Aaliyah appears on the MTV Total Request Live Top 100 Countdown for all the hits for the year of 1998 in preperation of the coming of the new year (1999).
At 11pm EST on this day, she later goes down to the street level and is seen sporting her 1999 New Years glasses and dressed from head to toe in an all black outfit (coat, gloves and all), preparing for the countdown to begin.

On my Way to Work, Part Three
I’ll do a short series of posts now showing what I saw every day on my way to work back in 1991 or 1992. Picking up from my previous post at the Empire State Building, I’ll continue down Fifth Avenue to my destination on 22nd Street.
I’m not certain of the use of, or need for, the netting we see strung up over the sidewalk at the ESB—perhaps the facade of the great edifice was being worked on. A bit further downtown of that icon is yet another—the Flatiron Building, located on 23rd Street and Broadway, adjacent to Madison Square Park.
[I have no picture, here, but there is yet another iconic structure off Madison Square Park—the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building, built a few years after the Flatiron, in 1909.]
While the Flatiron, originally called the Fuller Building, was completed in 1902, it cannot be said to be one of the earliest skyscrapers, much to my surprise. This term came to be used in the 19th century (in Chicago) for buildings that used steel for a sturdy skeleton as well as elevators (invented by some guy named Otis) to get people up and down without the need to take to the stairs. The Flatiron, however, could be called one of the most distinctive of skyscrapers. The second and third images presented here provide that distinctive shape one might think of for the Flatiron. And the final picture shows that I could actually gaze upon the Fifth Avenue and 22nd Street sides of the famous building while in the studio where I worked—as long as I opened the window and leaned a fair bit outward!
Four images by Richard Koenig; taken 1991 or 1992.

#OnThisDay December 31, 1998
Rare video of Aaliyah appearing on the MTV Total Request Live Top 100 Countdown for all the hits for the year of 1998 in preperation of the coming of the new year (1999).

Later in the live TV event, Ananda Lewis interviews pop Boy Band "98 Degrees" and ask who they would like to kiss when the ball drops and they respond "Aaliyah". The camera later pans over to Aaliyah and TV host Dave Holmes, where Aaliyah responds that she was flattered.

Grab Your Umbrella
The refreshing rain
Hello friends, today is the 3rd of March and it has been raining the past 2 days. The weather experts predict we will see the sun peek through this afternoon. Savannah is classified as a subtropical climate, with short winters. Even on a sunny day a thunderstorm may roll in and out. For this reason I keep an umbrella and raincoat in my car. This first postcard was made in 1908 and shows two birds ("Bird's eye view" get it?) outside the Flatiron building at Fifth Avenue and Twenty-third Street, in New York City. Because of the Flatiron's unique shape and its location along a broad crosstown thoroughfare, strong winds swirl near its base. When the building first opened, men used to flock to Madison Square to watch women walking by in the hope that the air currents would sweep up their skirts and reveal a glimpse of stocking. This is exactly what is depicted in the postcard above: the gentleman in the background is giving a knowing wink as the lady's skirt and petticoats blow up, revealing her ankles. How risque! In real life, there were a number of police officers posted to the Flatiron to encourage ogling men to move along. One common phrase they employed was "twenty-three skidoo!" Skidoo is a relative of skedaddle and means "to move along" or "go away." The number 23 was long thought to be a reference to the Twenty-Third Street; thus "23 skidoo" meant "stop hanging out on Twenty-Third Street." However, it turns out that "23" was already a slang term for "get lost" before there was a Flatiron building, cited at least as early as 1899. What seems plausible is that the police wanted to get rid of men in front of the Flatiron, so combined two already existing phrases that each meant scram - - "twenty-three" and "skidoo" - - into a phrase that had a double meaning. Card #2 is from 1910. #vintageillustration #vintagepostcard #postcard #1900s #vintagenewyork #vintagenyc #nyc #newyorkcity #vintageflatiron #flatiron #23skidoo #23rdstreet #madisonsquare #girlwatching https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm-EvETPz1m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Metropolitan Life Tower in #MadisonSquare was the tallest building in the world from 1909 to 1913 – before being surpassed by the #Woolworth – and had the highest elevators in the world. The highest elevator traveled 586 feet from the basement to the top of the tower at a speed of 600 feet per minute, the maximum permitted by the Department of Buildings in 1910. As seen in the image above, the heavy elevator motors were installed in the tight space at the tip of the tower above the elevators. #metlifetower #madisonsquarepark #skyscraper #architecture #archilovers #structuralengineering #otiselevators #buildingtechnology #architecturehistory #nomad #urbanism #nycurbanism (at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower)
