i noticed in a previous ask you mentioned theories you had about winwin's absence? can you elaborate? i'm quite curious

absolutely! but chat isn't gonna like this one i'm afraid.

i just want to start off by clarifying that this is all a theory, and no way is it true at all. i'm just speculating, and honestly if you disagree and have points why, please tell me because i really want this to be wrong.

unfortunately, it seems like a likely scenario that i absolutely hate (get me off of this ride pls), especially being a winwin stan.

so let's start at the begining.

we all know the basics, winwin is an extremely talented dancer. (he's also smart as hell) he was admitted to Beijing's dance academy in middle school which is an incredibly difficult school to get into, and he was also admitted to the central academy of drama which is another incredibly difficult school to get into (he ranked 10th overall and they only admitted the top 25)

so winwin is a talented dancer, now what?

most of us probably know that winwin was scouted by sm on the street for his looks, and they chased him for 2 years until he finally decided to join the company.

this is where the lines get blurred and a lot of things happen behind the scenes.

i'm convinced, that if sm kept telling winwin he would be a talented "idol" in korea winwin still would have said no. there is something that sm probably promised winwin if he agreed to join the company. (i'll get into that something later because it's pretty important to his career rn)

winwin trained for 1 year, after joining the company in 2015 and he was even a part of sm rookies. when nct u debuted, it was already confirmed that tae*l, taeyong, mark, jaehyun were going to be part of 127. pretty sure they wanted to debut with 7 members, so they had to pick three more members and they chose yuta, winwin, and haechan. now here's a big bombshell that probably isn't that surprising.

winwin was never supposed to be a permanent member of 127.

i've always seen the argument of "why didn't sm debut johnny or doyoung from the start? maybe instead of winwin?" good question. but the question should be asking instead of 'yuta' or 'haechan' for the matter, not winwin.

winwin was always being pushed in nct content, some even theorize he's like a main character in their lore (idk shit about the lore) which i found honestly odd. because if you're going to completely neglect a member but towards the begining, put so much effort into debuting and pushing him into the spotlight, why would you even do that in the first place?

the reason? sm didn't want winwin to leave the company.

winwin's visuals are an asset, sm doesn't want to lose that. combined with the fact that they spent so much effort trying to get him to join the company, it's no surprise that winwin (who had no interest in becoming an idol) might leave before wayv can debut in 2018.

so they push him to debut early, knowing that he wouldn't be able to back out then. technically rookies/trainees could still leave the company, but once you were locked in as a debuted idol you're locked in for real. so unfortunately, this was what happened to winwin. then the whole wayv, "inactive" in 127 thing happened and here we are. (don't know why he's still labeled as inactive, sm is probably avoiding the wrath of ot9 fans who still believe winwin is a part of 127 - aka me. i'm fans.)

so that happened, alright, what's next, why is sm treating winwin like shit?

they're not.

or at least, they're upholding an end of a deal. (i think, guys this is also speculative pls dont trust my word on this)

remember how i mentioned sm promising something to winwin so he could join the company? that promise was connections. see winwin probably had aspirations to be a dancer, but that doesn't make as much money as an actor does. he has the looks, and dance can sometimes be a form of drama/acting, so it's a decent transition. that's probably what his plans were from out of college. but sm convinced him that if he joined the company, they could use their own connections to get him acting gigs in china once he debuted in a group. this was the deal.

i mean most kpop idols usually segway into either becoming a solo artist or acting.

and mostly, sm seems to be upholding the end of the bargain. it's not sm's fault that he has become actor-winwin but sm isn't innocent either. the switching of recording dates was absolutely shitty on their part and i have no idea why they're doing it.

now if this were all true and all the winwin antis were to come for my head saying "winwin just wants to ruin the group with his acting gigs then" or some bullshit like that, then go voice your complaints to sm entertainment who harassed a fucking minor to join their company. a company that he didn't really want to join.

THIS POST IN NO WAY IS SAYING WINWIN HATES BEING A PERFORMER. IN FACT IM FULLY CONVINCED WINWIN LOVES PERFORMING WITH WAYV. IM JUST EXPLAINING A POSSIBILITY AS WHY “SM HAS BEEN MISTREATING WINWIN”

I promised I'll be making intros to my DRs, so let's start off with my Main DR ! I have not shifted to this DR yet, but it's the one I try to shift to almost every night and it's one of the two DRs that stay consistent in my scripts !

Going to public school, but not being able to make many friends. Getting bullied often, so taking up a hobby, which is dancing. I begin dancing every night to popular K-Pop songs in my room, and deciding that becoming an idol is my dream.

OCT.2009

I begin auditioning for SM, YG, JYP, but am continuously rejected for being too young, not being able to sing and rap. I go to every audition I can, which my family soon finds out about. I get scolded a lot afterwards, but I decide to prove everyone wrong, so I begin training in my room to sing and rap.

DEC.2009

I decide to audition for SM Ent. one last time. The judges already know me by then. They give me one last chance, and after a lot of mumbling from their side, they tell me they will call me soon.

JAN.2010

I begin training under SM Ent. There aren't many trainees my age, so I befriend older trainees, which are Sehun (EXO), Johnny (NCT), Irene (Red Velvet). Soon after I begin training, my family informs me that they will be moving back to Bulgaria, where my older brother can receive better higher education there, so I am left alone in Seoul. They tell me to come with them, but becoming an Idol is my dream, so I refuse, to which they get furious, and tell me never to contact them ever again.

2011-2012

I become great friends with Yeri (Red Velvet) and we train together, aligned for the same group. We are roommates, so we become good friends the moment she becomes a trainee. I've gone no contact with my family, aside from my aunt, uncle and cousin. I also befriend Mark (NCT), but we get close due to me not being able to speak good Korean and communicating in English instead (same situation with Johnny). He helps me improve both my English, and my Korean.

The rest of the years leading up to my debut are honestly kind of boring but some key moments are :

i went to a performing arts high school for dance so i will be biased toward members who dance like they’re telling a story. even if they’re not the “main” dancer, if they’ve got that ✨presence✨ and control, i’m weak. this is why Shotaro had me in a chokehold in NCTU (he still does tbh) and why people like Haechan & Renjun are my dream biases with Jisung constantly trying to steal the crown. choreo skill + chaos gremlin energy = my kryptonite.

I'm going to be very vague about my job but I do work in the fashion industry and like 10 out of 10 would/ would not recommend if you're an artistic person. I need to convince you to start stanning XLOV because they didn't manage to show their talents full force with the debut single. And talented people who are doing their job properly need support in this industry of often artificially created fame.

First of all, the topic I wanted to touch on for some time. Blind overpraising of idols among k-pop fans and the rabid defence of one's bias.

I'm of an opinion that it is perfectly OK to like a celebrity with weak vocals, bad rapping skills, and clumsy dancing. There are a lot of ways an artist or an idol can make someone's day brighter. Even if just as a topic of conversation, a bridge to connect with other people and find new friends, and nothing more. Or as someone to relate to (life struggles, sense of humour, representation, etc). Likewise, an artist's weak sides can be compensated by his/her strong sides (weak vocal skills vs stage presence, good taste in music, or songwriting skills (Robbie Williams and Sophie-Ellis Bextor are not strong vocalists, but are good pop-stars nonetheless)). However, I also strongly believe that it should be done with a grip on the reality and clear understanding of the bias' strong and weak points. This way it's possible to avoid toxicity towards other fans and self-sabotaging by being overly emotional and defensive to the comments of others pointing out the bias' shortcomings. Like a dozen? Accept it and own it. Find mutuals, and have your happy little world of escape.

That being said, of course I'm also in the camp wanting for talented professionals to do the job and not the lucky Iwannabefamous. And my regard for 127 neos won't stop me from cringing at The momentum's version of "No longer".

One of the irritating aspects of this overpraising of idols is the way it highlights the shallowness of some fans and their overall primitiveness. You are just reminded on a daily basis how many not that intellegent people there are. As an illustration, the way fans take an idol's Great Achievement/Skill and run with it everywhere and brandish it out at every opportunity like it's a diamond certificate, while the said skill is of mediocre level, and there are hundreds of non-idol artists out there who are ways above in this skill and are easily reachable with a click on YT. The way WinWin's fans overpraised him for his Chinese dancing having zero interest in the artform itself, and overlooking how WW couldn't adjust to k-pop dances, and often messed up his steps in 127 choreos. Not only his prior education didn't make him a great ambassador of the Chinese dance (the ability to jump backwards is not enough), it didn't make him into a great k-pop dancer either.

This long ranting (I felt like my posts this year are too short, you missed me rambling, I know, so I didn't hold myself) was a preface to introduction of Rui.

Rui also has studied Chinese traditional dance, modern and ballet. The difference - it shows that he won many dance competitions, and he is able to do k-pop mixed dances as well. In his case his special skills are relevant, and the praise he is getting for them is not overpraising.

In Xlov 3 members can dance, 1 keeps up OK, and among them Rui is the one to stand out in all of k-pop, he is to be pointed out for those who wants to know dancing well idols to follow. Sample one, sample two (on the right), and sample three (the taller one).

There are two members who can sing pretty well, the other two can hold a note as well, so are not awful live during their parts. Wumuti is maybe on Haechan's level? I'm not qualified to judge here. However, the main vocal of the group is definitely Hyun. And considering he practices vocal warm ups daily at the dorm, he is serious about singing, and will only improve with time. Wumuti is a decent level idol, but the interesting part about him is that he is the producer of the group and its concept. He picked the members, came-up with the odd-eye concept and the individual colours for the members, developed the genderless concept, etc. So it will be interesting to see how he will manage in the future. Will a self-produced group become successful, will be there a male version of g-idle. In addition, for those who like Doyoung for being a mom, Wumuti is worse. He already said he gave birth to the group and crowned Haru as his son (7 years difference). So for those who wants cuddles and a cozy family: Sample. Sample (Wumuti on the right both times).

Haru is the maknae, and it is his main selling point, I guess. He is very eager to do what is asked and brings in the energy. Sample one (the 1000%, on the very left). Sample two ("Tokyo Flash" cover, live vocals)

As a group from a very small company (they are the first group debuted) they don't have an opportunity to go on variety shows yet. Grass roots. However, fans post fancams from fansigns, so there is some funny content. As entertainers the four look promising. The desire to interact with fans and do fanservice is there. Their stylist is a very rare case of great taste and creativity, so that person is like the 5th talented person to follow, heh.

The group consists of a Korean, a Japanese, an Uyghur Chinese and a Taiwanese. All speak English to some degree. Haru is still learning Korean, so he is in his awkward phase. Wumuti speaks four languages. Their first IG live shows the kind of vibe they have.

SUZAKI Y/N - '00 liner, Suzaki Y/N [Stage Name: Y/N] is the leader of DYN♡STY. She's been training since the age of 11, when she left Japan. Y/N is the face of the group, lead dancer, and the lead vocalist. Y/N is 1/3 of the Foreign Line, being blasian. Y/N has gone viral for her language and dance skills. Y/N is known as the "Bear Member" for her cuddly personality, but fierce leadership skills. She is closest with member Chaeryeong as the Lee family hosted Y/N when she moved from Japan. LEE CHAERYEONG - '01 liner, Lee Chaeryeong [Stage Name: Chaeryeong] is the main dancer and lead rapper of DYN♡STY. She was scouted at a dance competition, where she placed 2nd Overall. She's gone viral many times for her stellar dance skills and friendship with member Y/N and other idols Keeho [P1Harmony] and Haechan [Soloist]. Chaeryeong is known as the "Cat Member," though she believes she represents a fox more. She is closest with leader Y/N due to their friendship stemming from childhood. If she's not with Y/N, she's with the maknae line.

HUH YUNJIN - '01 liner, Huh Yunjin [Stage Name: Yunjin] is the main rapper and main vocalist of DYN♡STY. She moved from America to train and was chosen for the group because of her amazing vocals, songwriting, and stage presence. She has gone viral for her humor and singing songs she's written for herself and the group! She is 2/3 of the Foreign Line. Yunjin is known as the "Snake Member." She is the closest with member NingNing, and the duo is constantly going viral for their "cute" relationship. They both can also be seen with member Chaeryeong often.

NING YIZHUO - '02 liner, Ning Yizhuo [Stage Name: NingNing] is the maknae of DYN♡STY. She trained for the shortest time, being added to the group a year before their debut. She is the group's second main vocalist and center. NingNing is also the second visual of the group, along with the oldest member Gahyeon. She's gone viral for her interactions with fans on solo lives, and jaw-dropping vocals. She is 3/3 of the Foreign Line. NingNing is known as the "Butterfly Member." She is the closest with members Yunjin and Chaeryeong, who took to her quickly when she joined the group.

this was the WORST era for rory

actually second worst right after we go up but we'll get into that later

she absolutely hated it for one reason:

jaemin wasn't there

she was absolutely heartbroken when they told the group he had to go on hiatus for his herniated disc

they obviously didnt show it on camera but her and jaemin were very close

he would always cheer her up

she was just not feeling this era

she talked probably even less than chewing gum

at least in chewing gum, jaemin would encourage her to speak up

the other members tried too, but it was always him who made her feel best

she’d catch herself playing with the boys and being happy and then she remembers and gets sad

she feels bad that shes enjoying herself when jaemin cant be there

she’s down for most of this era :( jaemin had to end up talking to her to reassure her (and himself) that he would come back and they’d be eight again

okay anyways .. besides the hurt and empty feeling she felt all this time

she grew an inch so she was happy abt that

her hair was still dirty blonde, not much change but she had forehead bangs this time

umm 2 fansites opened up for her this era! 'B' and 'SUGAR CREAM' !!

once again, red velvet and nct dream's promotions clashed again!!

when rookie won, joy gave a huge kiss on rory's cheeks and rory blushing was all over twitter

this was especially bad because they had to get on the floor multiple times during the choreo

thank god for her safety shorts

actually most of the time though, luckily, she was in the back of the choreo

even though she was literally .. one of the main dancers but anyway still grateful since she mostly wore skirts during this era

also she probably had the most almost wardrobe accidents this era

so many times there was a lot of wind and her skirt would almost blow up but either she'd notice or the other members would and would quickly cover her

that happens almost every era though but like it was bad because all they wore were their fucking uniforms to perform mfal

for ppl who wanted to put her in the back to make her one of the guys and not stand out,, u werent helping with making her wear a skirt

or yknow. the only girl in a group full of boys

so she still got major hate this era. it didn’t help that her character on the mfal mv was clingy

nothing new with that

intl fans and korean fans alike were angry at the fact that she had to wear a skirt while being on the floor

but sm never changed the choreo so :/

(dw it gets better now she never wears skirts or dresses whenever they have to get on the floor for choreos)

in chewing gum era, she stuck the most to mark and jaemin

however this time, she was closest to mark and jisung

one fav moment from this era is when misun said she thought renjun's snaggletooth was cute and for him to never get it fixed to which he promptly began blushing

yeah she lowkey got cocky after that LMAO

oh during the mv

at the start she was walking with jeno and when he turned to look at the teacher, she was still talking and when she noticed he wasnt paying attention she hit him in the arm

the whole mv is just her being annoyed by the boys not paying attention to her and focusing on the teacher more

during her part w/ mark she follows and tugs on mark's arm for his attention but he doesnt give it to her

when they run for the teacher's mug and almost drop it, she's the one who quickly grabs it from smashing on the floor

the camera pans to her with a disgusted look on her face

either from how the boys were acting or the fact that the teacher left her lipstick mark on it

oh during the car thing .. she's literally just shaking her head in disappointment but helps them anyway

when they get outside and she sees the boys' disappointment to the teacher having a child and husband .. she's literally just sitting there laughing

and then the boys make fun of her

Part 3 - NCT 127 - More MVs and Social Media Links

Oh hey I'm finally back. It's been more than a day but life happens and it's only been like two days... or so? (it's been three) but let's get back into this!

So last time we covered a little bit about the members of the group and then I linked some MVs. I realised something I could have done there was link some social media accounts so let's do that!

There are general accounts for NCT on most of the big social media services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. There are also accounts for all of the subgroups, so NCT 127 does have their own accounts on all of those as well. I feel like the Youtube content deserves its own post so I'll get to that but 127 does have a Youtube channel as well.

The individual members share things like the Twitter and Instagram accounts on and off, taking turns sometimes to post on there, tho most posts are from the company. Facebook gets posts from the company and not from individuals very often. The boys do all have their own Instagram accounts tho, and they also all use Bubble to varying degrees, which is an app which a lot of kpop groups use where fans can pay to access special posts from idols that include text posts, pictures, voice recordings, etc. I have never been a Bubble user, but I follow everyone on Instagram so here's all of those:

You can use those to become more familiar with the members and see some of the nonsense they get up to. Some of them post often and some post almost never so your mileage may vary with them as a tool, but I'm a sucker for personal social media accounts so I'm clearly following those all.

It's also worth throwing out there since I skipped talking about positions last time that Taeyong is the leader of both NCT 127 and also of NCT in general. He's also a main rapper, main dancer, visual, center, helps write and produce music and has since The 7th Sense was released, etc etc, you name it, he's probably done the thing. He's ridiculously talented, basically. (They all are.) I could list everyone's positions but there's tons of wiki pages and etc with those kinds of lists and I find them to be less helpful when you have a group like NCT where everyone kinda does everything a lot of the time and has multiple talents and jobs since the rappers might be singing or the vocalists might be rapping depending on the song and literally everyone is a visual etc. But that's part of why you might be noticing that Taeyong is front and center like... a lot. Very often. He's recognisable and has a distinctive voice and being the leader is a good extra excuse to focus on him.

Anyway, let's get back to the music! I somehow managed to come up with ten more videos to link to hit the max per post so you're getting another full variety tasting of 127's style and range with a special treat at the end.

Favorite (Oct 25, 2021) was the lead single from the repackage of Sticker and was not quite as divisive as Sticker but still a bit weird. Released right before Halloween, there's a whole vampire concept going on (GREAT) and the MV and live stage performances all have a weird electronic dance break 2 1/2 minutes in (BAD) that I am PLEASED TO TELL YOU is not part of the song on the actual album. The first time I watched the MV it threw me for such a hard loop that I almost hated disliked the song but when I listened to the album later on spotify I was like "wait it's gone!!!! it was all just a bad dream!!!" and I try to forget it until I do something like watch the MV to make a post like this.

We're gonna mix in some of 127's Japanese releases today starting with their first one, Chain (May 8, 2018) off their first Japanese mini album. Despite NCT's initial plan to have groups based in different countries and markets, they are still now in early 2024 only ABOUT to have their first Japan-centric subunit debut, which means that they've just been having 127 (and Dream) release some stuff in Japanese in the meantime. It helps that they have a Japanese member. Anyway Chain is just a great song so here it is.

gimme gimme (Feb 15, 2021) suffers a little from the eternal problem of kpop songs even in primarily Japanese having some.... wild? English lyrics (spicy disease? dead clowns? who wrote these lyrics? why did their native English speakers go along with this?) but despite the nonsense it's a catchy, mesmerizing earworm of a song with a tight MV with a lot of neat cuts and transitions and I have watched it VERY MANY times. I love it. Spicy disease and all.

In the first main NCT intro post I included WayV's version of Regular (October 8, 2018) and linked both this and the Korean version. I was going to include the Korean version and just link the English here since the Korean one is the one that I personally listen to the most, but then I noticed that the English version has like 66 million more views so I decided to reverse that and you get the English one. Anyway. All versions of Regular are great and the English version has some great weird lyrics too ("I be walking with the cheese that's the queso" is like... ultimate. Incredible. A+. How did Jaehyun record that without laughing? Legendary.). It's also, with Simon Says, one of the only MVs that has all ten members of NCT 127. It also has a CGI tiger, shiny cars, rockets going off, Winwin jumping off a building, there's just a lot going on.

Sliding back to Japan for a minute, I feel like I should include Wakey Wakey (March 18, 2019). I almost forget this song exists sometimes and I think it's because I just want to block out having seen the absolutely terrible wig they put on Johnny for this MV. Seriously why? The song itself is solidly in the weird but also very catchy lane that 127 does so well but I just keep thinking about the wig. Johnny had some long extensions for NCT 2020 that looked great on him, but this wig was just not it. My eyes are drawn to it every time he's on screen. I need to put this into my regular listening-only playlists and let my brain block that wig out the way I forget the dance break in Favorite exists.

127 started 2023 off with Ay-Yo (Jan 30, 2023) which was the (somewhat delayed) repackage of 2 Baddies, which we'll get to in a moment. I wasn't sure what to think of Ay-Yo at first but it has definitely grown on me despite having veered back into some questionable hair territory mainly for Taeyong (and I say that as a grown up late 90s punk kid who thought giant hair spikes were cool). The MV has some absolutely wild visuals mixed in, and the song is definitely outside of the realm of standard kpop releases even if it's not as weird as some others like Sticker. It's solid.

Okay so. Like. I honestly didn't really pay enough attention to the general reactions to 2 Baddies (Sep 15, 2022) to tell you how divisive this song was to most people, but it split one of my group chats VERY strongly and one of my friends has refused to listen to any 127 releases since then because she hates this song so much. I tried to get her with Fact Check at the very least and she's so anti this song that she still refused and I may have lost her on 127 altogether 🤣 It's mainly the chorus that she dislikes, and I'm a little back and forth on it myself sometimes honestly but also I have absolutely BLASTED this song while driving down the highway so it feels kinda like a guilty pleasure song sometimes. If you ignore the chorus the other parts of the song are so goooooooood and no one can deny that the last part of the bridge slaps. Plus there's a whole lot of shirtless Johnny and Yuta which you can never go wrong with.

Touch (Mar 13, 2018) is a little off from the style of kpop that I listen to regularly since it's a bit more in the bubbly poppy side of things that I don't always go for but the vibes are immaculate and everyone looks so happy in the MV and there's fuzzy sweaters and everyone smiles so much? It's hard to not love it. It's fluff and cheery and delightful.

I don't know if SM actually started the "track video" trend (short MVs that have an edited, cut down version of a song so they cost less to produce than a full MV- Lemonade is 3:10 on the Sticker/Favorite album, but this track video is 2:01 for instance) but they love doing them with NCT, and despite Lemonade (Sep 9, 2021) definitely deserving a full MV, since it wasn't the lead single it didn't get one but it did at least get a track video and was performed a lot on the music shows when they were promoting Sticker. It's catchy and has some clever work in the full version lyrics that involve titles of other NCT 127 songs and I've listened to it as much as or possibly more than Sticker.

I've covered all of the lead singles and there ARE some other track videos or special release songs like the recent Be There For Me that I could be using the last slot for but you know what? We're gonna go fully off the expected path and include Let's Shut Up & Dance (Feb 21, 2019) instead because it's wild and fun. 127 doesn't do much besides sing part of the chorus and do a bunch of dancing in this (on the ceiling? on the walls? in an alley?) but like. Lay is here too and the song is SO fun and an absolute bop so that's what we're closing this post out with.

So that wraps the NCT 127 music videos! I'm thinking the next post and the last of the 127 centric ones will be a guide to some of their Youtube content, since there's a whole lot, and that'll kinda set up expectations for the posts about Dream and WayV as well when we get to them. I think after I get through the main posts of MVs and content for all of the sub-units that I might do some special posts of performance videos for songs that don't have MVs just to get some of those out there, or I might just post a bunch of links to them. We'll see how I'm feeling and if my audience of like two or three people has any kind of preference (that's you, hey, yeah you, lemme know what you want from me).
