Happy Birthday Marie!
@offwithhxrhead You requested a story where Madeline meets someone who could potentially be a new romantic interest, and I hope I have delivered:
--
“WOOOOO!”
Madeline eagerly joined in the clapping and stomping of feet as The Pondcrossers finished up their set and departed from the stage. “Awesome show, huh?” a guy next to her said, eyes bright.
“You know it!” Madeline agreed with a beaming grin. “Best night out I’ve had in a while!” And I didn’t even need to get drunk or high off my ass to enjoy myself. Isn’t that a surprise.
“Oh, don’t start with that again,” the Queen of Hearts grumbled from a far corner of her mind. “I’m rather tired of that refrain.”
Yeah, yeah, sorry, Madeline thought back, shaking her head to dispel the negativity before it could take root. I know I’m doing a lot better these days. Been kind of a rough road to get here, sure, but – I’m out, I’m about, Mum and Dad trust me not to do anything stupid. That’s progress. She grinned back at the stage as the crowd began breaking up into smaller groups, friends chatting with friends. And that was a fucking great band! Why the hell they’re playing this place instead of living it up in Hollywood or – or Liverpool is beyond me.
“Liverpool?” the Queen asked, one eyebrow raised.
It was the first thing that came to mind! I don’t know the party towns of England! And asking Mum or Dad isn’t going to help, given the latter grew up in the ass end of nowhere and the former spent most of her life in a psychiatric hospital. Which you didn’t help with.
“Oh, shush and get us something to eat,” the Queen replied, rolling her eyes. “One gets peckish.”
Madeline’s stomach growled in answer. One does – might as well pick up a snack before we hit the road, she agreed, working her way toward the bar. If they serve food here, anyway...places like this always have peanuts or something, right? Eh, if they don’t, I’ll just swing past the nearest burger joint and –
Is that the bass guitarist?
Madeline stopped in her tracks. Perched on a stool at the very end of the bar was indeed The Pondcrossers’ second guitarist – Jean, if Madeline remembered correctly. Which she was pretty sure she did, as she’d spent a lot of the set watching Jean. The woman was exactly the type Madeline liked most – sporting wide hips, generous cleavage, long dark brown hair done up in a braid, and sparkling blue eyes. She’d handled her guitar like she’d been born with it in her hand, rocking in perfect beat with her bandmates and shooting the audience wide, come-hither grins every so often when the music allowed. Just the memory of that smile gave Madeline the shivers –
And now, she was almost within touching distance of the woman. Madeline stared at her, frozen. Holy shit, I didn’t realize...I mean, I guess it makes sense, singing like that is probably thirsty work, but...is it okay if I just – go up to her? I dunno if she’s cool with fans meeting her outside of sets or not...especially fans who might get a little...n-not that I’m gonna do anything but say I liked her music, but she is really fucking gorgeous and I’m on a dry spell and –
“And anyone who said your father’s influence in you is lacking should see you now.”
Cheshire appeared by her feet, winding around her ankles. “You seem stuck fast to the ground,” he observed with his trademark grin. “Purrhaps I should try to claw your feet up?”
“Loathe as I am to agree with that disrespectful creature, you should get moving,” the Queen of Hearts added, draping a tentacle over Madeline’s shoulders. “You are no mere pawn on the board – you are an ace in the pack. And you should act like it.”
Both of you be quiet before I start talking to you aloud! Madeline hissed, then bit her lip as she looked back at Jean. They did have a point – she was getting nowhere just standing there. In fact, she was probably starting to look a little bit creepy. And she did want to at least say “hi.” And tell her how awesome her band was. And if anything else happened...well, it happened. Madeline sucked in a steadying breath, then pried her feet off the floor and made her way over to the stool, trying to exude confidence. “Hi.”
Jean looked over. “Hi!” she said, all friendliness – that was one worry dispelled, at least. “Assuming you saw the show.”
“Yeah – you guys were amazing,” Madeline told her, smiling. “Best band I’ve heard in ages, trust me.” She offered a hand. “Madeline Van Dort.”
Jean took it, shooting her another dazzling smile. “Jean Carpenter. Pleasure to meet you.”
Madeline swallowed as their hands touched. Oh boy. Yup. Major crush. After one night. Gonna be hearing about this in Wonderland for months...worth it. “Pleasure is all mine.”

Note
( . doing this bc i wanna see their reactions tbh so APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE AND TW FOR S*ICIDE)
maddie successfully ended her life, leaving alice and victor childless.
The house feels -- smaller now.
That's really the only way for Victor to describe it. Their house, which was once so big and warm and full of life, is now small and cold and empty. The walls seem to be closing in, slowly but surely, and he's not sure how much longer he can take it.
He hasn't touched his piano since the incident. His music, something he thought would always be a part of him, feels like it was snuffed out along with Madeline, the moment he found her lying there. He has touched his sketchbook, but everything that comes out of his pen is jagged and raw now -- a testament to the anger and grief and pain that takes up the spot in his chest where his heart used to be. Why didn't you let us help you? he thinks as he scratches out another assortment of sharp lines. Why did you keep it all inside until -- why didn't I see you were hurting that badly in time? Why didn't I come home that little bit earlier?
A pair of arms go around him, and he looks up to see Alice behind him. Her green eyes are dull, and her hair lank -- personal hygiene has been a bit lacking lately, and he doesn't blame her. Frankly, he's just thrilled to see her up -- she's been spending a lot of time just sitting and staring into space, or lying down and staring at the ceiling. In Wonderland, he's sure, processing everything the best way she knows how.
(He's a tiny bit worried he's going to lose her to that place -- the spot that she and Madeline shared so closely. That he'll wake up one morning and find her gone, having wandered off in another daze. But he refuses to dwell on that because if he lost Alice too. . .)
She looks at his sketchbook, filled with the angry scribbles, then meets his gaze. No words are said -- none are needed, and none are adequate anyway. Instead, he just puts down his pen and gets up, turning around to pull her into his embrace. She nestles against him, ear against his chest as if she's checking to make sure his heart is still beating. That he isn't lost to her too.
(He'd be lying if he said he hadn't entertained the notion very very briefly, just after they'd confirmed at the hospital she was gone. But right afterward he thought about what that would do to Alice, and -- no. He can't lead his entire family into dying before their time.)
There's a long moment of silence as they just hold each other. Then, softly, Alice murmurs, "Lizzie had better be looking after her."
Victor swallows. "I'm -- I'm sure she is," he gets out after a moment, voice rough. "Your parents too."
Alice nods. "Good. Of course they would."
And then the silence is back, broken only by muffled sobs as she cries into his shirt and he closes his eyes against his own tears.

*snrrrk* I’m happy to be an inspiration! XD
Not Incorrect Quotes - Valicer and Maddie edition
because @thevalicemultiverse's continuous series makes me laugh and inspires me to write more of these, here are more situations I find these four in!
-
Maddie: [sitting on the kitchen counter, eating oreos with milk]
Smiler: [snags one, munching away]
Maddie: Hey! I bought these with my own money, they're mine!
Smiler: Come on, didn't we teach you to share, dear?
Maddie: Yes, but I was also taught that NO means NO.
Smiler: NOW HOLD ON A MINUTE-
-
Smiler: [making drinks for everyone]
Maddie: [already quite intoxicated] I'll take another one-!
Alice: Absolutely not-
Smiler: [pouring Maddie a shot of water] It's okay, Alice. I've got a special drink for her!
Maddie: [takes the shot, unknowingly] WOO that was strong! What liquor did you give me?
Smiler: It's a new science-based cocktail, dihydrogen monoxide!
Maddie: I'll take another one!
Victor: [leaning over to Alice, whispering] isn't that-
Alice: [whispering back] water? yes.
-
Maddie: [getting ready for the day, putting on makeup]
Smiler: [watching her] So what does that do?
Maddie: [holds up the eye primer] This goes under the makeup to make sure it stays on longer.
Smiler: Ohhh. And that?
Maddie: [holds up the eyeliner] This lines the eye and accentuates its shape to give a more dramatic look.
Smiler: [nods] What about this? [holds up a beauty blender] It feels like a marshmallow.
Maddie: Not food. It's a makeup sponge, it helps apply foundation.
Smiler: Ah. [sets it down, pauses] Can you do my makeup?
Maddie: [with stars in her eyes] I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK-
-
[some of maddie's friends are over, chilling in the living room]
Friend 1: Maddie, remember when you climbed the trellis of Jackson's house and snuck in his room?
Maddie: [laughs] Yeah, and then we TP'd his house
Friend 2: Weren't you high on acid when you did that-
Maddie: SHHHHH
Alice: [happened to walk by, looks at Maddie] Acid?
Maddie: [groans] Yeah. Acid.
Smiler: [also walks in] You've done acid?
Maddie: Multiple times.
Alice: I thought your days of drug use were over?
Maddie: They are, we're talking about something from my past.
Alice: Ah. So how does the story end?
Maddie: Well, acid makes hallucinations much worse, shockingly. I ended up running around in Jackson's yard screaming because the toilet paper looked like ghosts.
Alice: [trying not to laugh] Guess that means you won't be dropping acid again anytime soon, right?
Maddie: Exactly.

Just some belated #Flashback Friday, but also a redraw thing (like last time).
When was doing the recycling mini sketchbook (the same one that has my Madeline sketches in my other art blog) during my spring cleaning/refurnishing, I found an old sketch of Victor Van Dort (in about 2012, when I was attending community college).
Back in college, I guess I was being random on this sketch to make Victor VD “bisheon” because of the Glen-Keane-sort-of/Semi-realism vibe with iris pupils. I don’t know why I semi-bishie it than regular Burtony drawing that I was doing back then - I guess I was trying to use these similar vibe that I mentioned.
Luckily, after my drawing skills that had been “SCADIFIED,” (in SCAD, of course)... I decided to redraw it in another Flashback Friday thing. Good thing I drew the newer one on belated Friday night.
Enjoy.

Valicer Not-Incorrect Quotes, Back To Random Stuff With No Theme
Alice: [comes into the living room]
Smiler: [is lying facedown on the carpet]
Alice: ...watching the news again?
Smiler: [not moving, voice slightly muffled] I hate that keeping myself informed is antithetical to keeping myself happy.
--
[context: the trio are getting ready for a night out]
Alice: [sitting in front of a mirror, preparing to put on eyeliner]
Smiler: [sitting next to her, bright yellow eyeliner finished, applying a soft purple eye shadow]
Alice: [looks over at them, admiring their technique] You're much better at this than I am.
Smiler: Hey, I've had a lot more time to practice. No fun trips into "supervised hospitalization" for me.
Victor: [from over by the closet, encouragingly] I've always thought your makeup looked nice, Alice.
Alice: Thank you, but still. [fiddles with the eyeliner pencil] I wish that I could just pop it all onto my face with a thought like I do in Wonderland. That'd be so much easier.
Smiler: Yeah, tell me about it. [finishes up and looks over at her] But as we're not in Wonderland...want some help?
Alice: [hands them the eyeliner pencil] Yes please. Just no bright neon colors.
Smiler: [joking pout] You're no fun.
--
Smiler: [reading something on the couch]
Alice: [comes in, moves one of their arms, sits on their lap]
Smiler: [adjusts position to get a better look at their book]
Victor: [comes in, sees this, spots an opportunity for revenge, sits on Alice's lap]
Alice:
Smiler:
Smiler: ...I think we need to have the "you're sure you're not chronically underweight" conversation again.
Victor: [frustrated] This is just how Van Dorts are!
--
Smiler: [finishing up the eye shadow] There! What do you think?
Victor: [looks in the mirror, then away, blushing shyly] It's -- nice.
Alice: [encouragingly, sat next to him] I think you look very handsome.
Smiler: Yeah, that shade suits you! And remember, it doesn't make you any less of a boy.
Victor: [nods, waving a hand] I know, I know, just -- some things are hard to unlearn.
Alice: [kisses his cheek] We get it.
Smiler: [kisses his other cheek] One day at a time. [grins] Though what I'm really looking forward to is smudging that makeup later.
Victor: [blushes harder]
Alice: You get makeup all over the pillow cases, you're washing them.
Smiler: Fair trade.
--
Victor: [comes into the living room to find both Alice and Smiler lying facedown on the floor] Um...
Alice: [muffled] News.
Victor: Oh. [nods, gets down and joins them]

knock knock knock !!
maddie can barely hear the rapping on the door , given she's blaring her music as she applies her makeup . it's not until alice calls for her to answer the door that she realizes someone's there . groaning , she rushes downstairs and opens the door , and is greeted by a tall man dressed in a suit as well as a younger man , about madeline's age .
the shorter of the two sports a modern business fashion , half of his blueish hair covering an eyepatch while the rest is slicked back . the taller is dressed like he's attending a victorian ball , his suit almost competing with victor's normal attire . the three stare at each other for a moment before maddie finally breaks the silence , " can i help you ? "
she was expecting the taller one to speak first , and is surprised when the younger holds out his hand . " good afternoon , " he starts , his refined accent placing him from around london . boy he's sure far from home , she thinks before he continues . " my name is ciel phantomhive . i'm here to speak to alice liddell and victor van dort . is this their residence ? "
madeline laughs , glancing down at his hand in confusion . " uh , if by residence , you mean renting , then yeah . we're not interested in your religion or investing in your business , if that's what you're here for . "
the taller chuckles ; a devilish smile indeed . " oh no , my lady . we're just here to ask some questions . does the name angus bumby ring a bell ? "
chills roll down maddie's spine . who the hell are these guys ? " look , i don't know what kind of game you two are playing , but we're not interested . you can leave now . "
as she goes to shut the door , the elder man slips his foot through the crack , keeping her from closing them out . " sebastian michaelis , my lady . this is urgent , and we need to speak with your parents . "
maddie sighs , then opens the door , knowing she won't get rid of these two that easily . " fine . mom , dad ! these two weirdos are here to talk to you ! "

Merry Christmas Marie!
@liddellvxndort You asked me to surprise you, so here is a quick story based on the quick crack thread we did of Madeline and Alice going out thrifting after Madeline stole Alice’s tops one too many times. XD Hope you enjoy!
--
“We’re back!”
Victor looked up from his sketchpad as his wife and daughter entered the room, laden with bags. “Ah – welcome home,” he said, getting up to greet them with a kiss on the cheek each. “Did you get everything you wanted?”
“Near enough, I think,” Alice said, rooting around in the bag dangling from her wrist. “At the very least, Madeline should have enough stripey tops of her own now that she won’t have to keep stealing mine.”
“We’ll see,” Madeline said, smirking. “But yeah, I got just about everything I was looking for.” She offered Victor a bag to look in. “The thrift store was loaded today, let me tell you. Lot of people must have been clearing out their closets lately.”
“Well, that was good for you, anyway.” Victor pulled out a few items curiously. Black jeans. . .black t-shirt. . .black t-shirt with a band on it he wasn’t familiar with. . .black-and-white-striped t-shirt. . .black-and-white-striped sweater. . .black t-shirt with a Jack Skellington skull on it. . . “Very monochrome color palette, I must say.”
“I like black and white,” Maddie said, a touch defensively.
“I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that,” Victor assured her – ah, another black shirt with a band he’d never heard of on it. And two black-and-white-striped blouses in a row. And another pair of black jeans. “I was just an observation. You’re entitled to dress how you like.”
“Well, I did get some stuff with color,” Madeline said, pulling a purple top out of another bag. “And there’s a navy skirt in here somewhere. . .but yeah, I was kinda going for the gothic look this trip.”
“Fair enough. . .what about you?” Victor asked Alice, starting to fold up the shirts he’d pulled out and returning them to their bag.
“There’s a bit more color in my lot,” Alice said, taking another poke through her bags. “For example, I found a lovely red dress that I think I could give some new life to. With Victoria’s help, of course,” she added with a chuckle. “And there’s a couple of blue skirts and blouses, and a green top I thought matched my eyes. . .but yes, I did get plenty of black and white myself.” She shrugged. “What can I say – it’s easy to match, and I want to have plenty of spare tops for when our daughter inevitably spirits another one away.”
“The stripes are classic,” Madeline told her with a little grin. “Why I got so many myself.”
“I see.” Victor laughed softly. “Well, I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, really. After all, you got practically everything else from your mother – why not her fashion sense as well?”
Madeline raised an eyebrow. “Uh, Dad?”
“Yes?”
“How about you look down for a second?”
Puzzled, Victor did. “Uh. . .you’re going to have to give me another hint here, Maddie.”
“Just tell me – what color is your suit?”
“Well, it’s – ah. Right,” he said, blushing as he ran a hand over the black jacket and pants.
Madeline giggled. “Yeah – I know it’s tempting to blame Mum for all of this, but if my fashion sense is kinda monochrome? I’d call that a Van Dort thing.”

madeline can see the confusion on clarence's face as she tells him about her father's past adventure . still , she holds her ground and continues with her pleading look until he finally gives in . that is , in exchange for giving him the whole story of victor visiting the land of the dead . " that's fair , " she admits , dropping the puppy-dog look .
she realizes she hasn't properly introduced herself , and , well . . . " apologies . i was a little too caught up in fear to give my name , " she chuckles . " my name is madeline . though , my friends and family call me maddie . "
now , onto business . " my father grew up in burtonsville , born into the van dort family . and before you ask , yes , those van dorts that run the cannery .
" he and my godmother , victoria everglot , had been seeing each other for quite a while and were getting ready to marry ; however , my father is a nervous wreck most of the time , and had trouble reciting his vows during the rehearsal .
" he decided the best way to remedy this was to run into the woods and recite his vows to the trees , and , well . . . he ended up resurrecting a dead bride . "
don't worry , clarence , this is just the beginning !
Clarence nods as she explains why she ran -- okay, yes, he will give her that, having a corpse just APPEAR like he did in front of her would frighten even the most stout-hearted, he's sure. Hell, it would have frightened him while he was alive, and he knew the afterlife existed already through all his magical research! Though it is still weird to him that she's recovered so quickly...
And then she continues on, and -- hang on, her father once accidentally married a dead bride? And went down to the Land of the Dead with her?! How the hell did THAT situation come about? Clarence is reasonably certain living people cannot marry dead ones... And now she's asking to see family downstairs and giving him -- some very convincing puppy dog eyes, he will admit that. Still, she's said a LOT of confusing things in the last minute or so... "If you're willing to explain more about what happened with your father, I'll take you Downstairs with me," Clarence decides, because that seems like a fair trade. "Because I have so many questions."
And then something important occurs to him. "Actually, wait, let's start with an easy one -- what's your name? You never actually said."

Happy Birthday Marie!
@liddellvxndort As per your request, here is a short, maybe slightly angsty fic about Alice catching Madeline after she comes home from sneaking out to a party. Nothing major, just some light family drama. Hope you enjoy!
---
“And where exactly do you think you’re going, young lady?”
Madeline froze, one foot raised mid-creep, looking in the darkness like a gazelle trying to avoid the notice of a lion. Or, perhaps more accurately, like a gazelle who’s realized the lion has seen it and is desperately trying to blend into the background a few minutes too late. “. . .bed?” she said slowly, a slight, panicked squeak in her voice.
“You mean the bed you were supposed to be in in the first place?” Alice responded, clicking on the light so she could actually see her daughter properly. Madeline blinked rapidly, shaking her head. “Given that, you know, it’s two-thirty in the morning?”
Maddie winced, straightening up from the Standard-Guilty-Child-Sneaking-In crouch. “Yeah. Um – I – I can explain.”
Alice leaned against the wall, arms folded. “I’m listening.”
“. . .the explanation is the pretty shit ‘Caroline was having a big party and I didn’t think you’d let me go, so I snuck out.’”
“Right.” Alice sighed. “I suppose a shit explanation is still an explanation, but – Madeline, you know how we feel about you just – disappearing like this.”
“I know,” Madeline mumbled, staring at her shoes. “I just – I really wanted to go, but I was pretty sure you were gonna say no because it’s a school night. And even if you didn’t, I didn’t want to go through the whole ‘who’s going to be there, how long is it gonna be, are there gonna be any drugs or booze’ thing.”
“We’re your parents,” Alice pointed out, frowning. “I think we’re in our bounds to know at least roughly who you’re going to be with, doing what for how long.”
“Yeah, fine, but – you always sound so–” Madeline waved a hand in the air, as if trying to draw out the right words. “I don’t wanna say ‘accusing,’ but – more worried than I think you should be, maybe. Like – you’re always expecting something to go wrong, even if it’s just a couple of us hanging out at the park or something! I know you and Dad aren’t really ‘party people’ – or ‘people people,’ even – but I shouldn’t have to feel like going out with my friends is something I should be ashamed of, or guilty over, or whatever, right?”
“No, you shouldn’t,” Alice allowed, standing up straight. “And I am sorry if I’ve given you that impression. We just – yes, we worry. We’ve both had some terrible things happen in our lives thanks to people we thought we could trust, and – perhaps that bleeds over a bit more than it should when we ask you about your various gatherings.” She let out another, heavier sigh. “But that doesn’t mean you should just go sneaking around behind our backs to see your friends either. That’s only going to add to our worries. And you don’t know that we would have said no.” She raised a suspicious eyebrow. “Or do you?”
Madeline huffed. “No – the worst that was there was a few joints and some hard seltzer. Caroline’s actually pretty straight-laced, compared to some other people I know.”
“All right, good.” Alice rubbed her forehead. “I know it’s a school night, but if you’d led with that earlier, I probably would have let you visit for a couple of hours, with the caveat of ‘don’t drive if you overindulge on that seltzer.’ As it is – you’re not going anywhere except school for the next couple of weeks.”
Madeline winced. “Right. I’m sorry. I’ll – I’ll tell you about the next one.”
“Thank you.” Alice went over and patted her back. “Now then, let’s get you upstairs. Not only because you do have school tomorrow, but because you get to explain all this to your father too over breakfast.”
Maddie grimaced. “Crap – can’t you tell him?”
“I could, but – honestly?” Alice gave her a little push forward, biting back a small smile. “I think the most effective deterrent against this happening again is making you suffer through his disappointed face.”

“I’m pregnant...”
“You’re. . .what?” Sorry, Madeline, but it’s going to take Victor a moment to process this. Alice too, considering all the blinking.

Merry Christmas, LiddellVxnDort: Post-Family Gatherings
@liddellvxndort -- Well, naturally, I’ve got to do something with your Madeline for the holidays, don’t I? Though this is inspired by a conversation we actually had around Thanksgiving, involving Maddie and Nell getting into an awful row about her life choices during a holiday dinner. The idea stayed with me, and I thought, “What would the aftermath look like?” And so the below was born -- hope you like!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So." Victor folded his hands in his lap as he looked at his daughter, slouched on her bed. "I think things got a little out of hand tonight. Wouldn't you agree?"
Madeline scowled back at him, lips set in a thin line. "If by 'out of hand' you mean 'my grandmother kept insulting me and I decided to fight back.'"
"Pretty much, yes." Victor sighed as Madeline blinked at him, clearly thrown by his answer. "Look, none of us came off well in tonight's – fiasco of a supper. You're not off the hook for what you said, but they're not off the hook for what they said, either. They're not coming over again for a good long time after this." He fiddled with his fingers. "I just. . .I want to talk about what happened. How you're – you're feeling."
"How do you think I'm feeling?" Madeline replied, shaking her head. "My own grandparents – you'd think I'd be used to it, but I'm not! I can't understand why they act the way they do! Why they keep insisting I be someone I'm not!" She raked her fingers through her hair. "I know you and Mum don't always approve of my life choices, but at least you support me. At least you make an effort to understand! Grandma and Grandpa – the only good thing I can say about them right now is that they didn't make a fuss about me wanting to date girls. And that's only because Grandma knows some rich important lady with a gay niece and thus could still try to set me up! They only care what's going on with me if they can spin it to benefit them in some way!" She turned to him suddenly, eyes wet. "How the hell did you deal with that growing up, Dad? How the hell do you deal with it now?"
"Not well," Victor confessed, dropping his gaze to his shoes. "G-growing up, I didn't really know any better. I just – accepted it as how our family worked. And these days. . .well, there's a reason we see them infrequently. As tonight proved, there's only so much any of us can take." He pressed his fingers against his forehead. "Some of your comments tonight were out of line – but I can understand why you said them. It's not like she was holding back either. . .I'm sorry you had to go through that tonight," he added, his other hand tightening on his trouser leg. "Especially. . ." He looked away, huffing. "Every time I think they're done with the supposedly-subtle little comments on my choice of wife. . ."
"Dad, I hate to say it, but I don't think they're ever gonna be done with that." Now it was Madeline's turn to sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I'm sorry for the swearing. For winding her up more. I wish I could grit my teeth and just force my way through it, like you, but. . ." She flopped backward against the pillows with a groan. "You know I'm Mum's daughter."
"I do. Which is why you're getting off with no more than being grounded the rest of the weekend," Victor said, patting her knee. "I do want you to stand up for yourself, Maddie. Certainly more than I did growing up. You just – need to know the limits."
"Limits suck."
"Yes, but still." Victor leaned over her. "And please remember, if nothing else – whatever your grandparents think or feel about you? Your mother and I love you very much. We don't care what or who are you, as long as you're happy."
That got a smile. "Thanks, Dad. I love you too." She levered herself up. "The whole weekend, though?"
"It's not really a proper punishment if it's just one day," Victor replied, unable to help a small smile.
"Ugh. You guys are the worst," Madeline grumbled. "I'm gonna replace you both with a couple of brooms wearing a jacket and an apron."
Victor snorted. "Go ahead – my parents would probably prefer a broom for a son." And then, at Madeline's stricken look, ". . .oh dear, I made it sad again, didn't I?"

Alice has never really thought of Madeline as "her father's daughter." Obviously, Victor adores her, and Madeline adores him right back, that has never been in question. But Madeline has always taken very strongly after her, from looks to taste in clothing to her ability to enter Wonderland. She's so strongly a Liddell, Alice thought that the only thing Van Dort about her was her last name.
And then Madeline is staring at the young lady she just ran into, barely stammering her way through a handful of words, and that right there is the Van Dort coming out. Which, is very, very interesting. Alice quickly makes her excuses to the increasingly-confused woman and gets Madeline away, steering her around a corner away from prying eyes. "Are you all right?" she asks Maddie once they're alone. "You seem a bit -- distracted."
it's a normal day and alice has asked her daughter to go for a little walk around the town . putting on a more " decent " dress , as her grandmother would say , madeline quickly rushes down the stairs to meet her mother . " alright , i'm ready ! " she reassures , knowing alice has been waiting for quite a while .
they head outdoors , making their way through town . the two spend this time speaking about whatever comes to mind , usually about wonderland . it's not until madeline clumsily runs into another woman on the pavement that she quickly apologizes , and suddenly . . .
she's lost for words . the woman before her smiles politely , accepting her apology and telling her there's " no worries . " she makes another comment about how she wasn't watching where she was going , and needs to get her nose out of her book , anyways .
maddie continues to stare at the woman , stammering a bit before her mother whisks her away from an awkward conversation .

Merry Christmas Marie!
@liddellvxndort As per your request, have a largely-fluffy scene of modern!Alice having a bonding moment with her new baby, your OC Valice daughter Madeline! :) Hope you enjoy!
---
“Well, hello there, little one. How are you?”
Madeline blinked up at her, little nose slightly wrinkled. “I imagine you’re at least feeling bettesr than you were earlier,” Alice continued, bouncing her newborn gently in her arms. “I know I am. Quite a mess coming out of there, wasn’t it? But you’re all clean and warm now.” She smiled at the little knit hat atop Madeline’s head. “And fashionable. You’ve got hats waiting for you at home too, you know, from a certain Mrs. Victoria White. And a nice big blanket too.”
Madeline yawned at that, tiny mouth stretching wider than she’d thought was possible. “Yes, I know – all that excitement was rather exhausting,” Alice agreed with a nod. “I’m pretty tired myself. But we’ve both got to stay awake until we’ve eaten. One of the nurses said she’d be back in a little bit to show me how best to feed you – and your father’s eventually going to return from his adventure to find the cafeteria with cake for me. Well – for us. I hope.” She frowned thoughtfully. “I wonder if he even remembers today is his birthday too anymore. You’ve rather thrown our plans into disarray.”
Madeline yawned again, then managed to work a fist free of her blanket, waving it about. “Right, right – ‘your plans?’” Alice filled in, chuckling. “‘What about my plans? Do you think I wanted to get shoved out of a nice warm belly through an absurdly tiny opening into this big, bright, noisy, smelly world?’” She shook her head. “Well, I can tell you – there’s a reason there’s so many platitudes about plans going wrong. And yes, the world is bright, and noisy, and smelly a lot of the time. But I think there’s more than a few things to recommend it too.”
Madeline squirmed, kicking at her blanket. “What, you don’t believe me? All right, I’ll provide a few examples,” Alice said, adjusting her grip. “Cake’s one – that’ll be nice, once you get old enough to eat it. And there’s butterflies too – little winged insects that come in all sorts of beautiful colors. Your father loves them – he’ll teach you all about them. And about music too – do you remember Victor playing the piano for you while you were still in there? I hope you do. I spent a lot of time next to him on the bench, listening to him play with a hand on my belly, feeling you kick to the tune.” She laughed again, softly. “You always seemed to want to dance. . .perhaps you’ll like to draw too. Art’s another nice thing, in my opinion. And books too, of course – with and without pictures, though I won’t blame you if it takes you a while to warm up to the latter. And. . .” She smiled, blinking back the tears. “And then there’s you. You right now are the nicest thing in the world. I – I didn’t think I’d ever have you, after I got out of Rutledge. I couldn’t even imagine having Victor. Who would want to waste their time on a broken girl who’d spent so much time in supervised hospitalization? But then he showed up one day in Houndsditch, and despite everything in the world trying to tear us apart, he stayed by my side. And then we came here, to New York, to make a better life for ourselves. . .and finally, we decided we might as well try for a family. And now – here you are.” She sniffled. “My little Madeline Elizabeth Van Dort.”
Madeline waved her fist again, little fingers flexing. “Hah – yes, hooray,” Alice agreed, giving her another bounce. “It’s going to be a hell of a transition for me, you know. Trying to be a mother. But I’ll do my best, I promise. I’m going to give you the life I had up until I was eight-and-a-half. And then, hopefully, the life I should have had beyond that.” She leaned down and kissed Madeline’s forehead. “I love you.”
Madeline made a “gah” noise, reaching for her face. “I’ll take that as ‘I love you to’ – ow!” Alice jerked her head away, then winced. “Or maybe not. . .I’m very sorry, but I’m going to have to insist you let go of my hair.”
