence of your struggling, but now I can see that you're just like me, and I can empathize with you.) Incidentally, the shining light around Jakurai is indeed a motif of the divine, but it isn't the light of heaven. That is, it's not inherently benevolent. Light is a common motif in Japanese works for being very, very talented--again, like the Shinto kami. If you ever see works where translators keep being like, "This character is shining!" that's what they mean. This character is very, very good at whatever they're doing. If you see works where translators keep being like, "This character is dazzling!" then that's the exact same thing, but they just found a more natural way to phrase it. Ha ha ha.

Hi Slug!! I'm curious about some of the religious imagery in hypmic! Kuko is obvious and I think Doppo has talked about not believing in gods before but what's up with Jakurai? Is he meant to actually be Christian or is it just an aesthetic thing?

Usual disclaimer that I don't live in Japan, so I'm not talking about IRL Japan so much as Japanese media. Media isn't perfectly synonymous with real life and, of course, it's foolish to draw conclusions from the general (media and culture) and apply them to the specific (individual persons). With that being said, media is indicative of real life values and cultural concerns--for example, the American high school experience is a lot less interesting than in movies, but these movies reflect a romanticization of teenagehood so widespread in the US and areas with heavy US cultural influence that filmmakers take it for granted in their audiences--so I can talk about what assumptions inform the portrayal of religion in Hypmic.

As in a lot of Japanese media, religion is present but not explicitly mentioned outside of Kuukou. It's what I would call culturally religious as opposed to actively religious. Similar to how many works in the Anglosphere are steeped with Christian ideas and phrases even if the authors/works themselves aren't Christian (the Christian concept of sin, using "God" or variations as an interjection, etc.), many works written in Japanese are influenced by Shinto and Buddhist ideas. Some people in Japan are active worshipers of Shinto, Buddhism, or both, but many more have a somewhat relaxed approach. It's not uncommon for people to have a belief in a higher power, but the nature of this higher power isn't terribly well-defined. Many people will attend religious ceremonies for holidays or funerals but rarely pray to a higher power outside of moments of great stress. That is, being culturally religious. Traditions are fun and comforting, especially if they involve dressing up in fancy clothes, eating yummy food, and seeing friends and family. Even if you're not especially devout, it doesn't hurt to pray for a bit of luck before a big test, that your child will grow up healthy and strong, or that your recently departed ancestor will be at peace. For those in predominately Christian areas, you probably see plenty of this in your community--people who maybe go to church occasionally for companionship or holiday celebrations but aren't active worshipers. Or, perhaps, people who pray like, "Hey, if anyone's listening, can you lend me a hand?" Maybe you're even one of these people yourself. We can generally assume that most of the cast falls into this camp. Doppo and Hifumi go to a festival with a religious element--charms and rituals to bring good luck by appealing to Shinto deities--but I doubt either of them have a firm belief that these particular deities exist. They may think that there's some higher power...or not. But what's the harm in a good luck charm, right? And more importantly, it's fun to play games, eat, drink, and horse around with friends! But wait, does that mean these two are only Shinto or...Shinto-ish? Probably not. There's an expression that most Japanese people are "born Shinto, but die Buddhist." Shinto rituals tend to focus on matters of the living (although Shintoism has its own distinct funerary rites, sometimes combined with Buddhist rites), while non-devout Buddhists usually participate in Buddhist ceremonies only when loved ones die. We see Juushi and Hitoya with loved ones buried in Buddhist cemeteries, but it's safe to assume both observe Shinto holidays and customs in some fashion. We also see in the very beginning of TDD that Nemu and Samatoki have what appears to be a butsudan--a Buddhist altar--in their home dedicated to their deceased parents. "But wait," some might say, "I thought spirit worship isn't a part of Buddhism." That's true for some forms of Buddhism, but not all! Buddhism is enormously varied, and some of the (many, many!) forms of Buddhism practiced in Japan accept aspects of Shintoism. There's plenty of mixing, just as we see within individuals themselves. Again, the Hypmic characters may not fully believe that spirits exist. (Well, outside of Ramuda...) But it's a comforting thought that one's deceased family members are around in some form and can be a positive influence on one's life.

like it’s already totally in line with the Nitro+CHiRAL Universe Aesthetic™️ of postwar late-stage capitalism ft. gangs of eccentrically-dressed young men taking part in high-tech gang-based street combat (see: Togainu no Chi’s Bl@ster and main Combat City plot, DMMD’s Rib and Rhyme) and those also have a large base of additional content coming from drama cds and a lot of value placed on the talents of the voice actors. you have a large cast of pretty boys who all have very easy-to-distinguish appearances and personalities. i’d bet my left arm that the fandom will inevitably make their own dating sim if you give them long enough (and that it’d be amazing, because the writers for this fandom are pretty great like seriously). this just feels like a logical progression?

anyways this is all just to say that aoba seragaki from DRAMAtical Murder’s Scrap already has hypnosis microphone powers and that if nobody else will do this crossover then i’ll do it myself goddamnit

“Y/n, I’ve called the Odd-Jobs Yamada and talked to the manager..”, these were the words your own manager said, walking in the kitchen of the restaurant you were working in as a chef. You moved your attention from the chicken you were cooking to your manager. It was clear. He had decided to call Ichiro up to ask him for help. The business wasn’t going well at all: every waiter had decided to quit the job because of it; everyone had, except for you. While other workers in there didn’t really know the restaurant’s manager and thought he was such a stingy jerk, you actually did know him. He was a middle-aged man with many economical problems and a wife and some kids to support.

“Really? What did he say?”, you knew Ichiro pretty well. You knew he was such a compassionate young guy with a deep sense of justice.. So he would have agree to help, no doubt.

As you imagined, your manager started immediately crying of joy, hugging you tightly as if you were also part of his own family:

“He told me he’ll come here to hold the post as a chef too, then bring his brothers with him.. They’ll be happy to help too and work as waiters until our business will go on in a better way..!”

You hugged your old manager back, smiling at him, truly happy of the great news!

The next day your manager had appointed you to meet with all the three Yamada brothers at the train station. Those guys were from Ikebukuro, after all. You took your smartphone and reached the station, driving to it. When you arrived, you tried to search for those three boys and even called them up, but without any result, until you heard a familiar voice greeting you:

“Oh, there they are! Ichi-nii! Here’s Y/n-san!!”, Saburo, the youngest one, ran to you followed by his other brothers.

“Here you are!! You look so in shape! I’m glad!!”, this is how Ichiro greeted you, slightly blushing because of your clothes.. psstt.. he thought they were adorable~

That’s how you’d meet also Jiro and Saburo and drove them to the restaurant, where the dear old manager was waiting. The man was sitting on a chair, looking around and desperately thinking about how crowded that room was when he still was young. Unfortunately after his dad’s death something had changed. It seemed that a magical candle, which kept the restaurant crowded, suddenly was blown out by the wind of the death. He’d like to see that room crowded again, especially because he had promised his father.

While he was thinking about it, the restaurant’s door opened and all Yamada brothers walked in with you. The manager immediately stood up and reached Ichiro, hugging him tightly as the young man greeted happily: “Thank you for everything, Ichiro... I really don’t know how to repay you-”, your manager said, almost crying. The dark-haired boy smiled and patted the man’s back, saying that wasn’t a real big deal and that he was always ready to help, so were his brothers. Everyone sat and had some tea, speaking about the restaurant’s past. Your manager told Yamada brothers everything about it, that it belonged to his father, etc..

“I don’t know.. I feel like I’d do anything to make this place crowded like it used to be with my father.. I promised him I would have...”

At this point Ichiro looked at you. You saw a strange light in his eyes, something had changed into him and you knew it. You looked at him back as you saw him walking to your manager and putting his hands on that old man’s shoulder:

“I promised you we’d have helped you making this place as crowded as it was before.. So we’ll do it. Trust me.”, this is what he said.

The big brother was finally brought to the kitchen with you. What was your task? To teach him what to do. Of course the restaurant had its own special dishes and Ichiro needed to learn how to cook them before actually help in kitchen. On the other hand Jiro and Saburo needed to cooperate in the dining room and, you know... Sometimes they started arguing or even competing. All this ended up with Ichiro who scolded them and said that they had to work together. Only in that case the restaurant would have come back to its old days. The two teenagers, then, got back serious and came back to work.

Ichiro and you were both with the manager in the kitchen, while Saburo and Jiro was cleaning the dining room. The atmosphere was surrounded in mystery as the youngest brother talked:

“Jiro.. Come and see...”

The middle brother let the chair he was cleaning and approached him: “What? Don’t you see I’m busy?”

After that he closed his mouth and took a look to all those old pictures that were hung on the wall.

“Is that man the previous manager?”, Jiro asked. He was. The current manager’s father was wearing a green uniform, that was supposed to be the restaurant’s one. He was smiling brightly and holding a giant frying pan full of food.

Finally after some days of learning how to work into that restaurant, it was the day of opening it up again after long time.

Jiro and Saburo decided to talk to Ichiro and, with Ramuda’s help, managed to get a new green uniform for the manager. He was so happy to wear a uniform which was so similar to his father’s one! He even cried... again! Poor man! Saburo and Jiro dressed up as waiters and started preparing the dining room for the guests. The youngest brother dedicated himself to share the new opening of the restaurant in social medias and online in general. Of course a lot of people were happy about it, especially because there were all three BusterBros!!!

Anyway...

Ichiro was looking at the mirror, trying to fix his chef uniform’s hat while you were ensuring there were all the kinds of plates, frying pans and pots you needed to cook each dishes on the menu.

“How do you feel, y/n?”, Ichiro talked to you suddenly. You moved your attention to him, looking into his eyes. It was clear that he was a little bit worried. You sigh as you sat on a chair. He did the same too.

“I just hope I’ll handle this evening.. and that this restaurant won’t be forced to close.”

Your words made Ichiro think more, while he was still pointing his gaze at you. His different eyes still sparkling because of determination. Suddenly he stood up and extended his hand:

Samatoki Aohitsugi

Samatoki would never admit it, but he’s actually really nervous when you finally agree to go on a date with him and because of this will want the first date to be amazing

he would ask if you wanted to come over to his place for dinner, saying that he would cook for you and when you do, he’s immediately researching every website and trying to figure out what the perfect first date meal would be

but it doesn’t really matter, because he’s a fantastic cook and regardless of what he makes, it’s going to taste amazing

he definitely offers you a beer and he’ll drink one too just to loosen up a little bit and get rid of the nerves

but overall, the first date is going to be him wanting to get to know more about you on a personal level

he would be kind of awkward at first, so you would have to help him keep the ball rolling with the conversation

but once the two of you got into the groove of things, there would be lots of teasing and laughing and excitement

if you cook with him, he’ll definitely show you what he’s doing and if you try to show him your own way of doing it he’s either going to be interested or flat out tell you that you’re wrong

either way, you end up staying past dinner and then the two of you go for a walk to the corner store to pick up some dessert

it’s night, so he’ll ask if your warm and if you look cold he’s 100% gonna pull that move where he sighs and tells you to dress warmer, but he gives you his jacket anyways

awww our little tsundere

if the store has a seating area, the two of you would sit there and eat, otherwise you would hurry back to his place to finish the dessert

afterwards, since it’s late, he’ll offer to call you a car home or walk you home if you live closer

the farthest he’ll go on a first date is some kissing though, so he doesn’t really expect you to stay the night or anything

Ramada Amemura:

Your first date with Ramuda is going to be exactly what you expect - a crazy, whirlwind of a day

he’ll tell you to meet him at his shop, and once you do, he’s immediately getting someone to take your measurements while he pulls out different articles of clothing and tries to get your opinion on all of them

you try to ask him why he’s doing this, but he just winks and tells you it’s something special for later

don’t be too surprised if you find a box with a bunch of new clothes showing up at your apartment a few weeks later...yea Ramuda doesn’t know how to do anything low-key

so then the two of you spend the day walking through Shibuya and checking out all the stores

he takes you to lunch first so that you’re not walking around hungry, and it’s a surprisingly upscale restaurant

he excitedly tells you the best things on the menu and there’s lots of talking and laughing throughout the meal

afterwards, he grabs you by the hand and asks you to show him your favorite spots in the city and he also pulls you to his favorite spots as well

you stop by clothing stores, bookstores, shoe stores, liquor stores, hole in the walls, record stores, and so many other shops

one ends up being a candy shop and the two of you splurge to buy those massive cotton candy flowers that are bigger than your head

Ramuda will 100% ask you to feed him some of the candy

he basically takes you by the hand and spends the whole day showing you all that the city has to offer

and although you’ve lived there for a long time, everything seems to be different when you’re looking at it with Ramuda by your side

afterwards, he’s going to ask if you want him to walk you home or if you maybe want to go back to his place *hint**hint*wink*wink*

definitely won’t pressure you to do anything though

as soon as you’re home, he’s already texted you a ton of emojis and is asking when you’re free to go on another date

Gentaro Yumeno:

The first time Gentaro asks you on a date is to a charming half-coffee shop, half-book store that’s tucked away in a little corner of Shibuya

you spend some time just chatting and getting to know each other some more since you didn’t know too much before accepting the date

and over the course of a cup of your favorite beverage, you feel like you have a better sense of who Gentaro is

the conversation flows really easily, partially because Gentaro is very open and curious and easy to talk to

you find yourself telling him things you usually wouldn’t say to other people on first dates, but that’s only because he’s already made you feel so comfortable around him

if you’re into reading or books, Gentaro will definitely strike up conversation on the most recent ones you’ve read and the different genres that you like

of course, he’ll tell you he’s a writer and he might tease you a little that he’d love to make a poem of your beauty

the two of you end up staying at the shop long enough to warrant actually buying a meal as you find yourself becoming more and more charmed by the man before you

Gentaro would talk about his different interests and likes and dislikes, but he wouldn’t talk about anything too heavy on a first date

he would want to keep it light so that you leave feeling good about the time you spent with him

he wants to get to know everything about you, and he thinks it’s cute when you get excited talking about your interests, so he’ll always ask more follow-up questions just to hear you keep talking

once you two are satisfied with your meal, he’s going to ask if you want him to walk you home, or if you need him to call you a car

also not really the type to do much more on a first date than a hug or a chaste, romantic kiss

he’s good with reading body language, so if you seem nervous he’s not going to pull anything, but if you initiate, he’s more than happy to indulge you in a kiss

There were some good questions asked in the Discord and on Twitter, so I’ve decided to make a post with them and their answers here.

For the "accompanying piece of media" bit in this case, does that mean AUs as well or just preexisting fics/fanart? It just means that you shouldn't need to have any extras outside of the big bang for your entry to be understood—like a prequel to understand the plot. It is the responsibility of the writer to make sure their AU can be understood to a reader without context, if that makes sense.

Can the fic have any rating? Yes, as long as it’s rated and tagged properly. Incest and romantic adult/minor pairings are banned. I expect participants to be mindful of the content of their work as this is a collaborative event, but will not hesitate to impose further bans on disturbing content like noncon and necrophilia if necessary.

When everything’s ready, is all the finish content posted on one big post or...? Generally, it’s posted as a fanfic with images embedded in it, but the final format is to be decided between the writer and artist!

Are crossovers okay? I’ve thought about this and I’m going to say that crossovers are not okay, but AUs are, so we can keep the focus on the HypMic characters.

Can we post the final products on our own accounts after the deadline? You’re supposed to! I even have an AO3 collection set up for when the time comes. However, please do not post until I give the okay as I’m using the time between the deadline and posting date to check entries.

When the fic ideas come out, what if there are two fics with the same ideas? Will one have to change it? No, I’m not going to make anyone change their fic ideas. However, I will message the authors and offer them the option to change.

Are there any specific scenarios or are we allowed to write what we want so long as it isn't incest and adult/minor? There aren’t any specific scenarios, but please be mindful that your content will be open for other people to see. If I see any really disturbing/triggering material as a trend, I will not hesitate to impose further content bans.

Is there an origination/reason for the "don't spoil entries" rule? It’s mostly so you don’t reveal the surprise! Part of the fun is seeing everyone’s results. It also stops the (hopefully low) chance that someone else may come in and take your idea, artist or writer-wise.

When you say talking about entries in general is fine, do you mean to the extent of saying what pairings/characters you're using or is it alright to state the premise without revealing plot points? You can state the ship! But anything plot-related is a no-no.

If I’ve briefly mentioned a fic concept on social media before, is it okay to use? As long as nothing extensive was mentioned (e.g. plot points, ending, etc), then that’s totally fine.

Can you sign up as both an artist and writer? Yes, but you are responsible for whatever workload you have.
