Taeyeon was born in Seoul, South Korea and lived there until age 5, when her mother passed away from cardiac arrest, moving away to America (more specifically, Los Angeles) with her father, who was a neurologist, and her younger brother

- itzy; so other than everglow it was hard for us to make a decision on this, neither of us STAN STAN many girl groups so most girl group debuts slip our minds after watching them but dalla dalla had been stuck in both of our heads for months now so that’s why we ended up choose itzy (also jyp girl group duh)

8. Favorite Disbanded Group:

- speed; okay so most people don’t know them and i am: depressed about it but it’s okay, they’re my boys and i love them, one of the members is actually zico’s older brother so oof yes talented family, they’re great and i miss them so much :(((

- history; so roughly towards the end of 2016 i saw their video just might die and queen, nana had already played me queen before and i really enjoyed the song (bop listen to it plz) and i just loved them from then on, after they announced their disbandment last year ngl it hurt cause i love them

- yugyeom. that’s it. yugyeom is the loml and there’s nothing he does where i won’t love him, focus on me hit somewhere different and i LOVE IT and HIM and of course jaebum cause he’s great too uwu i also love both of jjp and i was so exited for tomorrow, today so that helped too^^

- infinite; so infinite. yeah i’m a HUGE inspirit and i miss hoya, sunggyu, and sungyeol like hell but it’s okay, i adore infinite im not gonna lie (to be fair i adore a lot of groups) and they mean a lot to me, out of my ults i think myungsoo has consistently stayed at the same place since 2016 as my second ultimate bias oof wow, it was also hard to choose between infinite, suju, and shinee like damn

- super junior; so i love suju? i love them more after once again thanks to nana’s persistence after black suit came out even though i was gonna listen to it away, i already loved heechul and leeteuk but dang i really love them and so does nana. but she likes too many groups to just choose one without overthinking it ALOT

- come back again by infinite; okay so this was also a really hard one cause i love nct’s debut as well as ateez and astro but i ended up choosing come back again cause i find my self searching far and wide just to listen to this song (cause it’s not on apple music or spotify)

- pirate king by ateez; so yes i know that their debut was TECHNICALLY treasure but i love pirate king too much to not say it was my favorite debut, this song is still on constant repeat and always will be like uGH

- jeong sewoon; so im a big ol mush pile for all of the produce 101 s2 boys so of course sewoon would be up there with jinyoung, donghan, and SO MANY OTHER GREAT MEN, i adore his voice and the way he sings, he’s just so? great??

- dean; dean was the first kpop artist i ever listened to even without knowing he was a k-r&b artist, i love his voice, it’s so soothing and i can never stop listening to it

- chungha; coincidently snapping came out the day before i started writing this so yes?? queen?? but seriously i love her so much and i can’t ever contain my love for her music

- IU; she so ADORABLE? i love all of her music and i can’t believe she’s an actual human being, i seriously love her so much that it’s just uncontainable, she has one of the best voices in the kpop industry

15. Favorite Male Vocalist:

- baekhyun of exo; exo was my first group i ever got into, and they never cease to amaze me when it comes to their music. they never and i mean NEVER disappoint with their albums and bsides, as to why i chose baekhyun is simple, HIS VOICE SENDS CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE i mean so does jongdae but still

- kyungsoo of exo; i love kyungsoo and his voice and i’m going to miss him beyond belief after he leaves on july 1st :(( but seriously his voice knows no bounds and i can’t help but melt when i hear it

- seola of wjsn; so i’m just saying now i don’t know much about wjsn but this girl. her vocals. yes? after her song with kihyun came out i fell in love with her vocals from then

- sunmi; i love my supportive queen, she’s great and beautiful and i love all of her music, i will never fail to bop to heroine at any time of day just because i love her that much like yes queen

17. Favorite Male Dancer:

- ten of nct; i don’t think much needs to be said as to why ten is my favorite male dancer. he is beyond anything i’ve ever seen before and has my complete respect for his passion for dancing and it makes me want to be a better dancer just so i can be proud of myself

- yugyeom of got7; oH i WonDer WhY yUgyEoM iS heRE, seriously i love his dancing more than anything and all of his freestyle clips on instragram make me have the utmost love for him beyond what i already have for him

18. Favorite Female Dancer:

- seulgi of red velvet; i’ve watched her dancing over the years and i’m never not mesmerized by her stage presence and the way she is so detailed with how she moves

- lisa of blackpink; she’s a great dancer and i will never deny that, she’s also a great rapper and her stage presence is great especially when she’s dancing (specifically taki taki)

19. Favorite Male Rapper:

- changbin of stray kids; okay so i knew from the moment i heard hellevator that this group would be big and man did they not disappoint, changbin has one of the best rapping styles and voices i’ve ever heard in my life, his speed and his lyrics are so amazing and 3racha songs are AMAZING too like wow this man and his power over me

- jooheon of monsta x; not only has joohoney wreaked my bias list but he has absolutely one of the most unique voices i’ve ever heard, his raps are so hard hitting and i can’t ever get over them, his solo work has potential to be soty because of how talented he is

20. Favorite Female Rapper:

- jessi; okay so i actually had a few female rappers in mind by it kept going back to jessi each time, i genuinely love her voice and i LIVE for her roasts like yes, also i love all of her music? like she has great music i 10/10 recommend

- yeeun of clc; i don’t know many female rappers but yeeun has been one of my favorites for awhile now and i love her voice, it’s just so great to see how much she’s improved and i’m so proud

21. Favorite Male Choreography:

- superhuman by nct 127; so honestly this was absolutely the hardest question for me, i love dancing and i love most male choreographies so idk why i came to this decision, actually i do, superhuman is honestly a wonderful dance and i love watching it each and every single time i seen it on my recommended on youtube

- highlight by seventeen; the performance unit has so much power and stage presence that it was so hard no to choose this song, they all have such great and precise movements when they dance and it’s beautiful

22. Favorite Female Choreography:

- chase me by dreamcatcher; i love this choreography so much? seriously these girls always kill it and i really want them to grow because they really deserve it

- hobgoblin by clc; this was the first female choreography i really really wanted to learn based on the dance other than russian roulette and dumb dumb by red velvet!!

23. Favorite Male Solo Song:

- fire by sik-k; i absolutely LOVE sik-k so naturally i wanted to choose one of his songs so i went though a bunch if my favorite songs of his and settled on fire, it was a very hard choice though cause addict exists and so does iffy but still

- crooked by g-dragon; crooked has always been one of my favorites by GD it just sounds so different and his voice just makes it one of my favorites, middle fingers-up is a close second for GD

- why by taeyeon; idk why i love this song so much but i just do, i also love taeyeon so much like uwu yes, but seriously i really love all of taeyeons solo music as well as snsd

- honey tea by oohyo; honey tea is one of those songs you could listen to in a cafe or on a relaxing walk with your earbuds in just taking in the crisp air. it makes me feel super calm and just in a space where i feel like everything is chill and cool

25. Favorite Non-Kpop Artist:

- luhan; by baby lulu uwu, i’m absolutely a mushy gushy soft mess for that baby, he’s so cute and kinda and his music is just?? great????? what??? i seriously did not even have a second thought about this but some honorable mentions are definitely big time rush, 5sos, kris wu, joji, etc.

- conan gray; where do i bEGin?! his songs are by far some of my favorites. not only is he a great artist, he has this way with his music that is almost melancholic in sound. it sounds so entrancing and crush culture, generation why, and lookalike are some of my favorites^^

- imitation by luhan; remember when i said i was gush for this man? i wasn’t joking. at all. i seriously love his voice and i just UGH love him, and this song?? bop.

REASONS TO LOVE (G)I-DLE

Yes, they are the most recent guests on Super TV 2 (Ep6). 

And in case you haven’t fallen for them yet, they are an awesome rookie girl group with very similar Suju vibe that you may very well fall in love. 

So here are some reasons why you should definitely check them out:

(Trust me I never imagined I would rant like this about any other group apart from Suju but the fact that one of the members in (G)I-DLE is an ELF qualifies the group to be something Suju-related. Anything Suju-related deserves a rant. Nuff said!) 

As you might have known, one of their members, Yuqi, is an ELF!! Trust me, with the eyes of an ELF who has picked the right legendary group to stand for so many years, from off-stage interactions and videos she seems like the most genuine, kind and bubbly member out of them all. Ever since I first watched her, I have sensed a very familiar happy vibe from her, similar to how I usually feel watching Suju, and then BAM it came as a nice surprise but also not a surprise at all that she’s an ELF!! 

Also, Miyeon, another super pretty member, is getting a lot of attention for having trained with Blackpink in YG for five years (if you don’t know Blackpink then I assume you are not into Kpop lol). She was the reason I decided to check (G)I-DLE out because I was quite deep into Blackpink for the past few months. The last part of the previous sentence would have been written in present tense had I never checked (G)I-DLE out. Nuff said!

I mean... I was mind-blown!! As someone who had only been truly touched once by only ONE group since eight years ago, I thought I would never feel something so special with any other group apart from Super Junior. But this group, (G)I-DLE, a name I was reluctant to check out at first because of all the comparisons with my then biased new girl group - Blackpink (I would never call myself a Blackpink stan, I was just checking out all their pretty stuff and expensive stage clothes and English conversations), has really popped out of know where and changed everything. Of course, I would never love them the way I love Suju, but for years and years I have been searching around Kpop for another group that gives me the same vibe to Suju and I hadn’t been at all successful up until discovering (G)I-DLE. 

Their stage presence, the charisma, the genuine feel and everything else just click so well. A really charismatic and talented girl-group with real swag, coolness and genuine personality just by their stage presence. It came as no surprise that in their off-stage videos they just appeared so down-to-earth and at ease with themselves. I am so certain I’ve fallen for the right group that I won’t bother checking MR-removed or plastic surgery videos of the group (which is something I often to do others, especially the pretty ones) because I don’t care at all!! Their skills are too good to be questioned, and whether they look like this or not I would still be in love, for sure (I wouldn’t be able to say the same with other pretty groups that I like). This is how much this group has got into me. They are the only other group that gives me the ‘real’ feel like Super Junior, and before I knew it I was repeating their songs, yes the whole album, nonstop on Spotify. 

In case you haven’t known, this group happens to produce their own music. Yes produce, you heard me right, as in one member wrote their title song LATATA. Her name is Soyeon, she is probably the best female rapper in K-pop right now, and even her look sells it well. For me, she looks and sounds exactly like CL. This comparison is solely for the purpose of saying how amazing this girl is.  This makes their album, even to someone who has never been that interested in Kpop music in general including Suju’s discography, is honestly really good. I can listen to it all day without feeling bored, and this surprises me so much because I hardly ever likes a full album, let alone listening to it on repeat. Yes you can tell I was sold, completely sold.

But that’s not everything. They have a maknae that resembles Kyuhyun so so so much. Shy looking at first, but is actually charming and charismatic with a lot of potential, and EVIL!!!!! Her name is Shuhua and I used to think she was a bit of a waste at the very beginning (SORRY!) but now I know she’s the gem in the group. 

They also have a crazily charismatic dancer, Soojin, whose stage presence is super! She always puts crazy efforts in her performances, and after watching the MV you can possibly that she can just kill by looking!!  Minnie, their Thai member, is in my opinion the best looking Thai idol in Kpop so far. By best looking I mean she is pretty, of course, but doesn’t seem as lifeless as other Thai idols I’ve seen. She has a really charismatic presence that made me single her out straight away the first time I saw her in their MV. 

Believe it or not, I have only just very recently got to know about them, and I am still exploring and continuing to be awed at what this group offers, without any need to declare myself a stan or anything, because I am not. I just love them and feel deep respect and admiration for these girls, from the perspective of someone who has lurked around this Kpop world for a long time. I swear that all of these fangirling couldn’t have come to me in a less natural way. Their song got stuck in my head while I was doing something else, and I just unconsciously checked their stuff out on youtube, that’s all how it started...  

I think I’m in love. And I am pretty sure this has something to do with Suju.  

Guys, as Suju’s fans, please give a lot of love to (G)I-DLE too.

Super Junior-PLAY. First impressions track by track.

This is my third Super Junior comeback since I started listening to kpop but this one felt like a long time coming. I wouldn’t say I’m a super fan but I do like several of their songs and I’ve gotten to know all the members through variety shows. I do feel they’re hard workers and funny as hell. Most of all they’re iconic in kpopland so if you haven’t check them out, you should. Today is their 12th aniversary and actually I think is kind of sad they’re doing a comeback with only seven members. Kyuhyun and Ryeowook are of course in the army but I would like to have seen a comeback with the remaining 9 members. Having said that this is definitely a great comeback. I’ve only heard the album a couple of times but I decided to share my thoughts on it.

Black Suit. This song with a techno pop sound is the title of the album. The sound definitely fits Super Junior. The MV is a fun story about an auction for a black suit. The cinematography is really nice plus SuJu has always been amazing with their expressions and that just makes it stand out.

Scene Stealer. I wanted to like this one but it just didn’t happen. I would even go so far to say that this is the song I like the least. Eunhyuk and Shindong’s lines specially were not for me.

One More Chance. This is one of my favorite of the album. It has a very current sound and it actually gives me Big Bang vibes in a couple of verses. It was co-written by Donghae. Eunhyuk wrote the lyrics of the rap. It was the pre-release song. Heechul looks so pretty in the MV by the way.

Good Day for a Good Day. It has a fun electronic beat. Definitely a feel good song.

Runaway. Didn’t love the rap parts but another fun pop song with nice vocals. Infused with a bit of brass.

The Lucky Ones. This became another highlight for me from the first couple of lines. It’s a mid tempo ballad. Love Yesung’s falsetto on this one.

Girlfriend. I actually had no notice that Kyuhyun featured in two songs in this album so listening to him in this song was so out of nowhere that left me all emotional. He’s my bias in Super Junior so this was the best surprise ever. This song just feels cool.

Spin Up! I also didn’t like the rap on this one. I’m sorry to say it but it feels dated. I liked the chorus, and the slick background music made me shake my head the whole time.

Too Late. Remember how I said my bias was Kyuhyun? Well maybe it’s because of that but I just loved this song that is actually also a mid tempo ballad. Yesung and Kyuhyun’s voices really stand out.

I do. I liked the rap on this chill ballad. Again Yesung proves he is the star of this comeback with really nice vocals.

Uhhhhhh in terms of a member who’s not my bias I’d have to go with Mingyu or Jongup. They had me seriously questioning who my biases were for Seventeen and B.A.P for a good few months.

Impossible.... It really depends on my mood? And it’s usually cycling through whatever song most recently came out... right now I’d have to say ‘Young wings’ by Stray Kids (predebut track).... but one song that I always come back to is ‘Never Mind’ (Suga’s intro for BTS HYYH pt. 2)

4. FIRST KPOP SONG?

Geeze.... that’s so long ago I don’t even remember. The first song I listened to that I knew as a “kpop song” was one of the early VIXX song’s (I want to say either ‘Hyde’ or ‘Voodoo doll’???) but I’m pretty sure I listened to ‘Haru Haru’ by Big Bang before that? But it could also be ‘Lonely’ by CNBlue???

5. FAVOURITE KPOP ALBUM/SINGLE?

I don’t even know???? HYYH pt. 2 maybe? or Wings? Or Dream pt.1? Or Dream pt.2?? But also Exodus and XOXO were amazing. And I love all of SVT’s albums....

I don’t ship people in a romantic sense (but platonic shipping is cute) but Binu ships themselves.....

Soft..... very soft

8. FAVOURITE KPOP COMPANY?

I would go with Fantagio seeing as Yoojung made a statement on P101 season 1 saying that the company offers Suicide prevention and Sex Ed classes for the trainees (and Book club???) buuuut they often do this thing where they only promote One member of a group and ignore the rest (Seo KangJoon, Cha Eunwoo, etc) so they’re a close second (since they seem to be getting a bit better and are now promoting Moonbin and Gongmyung a lot more now). So I would say my favourite company so far is Plan A. We know for sure that they provide one-on-one counselling sessions for their idols, and so far they have been promoting their groups and solists equally (though they only have 1 girl group, 1 boy group, and 1 soloist). I don’t keep super close tabs on everything so correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I’ve seen Victon, Apink, and Huh Gak have been treated with respect and they seem to be doing well with their company.

9. BACKSTORY OF HOW I GOT INTO KPOP?

Well you see, I have this friend. This best friend. And she and her sister grew up listening to SuJu and Shinee and Big Bang. 10 Reasons Why We're Ready For Super Junior's Comeback

While legendary Kpop groups like TVXQ were hailed as the "gods of Kpop" and BIGBANG simply dubbed "The Kings," there was one group in particular that took Kpop to a new level in Asia and opened doors across the world for the Hallyu Wave to truly take over. That's right— we're talking about none other than the original Kings of Kpop themselves, Super Junior! After debuting in 2005, Super Junior shot to true international fame with their mega hit "Sorry Sorry" in early 2009. They have won an astonishing total of 18 Golden Disc Awards, 13 MAMAs (plus an 19 additional nominations!), two U.S. Teen Choice Awards, and multiple MTV awards. Over the course of their career, the group has racked up a total of 155 international awards, 206 nominations, and almost 60 Korean music show trophies. If u don’t already know I cry A LOT and I love to be sad so just warning u). 1. TOP - Bigbang. This man. This man! I have no words. He is perfection. He is my life, my soul, my world. I love him with my whole being. He is my everything. I cry about him every single day and his enlistment is actually gonna be the death of me. I miss him so much. He’s beautiful inside and out (damn those visuals and that voice. He’s gonna kill me one day). He’s funny. He’s sad. He’s humble. He’s a weirdo and a bingu and a choom and a tabi. He’s my ultimate bias and I couldn’t be happier. 2. Namjoon - BTS. This is so bittersweet. Namjoon was my first kpop love. He was my ult bias for so long because bts was the only group I was into but then TOP came and shook me. He stole my heart away from namjoon. I’m a traitor but I still love this man so much. He is so under appreciated and he gets so much hate he doesn’t deserve. He has led bts to achieve so much and I am so proud of him. He is so smart and humble and u can see how beautiful his soul is in everything he does. I love him and I am sorry everyday that I left him. 3. Jaejoong - DBSK. Yes that’s right just DBSK because in my heart they are forever 5. Jaejoong is such an enigma to me. He’s obviously beautiful and super talented but he’s also had such a hard life and my heart just aches for him. I love him and I cry about him daily. He’s always seems kinda angry deep down and I can never seem to figure him out. I love the mystery of a man who is one of the most public figures in Korea but also so private. 4. IU - solo. IU is a recent love of mine but she has quickly become my queen. I will worship the ground this woman walks on. Never have I seen a more beautiful woman and omg that voice! If IU ever looked at me I would melt. My only wish is for her to be happy and successful for as long as she wants to keep making music. She is the only kpop artist who has never produced a song I don’t like (and yes I’m including the super early stuff). She and her music are perfect. 5. Bom - 2NE1. Another example of a very sad idol. She deserves so much better and my heart breaks for her current situation. I miss 2ne1 so much. They all deserved better. Bom’s voice is probably my favorite in the whole industry just because of how unique it is. Hearing her sing always warms my heart. I hope she gets the solo album she deserves soon but even if she never does I’ll always love her. (Also everyone needs to stop talking about her looks. She’s beautiful no matter what). 6. Baro - B1A4. Stan talent stan B1A4. They are amazing!!!!!! I love literally all of them and tbh idk is Baro is my bias in this group cause I literally love them all but as of now he's my fav. B1A4 are the only rays of sunshine on this list. They are so happy and pure and I love them. Yongguk - BAP. So I struggled with this cause I love Jongup and Yongguk so much but I have a rule where I can only have one bias per group and Jongup is technically my son so Yongguk is the bias. Anyway... Yongguk is amazing. His voice does things to me. I love the music he produces and he has been an amazing leader for BAP. He's gotten them through so much together even when everyone thought all hope was lost. He struggles with mental illness a lot and I just hope he's feeling better and can feel all the love Baby's give him. We truly appreciate all his hard work and I know that doesn't get rid of the stress but I wish I could tell him that he's done enough and that we'll take it from here. BAP is also under appreciated so show them some love. 8. Jaehwan - VIXX. So this will probably come as a shock to some that have talked to me about VIXX before cause I've always said Ravi was my bias but I just can't stay away from Ken. Ken is so low key savage and I love it so much. He is an amazing vocalist and has the best voice in the group (personal opinion and no offense meant to Leo cause he's also amazing obviously). Ken had really stolen my heart and I wanna keep falling in love with him. 9. Jaebum - Got7. Jaebum first shook me when I saw the just right mv for the first time and he was looking fine in that car. That clip still shakes me to this day and jaebum x cars is my otp. Outside of how pretty he is I love how jaebum is the rock that holds the tornado that is got7 together. Without him I think they'd self destruct but he is such a calm and steady leader and he's always looking out for them (especially the foreign members) so they are able to be their wild selves and still succeed. He really warms my heart and he is the only man who's love of cats I accept (except maybe jiyong but that's a whole other story). 10. Onew - SHINee. Yet another leader lol. Onew was such a struggle for me to stan. I literally went through every member of shinee except Taemin before I landed on Onew. It's because SHINee in general is just much softer than what I usually like but my bff love them so I love them too. Back to Onew... he is so low key and I think that's the best way to describe him in every aspect. He stands to the side and doesn't say as much but he's so funny when he talks and is such a gentle leader that you don't even realize how good he is at it. Onew is amazing and I love how understated he is while also being a giant dork. He's just being himself and it's great. (Also that time he dated someone for like a year without Dispatch finding out is legendary. Get on this level!) If you made it this far thank you!!! 1) Who is your favorite girl group?

Tough question. I used to love 4minute and 2ne1 but if we’re talking about active groups then it’d be either GFriend, Blackpink or Mamamoo. Dreamcatcher is slowly going up my list too, I really like their style.

2) Who is your favorite boy group?

B.A.P. I just love them and their work so much, all their songs are perfectly crafted in every way, and they’re so lovely, hardworking and talented. They’ve been through so much but they fought together and are still trying, I really admire them.

3) Are there any choreographies that you love the most (from any group)?

I have to answer B.A.P again. I just love their choreographies, I think they’re so complex and well executed. I particularly love Power and One Shot but all of them are amazing, really. There are other incredibly talented groups I love too: GFriend, SHINee, Infinite and BTS, to name a few.

4) Do you prefer when groups release hype songs or when they release chill songs?

Normally I like hype songs better, there are some ballads I love but they’re usually my least favorite songs in an album.

5) What was your favorite debut song (from any group)?

I don’t want to turn this into a B.A.P biased meme buuut I love Warrior lol, I’m not a big fan of the all-blond style but I really love the song and the choreo. My other favorite debut song is Fanfare by SF9, I fell so hard for it, had it on repeat for days.

6) Are there any groups you wish that were not underrated/would get more recognition?

I’m going to write a lengthy answer for this and it might not even make any sense so I apologize in advance lol.

I try not to think too much about this because it’s dangerously close to what I personally consider “bad fan-etiquette”. Doesn’t matter how much someone screams underrated, it’s always a biased opinion. A specific group might be the best thing on earth for me but it doesn’t have to be for the rest of the people, everybody has their own taste and their criteria of what’s important in a group. Not only there’s no real way to objectively rank idols based on how good they are or how popular they deserve to be, but I feel like it shouldn’t matter much anyway. I know there’s a limit of how “nugu” a group can be before they disappear so we all worry and fight hard to make sure our groups are known, but as long as they get by well enough to survive I don’t care too much about awards and number of views or stans. Sadly, that’s not really how you measure talent or professionality (even if some people like think so), let alone how lovely or hardworking they are. And sometimes talent isn’t even relevant, in my opinion, sometimes you just like a group simply because you do and you’re perfectly entitled to. I don’t like forcing anything on anybody and I don’t like putting value where it doesn’t belong.

Stuffy rant said (sorry for that, it’s a topic I’m somewhat passionate about and I couldn’t help it lol), I’m going to answer this question anyway. I personally wish B.A.P and Monsta X had more recognition, in my very biased opinion. B.A.P was on a really good path before everything went to hell because of the lawsuit issue, and I think it’s really unfair because they were brave enough to fight back and they ended up being punished for it. And Monsta X is doing so well and they’re so good but they still haven’t won anything and they think it’s their fault, so it’s frustrating. But there’s nothing I can really do about it besides “doing my part” and buying/streaming/recommending them when asked, so why complain about it.

7) Do you choose your biases or do your biases choose you?

They choose me. I always try to choose and stick to it but it’s inevitable, they come for me hahaha. When I get into a new group I choose the cutest member and go with it, but then I get to know them and usually someone else does something that makes me go ‘who are you and where have you been all my life’.

8) What’s the first Kpop song you heard?

Fantastic Baby by BIGBANG.

9) What made you fall in love with Kpop?

I just love the aesthetics and how professional they are. I was in awe, the way they train for this and how hard they work for every single comeback after they debut. They have to sacrifice so much to become idols, they spend so many uncertain years trying to debut without even knowing if they ever will – and when they do, it’s not like everything is done and they’re going to live in luxury the way popular Western artists do. Being an idol is really hard and the competition is brutal, you never know how long you’re going to be up. It’s amazing, you don’t see this kind of commitment and professionality around here, in my opinion.

10) Do you have an merchandise of your favorite groups?

I do! I’m very picky when it comes to merch but I own several t-shirts/hoodies, lightsticks, photocards and some other goodies.

11) Do you have any song or group recommendations?

You seem to have a very nice taste! I feel like you’re going to know everybody I mention. I saw you just got into SF9, Pentagon and 24K. Do you know MVP? They debuted recently and I love their stuff so far! I also got into Victon recently thanks to Eyez Eyez.

Aw man, how am I supposed to choose. I’m going to say B.A.P again, sorry. I love Skydive, 1004 (Angel) and Wake me up, such good videos. I love VIXX’s mvs as well, they’re always so dark and dramatic. I love EXO’s Monster, Monsta X’s All in and BTS’ Run too. I can’t really choose one hahaha.

I love 2ne1 and GFriend’s dance practices.

My ult bias is Bang Yong Guk from B.A.P. Where do I even start. I feel like I’d feel really comfortable around him. I don’t know how to explain it, he seems to have a nice and calm aura and I feel so at ease with such people (introverted things lol). He’s really smart and socially aware, he doesn’t speak much but every time he does he says the right thing. He’s such a good caretaker, all the boys love him and respect him SO much, I feel like it says a lot about him and how he makes people close to him feel. He’s an amazing person as well, he does so much for other people and gives so much to charity, I feel like we don’t even know half of it but it’s already impressive. He’s so incredibly talented too, he plays such an active part in the creation of their songs and they are always so good (and so is the rest of the work he does under his known pseudonym.) I could go on forever but I won’t do that to you lol basically, he’s an incredibly amazing and gorgeous human being, an amazing leader and a talented artist.

5) Who’s your ultimate bias wrecker?

Most of the people I stan, really. I just love everybody so much, they move up and down on the messy list all the time. They’re all amazing. I guess I’d say the rest of B.A.P if I had to choose, specially Youngjae.

6) Have you ever seen a kpop group live/been to kcon?

I have! I went to KCON LA 2016 and I’ve also seen EXO, GOT7, SHINee, Red Velvet, AOA, FT Island, Tiger JK and Dean live. Amazing experiences, all of them. I’m really hoping they’ll do a KCON in Europe this year.

7) Is there a group you want to see live?

B.A.P! They’re coming to Europe next month but nowhere near me and I can’t take the time to travel far because of work (all the dates are weekdays, WHYYY). I’ve already seen Monsta X and GFriend at KCON but I’d love to go a solo concert, that’d be lovely. I’d love to see BIGBANG, VIXX, BTS (if it’s in a seat far away from the rest of fans), Mamamoo, Highlight and Block B too. Who am I kidding, I’d love to see everybody I stan lol.

8) What was your favorite comeback of 2017 so far?

B.A.P, of course hahaha. I’ve loved many comebacks and debuts actually, obviously Highlight’s “debut” is a close second but I also really liked GOT7, Winner, Day6, Victon, SF9, Teen Top, IMFACT, BTS, CLC, AOA and CNBlue. If we’re talking about debuts, I really liked Dreamcatcher, MVP, Seven O’Clock, Black6ix and UNIT BLACK. I’m probably forgetting a couple debuts/comebacks I loved lol.

9) What upcoming comeback are you looking forward to?

Highlight’s Junhyung is making a solo comeback soon and I’m super excited about it! He’s my BEAST/Highlight bias, and I love his work and rapping style. I’m high key excited about Triple H’s debut too, I love Hyuna and Pentagon so I’m looking forward to see what they come up with!

10) Is there a group that you know of that you want to get into?

I have what I call my “side-children”, it’s basically groups I check out when they come back and occasionally see on my dash but I don’t actively follow. I’d like to get more into them, I don’t know much beyond the music and I wish I did. Groups like KNK, IMFACT, B1A4, 24K or Brave Girls, among others.

11) What’s your favorite kind of album concept? (royalty, cute, gang, elegant, sexy, etc.)

I usually like any concept as long as it’s well done and it fits the group, but I’m not very into cute concepts. I tend to favor dark and aggressive concepts best but I don’t have a favorite, I’m in for anything if they can pull it off successfully.

I didn’t give you straight answers, I’m sorry hahahaha. I just love so many groups, it’s really hard to only choose one. I really tried to keep it small, I swear.

1. Something impressive one of your fave groups has done? I mean, it’s hard to pick one thing that suju has done that’s impressive because everything about them is... but I think their biggest achievement as a group is getting their own label under sm! <3

2. Best variety moment by your bias? How can I choose just one moment of the VARIETY KING KIM HEECHUL???? His entire career as an mc in weekly idol tbh. also flirting with Seola on knowing bros, just because I love Seola and I’m still not over that interaction :D

3. A moment that made you tear up because of you bias/a group? /sigh/ there’s so much, honestly... kyuhyun’s accident, various members leaving the group, enlistments, donghae’s father passing and leeteuk promising him he will take care of donghae... also this performance of marry u... but if we’re talking about something specific that always makes me cry in the middle of the night when I think about it, then Han Geng leaving, Heechul’s fancafe post and that performance Heechul cried in beijing... (not gonna link it, you know which one i’m talking about) basically anything HanChul related makes me cry

4. Fave song at the moment? Probably Tension Up by Imfact!!! Also Hibernation by Yesung (paper umbrella is good too but I love hibernation more), and Wee Woo by Pristin :D

5. Fave boy band at the moment? Super Junior, always! :) Also Pentagon, Seventeen and Monsta X ^^

6. Fave girl group at the moment? Cosmic Girls, Mamamoo and Girl’s Generation

7. A song you recommend? All the ones I linked above, but also You Bad! Don’t Make Me Cry by Matilda because it’s one of the best songs of 2016 and it’s so underappreciated!

8. Do you listen to older K-POP songs, too? (early and late 90s?) Yes! Mostly H.O.T and Shinhwa, but I’m open to recommendations if you have some :) I still need to go back and listen to S.E.S because I loved their new album so I need to check out their older stuff!

9. Fave live performance? Honestly I’m not even gonna bother to try and think because every single performance suju has ever done is amazing and I love them all so I can’t choose ;; 

10. Why did your bias become your bias? I don’t remember the specific reason, but I fell in love with Heechul when I watched Full House and he was so dorky and cute and crazy lol. Also probably because it was in my super yaoi fangirl years (......eh) so I liked that he kissed guys and did drag and all that lol. Now of course I love him for other things, mostly his honesty and his in-your-face-i-don’t-care-if-you-think-i’m-a-bitch-i-know-i’m-awesome attitude ^^

11. Is there a group you were interested before but not anymore? There’s a lot... In 2013-2014 I kinda stopped listening to kpop, I only kept listening to a few groups that I loved (like suju and exo and snsd and stuff like that), and I kinda stopped caring about a lot of groups that I liked before... like beast (I do like their new song as highlight though, haven’t listened to the album yet though), infinite, ze:a.... basically a lot of the groups that debuted around 2010-2011 that i loved in their debut era and then forgot about them until like last year lol MY QUESTIONS:

→ Known to be a secret project so there were no rumors or public appearances before debut yet they became extremely popular with their debut song and brought ‘skinny jeans’ to men in the fashion world.

2009:

→ tough, sexy concepts were trendy but they made a comeback with a completely opposite concept (Juliette), at the same time as their comeback stage they were nominated as first place along with suju & davinchi, shinee won.

→ ring ding dong is still picked as a 'song you shouldn’t listen to for year 12 final exams’ bc it’s so addicting, the song also achieved triple crowns, a fake SHINee group was created in cambodia after the song was released. 

2010:

→ lucifer was realeased, it still remains to be well known today, the 'buffering dance’ was also famous. 

→ They held their first ever concert 2 years after debut, at the time it was going to be held at the 88 gymnasium but people complained that the venue was too small so it was changed to the olympic gymnasium, they also had a solo concert in Japan (before their Japanese debut) and all tickets were sold out.

2011:

→ debuted in japan and basically killed the charts, they set the best record out of all loop groups. the number of albums they sold was incredible to the point where the japanese records association gave recognition to shinee’s album as a golden album.

→ They performed at London’s last square, forthe first time their website went down from the crowded ticket reservation system.

2012:

→ Sherlock was released in Korea after 1year&6months. even after the long period of no comeback, they still managed to win triple crowns along with giving the public/Kpop world a huge impact with their choreography and vocals

→ jap areana tours happened along with various tours across asia

2013:

→ MoY, MoM, MoU became another success 

→ their mr removed performance of everybody became a hot topic as their live skills were perfect even from the tough choreography,

This is a lenthy Suju essay

I've gotten into so many 3rd, 4th gen Kpop groups but nothing feels like Suju, regardless of whatever happened - member left, member went missing, members enlisting, member on detention, or even member got boycotted out. Kpop in general is a rather - frankly and critically speaking - childish genre made to be appealing on a very superficial level, i.e. idols are like walking dolls or godlike figures that attract you with their well manufactured appearance and easily consumed, catchy music & dance routines. Every single group, even big names with style, with swag, with record-breaking achievement this and that follows the same formula. And then there's Suju who is supposedly an idol group and thus is somewhat manufactured and idolised in certain ways, esp. during early period up until their peak with Sorry Sorry, and with certain members on the visual line who are aimed for this sort of appeal. But apart from that they've managed to break out from the idol stereotype and be a bit more real than the rest. That's why they attract fans and connect with them in a similar yet different way. Similar because they still need to do the idol stuff like everyone else: releasing album, doing fan service, looking pretty etc. Different because they have much more leeway to behave a bit more like daily life ordinary people than other idols. They say more controversial things, openly declare conflicts within the group (because realistically, a big group of people bound together by work is not a happy family of best friends), and can actually shut TV hosts down with their wit and big personalities. These are literally why they've got a fair amount of hatred over the years because those that like original idols for who they are will obviously find Suju outrageous- they don't bother much with their idol image, they don't necessarily have certain 'cute' or 'swag' or 'musically talented' label attached to them all the time (not because they are not, more like they don't need to force themselves into any kind of concept), and to be honest, about half of the group openly show little interest toward either singing or dancing or both. There's no way Suju is gonna be like some sort of nation's boygroup or something, simply because they don't sell the whole idol package. Kpop, again, is a walking/dancing doll business thriving on (usually very young) people's fantasy. If a group with so much gag-like personalities like SJ ends up being extremely and universally popular, Kpop needs to change to K-gag or something similar. So, this is to say, there's no reason to feel insecure if Suju don't stay on top, don't sell music well or don't win awards. They have their unique way of staying relevance and still being comfortable with themselves while enjoying much more freedom than other idols (perhaps this was why Kangin dared to drunk-drive or Sungmin dared to get married all of a sudden). One selling thing about top Kpop groups I've observed over time is the 'prestige'. Fans would do anything to keep their idols on top and go on and on about their group's relevance. Kpop enthusiasts relate with idols on a very high level and as much as we want ourselves to be well liked, we also want our bias group to be acknowledged, somewhat to a much more extreme degree. Suju sure has been up there, because hey, even as a not very typical kpop group they still fare pretty well in certain 'idol metrics', this shows how good they actually are. But their peak period has done more than enough to place them at a good position in Kpop map and give them the exposure needed to actually show who they are and attract fans for their style. Staying relevance is great, but for Suju the pressure of being on top in the music industry is not a priority. They rule variety shows anyway, and no, being top variety idols is not considered that much of a prestige; rather it gives them even more controversies, and sure fans of other groups will not like it very much when SJ members (1) seem to be everywhere on TV and (2) speak too frankly/ harshly toward their favourite idols as part of their role on shows. Well, tough job. I am actually proud of Suju being good variety materials because that shows they are actually good entertainers who think for themselves other than following company's orders like robots. One think I dislike is because sometimes they get the worst from both worlds: criticised for not that much musically focused or image-conscious as an idol group, at the same time not taken seriously in the variety filed because after all they are still idols. But I guess that's the trade of for being a well-rounded group. Bottom line: As long as fans support them enough for them to keep doing what they are doing at this point,i.e. releasing music and doing their highly profitable tour besides various individual projects, it's a success. There's no need to worry about their relevance. It's critical to support them, buy their music, turn up at shows and concerts etc, but understanding that they do not need to be the best in sales or topping music charts will save fans a great deal of headaches. Perhaps, however, the majority of their fans are mature enough to know this anyway. So for the confused new fans who struggle to position SJ among today's popular groups,l: Super Junior has already been up there and they will always be there, in their own way.
