reading ibong mandaragit made me realized that every major character character in el fili was flawed in a way that made simoun's revolution impossible to begin with.
of course we have the man simoun himself, who had no visible plan other than kill everyone.
makaraig, sandoval, and juanito are people absolutely ready to become a traitor
pecson and tadeo genuinely did not gaf
we absolutely know nothing about kabesang tales, but from the shit I've read it feels like rizal isn't portraying him as a guerilla or a revolutionary
huli is dead
isagani, despite having the most potential during el fili, is still shown to dive headfirst into fantasy and delusions.
basilio seemed to be perfectly happy by living a quiet life with the status quo and only seemed to court the idea of revolution revolution after his shit rocked by simoun's assholery
of course i absolutely see the potential that isagani basilio and penitente have to turn into actual revolutionary figures, but during el fili they're all still searching for themselves, they're all still eggs in el fili waiting to hatch into actual revolutionaries.

Kabanata 2: Live-Posting
Jesus, I would not want to be in the lower deck. The description alone makes me think it would reek like hell
Dressed in complete black, you say? Basilio, you fucking emo kid
The fact that he was already famous for doing medical stuff makes me think that he'd probably be fine after El Fili
Also, Rizal, why the hell did you name TWO of your characters "Basilio" without giving either of them last names
Ah, the opium addiction
"And the student Basilio filled out his meaning by going through the pantomime of striking his fists together." The image that produces looks so fricking cute
Makaraig's one trait in the book is that he's rich
Knowing what happens to Isagani and Paulita later, all I can say is, yikes
Tbh, I thought that Don Tiburcio would have a bigger role in the book
"Don Basilio" Huh, for some reason that feels a little strange to read
I know the symbolism behind the water and beer talk, but imagining them acting it out looks lowkey goofy
Once again, those fucking blue goggles, not even glasses, they're goggles
And here we get confirmation that Irene is a plastic bitch
Goddamn, that introduction for Padre Florentino got me hooked
At least there are some decent priests in this story
Jesus Christ, his story makes me sad
“If you don’t do so, the friars will think that you don’t want to associate with them.”
Gee, who could ever guess why Florentino wouldn't want to be seen around them? 😑
Tbf, who would want to talk to Victorina?

Makaraig: Why?
Pecson: If only there was someone out there who loved you.

A long long time ago when I was taking my UPCAT in Los Baños, I observed different types of exam takers that the modern exam takers might never see again:
1. "Pinangarap ko 'to"
Na-romanticise nya ang college, too bad hindi sya nakakuha ng college hack lessons from el fili. Matalino at masipag, idealistic at passionate. Parang engot na ngumingiti sa Oblation. (ex. Isagani. Period)
2. "Alumni dito parents ko"
Anak ng abugado and/or doctor. The pressure is real and dala-dala parin ang UPCAT review textbook. Meron na syang UP paraphernalia. (ex. Makaraig)
3. "Alumni dito parents ko" pt. 2
Walang pake, pero pressured ng parents. Gusto lang mag LaSalle/Ateneo for sports and lifestyle. Meron na syang DLSU/ADMU paraphernalia. (ex. Placido Penitente)
4. "Porma palang aktibista na"
Not to be confused with the real activist, these people might not even know about human rights and agrarian reform. Gusto lang nila yung passion and aesthethics. Bakit ba? Once they learn how hard it actually is to be an activist, they will probably become pro-government and tell everyone activism is just a phase cuz it happened to them.
5. "Matalino ako, peasants"
No joke, hindi noon uso ang rubiks cube and I saw about 2 different guys with glasses na nakahiwalay from the crowd solving rubiks cube. Would sometimes look at others for validation.
6. "The rest"
Aka, me and most exam takers. So damn unprepared na sumuko nalang. (ex. Juanito Pelaez, but poor)

Oo.

addendum to the timeline thing.
Made a short revision to K17-K19's date since @stephending rightfully pointed out that K24 literally begins by stating that its a Thursday.
All that needs to be done is to consider the events of Quiapo Fair (K17-K19) would happen by the midnight of January 11, making it a Sunday. (Or fuck it! just think that Rizal forgot to add another to his 2, maybe he mean't for it to be a 3 who knows?)
Also, the end of Valeriano Weyler's term as Captain-General does not have any impact on the El Fili Captain-General's departure, so it all still ends in May.
(1891)
K20-K23 happens all within the same day, January 13
K24-K25 happens within the same day, January 14
K26-K27 happens within the same day too, January 15
K28 happens on January 16 whilst covering parts of the following days in the end
K29 happens on January 17, also following following K28's route of also covering the following days in the end.
onwards it seems to be a little garder, the gaps between chapters seem to spans weeks/months now instead of just days/hours.
K30, similar to K4 covers a wide span of events, although pinpointing main dates are more difficult than K4. K30 happens most likely within the span of January 18 to January 31
K31 happens atleast a week after K26, evident by K31 stating that Isagani was freed a week after the events. K31 most likely happens within the span of January 23 to 31.
K32 has the longest timespan of all. I'm personally gonna count the date of when Makaraig was freed as the jumping off point, so K32 most likely happens within the span of January 16 all the way up to April 31.
K33 until K39 do share the precise time gaps that the beginning chapters had, although no other mention of a date other than Basilio mentioning "four months ago."
I'll be an ass and just say that just because Basilio said "four months ago," that it actually takes place literally four months after K27.
Thanks to my brilliant assumptions, K33-K35 happens on May 15.
K36 begins on May 15, however most of it's contents likely happen on May 16.
K37 happens on May 16.
K38 is more ambiguous, it could happen between May 15 to May 17. Although it could actually just happen any time of May, I just thought it would make sense if this was just part of Matangláwin's march to Manila.
K39 is clearer, it happens on May 17, two days after K35, the Captain-General has left the country and Simoun's gay twinkdeath ass is dying in Padre Florentino's grave.

Padre Millon: Yes, but when was that?
Juanito: Last time I saw him? It was definitely the time I saw him last.
