i.
kissing you still feels like missing you, which is to say that you can kiss me all you want again but you will never hold me the same way you did a year ago. apparently, this is a dealbreaker for me.
ii.
mary asks what heartbreak looks like for me. she is a writer and has never learnt to hold her tongue. i say that mostly it was forgetting i loved to dance. mostly it was the way the cereal box took twice as long to finish alone but i keep buying the multipack anyway. i say, mary, it doesn't matter what heartbreak looks like. but heartbreak has made me look like a fraud.
iii.
i think it is a wednesday when you call but i lose track of dates like losing sleep. it's the same story: you want to try again, and then you don't, and then you do, and i am back to tending wounds that don't heal.
iv.
last night, i left the house and i laughed with some friends and i drank my weight at the pub to throw it up and i loved every moment of it. they don't let me think about you. today, it has been five months since i've seen you. today, there's a crack of sunlight on an overcast day.
v.
kissing you still feels like missing you, and i am getting very good at both. we are cupid's favourite version of groundhog day but i still think there's going to be a different ending every time. if you come back again, i will do things differently. if you love me again, i will try better - not harder, i have always tried the hardest i could. i want kissing you to just feel like kissing you again. i feel your absence in every touch.
- falling apart in five parts, j.l.

The big divulge: deconstructing the stumble dress
Its underwear as outerwear, a flimsy thing that blurs the boundaries between public and private, grungy and sexy. And its back
Fashion may be quixotic, but there are some things you dont argue with: Mrs Pradas genius, Karls Edwardian collar preference and the stone cold rightness of Nova magazine. In a prescient editorial printed in January 1969 with the headline, What are you trying to hide? the mag declared that the only response to worrying that your underwear would be visible beneath your clothes was to turn a wardrobe vice into a virtue. Show that you mean it, it declared. Dont count on your underclothes not showing, choose them so if they do, it doesnt matter. Accompanied by a model shot and clothes credited to Woolworths an arch styling move if ever there were one it documented a pivotal moment in the fashion history of underwear as outerwear.
Forty-five years later and the concept of the blurred line between public and private fashion what ought to be concealed or revealed is still being played out on the catwalk. For spring 2016, the debate began in September at the Givenchy show a visiting dignitary at New York fashion week for one season only where designer Riccardo Tisci riffed on a slip dress theme with chemises, wispy lace and silk slips. At Calvin Klein, creamy ankle-length slip dresses with misbehaving slovenly-cum-sexy straps were worn with minimal trainers and recalled the 90s. It was an echo of the brands heyday, a moment of nostalgia for those whose love affair with fashion began when a doe-like Kate Moss defined the brand. In London, Burberry continued the theme, showing silky flowing slip dresses with utilitarian rucksacks and contrasting chunky sandals. Was Christopher Bailey submitting to his inner grunge rocker?

Courtney Love in 1994. Photograph: Tony Mottram/Getty
As you might expect, the underwear-on-display look was especially prominent in Paris, spiritual home of the cinq sept. Alexander Wangs swan song at Balenciaga was filled with tryst-worthy clothes, all white silk nighties and hotel slippers, a romanticised room-service look. At Cline the trend crystalised. Phoebe Philo isnt known for pushing overt sexiness, and her lace-trimmed slips with intentional creasing werent presented that way. But in the hands (sorry, on the boobs) of a woman with curves as evidenced by Dakota Johnson on the cover of Vogue their sensuality is hard to ignore.
But it was Hedi Slimane who really spelt it out, with a Saint Laurent finale celebrating grunge. Slip dresses with Courtney Love-worthy tiaras and explicitly bare backs that felt more backstage pass than boudoir summed up the allure: despite its flimsy fabric, a slip dress can multitask, representing both sex and rebellion at the same time.
A quick skirt through the history of the slip dress backs up this theory. Fans of the style include, in no particular order: Kate Moss, Michelle Pfeiffers Elvira Hancock in Scarface (come on, in fashion terms she is real), Elizabeth Taylor, Rihanna, Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Courtney Love, Veronica Lake and Princess Diana. Women who share, if not a style, then a kind of sartorial irreverence.
Cline S/S 16. Photograph: WWD/Rex/Shutterstock
In its basic form the slip dress, with its spaghetti straps, silky fabric and often lacy trim, mirrors underwear, but also wants to be seen. Undressed: A Brief History Of Underwear, an exhibition opening in April at Londons V&A, examines the relationship between underwear and fashion. Its curator, Edwina Ehrman, sums up the wearing of underwear as outerwear as a way of challenging contemporary morality. It represents the difference between what should be public and what should be hidden, and the breaking down of those barriers.
Princess Diana in Dior at the 1996 Met Ball. Photograph: New York Daily News via Getty
As far back as the late 18th century, fashion leaders such as the Duchess of Devonshire and Marie Antoinette were wearing fine muslin dresses with a sash around the waist. Not so shocking now, but to their contemporaries it would have looked as if they were wearing their underwear. Ehrman claims that the classic Jane Austen-style dresses of the early 1800s were an even earlier example of this. To underline her point, the curator has chosen to exhibit a Pride And Prejudice-type dress next to her own favourite underwear as outerwear dress: a John Galliano for Dior navy lace-trimmed slip, cut on the bias and owing much to the 1930s slip dress trend. A newly single Princess Diana wore it to the Met Ball in 1996 just a few months after her divorce. Bet she was feeling sexy and rebellious that night.
For Bay Garnett, contributing fashion editor at Vogue and slip dress styling aficionado, it all depends on context. You can have such different perceptions of the slip dress in a tacky situation it looks terrible, but it can look incredible, too. Either East Hampton or totally grunge. To me the appeal is to deconstruct the sexiness, to subvert it. The genius of Courtney Love in a slip dress was that she turned an essentially conservative and conventional item on its head. Its the ultimate punk thing to lampoon something so commercial.
Givenchy S/S 16. Photograph: Rex/Shutterstock
Kate Moss in Liza Bruce in 1993. Photograph: Richard Young/Rex/Shutterstock
Like many, the slip dress that most resonates with me belonged to Kate Moss in 1993. Wearing a transparent silver slip by Liza Bruce to a model agency party, Moss accessorised with an almost empty beer bottle and a Marlboro Light. The dress hides nothing and highlights what look like knickers from a multipack of pants. What is shocking is not that you can see the moles on her breasts but just how nonchalant she is about the whole thing. Its a display of pure casual rebellion. Ehrman, who has included the original Bruce dress in the exhibition, agrees that the moment was so natural, like shes just pulled it on.
In todays post-Kimoji age, where catwalks are live-streamed on Grindr and naked penises swing on the runway, the idea that underwear as outerwear might shock seems almost quaint. So what is the appeal of the slip dress now? Overt sexiness is not the prevailing mood in fashion, but we are enjoying yet another 90s revival. From Christopher Kane and Vetements grown-up grunge to the minimalism of brands such as the Row and Joseph, the style imprint of that decade is hard to ignore. The slip dress is mercurial in this context it can be a grunge-worthy charity shop find, sleek and minimal, or sexy, depending on your shoes and hair.
Add in a trim of lace, known among high-end fashion buyers as retail gold, and the slip dress represents the perfect fashion storm. It pushes style boundaries and cash registers in a louche, dishevelled way. It speaks of punk and grunge and sex but all in the most casual fashion.

“Because I thought he just had a bad personality, not that he was straight-up evil,” Alice sighs, glaring at the spot where the spectacles had rested before her daughter had scooped them up. “Not to mention I was repressing -- a lot. That was the whole point of the second trip through Wonderland, in fact -- getting me to slowly but surely face what I’d forgotten and buried so I could finally bring that monster to justice.”
She brushes some hair out of her face, then takes her own look around the domain -- at the broken dollhouses reaching toward the sky, the bits of dolls strewn all over the ground, the quilted platforms and chalkboard slides providing a path through it all. She worries her lower lip. “What worries me now is why I’m back here -- why we’re back here. I thought I could leave this awful place behind once the Dollmaker bought it. The Insane Children were supposed to go back to the Skool, and you -- well. I trust you understand why I never wanted you to have to visit.”
those memories... oh god those memories...
madeline opens her eyes, finding herself deep within the dollhouses. she's just coming back from finding one of her mother's memories, a simple pair of silver glasses floating just above the ground. maddie remembers her mother telling her what memory is for and who it is from, so she quickly recognized the spectacles.
this memory was from him.
the further they travel into the godforsaken domain, the more memories of his pop up. they all disgust maddie, leaving a terrible taste in her mouth as soon as she's free from their grasps.
" god, i still can't believe you lived with that man for a year. how on earth did you not kill him sooner?? " madeline asks, her face scrunched up in disdain.

🎵 . for alice to sing to/with maddie uwu
"I'm not particularly musical, but I will do my best to carry a tune for you," Alice tells Madeline with a smile. "Did you have a song in mind, or did you want me to pick?"

Smile -- Please?
@liddellvxndort
If there is one thing Smiler dislikes, it’s unhappiness. Especially when that unhappiness is infecting their loved ones. And double especially when the source of that unhappiness is some horrible dickhead who doesn’t comprehend that you don’t fucking assault people at parties, no matter how fucked up they might be.
So, as you might imagine, things being what they are, they’re a bit -- tense right now. The whole family is, honestly -- the atmosphere of the entire house has changed, post-incident. It feels sadder and angrier and just -- not right. Someone’s got to do something about it --
And Smiler intends to be that someone. Oh yes, they know that Alice and Victor have reached out to Madeline as well, tried to help, but their own baggage with this kind of thing complicates matters, unfortunately. They’re doing their best, they know that, but -- a different perspective may be what’s needed. Besides, they -- they just miss Maddie, really. She’s pulled away since the incident, and even though Smiler understands WHY, it still hurts. So they’re going to make an effort to cross the distance.
Which is how they got to her bedroom door, rapping gently on it. “Madeline? You in?”

Jean glances over her shoulder with a grin as she feels fingers in her hair again. "Hey there, Maddie. Decided to comb it out for me again?"

((Continuation of "maddie did you ever"))
@offwithhxrhead continued from here:
madeline stands her ground , eyes narrowing . " is it ludicrous ? or are you afraid to admit that you're just like them ? " she dares to ask , venom dripping off each syllable . " i'm not going to get into some horrific accident ! " she shouts , hands flying into the air . " you have to stop sheltering me like i'm going to die tomorrow ! i'm not them ! when are you going to look at me like i'm your daughter and not your dead family ?! " she stops for a second , gathering herself before continuing in a softer tone . " i'm not a child anymore . i'm nearly eighteen , mum , when are you going to see that ? "
"How dare you," Alice growls, hands bunching into fists by her side. "I am not doing anything more than trying to keep you safe, and--"
And that gets cut off by Madeline's shouting, making her jerk back slightly as her daughter goes on about how she's "not them," before transitioning into how she's not a child anymore and when is Alice going to see that. "It's not about the damn fire!" she snaps once Madeline is done. "Or not in the way you seem to think -- of course I see my daughter instead of my dead family. I just do not want my daughter to join my dead family! And I have SEEN the way you walk in when you're high or drunk or both -- or, rather stumble in! You are NOT as good at operating a car like that as you might think! I do NOT want that phone call -- or a phone call saying you've killed someone ELSE and put their family through what I went through!"
She takes a deep breath and continues. "I understand you're not a child anymore. I just -- I worry about what you're doing and why you're doing it."

((Because it literally won't let me properly reblog the ask chain now. . .))
@offwithhxrhead, continued from here:
maddie gives a small chuckle in response . " of course i know that , how many times have i slept in your bed because of nightmares , again ? " the smile on her face drops as alice describes just a little about the dream . " christ , still ? you'd think after thirty-something years your mind would give the fire thing a rest . . . " well , since we're up , do you want to eat some oreos with me ? have a lil snacky-snack before we go back to bed ? "
Alice chuckles too at that. "All right, I'll have to give you that one. We're an unfortunately nightmare-prone family, aren't we?"
"You would, but no," Alice sighs, letting her head thunk against the table briefly. "I mean, yes, fine, that damned house fire was the definitive event of my life, but do I have to see EVERYONE I have ever cared about claimed by the flames in my sleep? It's bad enough when it's just the memories. . ."
She looks up as Madeline offers Oreos. "I think I would like that, yes," she says, sitting back up straight. "Something to -- distract me for a little while."

"I'm aware," Alice groans, with her head on the dining table. "But it's just not happening tonight." She glances at the clock. "Or to-morning, perhaps -- 4 AM's close enough, right?"

( . doing this bc i wanna see their reactions tbh so APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE AND TW FOR S*ICIDE)
maddie successfully ended her life, leaving alice and victor childless.
The house feels -- smaller now.
That's really the only way for Victor to describe it. Their house, which was once so big and warm and full of life, is now small and cold and empty. The walls seem to be closing in, slowly but surely, and he's not sure how much longer he can take it.
He hasn't touched his piano since the incident. His music, something he thought would always be a part of him, feels like it was snuffed out along with Madeline, the moment he found her lying there. He has touched his sketchbook, but everything that comes out of his pen is jagged and raw now -- a testament to the anger and grief and pain that takes up the spot in his chest where his heart used to be. Why didn't you let us help you? he thinks as he scratches out another assortment of sharp lines. Why did you keep it all inside until -- why didn't I see you were hurting that badly in time? Why didn't I come home that little bit earlier?
A pair of arms go around him, and he looks up to see Alice behind him. Her green eyes are dull, and her hair lank -- personal hygiene has been a bit lacking lately, and he doesn't blame her. Frankly, he's just thrilled to see her up -- she's been spending a lot of time just sitting and staring into space, or lying down and staring at the ceiling. In Wonderland, he's sure, processing everything the best way she knows how.
(He's a tiny bit worried he's going to lose her to that place -- the spot that she and Madeline shared so closely. That he'll wake up one morning and find her gone, having wandered off in another daze. But he refuses to dwell on that because if he lost Alice too. . .)
She looks at his sketchbook, filled with the angry scribbles, then meets his gaze. No words are said -- none are needed, and none are adequate anyway. Instead, he just puts down his pen and gets up, turning around to pull her into his embrace. She nestles against him, ear against his chest as if she's checking to make sure his heart is still beating. That he isn't lost to her too.
(He'd be lying if he said he hadn't entertained the notion very very briefly, just after they'd confirmed at the hospital she was gone. But right afterward he thought about what that would do to Alice, and -- no. He can't lead his entire family into dying before their time.)
There's a long moment of silence as they just hold each other. Then, softly, Alice murmurs, "Lizzie had better be looking after her."
Victor swallows. "I'm -- I'm sure she is," he gets out after a moment, voice rough. "Your parents too."
Alice nods. "Good. Of course they would."
And then the silence is back, broken only by muffled sobs as she cries into his shirt and he closes his eyes against his own tears.

“did you know i felt this way about you?” ( . adelaide to alice !! hoping to do her confessing her love for alice shortly after her and victor's first dance in houndsditch lol )
"Not at all," Alice says softly, anxiously rocking on her heels. "I -- I hadn't the slightest clue." And now that she does know, she has no idea how to respond. Feelings -- feelings are not her forte these days.
