I bought the Mahou no Mako-chan doll from Marmit's Memorial Super Heroines line. They released a number of characters such as Rei from Evangelion and Megu and Non from Majokko Megu-chan sometime in the late 90's.
I was on the fence over this doll for awhile. The Megu-chan dolls were made with more love IMO. They have prettier eyes and actually come with their magical pendants. Mako didn't come with any sort of accessories except for a stand, which is way too short for her. I also feel like they could've done a better job with her eyes and face.
However! I do really like this doll. She has painted on "sideburns" that I didn't like at first but now I think they look fine. Her outfit is extremely accurate, right down to the buttons on her shirt.
I'm in the process of fixing her up too. She has some glue residue in her hair and I'm trying to find a way to style her hair closer to the anime. I'm also going to look into replacing her socks (they're horribly stained) and finding her a star-shaped pendant. I'll try to post some updates.

There is a connection between the Showa era magical girl genre in Japan and Disney's 1989 The Little Mermaid from the US. The movie was adapted from the same 1837 fairy tale published by Hans Christian Andersen -- Den lille havfrue -- as the third entry in the Toei Majokko Series (東映魔女っ子シリーズ), Magical Mako-chan (魔法のマコちゃん), which debuted in 1970.
Thse are background images form the Disney film.

WORST MODERN ADAPTATION! ROUND 1B, MATCH 2 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Frog Princess is based off the Frog Prince; Mahou no Mako-Chan (1970 - 1971) is based off The Little Mermaid.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
The Frog Princess:
This episode was disappointing. Cool that it adapted a more obscure story, but when every other episode tries to be a retelling for a different culture and this one was just the modern American South, it feels a lot less inspired
Mahou no Mako-Chan (1970 - 1971):
it's got cute designs, beautiful animation, and a fun 70s aesthetic but by god is Mako annoying. Also kinda a shame that after the first episode was a fairly faithful adaptation of the fairy tale and the second episode sets itself up as a magical girl show the show kinda forgets to be both until the last episode. Eryn Cerise on YouTube has a really good retrospective of the show if anyone unfamiliar wants to see just how bonkers (affectionate) it can get

Question: If I was making a list of water-themed magical girls (which I am) should I include the entire Mermaid Melody cast because they're technically all water themed? or should this just be exclusive to magical girl groups where each girl has a different power.
I'm just picturing a big graphic and there's all these blue & green magical girls and in the center is just a rainbow line-up of mermaid girls

The cover art for the upcoming Mahou no Mako-chan blu-ray has been revealed! It's pretty cheesy and a little bit misleading but I like it. I'm still on the fence if I'm going to pre-order this or wait until it pops up secondhand for cheaper.

I finally got to watch more magical girl anime from the 60s and 70s and am now going to analyze them.
Some elements I'm looking out for in the "magical girl formula" are: 1. Animal Sidekick, 2. Transformation sequence, 3. main romance subplot, 4 saving the day, 5. Special Attacks, 6. Becomes someone older, 7. Becomes an Idol, 8. Magical powers.
Himitsu no Akko-chan - 1969
Tumblr media
All this time I thought, Creamy Mami and Minky Momo were first magical girls to use a compact to transform, but by the looks of it, it's Akko-chan that started it all. She has a magical mirror compact that gives her the power to transform into anyone, typically someone older. I was only able to see one episode but really enjoyed it. In the show Akko-chan has a pet cat so I'm gonna count that as the animal sidekick.
Mahou no Mako-chan - 1970
Tumblr media
Once again, only one episode was available but the story reminded me a lot of The Little Mermaid. Obviously this is before the Disney movie came out but there could be some influences from the original fairytale. There is a main romance subplot, Mako-chan falls in love with a human and decides to become human herself. While she is no longer a mermaid she has the magical ability to change outfits.
Majokko-Tickle - 1978
Tumblr media
This one was pretty good and very 70s. It centers around a girl named Tiko who is given a book as a gift. Inside the book is a witch named Tickle, who ends up escaping the book. Like Sally, and Majokko, Tiko can use magic with a wave of a hand.

Mahou no Mako-Chan (1970-1971)
Director: Yugo Serikawa, Produced by Toei Animation
Technique
Mahou is a fully animated television series, with full watercolor backgrounds and sound.
Representation
Maho no Mako-Chan is loosely based off the famous 1837 tale "The Little Mermaid" By Hans Christian Andersen.
The first episode is roughly about 18-20 minutes, with the basic plot synopsis being that Mako disobeys a strict law: Mermaids cannot look at anything above the water. When she breaks the law and spots a young boy, she falls in love and begins to yearn for him. Shortly after she tries to get the boy's attention, she is swept back into the ocean by her father, the dragon king. With her longing to see the boy on the cruise again, her mother encourages her to follow her feelings, but notes that she will face the consequences if she does so.
Mako surfaces above the water once more, seeking out the cruise ship with the boy she longs for, but once she spots it, a tsunami hits and the boy begins to drown. Upon the first touch of a human, she becomes less of a mermaid, but Mako sets her mind to becoming human in order to be with him.
The dragon king soon finds Mako after her encounter with the boy, intending to punish her, yet Mako sends herself to her grandmother, a wicked sea witch to be punished. Upon punishment, she begs to be turned into a human, with her grandmother finally relenting when she swims into magic that may kill her.
Mako finally begins to swim up to the shore again, being stopped one final time by her father, yet Mako never wavers, and finally reaches the shore. Once she does, she swallows the tear that will finally turn her into a human.
Reception
Once again, reception was hard to find, but based off some quick reviews, Maho No Mako-chan received some mixed reviews, landing a 6.9/10. While this is based of off the famous story of the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, the story is very loosely based off the story, with very few similar story beats.
