From the perspective of someone who really loves Mahito as a villain, I think I prefer the manga's layout. Because it is so much more EVIL.
Mahito looking Nanami in the eyes as he kills him is first of all such a psychopathic disregard for his opponent, like he has seen the life drain from the eyes of so many humans before, but he's watching gleefully as desperation consumes the face of a reocurring encounter, one he knows, one he has faced before.
And second of all such a power move. Such a "yep, I'm right in front of you. Try to land a hit. See how that works out for ya". He knows he can destroy Nanami in the blink of an eye, so why not give him the bitter taste of being so close and yet so far.
Meanwhile, the Anime feels so much more sympathetic from Mahito's part. He caresses Nanami's back like he's saying "there there. You can stop fighting now. I'm gonna kill you anyway. Just rest." Which, while I am a hoe for this soft touch, is so much less of a villanous thing. Almost like a mercy kill. It feels so weak.

Through my intense sobbing yesterday I didn’t actually notice they’d switched up the positioning for this scene and I’m intrigued by the significance of this. Because either way it’s horrible and painful to watch, but they both convey some unique intentions. With the manga, with Mahito facing Nanami, there’s a sense of false, mocking intimacy — a reminder that Mahito would’ve killed Nanami if Itadori (and Sukuna) hadn’t broken through his domain, a reminder that Mahito is superior and he doesn’t need to sneak around to beat Nanami. It’s also a callback to their connection, since Nanami is a big part of why Mahito has evolved into what he is now, and this is their third and final meeting.
The anime goes a different route, though, with Mahito catching Nanami off guard from the back. Still a sense of false intimacy given how close they are and the hand on his bare back, but not quite so mocking when the implication is Mahito deliberately waited until Nanami had exhausted the last of his strength and was therefore especially vulnerable. Mahito, at his core, isn’t courageous or righteous like the other disaster curses. He’s a lot more human than them, right? And this is him proving how cowardly he really is.
I hate this scene with every inch of my heart but narratively it’s interesting to have Mahito be Nanami’s downfall, especially when he came so close to death both other times he fought him. And the changes are at least fun to analyze.

ngl i feel like mahito is kind of,,, asexual? but not 100%.
like. i feel like sure he'd be fine with sex and all but it would. not be anything special to him? like he'd be equally as interested in that as like torture or transfiguration.
m not sure. something like he would like,, enjoy it and stuff but it would only be for a goal. and his usual goals are depravity and shit so like. it would be one way to get what he wants. but he wouldn't really seek out sex for the sake of sex itself or anything, it would be for one of his goals or a curiosity.
dunno how to put it into words but like. he wouldn't really care about it on it's own. it's just a way of getting what he wants, an interesting way sometimes, but nothing special. he can get what he wants in other ways too.
uhhhh tl:dr i feel like his sexuality is like. somewhere along the lines of he doesn't really care about sex but he's fine with it or seeking it out on his terms to further his wants. is that on the asexual spectrum? i don't know. kind of feels like it but i dunno. he's not 100% allo this i know for sure tho.
and then of course mahito is pan. he would not care abt gender at all. although i think he might not 100% understand it either. but uhhh we know he's fruity as hell that thing kisses boys and he'd probs kiss girls too if he felt like it so. anyone is on the table for him. he knows no gender barrier. this is not a good thing. your gender can't keep you safe from his sexuality.

Color symbolism,,, Mahito and Gojo r both blue. Mahito being blue too and how he takes gojo’s former homosexual place by ‘geto’s side and mimics him is matchy. Mahito is blue Sukuna is red. Itadori is as well by extension, henceforth natural enemies, red vs blue, like gojo’s technique blue and reversal as red.
sukuna is an enemy to both of them, gojo gets chopped. They’re both in a situation where they may be dead, and yet may come back— gojo being chopped in half, unlikely to be able to bring himself back or be brought back, and Mahito being curse eaten by Kenjaku.
I think if one comes back the other will as well. so gojo has decent chances given that curses eaten by Geto don’t 100% die. They should also mirror one another- and since Mahito would need ‘Geto’, the assistance of others, to come back, it’s likely gojo will need to be revived as well. 👍
we have Mahito Vs Itadori-Sukuna. curse Vs human, human curse Vs cursed human. calm, calculating, emotional, hotheaded. Mahito is itadori’s natural enemy, and an inversion of him, like blue and red are inversions of each other
