happy some-number-of-days-till-halloween!
This year's halloween costume party features Aule for the group costume theme (he is also invited).
feanor's fire effect is achieved through slightly-glowy tiny gems sewed onto a bodysuit with actual stone chunks attached. the mini-Lamps are glass lanterns containing one silmaril each and carried on a really long fishing line by the ambarussa. feanor made a mini-angainor (complete with sock monkey melkor) just for the costume.
celegorm's orome costume is a slightly upgraded version of his costume from last year's party (x)
mahtan and nerdanel (as mairon) are the only ones who didn't have to get a wig/fake beard.
curufin spent more time helping feanor with the mini-Lamps and mini-Angainor than working on his own costume. also celebrimbaby is a dwarf because why would you *not* go as aule and a dwarf when you have a small toddler.
#silm#silmarillion#seasonal#halloween#feanor#celegorm#mahtan#nerdanel#curufin#celebrimbor#feanor and celegorm are the Actual Valar Cosplay people lol#mahtan got patterned/painted gloves and leggings for the fire effect#but the top half is body paint bc he thought the texture would turn out better#nerdanel also went with paint for her fire hands. it rubbed off on everything; whoops#feanor made his hair red with a more exaggerated version of the gem-refraction trick maglor uses#since he does naturally have dark pink/purple tones in his Fancy Raven Hair#he grew out his hair specifically for this#curufin gave up on his own costume two months ago at 2am when celebrimbaby tried to eat one of the gloves#also celebrimbaby gets a giant dwarf style party hood complete with a tassel#mahtan spent several hours following aule around secretly trying to color match the paints#nerdanel enlisted curumo to help

Fëanorions and fam go to the ren faire:
Maedhros: basic tunic and cloak with a hood. Leather boots and belt, a giant bag with a first aid kit, snacks and water for everyone.
Maglor: cliché jester outfit in clashing colours with extra long shoes and obnoxious bells on his hat and the point of his shoes. Carries a ukulele and plays earworms the whole time
Celegorm: Spirit Halloween Robin Hood costume (yes Nelyo, the leggings have to be that tight), Huan is dressed like the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Disney cartoon
Caranthir: painstakingly reproduced by hand a historical outfit from a Byzantine mosaic, sourcing the most historically accurate fabrics he could find. Yes, these are real pearls and gems. No, he won’t say how much the whole thing is worth nor how long it took him to make.
Curufin: borrowed old stuff from Maedhros. He put all his time and efforts making Celebrimbor’s garb
Amrod: front part of a dragon puppet
Amras: back part of a dragon puppet
Celebrimbor: asked his dad if he could dress like a knight and Curufin made him real plate armour and a sword out of aluminium so it’s not too heavy and roped Caranthir into making a tiny gambeson to wear under the armour
Fëanor: black t-shirt and jeans, spends all his time critiquing other people’s outfits
Nerdanel: Merida cosplay, having the time of her life beating the shit out of buff guys at strength games

I don't care about a "reader x character" fics, I want educational "reader & character" fics!
(More educational than fluff)
I want a "Feanaro teaches you Quenya" fic. Including complaining about "th", the Valar, Fingolfin and stuff. But mostly it's a language course.
I want a "Finrod teaches you the geography of Beleriand" because I can't learn it in any other way.
If I had more dopamine, I would do a "Maglor teaches you basic music theory (and before that, the underlying maths)" or "(whatever fun character would fit here) teaches you classical geometry".
Also, I would love a "Miriel teaches you textile crafts" YT channel where someone does educational content in full cosplay and in-character. Including frequent mentions of her death and complaining on Finwe. But mostly it's textile arts. Also, fourth wall is optional and of course she's got a sewing machine or whatever.
And so on and so forth.
#melkor teaches you thermodynamics#silm crack#fic ideas#general ideas#wishful thinking#random#silm#generally how about we do more things in-character?

Ok so I’m rotating ideas about elves and mythology and decided to drop some ramblings in your ask box because of all the wonderful theatre-related thoughts you’ve been sharing!! The thing is that the silm is a mythology right. Like it’s written in that style, and the heroes of LoTR and the later Ages in general are always explicitly looking back to the stories of the First Age (see: Aragorn wanting to cosplay Beren and Lúthien with Arwen). But what were the myths, the cultural stories, of the Elves of the First Age? In Tirion what were the stories that Maglor might write a play retelling or subverting, that Elemmírë might make a new song about, that Míriel might have woven into a tapestry? All cultures have ancient myths – but these characters are a) living at the very dawn of the world, and b) are all going to become mythological figures themselves! It makes me a bit insane. My thoughts are that they told a lot of stories about the war the Valar made on Melkor, and also about Cuivienen and the awakening of the elves, but honestly I don’t KNOW. What do you think? (No pressure to answer this is very random I realise) ❤️❤️
NO I love these thoughts!!! My thoughts generally go along the same vein as yours in terms of the general themes of elven myths. Here are some possibilities I imagine:
Whichever continent the elves in question are not seeing is often the center of the stories. The Sindar and Avari in middle-earth myth-make a lot about the lands in the west; the Eldar in Valinor myth-make about middle-earth. Since we're talking about Elemmírë, Míriel, and Maglor I'll stick to the latter.
I imagine there's aways the pervasive idea of secret Ainur no one has discovered yet. No matter how many times the Valar go "no we promise we're all here in Valinor, there's no other Valar left" there's 100% an elf somewhere going "have you heard about the Vala of bogs? yeah they live in middle earth and they're in charge of all the bogs there and if you aren't careful you'll be stuck serving in their bog court"
Not to mention elves who know Aulë and have heard that his people sleep under the earth, waiting for their time to awake. I'm sure for some elves tell it as simply that, but over time another pervasive myth develops -- stories of great dwarven kingdoms under the earth, kingdoms they're barred from seeing, stories of seven great dwarven kings, each much like Aule in face, each possessing a specific sort of magic.
Imin, Tata, Enel, etc! Not only do we canonically get them as a counting story, I imagine their fates are also something that ends up being talked about? They do not seem like they ever ended up in Valinor -- what happened to them? I feel like elven stories can tend to go along the lines of "and then he turned into a tree" or "he still dwells by the sea where he was born" or "he fell into the cracks of the mountains during the war and became one with the earth."
Myth as a way to explore cultural taboos! Elves coming to Valinor, a land with no pain or crime, with the shadows of war and suffering behind them -- I imagine they must explore taboo and pain through storytelling. What happens to an elf that leaves his wife for another? What happens to an elf who poisons her sister? I imagine there's some gruesome/creepy stories that come out there, but are told with a naïveté to the actual truth of what violence looks like. Something along the lines of "and then the servants of Melkor hacked the elven king into bits, so his wife had to go looking for each piece of him in every corner of the world and sew them back together"
The sea!! Must I say more. The elves emerged from the sea, and they long for it -- yet they cannot go too far into the waves without drowning, and they do not know what lurks under the waves. I imagine myths centering around sea-creatures, around the souls of the drowned, around elves (mer-elves?) who never left the sea and make their kingdoms underneath the waters, etc.
Just some ideas!! If anyone else wants to contribute headcanons for early elf myths to his post, please do!
#lena speaks#theghostinthemargins#thank you for this ask this is something i think about a lot#one of my fave things to think about :)

Caranthir-Our life
Feanorianweek day4
@feanorianweek
The reflection of the face,
It's Thagelion.
Freeze the most vigorous vitality.
Can you notice the image of Thagelion on the face? This one is the most painful to paint... orz
My inspiration comes from a language-Cosplay game by my friends and I.We talk about Dragor Bragollach(The battle of Flashfire)on the map.The most front line are Himring and Maglor's Gap.And the second is Himlad. The Thagelion is the rear area of the whole March of Maedhros.
When I think about the grayscale about the picture,I remember the Theme of this set of drawings is "Life and Soul".The Thagelion is the source of life of the whole March of Meadhros and populace,Isn't it?So I choose the light of jewelry to reflect the shadow of the city Thagelion.

I am in a desperate need for someone willing to do a Glorestor cosplay with me. I would cosplay both of them but my damned hair is too dark and thick to properly put a wig over.
Sadly, none of the Tolkien-reading people around me are of the cosplaying type (or of the accepting-of-gay-ships type) and therefore I must cosplay on my own.
I am considering a dark haired series of characters that are usually thought of in pairs with someone I can't cosplay (Erestor, Fingon, Arwen, Morgoth, Luthien) and then doing a Maglor for the giggles because Lonely.
#though perhaps I would be able to find someone who would cosplay beren or aragorn for me? as i mentioned - heteronormativity and homophobia#do play a part#tolkien#silmarillion#erestor#glorfindel#glorestor#luthien#arwen#fingon#morgoth#im just throwing names here

(belated) Halloween costume party!
since orome is obviously the family vala (with aule coming in second) the group costume theme that year was orome. (they do a different vala each year)
yes celegorm does in fact have a horse, yes his horse does actually look somewhat like nahar, and yes he put a rubber horse mask on huan instead.
instead of doing orome + a friend, ambarussa are doing Tall Orome (they did rock paper scissors for who gets to be the head).
aredhel and galadriel show up as orome & vana, but halfway through the party galadriel pops into the bathroom and converts her costume to tulkas:
Bonus: Maglor forgot what the theme was and showed up dressed as a crab
#silm#silmarillion#celegorm#ambarussa#amrod#amras#aredhel#galadriel#celegorm and his valarcon-award-winning orome cosplay and ambarussas Tall Orome costume were assembled right next to each other#celegorm borrowed the outfit from tilion because Real Orome is like fifteen feet tall and none of his clothes would actually fit#the antlers are a headband he made from hollowed out deer antlers#the arrows are even fletched with the same feathers as orome's#huan just gets a rubber horse mask and fake hooves because finding dog costumes for a dog that big is very hard#ambarussa mostly patched their costume together from stuff they found in various brothers closets#the cape is celegorms#the waistcoat is maglors (obviously)#the skirt is maedhros' because his was the only one tall enough for Tall Orome#the pants were made from maedhros' pants and some extra fabric#and the wig is a bunch of brown and purple yarn glued together#meanwhile aredhel convinced nessa to help her steal some of oromes clothes#fingon helped with the alteration (because aredhel is. not good at sewing anything other than repairing a rough seam)#the rest of it (shirt; pants; boots) was looted from fingolfins wardrobe
