Killing Time 1
Warnings: this fic will include elements, some dark, includes violence, noncon/dubcon, and other untagged triggers. Please take this into account before proceeding. It is up to curate your online consumption safely.
Summary: a job offer could be an escape from your old life, but the new one, may not hold freedom.
Characters: Kraven the Hunter, August Walker, Lloyd Hansen, James Conrad, God the Bounty Hunter, Court Gentry
Author’s Note: Please feel free to leave some feedback, reblog, and jump into my asks. I’m always happy to discuss with you and riff on idea. As always, you are cherished and adored! Stay safe, be kind, and treat yourself💜
Your frustration mounts as you click the permissions again to allow the camera and microphone access. It’s so annoying! It just keeps running you in circles. Great. This is off to a good start. Late for the interview. That’s always the best first impression.
When at last your firewall stops blocking the call, you flinch at the sight of yourself in the corner. You’re further jarred by the man staring back at you. Your mouth opens and for a moment, you’re frozen. You were so focused on troubleshooting, you forgot about what was waiting on the other end.
“Oh, hi,” you squeak. “Sorry, I--” you look around, glancing through the clear walls of the library study room. It’s the first time you’ve been to this branch but you didn’t think the clutter of your apartment would make a good backdrop. “I was having issues with my camera.”
“Quite alright,” he responds with a grin and a lilted accent. He sounds as professional as he looks.
He wears a grey jacket over a muted teal shirt that lights up his eyes, even over the screen. His short hair is combed back neatly and there’s not a speck of stubble on his jaw. Under the structure of his attire you can tell he’s well-built.
You resist the urge to look down at yourself. A white blouse. Boring but professional. It gets the job done. Hopefully.
You force a smile.
“Thank you for meeting with me,” he begins through your nervous silence. “I do appreciate your time and I would hate to waste it. So, we can hop right in.” He looks unflinchingly into the camera, “oh, let us not go so far past courtesy. I am James, we’ve been corresponding, yes?”
“Uh, yeah, I remember. James.” You gulp.
He says your name with a keen inclination. “This is rather not the position which requires those cliche questions so I won’t trouble you with asking what animal best reflects your personality.”
You cough out a humouring chuckle and fold your hands on the desk.
“Forgive if I should seem to the point. You see, it’s a very practical position. I think it’s best we go over what is expected before we go into the finer details; expenses, relocation, dates--”
“Mm,” you squeak and put a finger up, “s-sorry, um, I thought we were interviewing but it sound like you’ve made a decision?”
“Well, yes, I’ve reviewed your CV and your submitted profile and your answers to the questionnaire were acceptable. I didn’t think there was much else to consider,” he intones. You shift and try to hide your surprise.
“No, of course, that makes sense,” you say. “Thanks, I guess I was confused.”
“Not to worry. I find that written communication can often lack clarity so I thought it best we have a face-to-face in this circumstance,” he looks down as if he has a book or paper before him. “So, did you have any questions before I proceed?”
“No, no, really, I'm sure you’ll answer them all.” Your cheeks bloom in a half-smile. You were so nervous about getting the job but you’ve already got it.
“Right then,” he sits back and once more stares down the camera. “It is a very old property but the upkeep has been consistent. There should not be any glaring necessities for maintenance, this more of a custodial position. So, you would be the one to keep the place clean, make sure it is aired out, tend to the lawns but we do employ a grounds keeping service that comes fortnightly to trim.”
You nod. It’s intriguing. You were sent photos of the property but you’re not quite sure of its purpose. Judging by the clustered pines in the background, you would guess it’s remote. A getaway that could be a goldmine for those wanting a vacation from the urban jungle.
“You would have a roster, you see, of those you could contact for service so you will not require any specialisations. You are the day-to-day and would be expected to bring in the appropriate support for higher-touch difficulties.”
“Right,” you try not to show your anxiety.
“Albeit I should warn you that the reception in that location is not the greatest so if you cannot call out, you would need to keep trying. It will eventually catch but uh, not to mind, as long it is attended is what matters, not when,” he says.
“Mhm, that makes sense. Um, can I ask what the property is? Is it like a summer home or...”
“Ah, family inheritance,” he answers primly. “I’ve not much use for it past the sentimental value and I thought of leasing it for traveling parties but I’ve heard horror stories. Right now, I’m merely sitting on it until I figure out exactly what to do with it.”
“Oh, right. Wow. Quite the inheritance.”
“Hm, yes, my uncle did rather adore me. I was the only one named in his will but he was a bit of a curmudgeon.” He laughs. “Now, I must ask the most important question--”
Before he can, the door swings open and you jump in your seat. Your heart sinks. You signed the room out for ninety minutes. You thought it would be more than enough. Surely it hasn’t been that long.
Shoot. It’s him. How did he find you? You deliberately went out of your way so that he couldn’t.
“Jake,” you stand and turn to him, trying to block the computer. “What are you doing?”
“There you are,” he touches his chest as if he should be the one so afraid. “You didn’t come home--”
You growl and cross your arms.
“Jake, go away,” you grit out. “Not right now. Please.”
“I had to make sure you’re okay,” he steps into the room and you push yourself back against the table. “Who else is going to look after you?”
“I will scream, alright,” you warn. “Now leave me alone. I’m tired of telling you.”
He sighs and his jaw squares. “I don’t get you. You act like I’m such a bad guy and I haven’t done anything to you. I never hurt you but you hurt me. You just spit in my face--”
“Pardon,” the voice rises from the speaker at your back. “If I may, she is occupied and you are interrupting. I have a mind to contact emergency service should you persist.” Your mouth falls open and you turn to look at your laptop. James leans forward to glare at the lens, “Not sure who you are, fellow, but the lady has been clear.”
“Who-- who is he?” Jake sputters.
“Please, just go,” you plead. “Or I will call the police.”
Little good they will do, you think, but that doesn’t need to be said aloud.
He frowns and his eyes glint dangerously. You stare back at him, tense, fingers curling and uncurling nervously. That man on the screen won’t stop him and you don’t know if anyone would hear you from the desk.
“Fine, guess I’ll see ya around,” he relents and backs out.
You don’t move until he snaps the door shut. You hurry over and twist the lock on the inside. You don’t know why you didn’t do that before.
“Are you alright?” James asks, drawing you back to the desk.
You sit and look at the keyboard, “I’m very sorry. I...”
“He doesn’t sound like a friend,” James says. You shake your head. “Well, then, it does sound like you’re in need of a fresh start. I do hope this can be that for you.”
You look up and bat away the glimmer on the brims of your eyes. You’re not just afraid, you’re embarrassed. His kindness is as comforting as it is unexpected.
“Thanks, um, anyway...” you exhale, “you were going to ask something.”
“Yes, uh, yes, I was,” he reconfigures and puts another smile on. “When can you depart? I would of course arrange travel to be sure you get here safe and sound.”
“Oh, when... whenever is best. Not to be too desperate but as soon as possible,” you say.
“Wonderful,” he praises, “absolutely wonderful. Is tomorrow too soon? Pardon my own desperation.”
“Tomorrow?” You utter and shake your head. “Tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow.”
It's sudden and scary but it’s good. The sooner you go, the less time Jake has to figure out what you’re doing. The less chance he can follow. It’s an escape. Not a perfect one but it’s all you have.
🩸
You spend all night packing. You parse down what you have to the essentials and put the rest in bags. You don’t care about the furniture. You say as much in your email to your landlord, telling him to use your deposit for the disposal.
You whittle your life down to three bags. A large suit case, a knapsack, and a single purse. You have it ready to go by the door.
You feel uneasy about it. You stare at your luggage, the lights off, windows closed. Your phone buzzes and you put it to silent, ignoring the messages from your personal pest. You’ll be done with him too. You wonder if you should just toss your cell.
You don’t sleep. You can’t. You still can’t believe you’re getting out. You hope you haven’t given the game away.
There’s a tap on the window. You nearly roll onto the floor. You look over and hear it again, a harder impact. Are you serious? He’s throwing stones. He could break the damn glass.
You shake your head. You won’t fall for it. Not again. You remember when he came to your door and cried until you opened up. He even smeared ketchup on his face to make you think he was hurt. It’s hard to tell the difference through a peephole.
Almost there. Almost out. You just need to make it a few more hours.
As you ignore the incessant tapping and the light of your phone glowing ever few minutes, your thoughts turn bitter. You should message everyone who turned their back on you and tell them exactly what they’ve put you through. Somehow, you think they’d care as much as they did before.
Sleep eludes you but a foggy daze comes over you as the windows soften with the early morning. There’s no more pebbles bouncing off the pane. Just you and the buzz of the sleeping city.
Your alarm chimes and you get up as your head pulses. You’re used to the constant fatigue. It will ease up and you’ll just feel a bit heavy. When it’s normal, you don’t notice as much.
You get ready and have an instant coffee by the door. James messages just before nine. Your car will be there in ten. Oh, early. You don’t mind about that.
You won’t go out and wait. You’ll stay here, where it’s safe.
When your phone goes off again, you expect it to be Jake. It’s James. Whew. You’re so close, you can’t believe it.
You grab your knapsack and purse, and drag your suitcase out behind you. You lock the door and throw the key through the mail slot. You hurry down the hall and take the stairs over the elevator.
You don’t look back or anyway but forward. You look at your cell. 'Black Jaguar’ followed by a plate number. Jaguar? Holy moly.
The tinted window rolls down and reveals the same face from the Zoom call. You didn’t know he was coming himself. You assumed he was sending a cab or something. You slow as you come out the door. He smiles and pops open the door.
Before you can come forward, another figure appears, blocking your way.
“Hey, I've been calling all night,” Jake says. You stop short and nearly yelp. Of course!
“Jake, move.”
“Where are you going?” He looks at your bags desperately. “Wait, you can’t--”
“Pardon me, sir, is there some issue?” James strides up behind him.
Jake turns to face him and stiffens, “and who are you—wait, you’re that guy from the computer.”
“I’m none of your business, as is her life,” James insists. “Now, seems you’re used to picking on those smaller than you but let’s see how you do against me?”
James steps closer. He’s a few inches taller than Jake. You can’t move as they stare each other down. You wait, expecting chaos.
“I was only talking,” Jake shows his palms and shrugs. “It’s whatever. She’s a bitch anyways.”
He turns and snarls over his shoulder at you. You back up. As Jake turns, he’s knocked off kilter as James hurls his fist into his jaw. The shorter man staggers and falls to one knee, catching himself in the grass.
“Well, that was a lovely chat,” James smirks and beckons to you, “shall we?”

Wolfstar imagine where Sirius "Literally has Vanity in his Blood" Black loses it when Remus shows him his first muggle fashion magazine and sees the range of cosmetics.
Give me Sirius making a huge withdrawal from Gringotts in muggle currency, Remus saying "babe that's too much", but sighing and taking him to like... idk Sephora, and Sirius running up the craziest fucking bill at the makeup store.
Turns out he didn't withdraw too much, told you Moony.
They leave with a receipt so long it looks like they went to CVS. Fucking rich kids, what the fuck is this, you could buy a fucking car with this much money, Pads, what the hell.
Remus' rewards account that he made because there’s no way you’re just not getting the free points with this idiotic level of spending, you absolute clown, just use my number, don’t fucking waste them never runs out of points because it's the only phone number Sirius ever memorizes, and he always proudly says it to the cashiers.
Did you know they'll send physical catalogues to rich assholes who refuse to (or can’t) use the online catalogue? And that you can mail order parcels to a magical post distributor? Who transfers your mail to owls? And then your packages can reach Hogwarts? Remus knows, through his ridiculous fucking boyfriend who somehow keeps snagging those catalogues before he can burn them, Merlin knows how he can manage that but can't be bothered to finish his coursework, Pads. --Quit ruining my fun, Moony, I thought you liked ruining my makeup? Don't you like making a mess of me? Why do you hate joy?
They get gift baskets for being top spenders from both the store and from Sirius’ favorite individual brands. This is actually mortifying, Pads, stop laughing at me what the fuck even is this? What did they even send you? Christ.

Lacquer Brands
so one day I went to a fugue and wrote a 2000 word essay on nail polish brands
We got four tiers of nail polish brands: overpriced luxury bullshit, drugstore, boutique, and indie.
Overpriced Luxury Bullshit
Don’t buy these! Just don’t! You’re paying for name, not quality. Chanel charges $32 for an 11 ml creme, the second cheapest polish type there is. That’s ludicrous. Every review I’ve seen of a “high-brand” from a real swatcher has been negative. Fuck ‘em all.
Drugstore
This is every other mainstream brand, whether it’s from CVS, Walmart, or Ulta. Wide range of price and quality. In general, you’ll probably get what you pay for. Sally Hensen Insta-Dry is classic and Acceptably Okay; if you don’t have the patience for a full manicure, just slap some of that on. Look for brands that are 3-free or 5-free--that means that won’t have a few nasty chemicals. Anything over 5 is fake and doesn’t matter.
My preferred drugstore brands:
Zoya: Jellies, glitters, shimmers. Tends to have a very thin formula--leave the cap off for a few minutes to thicken it up.
Orly: Cremes! The absolute best, well-pigmented, buttery smooth cremes. Persistent Memory is my perfect dark red. The bottles are generously sized, they have a nice paddle brush, and I love the big rubberized cap. They’re just really pleasant!
OPI: I only use their matte top coat but I use a lot of it. It’s the best! Get their matte top coat! I’ve seen recs to use their polishes over Essie’s, but I’ve never tried either.
Boutique
Now we’re getting into the Good Shit. There’s a price jump here, but there’s also a huge jump in quality. These are small- to medium-sized online-only businesses with semi-industrial production and ample stock. They’re big enough to ship within a few days. They use a LOT more pigment and glitter than drugstore brands, and have far more variety in finishes.
You might see them on Amazon or Etsy--skip it and go order from their sites instead. Shipping costs the same and you can save up reward points.
Charmed Lacquer: Brand new, recently announced, will open in a week or two. Started by a streamer named Janixa. I’m not familiar, but her followers seem excited enough to check it out.
Cirque Colors: CONTROVERSY! I like Cirque. I have a ton of their polishes. A little pricey, but they have frequent small sales and are high-quality. Best known for the jellies and some really stunning magnetics like Mood Ring and Black Swan (which have since been rampantly duped). So why the controversy?
Mystery bags: idk people get het up about ‘em. I kind of feel like if you gamble on a bunch of polishes you don’t choose, you risk pruglies.
Coronation: This is a purple polish with a red-green shift shimmer pigment called, I shit you not, Unicorn Pee. UP was made unavailable for public sale years ago (the suspicion is that it’s now used in some currency). Cirque keeps finding stashes and re-releasing Coronation. There have been complaints that it’s not the same shade as the original, that it’s over-priced ($18.50 is a LOT for a polish), and the FOMO marketing. It always sells out fast. I have a bottle. It’s okay.
Jaritos: The current teapot tempest. Cirque just put out a Jarito-themed line of jellies that’s FOURTEEN FUCKIN FIFTY a bottle. Their regular jellies are two bucks less because JELLIES ARE CHEAP. They have less pigment than other finishes. Cirque has also been caught editing pics from swatchers. Some of the Jaritos shades are outright dupes of existing Cirque colors--but when Cirque reposted swatcher pics that compared them, they changed things to make them look different. Little shady!
I still got Mxcn Cola
Holo Taco: I don’t go to this school. It seems fine. Owned by a YouTuber with a pretty big following, Simply Nailogical. The brand has devoted followers, but I’ve never been real impressed. I feel like I can get everything they do somewhere else for a buck or two cheaper. Lots of limited-time bundles.
ILNP: MY LOVE! Shimmers, glitters, holos. Their formulas are just fantastic. If you follow lacquer reddits you’ll see a TON of posts featuring Flower Child and Fairy Dust; they aren’t for me but I see why people love them. They’re really good with shimmers--Flicker glows like a candle in a dark window. I also like their flakie toppers and magnetics. You really can’t go wrong with anything from ILNP.
One of the rare lacquer companies that doesn’t do FOMO. They never remove anything from their line-up. New collections get a 10% discount for a week at release, and they have an annual Black Friday sale.
KBShimmer: They’re pretty good! They don’t get as much love as I think they deserve--probably because they aren’t quite as flashy and highly-marketed as other brands. They also aren’t as heavily pigmented/glittered. Still pretty good though! I really love All Fired Up. They have big 15 ml bottles for only $12, no matter what finish. KBShimmer is a great place to start if you’re just dipping your toe beyond drugstore brands. Pick up their polish thinner (suitable for every brand except Orly) and glitter smoothing top coat.
Lights Lacquer: Don’t. They have some nice shades, though they tend to be as subdued as drugstore polishes. I was really disappointed by their cremes--the formula isn’t at all self-leveling. That’s just weird in this day and age. And then I found out that black swatchers refuse to work with them because the owner has been openly racist. Her non-apologies did not improve relations. Skip it.
Mooncat: CONTROVERSY! I have over a dozen Mooncat polishes and do love most of them, but it's getting harder to recommend the brand. They specialize in intense shimmer/glitter/holo/flakie/magnetics--all the fancy stuff. They have a few unique polishes that I haven’t seen duped elsewhere. Their formula can be gloopy, especially their flakies; easily fixed by a few drops of thinner. Why controversy?
they’re fukkin expensive bro. Like $15 a bottle. I do feel that you get what you pay for--it’s good stuff. I’ve never been disappointed by a Mooncat. But part of what you’re paying for is brand aesthetic.
they’re fukkin annoying bro. Their site, marketing, and even customer service emails are all lower-case dramatic gothy stuff. Never “nails,” always “claws.”
Their bottles keep shattering. This has happened occasionally in the past, then become more frequent starting in April. Seems like there was some supply change that thinned the glass. Mooncat was also filling about 14 ml instead of the promised 12 ml. Temperature and air pressure changes during shipping started to cause a lot of bottles to break. One person ended up in urgent care to get her hand stitched. Mooncat has promised to make changes and has been quick to refund/replace broken bottles, but there’s still a lot of ill-will simmering in the community. I think we’re past the tipping point--I’m no longer seeing broken bottle posts, just love for their new Power Puff Girls collab--but if you like something, I would wish list and wait another month. That should be enough time to make sure the bottles are safe and the weather has cooled.
Indies
Every single indie nail polish company is one or two people working out of their basement. That is not a joke. They hand-makes every small batch, fill the bottles, pack, and ship by themselves. That’s in addition to designing and testing polishes, and just living their lives.
That means that if you order from an indie, expect to wait. Most list a turn-around time of up to a month (they usually say 7-21 business days--people read three weeks but it’s a month). That’s padded to give them safety--nearly all will ship within a week, maybe two. But if they get hit with life stuff or a ton of orders, it really can take a while. My longest order took over a month arrive. It was entirely worth it.
Indies tend to have a big focus on fancy finishes. The biggest trend right now is sheer lacquers that are loaded with aurora shimmer. They’re color-shifty and glowy, and a lot of fun. That’s starting to stagnate a bit--every base color/shimmer combination has been done, so a lot of dupes are emerging--but it’s also starting to evolve. I’m seeing more and more shimmers that also have holo, flakes, or reflective glitter. I’m betting we’ll get some thermal shimmers as fall rolls in and temperatures drop.
Indies have some phenomenal variety and creativity. They’re doing the coolest stuff with the most love. Many also rely heavily on FOMO, and some are just plain not open much of the time. Instead, they have monthly or seasonal release windows. They usually drop a new collection and may retire old ones.
How do you keep track? The Reddit Laquerists (sic) Nail Polish Release Calendar. You can also subscribe to brand newsletters--most give a small coupon on your first order. A lot are on Instagram and Facebook.
There are at least two dozen indie brands, and it’s hard to know where to start. I highly recommend Lyn B. Designs. I love her lacquers, absolutely flawless formula. She has big bottles, fast turn-around, and lots of variety. Get her top coat! It’s the best. But most importantly, she has a 50% off code for ALL products every time she launches a new collection. You can get top-quality lacquers for $6 each, and the big top coat refill for $12.50. No brand of any size can match that value. You can either follow her on Facebook for the code or check the calendar on launch day.
Others I like, in no particular order:
Bee’s Knees, Dam, Polished for Days, Great Lakes Lacquers for fantastic shimmers and reflectives. Garden Path and Rogue Lacquers have great flakies. Lurid Lacquer is pretty new, and she’s doing some really interesting things with intense shimmers and color-shifty chromes. Sassy Sauce keeps a small, tidy line-up, but it’s all quality and creative stuff. She’ll also have some nice thermals once October hits--she doesn’t ship them during summer, which I respect.
Cupcake is kind of a workhorse brand like KBShimmer: nothing too spectacular, but everything is solid and reasonably priced. Likewise, Glisten & Glow isn't too exciting but IS cheap and high-quality. Emily de Molly is Just Good. Drunk Fairy has really nice jellies and cremes. Wildflower Lacquers is closed for rebranding, back 09/06; I don’t have any from her yet but I gotta give props for big bottles, a fan brush, and surviving in Oklahoma.
Death Valley Nails is a little pricey but they’re doing the weirdest, most absolutely unique shit out there. They’re making polish out of rocks and wildflowers. One looks like the sink after your boyfriend shaves. It’s great.
Clionadh gets some hype but IMO they’re overpriced and overrated. They definitely up the saturation on swatch pics. I’m unimpressed by Femme Fatale’s formula and teeny 9 ml size. Shleee polishes don’t self level at all. Stella Chroma still sells Harry Potter themed polishes and I'm very over that.
But really, the best way to check out indie brands is…
Indie Preorders
There are two big indie collabs every month that work on a pre-order basis: Polish Pickup and Hella Handmade Creations. They open for a week each month and feature unique, one-time only products from a ton of indie brands. They can cause major FOMO. If you feel that might not be healthy for you, stay away! But if you’re okay with the possibility that you may never be able to replace a bottle you finish off, you’ll find some great stuff. They’re an excellent way to explore new brands, and creators get to be a little experimental. PPU has fun monthly themes; HHC doesn’t have a general theme, but many creators do a series of fandom-themed designed. Indie polish creators tend to be pretty nerdy.
If you want to try non-US brands, go to Color4Nails.They’re a stockist that carries several brands, drugstore, boutique, and indie. They also have monthly pre-orders for a few Brazilian brands like Phoenix Indie Polish and Penelope Luz. I find the Brazilian brands to be a little pricey, with smallish bottles and fairly thin consistency, but they’re doing some interesting stuff. I’m pretty consistently impressed with Phoenix; PL less so.

Doctors Job Vacancy in the Middle East: A Promising Opportunity for European Medical Professionals
The healthcare industry in the Middle East is experiencing rapid expansion, with a growing demand for highly skilled medical professionals. Many countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain, are heavily investing in healthcare infrastructure, leading to an increasing number of doctors job vacancies in Middle East. This has created a golden opportunity for European doctors seeking career advancement, competitive salaries, and a high quality of life.
Why the Middle East is a Top Destination for Doctors
Several factors make the Middle East an attractive destination for European doctors. These include:
1. High Demand for Medical Professionals
The region is experiencing a shortage of highly qualified medical professionals, leading to an urgent need for experienced doctors in various specialties. This demand is particularly high in fields such as cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, radiology, and emergency medicine.
2. Competitive Salaries and Benefits
Doctors in the Middle East enjoy lucrative salary packages, often tax-free, along with other benefits such as:
Accommodation allowances
Health insurance
Travel allowances
Paid annual leave
Family sponsorship opportunities
3. State-of-the-Art Medical Facilities
Governments in the Middle East are making significant investments in healthcare, resulting in world-class medical facilities, advanced technology, and cutting-edge research opportunities. European doctors working in these environments can enhance their skills and gain valuable international experience.
4. Cultural Diversity and High Quality of Life
The Middle East is home to a diverse expatriate community, making it an appealing destination for foreign professionals. The region offers modern infrastructure, high standards of living, excellent international schools, and a range of entertainment options.
European Doctors Recruitment Agencies: The Role of Experts in Hiring
Finding the right job in the Middle East can be challenging without the right guidance. European doctors recruitment agencies play a crucial role in connecting skilled professionals with top-tier hospitals and clinics in the region. These agencies assist doctors in various aspects of the recruitment process, including:
Identifying suitable job opportunities
Assisting with licensing and credentialing
Providing visa and relocation support
Offering negotiation support for salary and contract terms
By working with a reliable recruitment agency, doctors can ensure a smooth transition into their new roles while focusing on their careers.
Hiring European Doctors in the Middle East: The Process
If you are a European doctor interested in working in the Middle East, here is a step-by-step guide to the hiring process:
1. Research and Choose the Right Recruitment Agency
Partnering with a trusted recruitment agency that specializes in hiring European doctors in Middle East is the first step. These agencies have established networks with hospitals and healthcare institutions, making it easier to find suitable positions.
2. Application and Documentation
Doctors need to prepare their CVs, highlight their qualifications, and submit necessary documents such as medical degrees, certifications, and professional experience records.
3. Licensing and Accreditation

Nobody asked about the gardener :) That's okay, I'm going to talk about her anyway. Only worse, because I left my translation at my grandparents' this evening, so I can't refer to what I actually did and thought about.
The problem is: Icelandic sagas have a problem with women. It's the classic lit problem. Woman? What's that? It bears the children, right? Maybe motivates a feud? That's a big part of why I like Laxdælasaga so much; academia conspiracy has it that it might have been written by a woman because it like, cares about what women think and experience. (It's also much more invested in emotional and character development, and has some really arresting... arrested moments.)
In this case, we're at the beginning of Hervor's saga and the men we have been following so far are all dying. Literally all of them. They decided to fight over a woman and they killed each other over her, leaving one man left to tell the tale of how he and his bro killed like twelve berserks and it was sick. And it is at this point that we get our biggest description of the woman in question:
Hvarf ek frá hvítri hlaðs beðgunni
Yeah, that's... that's it. Two lines to set her apart from all other women. Up until now she has existed as the daughter of an important man, and said that she would rather marry a man she knew to be good than one she had only heard of as evil.
So what does it say?
Literally: went I from the white one of the barn/courtyard bed-valkyrie/woman
C. Tolkein: I went away from that white maiden
I spent a long time on this one trying to figure out what beðgunni (well - beðgunnr) meant. The -gunnr part is interesting, because it's referring to women/valkyries using the Gunn- prefix from names - not a convention I had seen before (I haven't translated actual sagas before), but one the author uses again later with -varð (as in Hervarð) to mean men. This works with -varð particularly because our protagonist's name is Hervor and when she disguises herself as a man she goes by Hervarð, which is so similar -
- but I digress.
The beð- part is more interesting if you struggle with it. It means bed, but I knew the word for bed is sængr, so what's this word? Poetic? Cleasby-Vigfusson* says it can mean garden bed. Well in that case.
*CV is not a great dictionary, but it is free, online, and very easily searched, which makes it my go-to
I went from the white woman, the courtyard's garden bed-woman
(I spent some time deciding how to translate hvítri as well, and honestly I don't remember what word I used and I'm interested to look it up tomorrow, but I remember choosing something deliberately for its complicated modern connotations.)
And this now implies that she is in charge of decorating the courtyard, which is interesting! She has a hobby! She has an interest! She maybe even has a bit of responsibility, either from inclination or to practice running her household or maybe from aptitude. So if we choose to lean into this, to give her this tiny speck of personality that sagas never afford their women -
I went away from the white woman, the gardener
- we get a surprising degree of emotional return on investment.
#it's academically dishonest but it's interesting#and maybe just dishonest in the opposite direction from 'that white maiden'#I suppose you could also choose to get raunchy with it#but I don't know enough ON to have an idea what the connotations of beðr vs sængr

When I did my Master’s degree in journalism, up in Aberdeen, a part of the course was dedicated to a workplace placement, where you would go and work with a journalism-related establishment, in order to give you a bit of umph on your CV.
In the North East, I found this literary magazine called ‘Pushing Out the Boat.’ And I got in contact with the editor and told them I’d be interested in working with them for a couple of months.
They accepted. And so it seemed like a great catch.
So I met up with the editor, who was this older chap from England, and the co-editor, who was from Scotland – met them in town and they seemed like nice people and we got speaking and so on. And everything seemed like it was heading in the right direction.
I bought previous versions of Pushing Out the Boat, which was a journal of poems, essays and stories, and then I got in contact with the writers who had contributed to the contents.
Sending out emails, making phonecalls, recording interviews, writing up transcripts of interviews. All of which I sent to the editor. I was enjoying it. The main idea was for me to write up all of this material so that it could be used on the journal’s online blog. There was going to be a launch event for the next journal’s issue. So the journal was looking for ‘advertisement’, in a way, in preparation for the big event that was happening in the summer, the launch party.
And the editor simply never got back to me. With all of the stuff that I sent him.
Perhaps the content I sent along wasn’t for his liking? But I remembered him at the start being a soft-spoken nice guy who was encouraging and seemed interested in me.
And so I compiled this entire portfolio and then I went along to the launch party at the end of the month. One ‘nice’ thing the POTB people had done for me was to give me a complimentary free copy of the latest journal. So I met up with somebody who I’d never met before at the desk, this nice woman, who gave me said copy. She then directed me to where the editor was in the crowd.
There were maybe 200 people in the ballroom.
I found the editor and I went up to him and shook his hand.
The entire communicative moment with him lasted maybe 90 seconds, which was climaxed by him saying: “Thanks for coming. I’m very sorry but I have to go and speak to some other people for the moment. But I will see you later on.” And then he walked away from me. I didn’t see him later on.
Later in the semester I had to do a report on how my placement had been with the literary journal. And I needed a reference from one of the people at the institution, a quote from them to show that I had been there. It was a mandatory thing. I emailed the tutor to do it because I had no other correspondence apart from him. He emailed me back with one sentence, as to the reference I asked him for – a single sentence of maybe fifteen words – and that was it. That was my placement.

Important Life Side quests!
(No particular order)
1. Seizure/Epilepsy Training! (For free) By the Epilepsy Foundation it is an online module based program takes about 60-75 minutes but you will have three weeks to complete it. It will give you a Certification at the end after completing. Why this? It's important to know and quite interesting! Being seizure/epilepsy training certified also looks great on resumes and applications!
2. Food handlers card. Needed for any restaurant or fast food related job, and also generally helpful for at home cooking practices. Found efoodcard.com with a ~$7.99 fee. Online module based course regarding food safety practices. Is required for food related jobs and looks good on resumes and applications. When the course is complete you will have the certificate and 2 food handlers cards (one for you one for employer copies).
3. (If in the US) Memorize your social security number. It's asked for on almost all the important documents, often including hiring packets from employers.
4. Build your resume. This is more complex but if y'all are interested I can post separately an example! Important notes, keep it limited to one page, use only Harvard approved adjectives
5. Build a basic cover letter. Same as number four, I can post separately an example if it's wanted. But it is so much easier to modify a CV than it is to make a new one from scratch.
6. CPR/AED/First Aid training! Definitely important to know no matter your situation. But it is required for various jobs, and looks good on resumes and applications! Found online at RedCross.org with a ~$37.99 fee, you will have a certificate and an expanded knowledge bank at the end of the course!
(edited addition!) 7. Getting a passport! Never know where you will find yourself in the future and in the US these take up to 6 months to process and get back to you.

Faceclaim/Actress: Auli'i Cravalho
Personality:
Initially, Beatrix is polite and cordial, she’s more than open to the thought of making friends but is not naive to think that everyone she encounters is good. She’s a good person to have in your corner, as she cares deeply about her friends and is always willing to lend a hand (or to help them with their homework). A chess prodigy, she tends to compare some aspects of life to a game of chess, she is quite perceptive and is easily able to tell whether or not someone is lying while also being a master of persuasion herself.
At times, she can come across as morbid and detached but really she's just socially awkward. Not much fazes her and what most people would find disturbing or fearful fascinates her and she would want to learn everything about it. She's rather adventurous for a Ravenclaw but that's mainly due to her insatiable curiosity and the fact that her mind tends to be moving a mile per minute so she needs to do something to distract herself so that she doesn't do something even more dangerous.
Beatrix is very intelligent and ambitious, despite being put in Ravenclaw, she shows and exhibits many traits of a Slytherin but her most noticeable trait is her wit, she loves a good mystery and enjoys solving puzzles and riddles which goes hand and hand with her habit of dungeon exploring and tomb raiding, something her parents had instilled in her from a young age. Like her father, Beatrix has a bit of a mischievous streak but it's more playful than anything malicious, she likes to tease her friends and playfully call them out. That's not to say that she doesn't have a dark side, she most certainly does given everything that she's been through, it just takes a lot to bring it out but when it does, one should be absolutely cautious around her if they don't want to get hurt.
Always the calm, cool, and collected leader as well as a genius strategist, it's rare to see Beatrix upset or angry and when she does, it's jarring (and honestly quite frightening) to see. Beatrix has a bad habit of suppressing her emotions and tends to do most things on her own even if the situation calls for more than one person. It's less that she doesn't want help and more like she's scared to ask for help and with trying to catch up with the rest of the 5th years, competing the Keeper's Trials, and the constant threat of Loyalists, Poachers, and Ashwinders does not help at all, fortunately, this is something she acknowledges and is trying to work on.
☾ Family ☽
Vincent Luxiem; Father, Deceased - A pureblood wizard of a wealthy family, former Slytherin and a researcher of ancient magic, Vincent was an enigma to the people around him and even his peers, he was a quiet man but by all means not shy, in fact, he had quite the wicked mischievous streak. He was intelligent and charismatic and definitely had no shortage of admirers during his time as a student. He was endlessly fascinated with history and archaic forms of magic, often sneaking out of the castle to go exploring ruins and tombs, he found himself mentors in Eleazar and Miriam Fig who he would soon grow to see them as family. Despite having multiple admirers, he found true love in Sorina Albescu who was just as obsessively in love with him as he was with her, the two of them quickly getting married shortly after graduation. He and Sorina had made names for themselves as famous treasure hunters and tomb raiders, discovering many lost artifacts and revealing lost information and history.
Fiora Dalca/Sorina Luxiem (née Albescu); Mother, Deceased - A pureblood witch from Romania, a complete enigma of a woman, little to no information on her before coming to Hogwarts in her 5th year as a Ravenclaw can be found. A bright woman who at times could get a tad bit manic but was optimistically curious about the world around her (both muggle and wizarding worlds) and was often found in places she wasn't supposed to be in or situations that weren't ideal however, that never stopped her, in fact, one would say that it caused her to be all the more intrigued with the world around her. Sorina also had a few admirers but none of them had captured her attention and stolen her heart like Vincent Luxiem, immediately falling head over heels for him, fortunately, the feeling was mutual. She and Vincent had made names for themselves as famous treasure hunters and tomb raiders, discovering many lost artifacts and revealing lost information and history.

Eleazar Fig; Mentor (Adoptive Grandfather), Deceased - After her parents' deaths, Beatrix was taken in by Eleazar per Vincent's final wish, stating that should anything happen to him and Sorina, he would want Fig to take care of Beatrix, knowing that she would be in good hands under his care. Despite their rocky start, Beatrix slowly grew attached to Fig and Fig, having saw Vincent as a son, gradually began to see Beatrix as a granddaughter. Their bond only grew stronger when he began to mentor Beatrix and in private, she calls him 'grandfather' which always warms Fig's heart.

☾ Background ☽
Beatrix Miriana Luxiem was born on August 27th, 1875 to Vincent and Sorina Luxiem in London, England, a wealthy family and a prominent bloodline in the wizarding world due to being direct descendents of Rowena Ravenclaw, something that Beatrix wouldn't truly understand until she grew older and started her 5th year in Hogwarts. Her birth was unexpected as it was confirmed by many doctors that Sorina was infertile, something that crushed both her and Vincent as they wanted nothing more than to have a child to love, spoil, and share their knowledge and passions with. So when it was revealed that Sorina was miraculously pregnant, they saw it as an absolute miracle. Despite growing up as an only child, Beatrix had never once felt lonely, her parents loved her immensely and she loved them just as much, plus, she found more comfort with her pets, a kneazle Calcifer and a hebridean black dragon Vasile, even when she didn't show signs of having magic at a young age, something that did make her parents worry but never blamed her for, understanding that it something that was out of her control but the more Beatrix grew, the more concerned her parents became, especially since she kept having intense nosebleeds and awful headaches that would leave her in physical pain and bedridden for hours.
Concerned and frightened for her wellbeing, Vincent and Sorina would take her to every medical professional in the wizarding world that would help her, including Gerard Fleuret, a good friend of theirs and family member and also a reputable healer. Beatrix would become good friends with his children (and her cousins), Roman, Raphael, and Violetta. Unfortunately, there was no cure for her mysterious affliction, most couldn’t even describe what was wrong with her, the best they could hope for was that she would grow out of it when she gets older. Fortunately, her nosebleeds and headaches did slow down as she grew up but at age 12, Beatrix still didn't show any signs of having magical abilities, deeming her as a squib, neither Vincent or Sorina cared about that as Beatrix was their pride and joy, magical powers or no. However, that would soon be the last of Beatrix's worries as her world would come crashing down on one fateful day. What was supposed to be a normal house visit from Gerard immediately took a turn for the worst when three armed assailants broke into the Luxiem mansion with the intentions of killing Vincent and selling Sorina and Beatrix to the black market. Despite putting up a fight, Vincent and Sorina were sadly killed in front of Beatrix who was too terrified to even think of running away.
It was Roman who saved her, as Beatrix was tied up and gagged on the floor while the men were thinking their next move, they didn't notice Gerard and Roman showing up and seeing the murder scene. Gerard, horrified, explicitly told Roman to hide somewhere safe while he went to go get the authorities. Roman, who knew that it would be too late by the time anyone from the Ministry would arrive, took matters into his own hands, however, he didn't stop the men with magic...
By the time Gerard and a group of officers from the Ministry came back, they were shocked and horrified at the sight of Roman and Beatrix covered in blood huddled together. It was then revealed that Roman had physically killed two of the assailants while Beatrix had killed the last one. It was a terrifying and confusing situation but the Ministry decided to let Roman and Beatrix go free given how young they were and labeled the incident as self defense, but now a new problem had arisen.
Now an orphan, Beatrix had nowhere to go nor did she had anyone to turn to, along with the fact that she was considered to be a squib, the odds were looking to be less in her favor. Her saving grace came in the form of Eleazar Fig who became her caretaker and legal guardian after it was revealed to be Vincent's last wish in his will. At first, it was quite awkward, as Fig had never raised a child and Beatrix was still grieving over the loss of her parents. It wasn't until her 13th year that things began to change, this time for the better, Beatrix had finally unlocked her magical abilities...by setting the kitchen on fire whilst making a meal. Despite his ruined kitchen, Fig was happy and Beatrix was ecstatic and so very relieved, with the approval of Headmaster Black and Professor Weasley, it was decided that Beatrix would start Hogwarts in her 5th year but in the meantime, Fig would mentor and train her to hone her magical abilities.
On September 1st, 1890, now 15 years old, Beatrix Luxiem begins her 5th (technically 1st) year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, unaware of the perilous journey she would go on as she discovers her connections to an ancient magic and the legacy her parents left behind for her all while trying to stop a war-threatening rebellion.

☾ Misc & Trivia ☽
Beatrix's conception was partially a result of ancient magic, on one of their particularly riskier adventures, Sorina had accidentally interacted with an ancient magical artifact which had allowed her-for a certain period of time-to become fertile. So in a way, Beatrix is quite literally born from ancient magic.
Due to the ancient magic flowing within her as well as her natural magical abilities as a pureblood witch, it was simply too much power for Beatrix to handle as a child, it created a sort of blockage which as a result was the reason why Beatrix was such a "late-bloomer".
Despite now having magical prowess, Beatrix still suffers from nosebleeds and headaches once in a while. They become more frequent the more she pushes herself and becomes more stressed or if she tries to repress herself. On the other hand, should she get too angry or if her emotions are at an all time high, she is able to do catastrophic damage but will unable to get her magic under control which resulting Beatrix having to monitor her emotions at nearly all times.
Her eyes glow red sometimes as a result of the ancient magic in her body.
Beatrix struggles heavily with depression and suicidal thoughts, this primarily stemmed from the deaths of her parents. Of course, she never has told anyone of this and tries to distract herself from her intrusive thoughts, half of the time it works.
Beatrix's favorite poet is William Blake due to Vincent reading her various poems to help her fall asleep. Sorina, however, instilled a love for mystery and adventure into her by telling her stories of her and Vincent's adventures..Sometimes Beatrix herself will quote William Blake just for fun.
Beatrix is a beautiful singer however, since the death of her parents, she rarely sings anymore.
Beatrix's most prized possession is a black Queen chess piece from her favorite chess set her father gave to her on her 10th birthday.
Beatrix hates having her hair styled in an updo other than a ponytail, it's unknown why she does but she much prefers having her hair down or in a ponytail if she has to have it up.
Aside from chess, Beatrix is a fencing prodigy and skilled at playing the violin.
Beatrix has a love for dragons and felines and at one point when she was young, had snuck 16 stray cats into the Luxiem Estate.
Beatrix is the one who designed the Investigation Team's logo.
Beatrix is the ancestor of Katrina Lyon (HPHM MC) and Levi Vanrouge (HPMA OC)

omg how did you land your job? it sounds like something i’d like to do bc i can do anything on time from my house but i’m not reliable to show up everyday because of my symptoms :((
i’m so happy you found something that works for u 💗
thank you!! <3 tbh it was a super slow and gradual process - im a copywriter/digital marketer btw but basically a few years ago i started building a freelance copywriting portfolio as a side job and kind of developing my digital media, content management/design + photoshop skills (all using free online resources, guides and writing articles literally just writing copy in google docs) and then finally after a few months i got a job interning at a digital marketing agency (i think it was at the start of 2022), worked there for months until the contract ended and then started sending my copy out to random freelance agencies that were hiring on for copywriter positions on indeed and got a bunch of freelance work to tide me over while i interviewed for full-time positions, got rejected 8392392 billion times and just did freelance + TA jobs (im qualified in childcare nd that was my main gig before this) until i finally found a place that was willing to take me on after 3 interviews in mar 2023.....i think putting literally any skills you have on your resume and honestly just totally overselling yourself and your abilities is the way to go lol like obviously dont say you have a PHD if you dont but i thought for a long time i could only put education-based skills and certificates on there until i started branching out into the world of freelance and just saying fuck it.....very hard and long process and ultimately i still got lucky that this current company chose to take me on but yeah it was a lot of curating my abilities outside the conventional path. if you can volunteer anywhere doing admin or website management that would look great on your resume as well like truly. also if you have any sort of careers advice services in your area plzzzzzz utilise them as they helped me a lot with learning how to market myself and making my CV more attractive and all that crap. wishing you luck and sending a massive hug <3
