Premier Danielle Smith intends to strengthen the little-known Alberta Bill of Rights this fall to include protections for people who refuse to be vaccinated, but she's facing heavy pressure from United Conservative activists to go much farther in her overhaul, CBC News has learned.
A group from the premier's riding in Medicine Hat, which calls itself the Black Hat Gang, has met with senior government officials and proposed a massive new draft of Alberta's rights document. The "gang" wants it to enshrine an array of new rights, including confidentiality of health information and "informed consent" to medical care, as well as rights to keep and bear firearms, to use "sufficient force" to defend one's property, and "freedom from excessive taxation."

I just looked at a survey of how many in Europe would, if they could, vote for Harris vs. Trump (look up "novus Harris vs. Trump). The fact that Europe would overwhelmingly vote for Harris is already a red flag in my eyes about Trump. They knew Trump would be bad, and here we are...
Definitely! But Trump supporters would see this as a positive thing because they're all about "America first" and have convinced themselves that the richest and most influential country in the world is somehow being ripped off by our closest allies. If other countries don't like Trump, that only proves to them how good he'll be for America!
I do want to be clear that this take is just completely ludicrous!
We import more from other countries. Often, that's because our country is profiting from countries that provide goods that can only be made there, or because they have cheaper labor. Yes, the US citizens have lost certain manufacturing jobs. But that allows us to get goods at affordable prices.
You will find few places in the world with a quality of life as high as the US, and that's in large parts due to our trade deals.
And it's not like we've been hurting for jobs either. Joe Biden saw the US with the lowest unemployment rate in 55 years.
Our economy doesn't need a massive influx of what will likely be minimum wage manufacturing jobs!
In fact, an influx of positions we can't fill might end up lowering wages.
I won't sit here and say that everything is perfect. It's obviously not! But in general, our trade agreements have allowed Americans to get fat, both figuratively and literally, off of the labor of other countries. Very few Americans have experienced true starvation because food and clothes are fairly affordable here! At least compared to the countries where we get our goods from.
A rising tide raises all ships!
Free trade is good for everyone! It has kept products in the US affordable to our citizens! It's created jobs in other countries!
It's also provided soft power to build healthy relationships with other countries.
When the Twin Towers were attacked, the world rallied around us and joined the war in the Middle East.
Would they still do that today with Trump placing tariffs on all of our allies? With Trump threatening to annex Greenland and Canada? I don't think so!
If there's another 9/11-style attack on US soil, I don't think NATO will rush to our aid. And they shouldn't. In a matter of months, good will and close bonds that have been built up for generations have been decimated.
And if anyone overseas is reading this and sees Trump as some anomaly that doesn't represent the American people, the "American first" attitude that has driven this very much does. It's why he was elected! And Trump is doing exactly what he promised to.
The American people need to hurt to be educated on the importance of free trade. They need to learn what it's like to starve. Hopefully, this won't get to the level of another Great Depression before Americans realize that actually having free trade is good and that other countries aren't ripping us off by selling good to us at affordable prices.
Americans have always taken our allies for granted. Now, a good portion of us see those allies as adversaries for providing services that have generally benefited us.
And I believe the people who think that way will only learn otherwise through their own self-inflicted suffering. Through seeing what happens when our allies don't support us anymore.
They need to see their 401K crash. They need to see their companies bankrupted. They need to see the price of goods skyrocket. Then maybe we can rise from the ashes of the Trump economy with a fresh appreciation of our allies and for what global trade does for us.

If Trump thinks he can compete with China by undermining the trust of U.S. allies, behaving like a Gulf imperialist, dismantling USAID, shutting down the Voice of America, challenging the country's laws, and withdrawing from various UN agencies, then he is mistaken.
