This mission had been very tough. You trusted Guy with everything you had. Not to mention you were deeply in love with the man in question. But the two of you are caught fighting one of the worst criminals out there. A kunoichi with a poison specialty. She’s been toying with the two of you.

“Take this!” She shouts as she uses one of her attacks against you.

Immediately you feel warm all over. Your heart races and your throat feels dry. She laughs as she runs off, leaving you and Guy at a loss. But you would care about this more if you hadn’t been hit with one of her most potent attacks.

At first you think you’ve been poisoned. The more it hits you, the more you realize what’s actually happened. She hit you with a pretty strong aphrodisiac. And at this very moment, your teammate is rushing over to you to see if you’re alright.

“Hey! Are you okay?! What happened?!” He’s so worried for you, and usually you’d keep these feelings tucked away, but you feel need pooling deep inside of you as you listen to the concern in his voice.

You try to push him away, which only seems to make him pull you closer. The hand on your forehead makes you shudder. He looks at you, his eyes softening. He doesn’t like the way you look right now.

“Let me get you somewhere safe,” he says but it’s not long before you're gripping on the collar of his jumpsuit. He stops and looks at you.

“P-please…Guy…”

He watches as you twitch and jerk in his hold. Then the look in your eyes seems to tell him everything he needs to know. You let out a low moan when he brings you over to a more private spot in the trees.

“What did she hit you with?” He asks, unzipping your flak vest. You whine as his long fingers brush against your chest.

“A-aphrodisiac.” You manage to mutter. 

Guy looks at you, and he can confirm that you seem to be aroused. It’s not like you’re begging for him to finish you off so that the poison can’t hurt you even more. You’re practically begging him to help you with this little problem instead with just the look on your face.

“So you need me to…”

Synopsis: With your kekkai genkai, you were the perfect candidate for a secret, underground mission to expose the gritty underground of the Hidden Sound. Might Guy, however... you didn’t understand that choice.

You were to leave in the dead of night, as was traditional for the shinobi. 

You packed the day you received your assignment from Tsunade and then you waited, waited, and waited, for the mission day to finally arrive. It had been a long and restless few days. You holed yourself up in your apartment, your mission pack leaned against the wall of your front door as you spent your days thumbing through the mission file. 

The edges of the paper had begun to crease from your tight grip on the paper. Sparks of chakra singed edges of the information as you silently seethed. 

Maito Gai of all people. 

Maito Gai. 

The loudest, most indiscreet shinobi on the force sent on such an important, undercover mission with you. Ibiki Morino was personally grooming you to be his replacement as head of the Torture and Interrogation Force and the one Tsunade sent as your second was Maito Gai. It wasn’t wise to question Lady Tsunade’s decision, but you could still resent your reality in the comfort of your own home. Her words— her doubt in your skill— set your chest on fire.

You slipped into your civilian clothes almost two hours before your scheduled meeting time with Gai. You took in a deep breath, holding it within your chest before letting out a slow stream of air from your puckered lips. Your movements stopped as you breathed, the little meditation quelling the pressure in your chest for just a moment before you continued to dress.

You stared at yourself in the reflection of your mirror, tucking your last bit of hair into your bandana. The closet door of your room sat slightly ajar. Just to the side of your face you could see your own ANBU uniform peeking out at you. It sagged, wrinkled and unused. You saw your own face contort into a sneer.

Maito Gai was never in the ANBU.

You rocked in your slippers. You were so used to your uniform-issued boots and without your hitai-ate, your head felt light and empty. In the darkness, you donned your travel pack. It lacked weight thanks to the hidden sealing runes painted into the inner fabric. 

You let the door to your apartment shut behind you silently and unceremoniously. Your palm lingered on the wood behind you as the material pushed against your supply pack. As empty as it was, you could practically feel the door through the durable leather, as if your own apartment door was telling you to go. 

The sky was still dark. You would barely even call it morning. You slipped through the darkness, footsteps not even making a sound as you trudged down the village streets. A few scattered lanterns lit your way. Without the security of your tactical vest, the air felt cold against your skin. You adjusted your gloves as you approached the meeting point. 

The vague outline of Maito Gai stood stall underneath the entry arch. He stretched, waving his arms back and forth as his limbs jotted out in awkward ways and directions. The sight made you stop in your tracks. Gai knelt down on the dirted ground, making grunts of effort as he performed various warm-ups. You approached him, trying to muster up the will to advance to his chorus of “hahs” and “huahs.” 

For once, he did not don his signature green jumpsuit. His off-white outer shirt flowed loosely around his joints as he continued to wave about wildly. An olive colored undershirt bunched itself around his elbows. It was odd seeing Gai in garments that were so strikingly dissimilar to what he usually wore, but you supposed you would take odd over flashy and embarrassing any day. 

“You’re early,” you said stiffly. Gai stumbled back, caught off guard by your sudden presence. His arms waved about once again and you wondered for the umpteenth time that morning how you were partnered with such a person in the first place. 

“No, not at all.” Gai glanced at his wrist. He wasn’t wearing a watch. 

You let out another sigh. You had hoped to have some time to yourself to settle your nerves before your mission. 

“Well if you’re ready, we might as well head out.” You rolled your eyes, pushing past him as you headed through the gate.

“Ready as I’ll ever be!” he exclaimed.

You didn’t wait for any other cue. You didn’t even wait for Gai himself before you started off towards the forest. You ran up the nearest tree and sprang into a front flip. The branch shook lightly as you landed, hardly turning before you began to skip along the trees. You made it a point not to look back. If he was a competent partner, he would be able to keep up. The two of you, after all, had quite the journey ahead of you.

The forest was as dense as ever. You whirled around the intricate maze of branches, the breeze rippling in your ears. Gai shouted something behind you which only caused you to speed up your course. You only had so much time that you could travel through the trees before you would approach the Hidden Sound and have to travel on foot. And with traveling on foot, you knew would no doubt come incessant talking.

Gai appeared in front of you at the direction of two o’clock, completely upside down as he sailed through the air. He mouthed something that you couldn’t have made out even if you wanted to. A few droplets of saliva flew from his lips which you narrowly evaded with acrobatics of your own. You sped up with a scowl, leaving Gai in the dust to crash. 

You gripped the first branch that obstructed your way. Using it for support, you channeled your momentum through the forest. You vaguely heard Gai as you free fell head first down into the foliage. You caught another branch and launched yourself back into the air like a trapeze artist with a burst of chakra. 

There was nothing more freeing than being a kunoichi. 

But Gai was persistent.

He appeared next to you, oblivious and matching your pace.

“WE SHOULD—” Gai yelled over the air current. —“TALK ABOUT THE MISSION!”

You sprang ahead, pretending not to hear and Gai followed hot on your heels. 

But the sensation struck you all at once. You stopped suddenly on a sturdy branch. Gai stopped by your side. His goofy features had sobered, something that you’d dare call a frown tugging at the corners of his lips. 

“What are you sensing—”

— “Shh!” You held a finger up to your lips, looking off into the forest. By now, the two of you had made it deep into the trees. You closed your eyes, focusing your energy in an attempt to locate what else— or better yet— who else was with you. Gai pivoted next to you, searching for any sign of danger.

You both came to the same conclusion in an instant. The leaves below barely began to rustle before you and Gai immediately scattered into the canopy. You splayed yourself on your stomach across a mass of high branches, hidden by the thick leaves. You spied Gai hidden similarly about forty feet away. 

Two shinobi landed on the branch below where the two of you just were. The branch rustled in response to their sudden weight. You sized them up quickly. Both appeared to be men of average height and build. Green pigmented cloth bindings adorned patches of skin that would have been otherwise exposed by the short sleeves of their vests. You probably could have made an educated guess as to what they had stocked in their hip packs and how many of each.

They lingered as you eyed them, hidden from above. The two foreign shinobi exchanged some silent hand signals of a code you didn’t understand before they swiftly disappeared.

You remained in the canopy, alert. You took manual control of your breathing, focusing on the slow, unnatural movement of the air in and out of your lungs. The sweat from your palms turned the kunai in your hand into an uncomfortable, warm mass. You didn’t even remember drawing it, the motion had long since become a habit.

It was only after a handful of moments of silence and stillness that you knew that the shinobi had moved on. Both you and Gai appeared on the ground below. A few leaves fluttered down from the treetops. Gai wrinkled his forehead in confusion. 

“Were those…”

“Sound shinobi,” you answered before he could finish. You placed your kunai back into your hidden holster. “We’ve barely made it out of the village.” You looked in the direction from which you came, a subtle expression of worry written across your features. 

Leaping as quickly as you were through the trees allowed you to cover quite a bit of ground. Even if you wanted to turn back to the village, returning the distance you were away would take a bit of time. But even so, you would estimate that you were hardly halfway to the border of the Land of Rice. Hell, you probably weren’t even a quarter way to your destination. 

“We should notify someone that there are enemy scouts lurking so deep in the forest,” Gai said, crossing his arms, “It’s concerning how close they are. Perhaps it might so happen that you and I have just stumbled upon a conspiracy…” 

“You’re not suggesting we turn back.” The words blurted from your lips with an accusatory tone, taking on the guise of a statement more than a question. Tsunade’s stoic face immediately popped into your mind. 

Gai placed both of his hands on his hips as he tilted his head towards the canopy above. He blew a steady stream of air from his lips, causing them to vibrate against each other. 

“The attack on the chūnin exams could have been stopped if enemy forces weren’t allowed to set up their attack hidden in the surrounding forest…” He trailed off almost as if he hadn’t completed his thought. Gai’s words made you hesitate. Despite your eagerness to continue, your willingness to protect your home came before both your pride and your fear of disappointing Tsunade. 

“We still can’t abandon our mission… They’re expecting us, and if we don’t show up, we might not get another chance at this information.” You eyed Gai in your peripheral. “But if you went back to warn the village, I could take care of the mission.” Gai immediately shot up, gesturing wildly your way.

“You make a great point!” he exclaimed. You sighed in relief as you placed a hand on your chest. Maybe things would work out in your favor after all.

“I’m glad you think so—”

“Summoning jutsu!” 

The air suddenly erupted in a cloud of white smoke. As it cleared, you looked around for Gai’s summon. When it did not appear in front of you, you looked up. Perhaps it was a bird. Then you looked down, and sure enough, a tiny turtle— about the size of your hand— sat on the ground below. Gai crouched down to talk to the summon which hadn’t completely poked its head out of its shell. 

Before you had a chance to comment, he scooped it up into his palm. He turned it over a few times in his hand before revving up and chucking the summon into the trees in a single, swift curveball throw. Night still covered the sky, but even so, the turtle was enveloped quickly by the darkness. Your jaw dropped. You just about ran after the creature considering the sheer velocity of Gai’s swing. 

“There!” Gai’s jolly laugh boomed from behind you. “My messenger turtle will make sure that our message will get back to the Leaf lickity split!”

Your heart just about sank in your chest. You turned back to face Gai slowly. He beamed, making his way towards you with his thumbs pointed up. It was then that you noticed another thing. He leaned just the slightest bit forward.

“With shinobi of the Sound in these woods, it would probably be best to keep a low profile, don’t you think?” Gai pulled back before you could pick a fight with him about how close he was. He smiled, retreating backwards into the forest. He spun. “I’ve always been one for a hike!” Gai’s thundering voice scared off a few birds. 

So much for keeping a low profile.

So much for avoiding Maito Gai.

Long Note: I know a lot of people followed this. If I'm being candid, this was my second fanfic of all time and it grew along with my writing ability. I felt like it had no direction, Gai wasn't even really a character in the original version, and the quality was just all over the place. I'm doing my best with this. I made this rewrite because I really wanted to deliver a good product to everyone who really enjoyed it, but it's also a story I came up with more than 2 years ago that I'm trying to make work in a way my original draft didn't.

I know quite some time can go by, but my stuff isn't abandoned. There's just a lot of it (I think I have over 10 series in the works just because I'm just a passionate person) and I have other life stuff. My blog really started in the pandemic, so it makes complete sense why I'm not as diligent now.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, seafoam green eyes slowly opened. Sakura and the others watched in amazement as he slowly sat up, looking around with confusion and wonder. The wind had died down, and the air was still and calm, as if nature knew that something momentous had just occurred.

Naruto rushed to Gaara's side, and Temari was hugging her brother, tears streaming down their faces. Sakura felt a lump form in her throat as she watched the scene unfold.
