Madeinheights. One of my favorite bands of all time, and very little known by anyone except a few people who I'm grateful to share this obsession with. Here's to finding more.

Madeinheights was an impressive pop duo that, personally for me, has made some of the best pop of the last decade this side of Charli XCX. Their contemporaries were artists like Purity Ring and Phantogram, the coveted "female singer/male producer electronic duo" which was kind of a "thing" then and continues to be a thing with duos like Terror Jr (who I also love) and Kllo. But this is about Madeinheights so let's continue.

(edit: how could I have forgotten about Sonnymoon, who might have created this sound. Anyway..)

Kelsey Bulkin is an amazing vocalist. Her voice is firmly rooted in R&B, but has an airy quality to it that makes it work in electronic pop. They have songs in droves. The melodies melt like butter in your mind. The songwriting has a lot of surprises in it. Oh, you want a Sufjan Stevens cover? You got it ("Holla Mears"). They reappropriated the skating rink jam "My Boo" for "Ghosts" and it's amazing. That backtracking that they did to start "Murakami" was brilliant. Namedropping Billie Holiday and Kurt Vonnegut in the same sentence was also brilliant. I can go on and on, their music is like a huge collection of amazing moments.

I don't know why they broke up or why their music vanished off all DSPs. Kelsey's still doing solo stuff so that's cool, but I wanted to see her and Sabzi do something live for the culture. I missed out man.

Anyway, anyone else love this band still? Lol.

This week’s recommendation is the 2015 album from Made In Heights called “Without My Enemy What Would I Do” This album is a brilliant mix of pop, electronica, and synthwave. It flows in a way that just takes you on a journey. Kelsey Bulkin’s vocals are beautiful and dreamy throughout most of the record and they just wash over you. My favorite song off the record and the one I’m using for the playlist is the single “Murakami.” At 2 minutes and 28 seconds it has one of my favorite instrumental breakdowns ever. Go listen to this album immediately. You’ll thank me for it.
