If the show had kept Chim's rebar scar then Maddie would have married someone with a live-fast-die-young attitude, a mark on his head, a brother he never knew about from a parent who never loved him always looking to find a family and settles down after he finds one with his partner and kid. Coincidentally, he also loves Halloween and believes in curses.
And obviously Chimney married a former medical professional now first responder parent who is still healing from their first relationship and how it ended in death. Nevermind the fact that the traumatized, brown haired, brown eyed eldest sibling was parentified at a young age due to neglect.
Like wouldn't it be so silly that the Buckley siblings finally found someone else to fight the world with in people like the each other?

So while watching the episode last night, I noticed that the talk between Buck and Eddie gave off a very partner vibe, something similar to Maddie and Chimney or Bobby and Athena for example.
I knew it was in the details such as the lighting, the set up, the dialogue, the framing, and the overall feel of the scene but I also just noticed this little parallel:
youtube
youtube
Eddie is making a sandwich when Buck walks in and gets Buck water to drink. Then they have their talk.
Chim is making tea while talking to Maddie about Buck and pours her a cup.
youtube
And then we have the contrasting vibe of the two scenes (despite Maddie and Eddie being paralleled consistently throughout the last couple of seasons) of Buck opening up and talking:
youtube
And yet the parallels are still there:
Maddie: "And I didn't want to ask for help because I didn't want to be a burden. But then I just kept drifting farther away until..."
Buck: "Until you were gone."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this very same episode both Maddie and Eddie are now in a position to help Buck go through his own ordeal, the difference is Eddie is not pushing & he's going at Buck's chosen pace while Maddie is pushing (that's not a criticism, she's the big sister & he did technically die so I get it, she wants him to be okay) which brings me back to:
Tumblr media
5x04 -
Buck: "He just doesn't know her the way I do."
Eddie: "Or you don't know her the way he does. When you think of your sister, you see this person you've always looked up to, the woman who's taken care of you, but maybe that's not who she is right now. This time, maybe she's the one who needs taking care of." (him attempting to reassure Buck while also explaining where Chim was coming from)
6x12 -
Maddie: "He was suspicious of the pot roast but he figured it out by Sudoku."
Chim: "As much as I like making fun of your brother, he's not an actual idiot. Which is good news because I know you're worried about him doing too much too fast, but I think he's taking his recovery seriously." (him attempting to reassure Maddie and pull her back a bit)
Which very much plays into Buck and Eddie's scene in 6x12 in the kitchen, and then the dialogue of that scene comes back into play in Buck and Maddie's later scene:
Eddie: "Every day you open your eyes in the morning, you feel a little less surprised the world's still there."
Buck: "When I wake up, and I mean like every single time, I have this checklist now, run in my head. A way to test that I'm really here."
Maddie: "What do you check?"
Buck: "First, time of day. It's never night in my coma dream. Then I text Bobby..."
And while Buck is opening up to Maddie about this and didn't give Eddie this detail, there is also another contrast they gave us between the two scenes.
When talking to Maddie, Buck is very much Buck. Even when telling her about his checklist. He's not completely vulnerable.
But when talking to Eddie, when he asks if he can ask if Buck is okay, we see a truly vulnerable Buck:
Tumblr media
Oliver plays this scene in this way with the dialogue of "Honestly, Eddie...I don't know."
And the vulnerability continues as Eddie talks to him:
Tumblr media
We didn't see vulnerable Buck with Maddie (in their earlier scene as well), Josh, or Connor. And while that makes sense for the last two, it doesn't with Maddie. We saw a little bit with Hen, but here his vulnerability is on full display.
They really went all out this episode to not only connect Eddie's and Buck's stories together even further, but also I think to start showing us (and the GA) how these two are going to become the 4th main pairing of the show.
There was no other reason for that Eddie and Buck scene to happen the way it did. The fact that it happens in the kitchen with dimmed lighting should tells us everything we need to know.
Especially since:

And even:

I love the madney and buddie parallels, ESPECIALLY when Buck and Eddie talk about Maddie leaving in S5 and Eddie tells Buck that Chim knows Maddie in a different way to him, and might have different ideas of what she needs, and then in S6 after the lightning, when Buck is overwhelmed by Maddie's help, he runs to Eddie, who knows what Buck needs in that situation.
Maddie and Buck had a traumatic childhood and both revert back to their old perceptions of each other when they're stressed, which is why Buck accepted Maddie leaving and why Maddie felt so desperate to protect and care for Buck after the lightning.
And both Chimney and Eddie are presented as contrasts to this, people who have a complex understanding of the people that Eddie and Buck have grown into. They both represent safety and growth for the Buckley siblings.

Okay, so this is a parallel of 7x04, right?? Buck takes an action, somebody gets hurt, & he spirals about whether he actually meant to hurt them or not.
Iā€™ve been thinking about the difference between Maddie & Eddieā€™s reactions for a week already, but tonight sent it home for me.
Maddie said ā€œitā€™s not like you meant to hurt him.ā€ Even though she doesnā€™t automatically assume that he did, thatā€™s still her first thought. When Buck hesitates & says he doesnā€™t know for sure, she immediately scolds him. ā€œThatā€™s not how you get someoneā€™s attention, we donā€™t hurt the people we care about.ā€ Given her backstory, it makes sense.
Eddieā€™s automatic thought is, ā€œYou saved him.ā€ Thereā€™s no doubt in Eddieā€™s mind that Buck meant to help, not harm. It doesnā€™t even enter his thought process. When Buck freaks out, Eddie canā€™t think of why he would be doing that, bc Buck saved Gerrardā€™s life. What else could have happened?
Buck & Maddie will always see each other the way they did growing up, even if only in a small part of their minds. Maddie is Superman who has everything under control & all the answers, and Buck is the one who reacts rashly & causes damage for a scrap of attention. Their childhood was so intense & they only really had each other, they were literally in the trenches together their entire childhood, so there will always be bias there.
& Iā€™m thinking of Eddie telling Buck in s5 that maybe Chimney knew Maddie better than Buck did. That maybe the partners they have now are able to see them clearer than their siblings.
Eddieā€™s trust & belief in Buck is steady & unwavering, even when Buck doesnā€™t believe in himself and it makes me want to SCREAM a little bit bc oh my god.
I have no idea where theyā€™re going with this arc, but WOW I canā€™t wait.

So we know math is a Buddie theme. "I aced my math test." "I thought about using my newfound math skills to do my taxes." But let's look at this a bit closer.
We have Madney (a couple and two characters who are have been paralleled to Buddie & Buck and Eddie) being audited. They have no idea why. They're nervous, Chim is spiraling, Maddie accepts the inevitable though she was worried at first. Chim keeps thinking about jail and other people who are purposely defrauding the IRS.
Maddie: "Tax fraud? No, no, no, we--"
Chim: "We're not criminals. I mean, look at us. We're not frauds, either, we're actually very genuine."
They bicker about who was supposed to file as Head of Household and what share of the expenses they pay. They both also claimed Jee as their dependent. "Oh, I didn't know you were going to claim Jee." "I don't think we really discussed it." (I think he says this, I can't quite make it out)
Chim: "I think that's just an honest mistake."
Auditor: "Hmm, two for two?"
Maddie: "Is there more?"
Auditor: "You tell me."
Then they 'fess up to everything, forcing the auditor to try to keep up and to assure them that they're okay with that stuff.
Chim: "Are we going to debter's prison?"
Auditor: "This isn't a Dickens novel." -> this isn't the past
Maddie: "That's what I said." -> she/Eddie already knew that
Auditor: "We just send people to regular prison now." -> this is the present (can be seen as referencing LGBTQIA+ or for Buck and Eddie's stories together and separately)
"You will also need to decide who is the Head of your household." -> "We could switch every year." "I love that idea. Let's alternate." "Love it." -> two firefighters who most likely make the same amount of income per year where there's a child in the mix (and possibly more), just sayin'
The very next scene, we get the Buck and Natalia date where Natalia is wearing red.
All of this leads to: Since math is a Buddie theme and Madney are being audited (and Buck's date is the next scene), the writers are telling us to absolutely sit up and pay attention. They are the auditors per se. They are putting Buddie under the microscope, together and separately.
And once again we see how far along Eddie (Maddie/Christopher) really is in comparison to Buck (Chim) when it comes to the future.

They have set themselves up for a perfect parallel if Buck is the one actually getting kidnapped in spring premier instead of Maddie.
Let me set the stage, Eddie is in Texas doing some final views and meetings for the house he wants to buy. He's not in LA when Buck initially goes missing.
The 118 are on a 48 off, and considering that Buck has been actively and loudly avoiding his phone and they all have their own problems to deal with, they wouldn't necessarily notice if he had gone missing. It wouldn't be until Buck didn't show up to his shift that anyone would notice what went wrong.
However, there is one person that might notice, but can't do anything because he's in Texas. And I think that fact that they very clearly showed Eddie's call history, and that he has no missed calls with Buck (while Buck is avoiding his phone), means that he would notice if Buck missed his phone call.
So Eddie gets a sign that something is wrong with Buck and can't either contact anyone about it, or they all brush it off.
You know when that has happened before?
When the 911 dispatch center was taken hostage and no one believed initially believed Chim that something was wrong.
When the cruise ship was in danger and no one initially believed Hen that something was wrong?
Like, it's happened before, it will happen again.
