Rethinking "masculine" and "feminine" in Western magic
We all see it all the time. This plant has masculine energy. This crystal enhances feminine power. This ritual balances masculine and feminine forces. But what does any of that really mean?
After all, a plant does not have a gender. A crystal does not have a gender. Elements, planets, and celestial bodies do not have genders. So why is everything broken down into gendered categories in modern occult spaces?
The short answer: "Masculine" and "feminine" are shorthand terms that were developed by medieval alchemists, but modern occultists have lost that original context, leading to one-dimensional and reductive use of these terms.
The long answer: This model comes to us from Hermeticism by way of medieval alchemists. In the Hermetic model, the universe (or Prima Materia or Source or whatever) is a single whole divided into polarities -- sets of equal but opposite forces.
Here's a quote from the book Real Alchemy by Robert Allen Bartlett that I think explains this well:
"One of the earliest observations of Nature was that everything has its opposite -- day/night, male/female, hot/cold, wet/dry. The One divides into active and passive modes, with the active energy constituting the energies of life, and the passive one of the energy of matter.”
This idea was ridiculously widespread in the Middle Ages. To give just one example, Western traditional medicine (i.e., before modern medicine) was based on balancing the four humours by balancing opposite forces. So if you have inflammation, which is a hot and wet condition, you would treat it with herbal remedies that are cold and dry.
Early Hermeticists and alchemists classified different natural forces as either active or passive. Heat is active, cold is passive. Light is active, dark is passive. Fire (the force of transformation in alchemy) is active, while water (the universal solvent in alchemy) is passive. You get the idea.
Because of gender stereotypes in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, activeness eventually became associated with masculinity, and passiveness eventually became associated with femininity. You can still see this in old medical texts: Male bodies are hot and wet, but female bodies are cold and dry, so the medieval doctor should choose his treatment accordingly.
This has more to do with medieval European issues around gender than with nature or magic. My point here is that the gender stuff isn't literal: the Hermeticists did not literally believe that the planet Venus is female or that iron is male. Gendered terms were used as a shorthand to name opposites.
And even within medieval alchemical sources, gender is a spectrum! Let's take the elements as an example:
According to Bartlett, fire is the most active (“masculine”) element, while air is active but less active than fire. Water and earth are both considered passive (“feminine”) elements, but water is less passive/feminine than earth.
So, to recap: Hermetics believe in a perfect whole divided into polar opposites. Alchemists, doctors, and ceremonial magicians love this idea and run with it. Masculine/feminine is just one of many ways to describe these opposite forces. You could just as easily use active/passive to mean the same thing. And even in medieval times, each of these pairs of opposites was understood as a spectrum, with most energies falling somewhere between the two extremes.
The problem is that we've been playing a centuries-long game of telephone. Victorian occultists who were referencing Renaissance grimoires and still working in a vaguely Hermetic framework write in their books that, for example, roses have feminine qualities. A Wiccan author writing in the 1980s comes across this during their research and includes it in their book, but now it's one step further removed from that context. Several other authors repeat the claim that rose is feminine, all citing that one book from the '80s. Flash forward to 2025, and this claim is so removed from the original context that some witches genuinely believe rose is A Girl Flower because of some intangible Girlness inherent to the plant.
What does this mean for modern witches? Honestly, I think that kind of depends on the witch.
If you find working with masculine/feminine classifications helpful, I don't necessarily think you need to throw out that model. Just make sure you understand the background of these terms and remember that masculine/feminine in a magical sense is not the same as masculine/feminine in a gender sense. Maybe read up on Hermeticism, alchemy, and the other medieval and Renaissance occult systems that originated this model. Also, think about how using gendered terms in your practice is connected to your relationship with gender. How are you making space for nonbinary and agender energies and identities?
If you want to work with pairs of opposites but get weirded out by all the gender stuff, why not use a different polarity like active/passive or hot/cold to classify things instead? (This is how I classify herbs in my Southern Folk Magic practice.)
And if you don't particularly care about working with opposites in your practice, feel free to ignore this whole thing. There's no rule saying you have to label things this way.

Magic for the college witch
In honor of finding out I am set to graduate in December with my associates in science I have decided to celebrate with you all by sharing my tips and tricks I used to help pass some of my classes! Each tip will be sorted into circumstances as to where they may be applicable. Please enjoy, and congrats to all my future grads!
Reminder: In dorms and such you wont have access to many tools, but if your living in an apartment things are less strict. every time you see candles and such if you live in a dorm replace it with either electric candles or even colored stones you can rub together or place in a grid!
Registering for classes
Often times we try to register for classes as soon as possible, especially when you are an incoming freshman. When it comes to getting accepted and starting the process congrats your here.
Set up registering appointments on lucky number days, during the new moon, or on Mondays and Thursdays because those times represent readiness and preparation
Manifest getting good classes and teachers by sending off a prayer out to the universe
Do divination when registering opens to see if a teacher is a good fit or not (Also check out rate my professor)
If you are having trouble establishing classes, or just cant seem to get that *one* class you need, light a blue candle and put mint at the base of it to promote an opening
If your facing a situation where you are trying to get into an exclusive class (this also works if your presenting a thesis) put a sugar packet under your tongue to sweeten your words and make you more convincing
Getting to class on time
The commute anywhere can be a really hard thing to do, whether your commuting from a dorm to a classroom or city to campus it can be hard to be on time or find the motivation to show up to class
To motivate yourself to go to class keep a carnelian under your pillow to help you rise in the morning
Keep a consistent schedule, not only is this helpful psychologically but magically consistency helps build up magical energy towards motivation
enchant your walking shoes (or get heelies) to put pep in your step and always be on time when walking. You can optionally put a sigil in your shoe
enchant cars to avoid red lights by charging your keys in full moon light
Light a green candle before important days to make sure your morning commute runs smoothly
Setting up magical space in the dorms
Most dorms don't allow things like candles or flames, heaters, strip lights, etc. With this in mind people assume it must be hard to create a magical space without some of the key items, but we do have solutions!
Instead of regular candles, use electric ones as votives on deity altars
Instead of incense use MILD essential oil diffusers like lava stones in the corners, or a defuser. Bonus points if you use a dehumidifier
Chances are you wont have a lot of space, so opt for small placements on desks via mini figures and small stones
Set up sachets around your space and put them in clothing areas, not only do they smell good and keep moths away, they act as magical protection
Start working on energy based practices like meditation or enchantments with only your body
Navigating relationships
College can be a hard time, your adjusting to life without the friends you grew up with, most people start their dating life, and friends begin to come and go as you go through classes. Don't restrict what you experience
When you brush your teeth, enchant it to represent you 'speaking your truth' and 'biting back' so your protected from people who have bad intentions or are deceptive
When at parties and such put a sigil of protection on your left thigh, this represents protection from people looking to harm you
blow cinnamon at your door, or use a light cinnamon essential oil wash to invite new people and opportunities
Keep amber under your pillow or by photos to maintain friendships and help you let go of ones that no longer serve you
wear silver to repel energy vampires or people who are looking to use you
Studying success
Studying and how effective it is will depend on you and how you like to study, there are hundreds of posts online that look at how to find your study style, this more focuses on magic you can do for memory retention
Chew mint gum during studying AND during your test for memory recall
Draw sigils on your physical flash cards to make the information easier to retain
On the third of each month save that day to brush up on all information from the class, not only does this prep you for the final but this day is Athenas ritual day
Study the most on Wednesdays as they represent wisdom
Use a shungite worry stone during studying and testing to help keep your mind focused and stress free before tests
Test taking
Test taking can be a really hard part of college, I know it was for me. We do a lot of things to help prepare but what can we do during a test?
Create a sigil of good luck on top of your exam
Wear green on exam days
Eat and drink something enchanted (I swear by a snickers and a red bull) before a test for good luck
Create a superstition like a lucky shirt or pair of socks after your first good exam grade
Wear gold accessories to enhance your test taking skills, and speed up your test (Great when you are being timed)
Mental Health
Your mental health in college is very important, it can be hard being separated from your home town or family and just know that it does get better. College is a mix of emotions, from the loneliest point in your life, to the most social. You will be navigating new challenges, new feats, and its important to take care of yourself. Seek out the college mental health resources available to you like counseling as needed. you matter!
Use words of affirmations when you wake up and before you sleep to remind yourself you matter, my favorite is from the help "You is smart, you is kind, you is important"
Carry rose quartz and carnelian on you for self love and energy
Before bed drink lavander tea for rest and revitalization
Pray over your food to nourish your spirit as you go through college
Write down letters and petition to the universe for stability and how you feel.
I hope you all have enjoyed! Again, congrats to all my future grads, and I hope you all can come with me as I journey to getting my bachelors

Deity Studies: Lilith
Lilith, a figure of immense complexity and enduring fascination, has intrigued scholars, mystics, and artists for centuries. Her narrative spans ancient Mesopotamian mythology, Jewish folklore, Christian tradition, and modern reinterpretations. This comprehensive study of Lilith sheds light on her multifaceted nature and the diverse ways she has been perceived and venerated throughout history.
Origins of Lilith
Before she was a feminist icon and a Pinterest board muse, Lilith had some humble beginnings. In ancient Mesopotamian texts, Lilith is depicted as a demon or spirit associated with the wind and storms. In Sumerian mythology, she is referred to as "Lilitu," a dangerous, winged demon who preyed on pregnant women and infants. Talk about a dramatic entrance into history!
Her first gig was a cameo in the "Gilgamesh" epic, one of the oldest known literary works, where she’s hanging out in the Huluppu Tree, likely causing some trouble. Clearly, Lilith was destined for bigger things than just being a wind spirit with a bad rep.
Lilith’s character gets a serious makeover as she moves into Jewish mythology, proving that even ancient beings can rebrand. Enter the "Alphabet of Ben Sira," a medieval text that gives Lilith a juicy backstory: She was the first wife of Adam, made from the same earth. But unlike Eve, Lilith wasn’t about that subservient life. She wanted equality and independence, which led to her dramatic exit to the Red Sea. It’s like the first season finale of a supernatural drama!
In later Jewish folklore, particularly in the Kabbalah, Lilith evolves again, this time into a demoness associated with the dangers of childbirth and the seduction of men. Think of her as the original femme fatale, with protective amulets and incantations used to ward off her malevolent influence, especially around newborns and mothers.
Lilith didn’t stop there; she made her way into Christian tradition too. While she doesn't get as much screen time here, early Christian writings often drew on Jewish traditions, portraying her as a symbol of evil and temptation. By the Medieval and Renaissance periods, Lilith was all over art and literature, often depicted as a dangerous temptress. She was sometimes conflated with Eve or the Whore of Babylon, representing the archetypal fallen woman. Medieval artists and writers sure knew how to milk a scandal.
Lilith in Modern Culture
Fast forward to the present day, and Lilith is everywhere – from feminist manifestos to your favorite TV shows. Modern views often celebrate Lilith as a symbol of female empowerment and independence.
Feminist scholars and writers have reclaimed Lilith as the ultimate rebel with a cause. Her story is a powerful narrative of a woman who chose autonomy and self-determination over subjugation. This reinterpretation has inspired various works of literature, art, and activism. It’s like Lilith went from the misunderstood villain to the anti-heroine we all secretly root for.
Lilith’s presence in popular culture is extensive, spanning literature, film, television, and music. She’s a bit of a cultural chameleon, appearing in all sorts of contexts.
Literature: Lilith shows up in works by authors like George MacDonald and Neil Gaiman, often as a complex and powerful figure.
Television and Film: Shows like "Supernatural" and "True Blood" have featured Lilith as a character, usually emphasizing her demonic and seductive traits.
Music: The Lilith Fair, a music festival founded by Sarah McLachlan, celebrates female musicians and draws inspiration from Lilith's mythological legacy. You know you've made it when you have a festival named after you!
Lilith in Modern Paganism and Occultism
Lilith holds a significant place in modern pagan and occult practices. She is revered by some as a goddess, a symbol of liberation, and a guide for personal transformation.
In modern pagan traditions, Lilith is often honored as a goddess of independence, sexuality, and feminine power. Rituals and invocations dedicated to Lilith emphasize her role as a protector of women and a source of strength. It's like she’s the spiritual equivalent of Wonder Woman, but with more edge.
Lilith's association with dark and forbidden knowledge makes her a potent figure in various occult traditions. Practitioners of witchcraft, ceremonial magic, and other esoteric disciplines often invoke Lilith for empowerment and transformation. She’s the go-to gal for those looking to add a bit of dark feminine energy to their practice.
Lilith's journey from ancient demon to modern icon reflects the evolving nature of mythology and the power of reinterpretation. Whether seen as a malevolent spirit, a symbol of feminist resistance, or a goddess of empowerment, Lilith continues to captivate and inspire. Her story is a testament to the enduring human need to explore, challenge, and redefine the archetypes that shape our understanding of the world.

I often wonder what the actual state of medicine as a field is in dragonfable. We see that Magus Neron has a microscope, petri dishes, and hypodermic syringes. We know that the existence of cells is a known thing. Clearly we're not living in a pre-germ theory equivalent. But we also don't really see doctors around- alchemists like Alina seem to be the pick. Sir Junn is the only example I can really think of, and he also seems to be oriented towards alchemical solutions like the royal honey and corruption-cleansing potions, though we do have mentions of him using IVs in an ICU in his field hospital.
Healing potions would certainly be good for physical injuries, but I wonder at how well they treat illnesses and diseases. Are they a cure-all that's become so heavily relied on that, in the rare cases they don't work, nobody knows what else to do? Riadne's arachnomancy healing, delivering potions directly into the bloodstream, is treated as revolutionary, so I assume that pills or IV drips and infusions have not been popularized enough to be commonly used. Is that because potions as they currently exist are good enough for most applications, or because most people don't know how to use them, or because they're difficult to create or get ahold of? There are incredible technologies out there, as evidenced by the magisterium's drones and the gnomes'... everything. But whether or not these advances have ever been applied to medical applications has also never really been shown.
We've seen many examples of healing magic in lore, but the capabilities and limitations of it, as well as the actual process, are never really explored. Is it an actual active process of changing the body, or is it just empowering the natural healing process? We know that fleshweaving is a thing, but forbidden as an art due to its potential for abuse (and the fact that it apparently requires consuming elemental spirits), and Jaania's soulweaving-based healing of Brittany was a method she apparently invented through experimentation. So we can conclude that soul/fleshweaving are not being employed as a tool for medicine, and any commonly used healing magic probably doesn't modify the body in such a way.
There's lots of potential for medical technology and practice to improve, so one has to wonder what factors are at play to ensure they don't. Is it just reliance on the magic that already exists, leaving the people with rare cases to be untreated? I wonder if, to a degree, there's a perception of standard alchemy being "good enough" that medicine doesn't need to be improved. Perhaps that's compounded with some cultural taboos around "messing with" or manipulating the body, which may extend beyond magical practice into the scientific sphere. It could even be an acceptance of a flawed paradigm surrounding healing magic, just like how most mages accepted the leyline model of mana as absolute, when soulthreads demonstrate that it's flawed?
Or maybe the devs intended it all to remain in the mcguffin realm, where healing magic does everything you want when it's convenient and is limited only when necessary. But that's less fun to think about.

Salt Bowl For Broken Crystals
I've never seen anyone do anything like this for broken crystals, so I thought I'd share a practice I've picked up since I've started my own journey in my craft. This is my personal take on salt charging dishes in which I use salt, herbs, and incense ash to heal my broken crystals.
I have an unnatural obsession with fluorite, and I also happen to be someone with chronic butter fingers when it comes to crystals. I decided to gather all my broken pieces of fluorite and preform my own practice to seal them and basically make them new again by restoring their lost energy by allowing them to absorb more energy.
For this practice, I simply picked a dish I felt drawn to that would fit all my broken pieces, then I added my salt to the dish. I used the tip of my finger to draw a spiral in the salt pile with the intention in my mind of drawing energy towards the dish by drawing the spiral. I then added my choices of a couple healing herbs and incense ash before adding my broken shards. For this practice, I only used the shards of the crystals that I wanted to be the "new" sealed crystal; most of the shards that were left when they originally broke were too small and plentiful to keep track of, so I didn't (my bad). After adding all my desired crystals, I circled the dish with my lit incense with the intention of drawing energy near. I meditated for a couple minutes and set my intentions clear and firmly of what I wanted to become of the crystals after the practice, then I stored the dish in a safe, open area for them to remain charging until I feel that they're new again.

I'm gathering notes on the practice of chaos magick with the aim of linking them to the practice of art (and music) in relation with my personal paradigm so that I can really get back into some things, and I'm transcribing some notes from Jan Fries' Visual Magick into my journal, and I see Fries say this:
If you try to learn 'automatic' drawing, you are creating a gate through which the deep may reveal itself.
I'm liking the framing of automatic drawing and the pursuit of learning it as "creating a gate through which the deep may reveal itself", because it connects to something I was expressing last year, after reading Revolutionary Demonology.
I must create in ways that bring demons and the demonic into the world, and in turn I must make myself demonic, so that I may propel towards the absolute and become divine.
I hope I'm not wrong in thinking I've stumbled on a way to bring demons into the world through artistic practice. 😈

⚠️Warning: Religion⚠️
However I’m not religious, I have taken on a project of comparing the Satanic Bible to the Holy Bible and this is only some of what I found interesting! Thought I’d share:)
The Satanic Bible talks in a POV of you, and you finding your inner voice to rise up and let others hear you, instead of a all mighty god, higher being or higher power and I find that more reliable then the Holy Bible and a lot less confusing.
Please share your thoughts of this in the comments! I would love to hear them, and I am very open minded and civil to all!
I love learn about history and faith others have:)

My own unique spiritual journey... 🦋
The main reason and primary goal for getting into spirituality, quite honestly, was to ascend out of this insane world, but with time, learning and a smack in the face from the Gods, I've come to learn (much to my initial dismay) that the physical world is just as important as the Spiritual.
I, so very much, did not want to learn that we, in the physical realm, gave the magic of creation the space, time, and tools to manifest, to exist. The bridge between what could be and what is. We, the artists, the inventors, the scientists, the architects, the alchemists, help creations come into existence. That, in itself, is irreplaceable. Matter is the instrument through which Spirit expresses itself.
So, because I am not one to deny a truth revealed, my question to myself became:
How do I align myself to my most divine expression?
... Enter the onslaught of discovery and research. I don't, at all, like to follow established systems, rituals, structures, etc when it comes to Spirituality - I do what I feel, and what provides results; so everything very much started from complete scratch.
There were 3 key parts I realised I needed to consider.
Myself. What is true of it?
My expression. How does it manifest?
What is conducive & what is harmful to the truth of myself.
If Earth/the Physical/the Lower Realm is a tool of the force of Creation, it is a tool I need to be able to use. Which means, I :
Need to be in good Health.
Need to have at least a vague idea of who I am, outside of the influence of the outer world.
Need to be able to make manifest the ideas/emotions/instincts/projects that come to me through inspiration.
Remove any physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual blocks, beliefs or definitions that do not serve me on the path to genuine alignment.
This does, by extension means that everything became spiritual to me in a way. Everything was/is a chance for me to be more true to myself - who I wanted to be despite the outer world, despite validation or condemnation.
I got into skincare, exercise, selfcare, painting, fragrances, writing, reading new material, self-improvement/self-actualization, fashion, recently I've been trying to learn more about the culinary arts to find more flavours that speak to me.
From larger forms of expression to the tiny things, it's where I am now. Learning what exists in the physical world that sings to me.
In hightening my connection to my own spiritual energy & life force it helps manifesting what I need on my journey, which is important to me.
Anyways, trying to learn enough about the "lower realm" so I can marry it with the "higher realm", that's where I am now. Its fun, living a healthier lifestyle, finding out what feels more true than others, what creative pursuits I'm learning I'm good at.

Hi there, can I get a cloud divination reading? I was wondering if I’ll receive a fully funded study abroad opportunity starting in the beginning of 2025. Thank you for your insight :)
cloud divination
Looking at the clouds, here’s what I see about the possibility of receiving a fully funded study abroad opportunity starting in early 2025:
The first cloud resembles a large, open book, suggesting that the opportunity is aligned with your academic and personal growth. This indicates that the chance for study abroad is very much connected to your learning journey and ambitions. 📖
Next, there’s a cluster of clouds that appear as arrows pointing forward. This symbolizes progress and direction, hinting that there are positive developments and a strong likelihood of moving towards this opportunity. ➡️
Finally, I see a cloud that forms a gentle arch, indicating that the path to receiving this opportunity might involve some preliminary steps and adjustments, but it is ultimately heading in the right direction. 🌈
I hope this gave you clarity. Want to know more? Whether it's about love, career, or any other topic, let's get the full picture with a personal reading just for you. Click the link and join me on this journey!

Opening the door for Petitioning Ganesha
I am opening this for a few days, maybe until Wednesday 5th of April. Ganesha is known for being lord of obstacles and remover of obstacles both mundane and spiritual, a cross-road god and a gatekeeper, if anything he's a very benevolent god. I have a small ganesha Murti at home, and I welcome everyone to come and write their petition here, as a reblog, or through the ask, or they can send it to me to my discord in my profile. You can add your initials or something to identify you when I write it for him. The door is open for everyone and it is a free service. I will personally write the petition, seal it, and offer date, rose, and rose water alongside of it. I am going to perform a small puja for Ganesha alongside the offered paper, after the petition if there's any signs I might post it/repost it for people to know if there's a sign. You can ask in your petition if you have any inquiry from Ganesha for him to answer you in your dreams or through another method. Hail to the Lord of Vows, hail to Ganapati, hail to the First Lord, hail unto you, to the Big-Bellied, One-tusked, Obstacle-destroyer, the Son of Shiva, to the Boon-Giver, Hail, hail.
