Seriously @staff the photo player update sucks. It also effects some videos, and for those I've lost the pause button??? Put it back! There's literally no benefit to this.

I really need to talk for a minute about this new mobile update and how much I as a legally blind person hate whatever the hell is going on with the photos and how it's making this app nearly impossible for me to use

I'm not sure the same thing is happening on the desktop version but for those who may not know in the app whenever you tap on a photo it used to just pop up and you could double tap to enlarge it and zoom in and scroll around and all was great.

A double tap now likes the photo and it must be pinched and pulled to zoom in and out. A mild annoyance, and nothing compared to the rest of the update. If you scroll up, which I do frequently when trying to navigate an enlarged photo, it will send you to ANOTHER photo based on the tags of the post.

That's right, a completely different photo!!! A feature no one asked for and no one wants!! This isn't facebook, or instagram, and maybe tiktok but I never had that so this is a guess. When I click on the photo I only want to see that photo (or in the case of multiple photos in a post I want to be able to easily scroll side to side for those). I do not want to be taken to another post!!! Also if you scroll too far to the left you are then sent to the profile of the person who reblogged the post. I do not know why. Who wants this feature? Is it a feature at all?

As someone who only taps on a photo because I cannot see it and I need to enlarge it, this is beyond a simple annoyance. I cannot navigate the photo like I need, there's a hair trigger on whether it sends you to a new post completely or if you are sent to the profile of the reblogger. Neither, again, are things I want. this leaves me having to back track a lot, re-zoom the photo as it reverts back to normal, and hope dearly that this time I can just read the damned text before it freaks out again.

I haven't seen anyone else talk about this outside of the tags, but really this is making the app unusable for me, and I'm sure for many others.

@staff I know you guys haven't cared about your disabled community much in the past (other photo updates that stopped allowing me to zoom into gifs is proof of that) but please don't make this app unusable for me. I would rather not have to leave.

i live in greg abbott's red texas. you know, the largest state that borders the most vilified neighboring country and receives the majority of latino immigrants + has a huge black population + a lot of arab and asian immigrants

was selling Sweet Ruin to a friend today, and am now remembering that in the end of Munro (the novel) Lothaire accompanies Balery and Ellie to Munro and Kereny's little baby celebration (because Ellie and Balery need to see the baaaaabies) and says some weird shit about how he's not gonna target Munro's sons for blackmail until they're adults

and then Munro freaks him out by being like "ummmmm your oracle said your daughters would marry my sons so you can fuck off" and he's so horrified by this prospect that he like cat hisses and disappears

the book makes it clear that Lothaire and Ellie are waiting for After the Apocalypse to have kids, as sensible vampires (like Lachlain and Emma, except not because Emma is poking holes in condoms for sure and Lachlain is fully aware of this but also is Not Strong Enough) and it's played as a joke, buuuuuut this is why my prevailing IAD theory is that Lothaire and Ellie are going to be girl parents only, the end

x87 is such an abomination.

Well, frankly the whole of x86 is an abomination. Forty years of backwards-compatibility-focused CISC extensions will do that to you.

But x87, man. 'Cause FPUs used to be discrete, optional chips, right? Your basic-ass 8086 couldn't do floating point whatsoever, you needed to install an 8087 alongside it for that. Likewise, the 80286 needed an 80287, and the 80386 needed an 80387, and it wasn't until the i486DX that the FPU was on the same package as the CPU.

So, y'know, you couldn't talk to it directly -- like a modern GPU. It was it's own processor. Ergo, you can't actually address its registers directly. It's a stack machine. Want to add two floats? You gotta send 'em over -- one at a time -- with the FPUSH instruction, then send an FADD, then FPOP to get the result back out.

There are two divide instructions. One for if the numerator is first on the stack, another for if the denominator is first.

And it's just... still like this. After forty years. Modern CPUs have their FPUs not but micrometers from the rest of the ALU, but you still have to talk to it like it's on a different bus. No other part of the ALU operates like a stack machine -- just the x87 stuff. And it'll continue to work that way. Forever.

We gotta move desktops to RISC, man. This shit is untenable.
