Speak No Evil (15): There Ain't Nobody Does "Deranged" better than James McAvoy.
One Mann's Movies Film Review of "Speak No Evil". A remake of the bleak 2022 original that is pure edge-of-the-seat entertainment. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Speak No Evil” (2024). Just back from a very pleasant, but cinema-free, two weeks in Portugal. So I have a bit of catching up to do with the latest releases. First off the block is this James Watkins remake of the original Danish horror/thriller “Speak No Evil”. And very entertaining it is too. Sebastian Stan Talks ‘The Apprentice’s Uphill Battle, Double Golden Globe Nomination, Lily James Reteam ‘Let The Evil Go West’ & Upcoming Cristian Mungiu & Justin Kurzel Projects
By Matt Grobar
On Monday, Sebastian Stan pulled off a rare feat, scoring Golden Globe nominations for Lead Actor in both Drama and Musical/Comedy categories. Following the announcement, Stan got candid about upcoming projects with Cristian Mungiu, Christian Tafdrup and Justin Kurzel, his experience on the awards circuit with his nominated turn as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, and more.
In discussing his upcoming slate, Stan seemed particularly excited about a project not yet announced with Cristian Mungiu, the Romanian filmmaker behind Palme d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which he expects to shoot next year.
“I was born in Romania. I still speak the language, and I’ve been trying to find a project where I can go back and tap back into that history that I have,” said the actor, “so I’m excited about working with him, and hopefully that’s going to come together.”
A second project on the docket is Let the Evil Go West, a horror thriller from buzzy Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup, which reunites him with Pam & Tommy‘s Lily James. The film centers on a railroad worker driven to madness after coming upon a fortune, and his wife, who believes an evil presence has attached itself to their family.
Stan came to the project after seeing Tafdrup’s “unbelievable” horror thriller Speak No Evil, which Universal just remade. “This is a project that’s been going on for a while, and it always gets tricky. It’s about finding the right scheduling and the right time to do it,” said the actor. “But that’s something I’m really excited about.”
While he didn’t get into details, Stan also confirmed that he’s attached to star in Burning Rainbow Farm, a film that The Order‘s Justin Kurzel has in development. Plot details are unconfirmed, but we hear it’s inspired by true events, involving two marijuana advocates who face off against the FBI in a tense five-day standoff in Michigan, culminating in tragedy just days before 9/11.
Stan’s Globe nominations this morning came for Briarcliff’s The Apprentice, which examines Trump’s rise in the 1970s and 1980s New York real estate scene, as well as A24’s A Different Man. Hailing from filmmaker Aaron Schimberg, that title has him playing a man with a disfigurement who undergoes an experimental facial reconstruction surgery, before spiraling into a psychological crisis.
“Stunned and incredibly ecstatic,” Stan shared that the nominations are gratifying given the risks he took with each project and the uphill battles faced with each — The Apprentice, in particular, which struggled to secure financing, and later, distribution, amid the threat of a lawsuit from Trump himself. The project is one Hollywood didn’t seem to know what to do with, both leading up to and in the aftermath of a polarizing, pivotal election.
Sharing that he had “extreme trepidations” about playing Trump — in part, because many in the industry advised him not to — Stan reflected this morning about a disclosure of his that went viral: that while he intended to appear on Variety’s video series Actors on Actors in support of The Apprentice, no actor would step up to talk with him about his project, presumably out of fear of saying the wrong thing.
“For me, the Variety thing was just unfortunately another example of the uphill battle that the movie had been facing since Cannes, that there was some hesitancy and some fear around it…But it wasn’t my intention to point a finger or blame anybody else,” Stan said. “It was just simply saying, ‘Hey, we should be mindful of things that feel fearful.’ Because as artists, we have to hold ourselves as sort of the ambassadors of the truth, in a way…Today, of course, is a big day, in terms of hopefully allowing people to feel like they have permission, to talk about this film, and look at the work and have a conversation about it.”
From Stan’s perspective, we as a society need “all kinds of movies” and “have to try to not ever discriminate against any movie,” even if it’s something as polarizing as The Apprentice. In terms of the current climate of fear among Hollywood stars, when it comes to addressing certain topics, Stan’s feeling is that “there’s always a conversation that we can have about the work and what goes into it.”
A recent speech on Stan’s mind, when it comes to this, is the one given by honoree Richard Curtis at the Governors Awards. “He went up there and said, ‘Look, I am grateful to be standing up here and be recognized this evening. Buts also, I want to say, we love good ideas and we love embracing good ideas, but we also have to follow through on the action of it, even when you get to the last one-yard line, trying to get past it,'” the actor recalls. “Because I know the intentions are always good, and I believe that movies can inspire. I think they can reveal things sometimes that we have a hard time maybe understanding or communicating about in day-to-day life.”
In reflecting on the bold and diverse resume he’s carved out over the last decade-plus, Stan gave credit to his “Marvel family” for being an “incredibly supportive,” consistent presence in his life over the last 15 years, which has allowed him to “go out there and find other projects that allow me to kind of change it up and challenge myself.”
This, he says, is what he wants more than anything. “I’ve always tried to find other actors to learn from and grow from, and I want to be part of something meaningful,” Stan says, “and maybe that’s just me getting older. You want the work to have meaning and to stand for something.”

SPEAK NO EVIL – Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures
SYNOPSIS: During a vacation in Italy, the Dalton Family encounters Paddy, Ciara, and their son Ant. Their paths intertwine, leading to an invitation from Paddy for the Daltons to visit his rustic countryside British estate. A postcard serves as a reminder of the invitation, prompting the Americans to embrace the opportunity to leave their troubles behind for a holiday in the tranquil British countryside. However, what initially appears to be an idyllic escape for the Daltons quickly transforms into a psychological nightmare as they find themselves fighting for their very survival.
REVIEW: James Watkins's film SPEAK NO EVIL is an adaptation of the 2022 Danish horror sensation Gæsterne, written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. The original Danish film is a thought-provoking morality tale that explores various themes such as nationality, class differences, and political beliefs. While Watkins's retelling retains some of these elements, it transforms the film into a more Americanized and shocking horror experience, altering the film's overall impact.
In this slick Hollywood film, the technical aspects are robust, and the performances captivating. James McAvoy delivers a remarkable performance, reminiscent of his dark character "The Beast" in "Split" and "Glass." His portrayal is both mesmerizing and terrifying, but it overshadows the film's narrative.
In order to address my concerns with the film, there will be spoilers ahead.
The appeal of the Danish film lies in the nuanced and gradual transformation of Patrick, a seemingly ordinary character, into a horrifying monster. Patrick's portrayal lacks the exaggeration of a caricature, making him feel genuine and believable. This authenticity enhances the tension and horror as the viewer witnesses Patrick's predatory instincts unfold. The initial plausibility of the Swedish family's visit to the countryside sets the stage for the subsequent events, which take a sinister turn, becoming increasingly unsettling, primal, and ultimately shocking.
Whether or not you have seen the original movie, Paddy stands out as an intense and extreme character from his very first appearance in the retelling. There is an immediate sense of unease, a gut feeling that things will not end well for the Daltons.
In the retelling of the story, various elements are skillfully manipulated. A notable aspect of the Danish film is its deliberate omission of guns, a clever plot twist that culminates in a shocking climax, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer.
In the Danish film, Patrick's admission that he is not a doctor prompts an explanation for his deception. This pivotal moment intensifies the story's peril. In the remake, after Paddy’s explanation it cuts to the shock on the Daltons' faces as then as Paddy laughingly explains he was merely joking. While this aligns with his character's manipulative nature, it seems derivative of many genre films. The audience recognizes that Paddy is lying, making the scene feel pointless.
The Dalton family, originally from the United States, has relocated to London. They received this invitation to a rustic estate deep in the British countryside. As they embark on their journey in their Tesla,I had to question the practicality of their choice of vehicle. What charging options are available at the farm and along the remote countryside roads One has to wonder if this decision foreshadows their lack of understanding about the experience they are about to encounter.
In contrast to its predecessor, the film veers into a familiar horror trope, as the Daltons and Ant fortify themselves within a farmhouse while Paddy, Ciara, and Mike attempt to gain entry to eliminate them. Unlike the conventions of most horror films, Louise Dalton's maternal instincts awaken, prompting her to fight back as Ben Dalton exhibits cowardice. McAvoy's character undergoes a transformation from a plotting, conniving killer, and becomes the quintessential enraged, reactionary villain.
In the Danish film, the bold narrative deviates from conventional storytelling by challenging the triumph of good over evil, as innocent characters succumb to their fate. This contrasts with the American remake, where the prey escapes and Ant's brutal actions, akin to the parents' murder in the original film, are unleashed with a primal scream. The American version could be interpreted as a liberalized adaptation of the impactful Danish film or simply a watered-down, Americanized rendition of another great foreign masterpiece. This trend can be observed in other American remakes, such as "The Vanishing," "Nightwatch," and "Let the Right One In."
While the intention behind the reimagining of SPEAK NO EVIL is understandable, the execution falls short. The film heavily borrows elements from the Danish original that made it a critical success, but these crucial aspects are replaced by generic genre film action. As a result, SPEAK NO EVIL loses its cerebral horror and relies heavily on reactionary scares to elicit a cheap thrill from the audience. This approach may provide 2025’s Universal Halloween Horror Nights with another attraction but fails to capture the essence of the original film.
If you haven't watched the 2022 Danish film, you're likely to appreciate McAvoy's performance and the abundant jump scares. However, if you have seen the original, you might be let down by the oversimplification of the content, reducing it to the level of "fast food" - not even of the quality of Five Guys, Shake Shack, or McDonald's, but rather comparable to White Castle. Nevertheless, who can resist an occasional craving for sliders throughout the year?

Review of Speak No Evil (2024): James McAvoy Is Outstanding
Based on a 2022 Danish film directed by Christian and Mads Tafdrup, "Speak No Evil" If you were among those who witnessed it, you could find the actions taken with it to be infuriating HD Movies Soap2Day. The end result is almost identical to those behind-the-scenes stories where a test screening audience rebelled and demanded that the bad guys be punished violently, so the filmmakers shot a new ending. The movie became extremely successful, and everyone left feeling that they had made the right choice because their bank accounts were fattened. Fans of foreign art-house psychological horror might even be reminded by viewing the original and the remake of "Speak No Evil."

Lily and Sebastian’s New Horror Thriller: Let The Evil Go West
Christian Tafdrup is brewing a new horror thriller flick in his director’s seat and the main faces of the film will be none other than Lily James and Sebastian Stan. Here's everything we know so far. Penned by Xc Vs and directed by Christian Tafdrup, Let The Evil Go West is an upcoming psychological-thriller horror film that will make you look over your shoulder in the dark. north.five.six, CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are on the task of launching the feature’s sales in Cannes. Since the film is still in the early stages of pre-production, the release date isn’t known, but it’s for sure, given Tafdrup’s directorial track record, comprising of his debut feature Parents (2016), A Horrible Woman (2017) and Danish psychological thriller Speak No Evil (2022), the upcoming movie will pack a horrifying punch. Let the Evil Go West – The Plot Thickens Produced by Star Thrower Entertainment, Let The Evil Go West follows the story of a railroad worker. Under terrible and unsettling circumstances, he uncovers a fortune. However, all that glitters isn’t gold and a series of unfortunate and terrifying incidents begin to plague the small family. Soon, apparitions and inexplicable visions drive the man to the brink of madness. He and his wife are convinced that whatever he found, unleashed a malicious spirit and is haunting them. We're not expecting a dull moment with Christian Tafdrup and his creatively dark and horror-loving energy. We’ll just have to wait and see if Let The Evil Go West has that scare-you-out-of-your-skin potential. The Perfect Pairing The leading cast of Let The Evil Go West includes Lily James and Sebastian Stan, both of who’ll also be executive producing. Lily James has previously starred in a comedy-horror post-apocalyptic movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2015), but she has that natural knack for mastering any role she takes, so she’s the perfect actress to balance the movie with her charm and brimming talent for the role. She’s known for her titular role in the Disney live-action feature Cinderella (2015) and Downton Abbey (2012-2015). Sebastian Stan has worked in various roles throughout his career. His suave personality paired with his Hollywood smile is a winning combination in movies. He has starred in A Different Man (2024), as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Comic Universe (MCU), and in an upcoming Cannes release, The Apprentice (2024) as young Donald Trump. The Stars Collide Again Lily James and Sebastian Stan will be pairing again, after their successful run of the black comedy-crime Hulu miniseries Pam and Tommy (2022). It’s based on the whirlwind marriage of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee and their chaotic 4-day honeymoon in Cancun. During this trip a raunchy and indecent tape of the couple gets leaked online. Since the dynamic duo is on the screen, that too for a chilling and dreadful film, then you know it’s going to be good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7p2gClUmfM Read the full article
